"I was angry with my friend:
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe:
I told it not, my wrath did grow.
And I watered it in fears
Night & morning with my tears;
And I sunned it with smiles,
And with soft deceitful wiles.
And it grew both day and night,
Till it bore an apple bright.
And my foe beheld it shine,
And he knew that it was mine,
And into my garden stole,
When the night had veiled the pole;
In the morning glad I see
My foe outstretched beneath the tree."
"A POISON TREE" BY WILLIAM BLAKE
The Sunset was beautiful in his eyes. The sound of the water beneath the dock was calming. Sasuke had thought his favorite place might give him comfort, he was wrong. Sasuke curled his knees into his chest. It was his first day back at the academy since his brother's attack. He couldn't focus on his class. What his brother said to him had haunted his dreams the night before. Sasuke never felt more alone, even with Itachi's words keeping him company. He loved Itachi even after what he did to their family. Sasuke could never see himself living up to Itachi's expectations to kill him. Sasuke was so caught up with his thoughts he didn't hear the footsteps behind him.
"I noticed you sitting here all by yourself, I thought I could keep you company?"
Sasuke jumped at the question he turned to see the blonde kid with whiskers from his class.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." The blonde said, "My name's Naruto."
Sasuke felt his racing heart calm a little "Sasuke." He whispered as he slid over to make room for Naruto
As Naruto sat down all he spoke was "I know what it's like to be alone. It's not fun, all you can hear are your thoughts, and soon enough it will eat away at your spirit leaving nothing but a shell." Naruto took a deep breath "don't let that happen to you."
Sasuke sat there quietly as Naruto talked, but said nothing in return. Sasuke and Naruto spent the rest of their time in comfortable silence till nightfall.
Sasuke walked in the morning light to the academy feeling more rested than the day before. When he arrived at the academy it was still early, but Naruto had beat him there. Sasuke took a seat next to Naruto saying nothing. They sat like that until "EEK! It's Sasuke-Kun!" both boys turned at the sound of both Ino and Sakura gushing
"Sasuke-Kun, why are you sitting next to him? someone of your status should be sitting next to someone like me." Said Ino
"yah, Sasuke-Kun, he's dead last you should at least sit next to someone worth your time." Sakura said with an air of superiority to her.
"He is worth my time." Sasuke said with finality "Now if you excuse me you two interrupted my friend and I's conversation."
"But Sasuke-Kun!" Ino protested
Both Naruto and Sasuke had already turned around.
"It's a good morning isn't it," said Sasuke
"Yeah it is."
Sasuke smiled as Iruka-sensei walked in telling the class to shut up
Sasuke focused better than yesterday. After he and Naruto hung out on the dock Sasuke felt more at peace. The pain and betrayal were still there but he was no longer alone.
Lunch hour came and Sasuke walked out of class with Naruto. The boys had settled under an old oak tree. Opening his homemade bento box, he popped an Onigiri into his mouth. Sasuke looked over to Naruto and noticed that he didn't have a lunch.
"Hey, Naruto where is your lunch?" He asked.
"I don't have one," Naruto stated.
"why?"
"I can't cook, and the shopkeepers always refuse to sell me any food. They are always polite about it, but I can't buy a bento box on my way to school." Naruto explained
Sasuke looked down at his lunch that reminded him of his mom. She had taught him to make his lunches some time ago before she passed away at the hands of his brother. Then he looked up at his newfound friend. Sasuke took the lid of his bento box and with his chopsticks, he picked up his Tamagoyaki and held them out to Naruto. "Here you need to eat,"
Naruto's eyes widened "are you serious?!"
"Yes, now hurry up before I change my mind," Sasuke said
Naruto smiled and grabbed the lid and with his hands ate the Tamagoyaki. "you're a really good cook, Sasuke!" Naruto said loudly with his mouth full of food.
Sasuke was enjoying lunch when he noticed the girls glaring at Naruto whispering to each other. This left a bad taste in Sasuke's mouth. When lunch ended, they hung out during the physical portion of class running laps around the track and throwing Kunai side by side. When class ended Sasuke approached Naruto "Hey want to do homework together at the bay?" he asked
Naruto smiled at Sasuke "You think I actually do homework! I'm going for straight Failure in class."
Sasuke gave Naruto a blank look "how you say that with a smile amazes me."
"but~" Naruto spoke dragging out the word "I'll gladly keep you company"
Sasuke lay on the maple planks doing math homework having already finished history, with Naruto sleeping next to him. Sasuke felt at peace watching the sun dip beneath the horizon listening to the water crash into the dock. They spent their time in silence. Just enjoying the presence, the other provides.
"Crap!" Sasuke swore looking at the time on his alarm clock class started in 10 minutes. Sasuke ran through his apartment trying to get ready. I don't have time to make Naruto's and mine Bentos. He thought crossly I'll stop by the bento shop and buy them today. Sasuke was running to the academy after stopping by the bento store he was by the lake when he heard Ino's voice
"Serves him right for trying to steal Sasuke-Kun away from us." The rest of the girls voiced their agreement.
Sasuke turned to his favorite place and the sight made his blood run cold. There were 5 girls on the dock and in the water all he could see was flailing arms and a mop of blonde hair. They are letting him drown. I-I can't let that happen. I've lost too many people in my life already. Sasuke dropped his things and ran to the dock and jumped into the icy water. By the time Sasuke made it to the water Naruto had stopped moving. The glacial water fought against Sasuke's desperate strokes to reach his friend. The unwelcoming cold seeped into his bones, but he pushed through pulling Naruto to the surface of the lake. The young boy shivered as he called out to his friend. "Naruto please wake up!" he cried.
In the background someone was faintly shouting
It took Sasuke a minute, but he realized that Iruka had gone searching for the missing kids.
"Hand me Naruto, Sasuke," Iruka ordered
Sasuke numbly nodded lifting Naruto to the best of his abilities
Iruka grabbed Naruto and pulled him onto the dock before lending a hand to Sasuke. Iruka turned his attention to Naruto and put his ear to Naruto's mouth. "He's not breathing"
Sasuke's world froze at the words "NARUTO!"
