Izuku sat in the doctor's office, looking at the x-ray of his foot.
"As you can see, it's only a matter of time before Izuku gets his quirk. He has no extra joint in his pinky toe."
Inko nodded slowly. "So he can be a hero? It's all he's ever wanted and-and—"
"Rest assured. I'm sure he can be a hero once his quirk manifests."
Izuku smiled brightly. "I can be a hero!" He cheered.
.
.
.
Not all men are created equal. That was a cold hard fact Izuku learned when his quirk manifested itself.
.
.
.
"Why are you doing this Kacchan? You're making him cry!"
"Shut up Deku! Someone with some useless 'analysis' quirk like you shouldn't get in my way!"
Katsuki lunged, and Izuku's brain went into overdrive.
He's coming fast. I should dodge left, no right! He's leading from the left, so right. Yeah, right!
Izuku's brain slowed, and he was about to dodge when he felt a fist connect with his face. His brain might be fast. He might be able to come up with a way to dodge, or analyze a situation in a split second, but it meant nothing. Because he was still slow, still had a useless quirk that couldn't be used in combat. At that moment Izuku decided to become strong, no matter what it took.
.
.
.
"Are you sure that's what you want for your birthday?" Inko asked.
Izuku's eyes shimmered as he nodded, looking at the grip builders and the ten pound weights. They might be expensive, but Izukus's dad had a job in America. They could afford it.
.
.
.
"I was expecting toys, but no, he wants weights. What am I going to do, Hisashi? I want him to be normal. I want him to have friends."
"He wants to be a hero, and has a useless quirk. It was either this or watch his dream slowly crumble," Hisashi said.
"But Hisashi!"
"Shhh, you'll wake him up!" Hisashi whispered over the phone.
Unknown to either of them, Izuku watched them from his door. And he would never forget what his mom had said.
.
.
.
Nine years later. Izuku age 14. Last day of school.
"I'm supposed to pass out the job sheets today but… you all want to be heroes right?" Izuku's teacher finished, tossing the papers in the air.
This was met with cheers as all of the students began showing off their quirks.
"Yes you all have wonderful quirks. But remember not to use them in the classroom."
"Don't lump me in with these extras," said a loud voice from the middle of the room. Katsuki Bakugou had his feet propped up on his desk and was leaning back casually.
His statement was met with loud jeers and a few glares.
"Oh that's right Katsuki, you wanted to go to UA right?"
"That's right! Me and Izuku are gonna soar, and the rest of you will have to follow us from the ground."
Flashback:
Izuku stood before a young Bakugou as he cowered behind him. He had picked a fight with a group of ruffians, and was paying the price. Now Izuku was there to help with a shaky smile on his face.
"N-Never fear! I-I-I Am H-Here!"
"Ha ha ha, the kid thinks he's All Might!" One of the men shouted, with a laugh.
The other two closed in on Izuku and Bakugou.
Left.
Izuku jumped to the left dodging a kick. He had honed his reflexes for just such a time.
Left again. No, right, it's a feint.
Izuku dodged right. This continued with all three of them missing attacks until the police happened by and arrested the three men. After that, Katsuki had apologized, and Izuku had forgiven him.
Flashback end.
Izuku grimaced as a few eyes were turned his way.
After class — finally — ended, Izuku started the trek home with Katsuki.
"It's Izuku and I, not me and Izuku," Izuku said.
"That's how you greet me? Huh mister scaredy pants? Yeah, I saw you shrink in your seat. We really need to work on that confidence. At least you got rid of the stutter, yeah?"
"Y-Yeah. Just kidding!" Izuku dodged a swipe from Katsuki. "You need to learn to take a joke Kacchan."
They continued their banter all the way to the train, and then until Katsuki got off.
"I better see you at the entrance exam for UA, got it?" Katsuki said before exiting the train.
Izuku nodded, even though Katsuki was already gone.
On a whim, Izuku got off at the next stop, deciding to walk home. It was only two train stops away, so it wasn't a super long walk. He was just passing under a short tunnel when he heard: "A new invisibility cloak, size M."
He had time to spin before the slime thing was upon him. He activated his quirk just before the slime enveloped him completely.
It's almost surrounded me. There is no exit, but it's thinnest behind me. So I'll jump—
"Back!" Izuku shouted just after deactivating his quirk and leaping backwards. He soared right over the slime, and it enveloped thin air. It turned back to him.
"Don't waste your time or mine boy. Just give me that meat suit."
With this, the sludge jumped forward again. With more warning, Izuku analyzed and dodged with ease.
They continued their back and forth until—
"I Am Here!"
"Shi—"
That was all the slime got out before being splattered across the pavement.
Izuku stared at his hero as he began collecting the slime in bottles.
"Can I have your autograph?" He asked without ceremony or preamble.
"Sure my boy! Do you have something to write with?"
Izuku dug through his backpack until he found one of his many notebooks, and a pen. He handed them over and the pro hero signed it with a flourish before handing them both back.
"Now I must be going. Evil never rests and all that!"
All Might crouched, getting ready for a jump.
Izuku activated his quirk.
I don't want him to leave. I have questions! So many questions! How can I make him stay. Or… I could go with him? Yes that might work. But it has to be quick. My quirk doesn't stop time. Just makes me think faster.
Izuku jumped forward, grabbing All Might's leg just before he lifted off.
"What the? Kid? I like fans, but this is too much! Let go!"
"If I let go I'll die!" Izuku yelled, somewhat shocked by his own actions.
"That's true. I didn't think of that. Well then, it's time to land!"
All might aimed for a rooftop and dived down, landing shockingly softly.
"Now kid, that was dangerous and irresponsible what if I had— blerg!" All Might spewed blood and started steaming.
"Are you okay!" Izuku yelled, shocked.
"I'm fine, kid."
The wind picked up, blowing away the steam. All Might stood there in all his glory.
Izuku passed out.
