Chapter 1
I sat in my bedroom staring at the wall pondering deeply, what is wrong with me? Why does everything I do just end badly? That stupid girl pushed me and out of no where she got blown against the opposite wall and I get blamed! It makes no sense! Juliet knows I didn't push her!
" Anne! Come downstairs now! Your father and I want to speak with you," my mother yelled up to me. I hesitated knowing that I was about to get yelled at for something I didn't do.
" Now!"
I raced down the stairs before I would get punished worse. I slowed my pace as I came into my parents' sight. My mother pointed towards the couch. I sat myself down as quickly as possible.
" Mom, I didn't do it! I know she said I did, but I didn't!" I pleaded with them, but they both just shook their heads.
" Anne, you say that every time …" She stopped short when we heard a loud knock on the door. She quickly raced to the door and flattened her dress out before opening it. As soon as she opened the door I caught a glimpse of an old man, who appeared to be at least 90, stood. He eyes skipped right past my mother who was speaking to him and landed on me. He was an odd looking man, wearing a dress, a long beard held by a chain, and wearing half-moon spectacles.
" Hello Madam, I'm here to see an Anne Snape." The man smiled.
" There is no Anne Snape here, but my daughter Anne Jackson is. And who are you to know my daughter, if you mind my asking?"
" My name is Albus Dumbledore. I'm the Headmaster of a prestigious school just outside of Bulgaria, called Hogwarts. Your daughter has special qualities and we have deemed her eligible to attend."
" Wow! Sorry I have yet to introduce myself. I'm Sandra Jackson and this is my husband Arthur. Come on in Mr. Dumbledore."
" Well, hello Anne! It's a pleasure to finally meet you!"
" And you as well sir. But may I ask sir, what made me eligible to be able to attend?"
" Well … you are already sitting down. Mr. and Mrs. Jackson I suggest before I deliver a piece of unknown news to you that you take a seat. Anne, have you ever done something? Something that you can't explain? Make something move without touching it?" I nodded my head as I thought about today's event and all the other events of my life that I've never been able to understand. " Well, Anne this may come as a shock to you and you may not believe me, but you are a witch. And not the bad kind that are evil. There are hundreds of witches and wizards and thousands of other magical creatures all over London. I am one, a wizard I mean. You are eligible for this school because it is a school of witchcraft and wizardry." I wasn't shocked. This was the answer to all the questions I've asked all my life.
" If I'm a … if I'm a … witch, why aren't my parents? Or are you? Could you not tell me for some reason?"
" Your parents family has no history of any magical qualities. If you wish to know why your powers are such an anomaly I suggest asking your dear parents."
" Mum?"
" Darling there's something we need to tell you. We were going to tell you when you turned 18, but apparently we need to tell you now." She looked to my father for help and he took her place.
" Princess … you're adopted. Your mother … your biological mother told us in a letter you'd be different, but she said it wouldn't be an issue. And as for a father she only said that he didn't know about you. You also have … a twin brother. We heard from someone that she has passed on."
" I'm adopted? You never told me? Huh …. Did you know my mother sir? Do you know who my father is? What about my brother? Where is he? Does he know about me?" I was rambling and I knew it. I couldn't stop though, I needed to know.
" Slow your roll, Anne. Yes, you are adopted. Your parents have perfectly reasonable reasons for not telling you about that. I did know your mother. She was intelligent, bright, and the smartest witch of her age. Her name's … or her name was Lily Potter. I do know who your father is and he's alive. He's a professor at Hogwarts. He still has yet to find out about you and your brother, but if both you and your brother agree I will introduce you to him. Your brother was placed in a different home than you for your safety. He is living with his aunt and uncle. He doesn't know about you yet? But I would hope to introduce you if your parents would allow you to come to this school." At this he looked up to my parents.
" You say at this school she'll learn to control this power." He nodded. " She's our daughter though. I don't want this man you say is her father to take her away from us."
" Well, ma'am it's her choice. While she is at the school she will get the privilege to meet her father and if she so chooses to live with him and her brother. It is her choice and it is also her choice if she wants to go to the school or not. If you choose not to pay it does not matter, her mother Lily left Anne and her brother mountains of money. You must choose by tomorrow. I will be back to hear your decision Anne. Good day to you!" With that Dumbledore left. I bid my parents good night with another word and ran to my room. I want to go! I will go! I want to meet my father! My brother! I have a brother! I'm not an only child. I kept thinking of all the possibilities and soon drifted off to sleep.
It was 11 in the morning and Dumbledore will be here in an hour to get me. My parents have yet to hear my decision, but I have already packed my bags and things I need. My parents called me down earlier for breakfast, but I pretended to be asleep. In my defense I just found out a whole lot about myself. I picked up a book off the shelf and decided to read the time away.
In no time at all I heard a knock on the front door. I grabbed my bags and raced down the stairs. Instead of Dumbledore an old woman in close to the same attire stood on the porch.
" Hello, I'm Minerva McGonagall. Headmaster couldn't come to get you today so he sent me to retrieve you if you so wish." This lady looked a good 20 years younger than Dumbledore, still old but … . She also has the thickest Scottish accent I've ever heard. " So… What is your decision dearie?" I could feel my parents behind me already knowing the answer. I know they can see my packed bags resting at my feet. I turned around to hug my mum and dad.
" I love you mum, dad! This is a great opportunity for me! Please understand! I want to have a brother! I want to be with people that are different like me!"
" Oh, my Anne. We love you so much! And Anne Snow Jackson you better not forget it! Even if you choose to live with your biological family, you will always be our little girl." I gave my parents one last hug each and walked out the front door with McGonagall waving goodbye to my parents.
" Alright dearie, this will be uncomfortable. It is quite alright if you do get sick. We are about to apparate to Diagon Alley to buy your school supplies. After that we will go to Hogwarts where you will meet your brother and then your father."
" Yes ma'am, I think I'll be alright. Do you know my father as well, like Dumbledore?"
" I know who your brother is. I haven't seen him since he was a baby though. Dumbledore never told me who your father was, do you know his name? Maybe I do know him."
" Well, he didn't tell me his name, but called me by a different last name than I have, so I'm assuming it's his last name."
" And what is that?"
" Well, he called me by the name of Anne Snape."
" Snape! You couldn't be, no, you couldn't be Severus's daughter."
" Who is Severus?"
" He is one of my coworkers. He is a professor at Hogwarts."
" Then that's him. Dumbledore told me that my father is a professor."
" Wow! I cannot believe Severus has children. A very kept to himself person he is. He is like a son to me and Albus though."
" Are you and Dumbledore married ma'am?" McGonagall turned beet red and shook her head no.
" Ok. We must get a move on and collect all your supplies." And with that we apparated, we got money from a scary bank called Gringotts, then we got school approved robes, quills, ink, parchment, and a wand. McGonagall sent me into the wand shop alone saying she needed to grab something. So I walked in and met a man named Mr. Ollivander. A strange man. He warned me I would do great things some day, but it is unknown if it would be good or bad. He told me my brother had already passed through the day before to get his own wand. I bid him farewell and thanked him for his service. I walked back out into the busy street looking for McGonagall. I saw her walking towards me with a huge cage in hand. A snowy white owl sat on a perch in the cage hooting quietly almost as soft as a cat's purr.
"Oh, she's beautiful! Is she yours?" I asked. She was indeed very beautiful.
" No, she's for you! Your brother got her twin yesterday as a birthday present from his guide. He named his Hedwig, but you can name yours anything you like."
" Oh thank you! I'll name her Snow. That's my middle name. Thank you."
" Well, let's be on now. It's time for you to meet your brother." I was giddy with excitement. I have a brother and after I meet him I'll meet my father. I know I already have parents, but I've never really thought I belonged in the muggle world. Muggles are apparently non magic folk. I grabbed her hand and we apparated again. This time I felt less sick after landing. We were in a small village, McGonagall told me it's called Hogsmeade Village. It was cute and quaint. I looked into the distance and saw a huge, beautiful, amazing castle. I followed her up a long steep hill up towards the castle. It was at least a 30 minute walk. But every step I was more nervous than the next. Any minute I'll meet my biological family. I might as well have been hyperventilating when we walked up to the big wooden doors because McGonagall told me repeatedly to breath.
She opened the huge doors with a wave of her wand and we walked through the beautiful castle. I'd never seen anything like it. Soon we came to a dead end and I was about to ask why we were here and then she spoke to a gargoyle. Strangely enough it wasn't the weirdest thing I've seen all day. Out of nowhere a spiral staircase appeared and we started walking up. I heard talking coming from the door that rested at the top of the staircase. She knocked on the door thrice and it opened, all talking silenced. We walked through the door. In the room I saw Dumbledore sitting behind a large desk, a boy with jet black hair just like mine and green eyes that resembled mine perfectly. He looked at me with curiosity, obviously noticing our similarities.
" Ahh, Professor McGonagall and Anne have arrived! Oh, yes, introductries are in order. Anne this is Harry Potter."
" Lily Potter's son? Right?"
" You just know my parents because I'm "famous" right?" I furrowed my brow.
" You're famous? What for? You're just 10." I knew I had messed up. I shouldn't have known how old he was.
" How do you know how old I am? What's going on?" Dumbledore decided then was the right time for him to speak up.
" Harry, my boy … I have some troubling news for you. You know who your parents are, right? Lily and James Potter? Well, Lily is your mother, but James is not your father." I turned to look at Harry and he seemed confused and dissapointed, his world had fallen apart. I understand the feeling. " Your real father is a professor here. He most likely would have taken you in, but he still doesn't know that you exist." Harry sat with his mouth agape, deep in thought. " Also, one more thing. You have a twin sister. You were separated for your protection, but we have decided that now that you are old enough for school we should introduce you." Harry pointed back towards me and Dumbledore nodded. " This is your twin sister Anne." Harry now looked very shy. I wondered if he was an only child like me where he was raised. I brought forth all the confidence I could.
" Hello," I squeaked nervously. He seemed grateful I had made the first move.
" Hi… Did you already know all this?"
" Well, I only found out yesterday." He seemed a little bit more at ease at the fact I had just found out too. " Do you have any other … Do we have any other siblings?" He shook his head. There was a long awkward silence so Dumbledore once again spoke up.
" Why don't you two go explore the castle and spend some time together while Professor McGonagall and I speak. If you need anything or can't find your way back to my office just call for Judy. Alright, off you go."
Harry cautiously stood and followed me to the door. I walked down the staircase and Harry and I talked about what part of London we were from and what our families were like. His family seemed awful. We eventually started a game of tag. He was it and was chasing me through the Great Hall where McGonagall told us to stay around. I turned my head over my shoulder to see if he was close to me and I ran smack dab into somebody.
" Watch where you are going, child! Who are you?" Before me stood a tall man, with a long nose, billowing black robes, jet black hair, and striking purple eyes.
" I'm not supposed to talk to strangers…" I told him nervously. " Who are you?"
" Professor Severus Snape." He looked down at us and poor Harry was shaking. I gasped and grabbed Harry's hand and ran for Dumbledoe's office. I knew that our father would follow us curious as to why we were there, but I wanted to be back with the people I was familiar with. I pounded on the office door and it swung open. The two adults sat at the desk looking startled.
" We met, him!" The adults understood while my brother did not. He was asking me who that man was. I refused to answer him because I could see from Dumbledore's eyes that he did not want that revealed to Harry yet. Even under the circumstances McGonagall smiled at Harry and I standing hand in hand. I pleaded with my eyes for him to let me tell Harry the truth. Dumbledore nodded his consent. " Harry … that was our father, Severus Snape."
" Severus? I've heard that name before! Aunt Petunia has talked about him. I think him and mum were friends when they were kids." Dumbledore nodded his head in agreement.
" Children, I think it would be wise to go find him and explain the circumstances." I shook my head. " What's wrong Anne?"
"Well, he scared Harry and he was kind of rude." McGonagall gave Dumbledore a sad smile and then turned to speak with us.
" Anne, you have to understand your father has not had the easiest life. He may not come off as the nicest person, but once you get to know him you'd love him."
" Ok." I agreed. I wonder what she means by not having the easiest life. Well, he did lose our mum. Just then the office door opened fast and in walked our father.
" Albus, you better have a good explanation as to why there are kids running around-" He stopped short when he saw us sitting at the desk. " What are these kids doing here?"
" Severus, you might want to sit down my boy." Severus frowned, but did as was suggested. " Now Severus um-Anne, would you two care to wait outside on the stairs?"
" Yes sir." I hopped off me and Harry's chair and reached my hand out to him. " Come on." We walked to sit on the top step and I shushed Harry. " Let's put our ears to the door and listen," I whispered.
" What's going on Albus … Minerva … someone say something? Why are those kids here, who are they?"
" Ok, you just can't blow this out of proportion, Severus. Ok? Those kids were sent by their mother to two different families, they're twins and they got separated. Their mother has passed on, but we are aware that their father is still alive . . . so Minerva and I are trying to figure out how to tell him he has children. I mean not only 1, but 2. It's a lot!"
" Well, I'm sure he'll do what he thinks is right. Those kids are like what … 10, 11 years old? What's their mother and father's names? I might know them from school." There was a long silence.
" Severus, this may come as a shock, but . . . you and Lily are their parents. She never told you because she wanted everyone to believe they were James's kids to protect you from You Know Who."
" You must be joking Albus. I can't be a father. I mean Lily and I . . . . . it was only once
. . . it couldn't have been twins. Please, tell me your joking Albus. I don't know how to be a father. I didn't exactly have the best role model." I turned to Harry to ask, " What does he mean by only once?" He shrugged his shoulders. The voices got quieter so we pressed our ears harder against the door and it slid open with our faces hitting the floor. When we stood, we both faced the floor and our faces turned beet red. Our father's face was also red, maybe something he said he's embarrassed about us hearing.
" Sorry," Harry squeaked out barely audible.
" It's quite alright. It's only natural you'd be curious," Dumbledore consoled us. " Now it's time I guess to introduce you properly to your father."
Our father, Dumbledore, and McGonagall stood from their seats. Dumbledore and McGonagall both left the room and went down the stairs leaving us with our father. He knelt down in front of us. Harry and I still faced the ground in shame of being caught. He took his hands and lifted both our chins so we could meet his eyes. He gasped when we did.
" Sorry, it's just, you have your mother, Lily's eyes." I smiled at that and Harry did, too. " So . . . tell me your names." I turned to Harry and he was facing the ground once again, so I spoke for us, " I'm Anne … and this is Harry." He smiled at us.
" Well, I think I know who named both of you." At this Harry looked up. " I did. I remember one time your mother asking what I would name my kids if I ever had any. I never thought she would actually use the names I picked. So how old are you both?" This time Harry spoke for us, " We are both 10 years old. Our Birthday is in 2 weeks though so we'll be 11 by the end of the first week of class."
" So, you both will be starting at Hogwarts this year, correct?" We both nodded. He smiled at this. " Tell me everything. I want to know as much about you both as I can. What are your adoptive families like?" I looked at Harry pretty much asking if he wanted to go first. He nodded.
" Well, I live with my biological aunt, uncle, and cousin. My aunt Petunia. They aren't very kind to me. They call me a freak when I do magic by accident and they make me do chores all day to help get rid of my magic." Our father looked horrified at what Harry had told him.
"Oh. I remember Petunia. She's only jealous, that you're special and she's not. I would love to hurt her for doing that to you." He glared daggers into space, probably hoping they'd hit Petunia." What about you Snow?"
" Well, mum and dad were okay. I mean I didn't know I was adopted though until Dumbledore came to get me. They called me a freak behind my back after I did weird things. I got beat up often at school cause kids thought I was a freak and some thought I was a witch or a monster. I got punched, pushed, and tripped a lot. One time my dad hit me when I broke all the glass in the kitchen by accident. That's it really." Our father was mortified by the end of my story. My life was definitely not as bas as Harry's, though.
" Well, let me tell you both, you are NOT freaks. Again, they are just jealous because you're special and they aren't. They had no right to hurt you because you're different. You'll find other kids here that were treated the same way and will understand how you feel. I barely know both of you, but I already know that I care a lot about you. Just know I will NEVER resort to physical punishment." Harry and I both smiled up at him when he said that. " Ok, now that is clear there are the sleeping arrangements. So you can either stay in Minerva's quarters if you are more comfortable with that or you can stay with me in my quarters. You can choose. You don't have to choose right now if you want to talk about it later alone. And the other thing, what do you want to call me? You can call me whatever you like, but if you want Severus or dad or father are all fine. So?"
Harry and I looked at each other contemplating silently.
" I think we'll stick with Severus for now and if later on we so choose, we will call you dad." He smiled and nodded. I looked at Harry once again, questioning with my eyes. Severus looked at us in amazement as we silently communicated. " We'll stay with you, but we don't want to be a burden if you are unprepared for our presence."
" Well, I do have an extra room in my quarters, if you two don't mind sharing until term starts I can have Judy take away the full sized bed and replace it with two twin beds." We nodded. " Judy, come here please." A little creature just appeared in the room, it looked kinder than the goblins I met at the bank today, but I still screamed bloody murder when she appeared out of nowhere. Severus patted my shoulder in consolation.
" Judy is sorry young mistress. Judy didn't mean to scare you. Master Snape, what can Judy help you with?"
" Judy can you replace the bed in the extra bedroom in my quarters with two twin sized beds? Also before you do that, can you tell Albus and Minerva that they may come back?"
" Yes sir! Judy will do both tasks, sir." Then she disappeared. I jumped when she did. I looked at Severus with questioning eyes.
" It's ok Anne. That was Judy, she's the professor's house elf. If you two ever need anything just call her name and she'll find you." I nodded. A moment later McGonagall and Dumbledore walked through the door. Dumbledore spoke first.
" Well … I can see we are all properly introduced. Now for what to call us. Of course during school you'll call us by our proper names, including your father, but Minerva and I have agreed you may call us by our first names because our last names are really a mouthful."
" So Albus and Minerva?" Harry squeaked. Minerva smiled at him and nodded.
" Or Aunt Minerva and Uncle Albus if you want." Minerva suggested to Harry. I knew what she was trying to do. She's trying to help Harry make new memories of what an aunt and uncle were supposed to be. Harry looked frightened at the suggestion.
" But I don't want you to be my aunt and uncle. They hit you when you do freakish things." Harry whispered this after he mustered all the courage he had. Minerva, Severus, and Albus all saddened at this comment from my abused brother.
" Harry listen to me, family is not supposed to hurt you. Those muggles you lived with were the worst sort. You are smart and kind and not a freak. If you're a freak then we all are because we all have the same powers. Now if you really don't want to call me Aunt Minerva I understand that you are scared. But I think deep down in there you're a brave little boy who can overcome his fears of his family that he never should have been placed with." Harry squeezed my hand even tighter.
" Alright now?" Uncle Albus asked Harry. Harry nodded and took a step back so I wouldn't have to extend my arm any longer. " How about we go meet the rest of the staff and have a nice dinner." Uncle Albus took Aunt Minerva's arm and started walking down the stairs. Harry and I kept our fingers intertwined and Severus set one hand on my shoulder and the other on Harry's and gave us a slight nudge to follow behind our new Aunt and Uncle. Severus went ahead of us and started whispering to the adults. Me and Harry were guessing what all the other teachers would be like. If you'd have to wiggle your way into their hardened hearts like Severus or like Aunt Minerva and Uncle Albus, who have that twinkle in their eyes that lets you know they already care about you. I noticed, Severus acquired that the longer we spoke to him. I really think I'm going to like it here. That is if my parents don't force me to come home. They said they don't want to lose me, but I belong here. They won't call me a freak here if I mess up. Will they? Maybe they're just trying to make me vulnerable and exploit my weaknesses. I've already told them a lot. But they seem genuine enough. I will just have to tread lightly and see where I fit into this new family.
" Oh they are such cute little saplings, Albus! Whose children are they?" Professor Sprout inquired. Albus smiled at her in agreement.
" Well, that's for someone else to answer." He gave a pointed look towards Severus. Severus looked very sheepish and from what I have gathered from him he acts very collected around his colleagues. Severus finally gathered the courage to admit we were his. You can tell Harry and I are related to him by our lack of courage to speak out.
" They are mine, Pomona." Severus said as he quickly collected himself into the stern man I'm assuming they know him by.
" Now, Severus, stop joking about. Albus whose are they?" Sprout asked once more.
" I believe that Severus just answered your question a moment again Pomona." The shocked look that was on all the teacher's faces was hilarious. Flitwick, Trelawney, Burbage, Quirrell, and Sprout.
" You're serious, Albus?" Albus, Severus, and Minerva all nodded their heads. " Well, I apologize for the disbelief Severus. I just never thought you to be the fatherly type. What are your names, children?" I turned to look at Harry and he spoke for us.
" Um … my name's Harry and this is Anne."
" Oh such sweet names. Are you twins? Who is your mother? . . . Yes, Severus, who is their mother?"
" Um . . . we are twins ma'am." I stepped in. " Our mother's name is-" I stopped short when my father gave me a pointed look.
" It doesn't matter who their mother is, Pomona. She has long since passed on. She passed on when they were only 1, so they don't know her."
" Excuse my curiosity Severus, but I'd like to know the name of the woman that wiggled her way into your heart. Why don't you tell me, Harry did you say?" Harry did as he was asked, fearful he'd be punished if he didn't.
" Her name was Lily." Severus looked nervous.
" Lily? Lily Potter? Wait. Harry. And your mother is Lily Potter. No, your father is James Potter."
" I thought he was. But recent events have proven that theory wrong. Wait . . . Severus, why was our mother's last name Potter and not Snape. Did you never get married? Is that her maiden name or something?" Severus was definitely embarrassed now.
" Umm … children why don't we go finish dinner in my private quarters and I can speak to you alone about your mother." Harry was confused, but I understood. Our mother cheated on her husband James Potter with our father Severus Snape and conceived us. I wonder if our step-dad James knew we weren't his actual children. We followed Severus out of the Dining Hall and into a dark corridor. He walked up to a portrait and muttered, " Poopheaded Gryfindors."
" Harry, what's a Gryfindor?" He shrugged his shoulders, " No idea!" We followed Severus into his living quarters and it was very nice. It was a large, roomy living room where all the furniture was green and silver. You'd think since we were in the dungeons there would be no light, but there were windows and the room was brightly lit by only natural lighting.
" Kids I don't appreciate you telling them who your mother is. Don't worry Harry I'm not mad. It's just . . . Harry, you know how you thought James was your father . . . well right before your mother and him got married . . . we conceived you two . . . I'm assuming she told James that you were his. You have your mother's eyes, but me and James have the same color hair and you got my hair … so this wasn't hard for her to hide. I didn't want you to tell them because I wanted to keep your mother's memory in the light because everyone thought she was perfect, which I think she was, and that she could do no wrong, but she did do something wrong. She cheated on James with me. I can take the shame I don't care, but I didn't want a bad light placed on her grave." I felt bad I hadn't told Harry to stop talking when I should have. I guessed it and I was right.
" I'm so sorry! I didn't know!" Harry sniffled and tried to keep the tears from falling. Severus did something I didn't expect and took Harry into his arms. I don't think Harry expected this either, because he burst into tears and hugged him right back. I felt awkward standing there watching until he pulled me into his arms as well.
" There is much we still have to learn about each other, children. We have only just met, but I already know how much I care for you and it's frightening. But if you want to try, we can try and become a proper family." Harry and I both nodded our heads and even though he couldn't see us I knew he could feel the movement of our heads against his chest. " Alright, are you hungry?" I looked towards Harry as Severus released us.
" No, sir. I think if we are able it's time for Harry and I to go to bed." He nodded his understanding as he has done so much today.
" I understand, but may I ask how do you do that?" I was confused by what he meant.
" Sorry sir, but I don't quite understand the question." He sighed, " Well, the two of you just look at each other and seem to know what the other is thinking. It's amazing and I just don't understand it."
" I don't know. I mean . . . I don't know, we just do." He looked disappointed that I didn't have a proper answer and I apologized. He bid us good-night and sent us off to bed where our newly bought things sat at the ends of our beds.
" Good night Harry." I was very tired after the long emotionally taxing day and I'm sure it was worse for Harry because he seems very sensitive. I'm just intuitive, so many of the days issues I can predict and prepare for previously. " Good night Anne. I'm kind of glad to have a nice sister now and not a mean cousin anymore." He seemed nervous to exploit these feelings. " I'm glad I'm not an only child anymore." I told him.
