Hello friends! Just a wee oneshot to fill in a badthingshappenbingo square. Lurkingwhump, thank you for your help with this fic.
The countdown is on for s5. I'm so excited! I also hope everyone is staying safe in this scary world we currently live in.
Kurt walked into the apartment to find Jane lying on the couch, staring at the ceiling. His brow furrowed. The last time he had seen her like this, she was in the middle of a nervous breakdown.
"Hey." he said softly, putting his keys on the counter.
"Hey yourself." she replied, smiling tiredly. She sat up, giving him room to sit down beside her.
"You ok?" Kurt asked, worried at the dull look to her eyes.
"Yeah, I'm fine." she replied automatically, then sighed at the pointed look her husband was giving her. "Ok… so I'm not so fine."
Kurt frowned.
"What's going on, Jane?" he asked, putting his arm around her.
She shrugged, biting her lip.
"It's just been a rough year." she whispered.
Kurt nodded, tightening his grip on her. With him getting shot, to Jane's ZIP poisoning and her getting buried alive, to the fight against Madeline… Madeline was locked away - for good this time and their names were cleared, but the scars of their journey were far from healed. "That it has." he replied finally. He shuffled on the couch, pulling a piece of paper out of his back pocket. "Which is why, I've booked us a weekend away at the cabin upstate."
Jane's eyes flicked up to his, her face hopeful.
"Really Kurt?"
Kurt grinned.
"Yes and no distractions. Patterson has strict instructions, that unless the city is literally on fire, we will not be disturbed."
"...and Rich?" Jane asked, unconvinced. Every time they got a moment alone, someone always interrupted them.
"Covered."
Jane's face broke out in a giant smile.
"Thank you Kurt." she whispered. This was exactly what they needed. After everything that had happened, a little quality time together was long overdue.
"Now there's just one problem." Kurt confessed.
Jane raised her left eyebrow. What now?
"The cabin is in the middle of nowhere… there's no internet… no cell service… no TV… what ever will we do?" he asked, smirking suggestively.
Jane replied by jumping on him, straddling his hips. "I'm sure we will figure something out." she said, leaning in and kissing him gently."So when do we leave?" she asked and Kurt groaned. Having her pressed up against him, her sweet scent filling his nose… he was tempted to take her right here and now…
Jane chuckled.
"There will be plenty of time for that later." she chastised playfully.
Kurt groaned again. "In that case, you better get off me."
Jane grinned, and moved back onto her feet, walking towards the kitchen. She gave him a questioning look.
"Weitz has agreed to a long weekend. We can leave as soon as you're packed." He got off the couch, joining her in the kitchen. He took her back in his arms, pecking her on the mouth. She reached up, wrapping her arms around his neck and kissed him softly. She pulled away and looked deep into his eyes.
"Well I guess I better go pack then." Jane said, taking off for the bedroom, leaving a stunned Kurt by himself. If she carried on this way, he was going to need a lot of cold showers

A snowstorm hit just as they arrived at the cabin. Kurt unloaded the bags, while Jane unlocked the door and turned the lights on. It was cold inside, the fire long gone out from the previous tenants.
"I'll get a fire going." Kurt said, placing the bags in the living room. "Why don't you check out the place."
Jane nodded. "I'll pour you some wine."
Kurt disappeared back into the night. Jane took the opportunity to pour them each a glass of wine, before picking up their luggage and moving further into the cabin.
It was fashioned in a dark tongue and groove pine, with low ceilings and old rustic light fixtures, that bathed the rooms in a soft orange glow.
There was only one bedroom and a bathroom. Small, quaint and cozy.
Jane shivered… or maybe not so cozy. It was freezing in the bedroom. She returned to the living room to find Kurt covered in snow, carrying an armload of wood.
He crouched in front of the fireplace, popping a couple of fire starters onto the grates and covering them with kindling. After only a few minutes he had a hearty fire crackling.
Jane joined him on the ground in front of the fire, holding her hands out to try and warm them a little.
"You alright?" Kurt asked, watching as her teeth started chattering.
She chucked.
"Just a little cold."
He reached out, putting his arm around her, pulling her close.
"Why don't we sleep out here tonight?" he suggested. "It's already late and it means we only have to heat the one room."
Jane's smile was the only answer he needed.
"Help me with the mattress?" he asked, helping her to her feet. Together they pulled the mattress and the bedding into the living room, situating everything in front of the fire. Jane moved to the kitchen to get their wine while Kurt straightened out the blankets.
He plonked onto the mattress and accepted the offered glass. Jane dimmed the lights and joined him, the fire crackling, slowly warming their chilled bones.
They sat in a serene silence for a while, just enjoying each other's company and the atmosphere - especially that of not being interrupted.
"You warming up?" he asked, breaking the silence.
Jane pursed her lips, side eyeing her husband. She cleared her throat, the corners of her mouth turning up.
"I'm still a little cold." she said, giving him a pointed look.
"Oh, well I think I can help with that." he said grinning, lifting his arm and pulling her close. He put their wine glasses on the coffee table next to his head and turned back to his wife, cupping her cheek and kissing her softly.
She moved so she was straddling his hips again, though this time she wasn't teasing him. This time she wouldn't pull away.
"I love you." she murmured, between kisses.
"I love you too." he replied, flipping her onto her back and covering her body with his own...

"Kurt! KUUURT!" Jane's blood curdling scream filled the small cabin. Kurt, who had been cleaning up from breakfast, took off at a run towards Jane's calls.
"Jane!?" he shouted. "Jane!" he sprinted outside, following the sound of her cries. The image in front of him stopping him dead in his tracks. "Oh fuck."
Jane was neck deep in the icy pond on the back of the property. Her hair was wet, indicating she had already been submerged. She had managed to get her arms out of the water onto the ice.
"Jane!"
"I'm s-sorry K-kurt. I d-didn't know it was a p-pond."
"It's alright Jane." Kurt soothed, assessing the situation. "Can you pull yourself out?" he asked, though he knew she had probably already tried.
Jane nodded, her movements erratic. She felt around, trying to find a hold she could use to pull herself out. Finding nothing, she splayed her fingers and used her warning strength to try and pull herself up. She made it onto her elbows, before the ice cracked and she slipped under the ice again.
"Jane!" Kurt yelled from the edge of the pond. "Jane!" He was about to rush out onto the ice himself, when she reappeared, gasping for breath. A strangled cry escaped her mouth.
"Jane! Are you ok?"
Jane spluttered but managed to nod. Kurt could see her lips starting to turn blue. He needed to get her out - and fast.
"I'm gonna find something to pull you out." he called. Taking one last look at his terrified wife, he left, racing back around to the front of the property, where he had seen some rope earlier. He returned to Jane, tying a loop in the rope and throwing it to her.
Her movements were jittery, her muscles rigid from the icy water, but she still managed to get the loop over her head and under her armpits.
"You ready?" Kurt asked.
Jane couldn't speak, her teeth were chattering too hard, but she managed to nod in affirmation.
"Alright… I'm gonna pull you out slowly. Once you're on the ice, you need to stay flat. It will help spread your weight more evenly." Kurt said. He heaved Jane out of the pond so she was lying on her belly, and hauled her back onto solid ground.
Once she was back on the grass, he sat her up and pulled the rope back over her head.
"Come on Jane." he said softly, before pulling her arm around his neck, and lifting her against his chest. He hurried her inside, her whole body shaking, her breaths choppy.
He sat her on the couch near the fire, moving swiftly into the room where she had left their luggage the night before. He retrieved her bag and a couple of towels from the bathroom, before returning quickly. She was still in the same position he had left her, face pale, lips blue, dripping water on the couch and floor.
She was shivering uncontrollably, her breaths coming out in short, shakey gasps.
Kurt rummaged through her bag, pulling out a complete change of clothes.
"We need to get you out of these clothes." Kurt said seriously, crouching down in front of her. "Easy does it… slow movements." he murmured, helping her out of her shirt and sports bra. Jane cried out, the movement sending tendrils of pain through her cramping frozen body. After patting her dry, he dressed her in a few layers of thermals and one of his hoodies.
He assisted her out of her sodden pants and underwear, before helping her into a pair of warm sweats. He finished by towel drying her hair as best he could and covering her hair with a warm beanie. All the while Jane was trying to get her body under control. She could barely stand, so she was so thankful for Kurt's support.
"Here Jane." Kurt said softly, picking her up again and carrying her onto the mattress that was still in front of the fire from the night before. He lay her gently on the mattress, bundling the blankets around her, before climbing in beside her and pulling her to his chest.
"Ssshhh." he soothed. "Just relax baby."
Jane pressed herself into his side, trying to soak his warmth into her frozen limbs. Kurt held her tightly, rubbing her back softly, to try and get her body to calm down.
They lay in front of the fire for a good 20 minutes, before the shaking in Jane's body started to slow down.
"I'm going to make you a hot chocolate." Kurt said, deciding her hands would now be steady enough to hold the mug. "The sugar will help with the shock as well."
Jane missed his warmth the moment he had extracted himself from the pile of blankets. She watched him spoon an exuberant amount of sugar into the mug of hot chocolate, her teeth hurting just thinking about it. But he was right. The warm beverage would help warm her from the inside and the sugar would help with the underlying shock.
He put the mug on the coffee table, before helping her sit up, holding her against his chest. He passed her the mug. "Small sips." he said gently.
Jane couldn't help but grin and she lifted the mug to her mouth.
"What?" Kurt asked, catching the expression on her face.
"I know how to treat hypothermia too, Kurt." she said, taking another drink.
Kurt smirked sheepishly. "Well then you'll know that hypothermia can cause confusion. I was just making sure you weren't suffering mentally."
Jane closed her eyes, chuckling softly.
The drink was beginning to work its magic. She didn't realise just how awful she was feeling, until the symptoms started to dissipate. The general sick feeling she had been experiencing, along with the shakes from the cold and the shock, were slowly seeping away.
Once she had drained the hot chocolate, Kurt took the mug and placed it back onto the coffee table.
"Feeling better?" Kurt asked, kissing her forehead. She was still cool, but he could definitely feel her temperature rising. They didn't have a thermometer with them, so he had to rely on touch to gauge her temperature.
"Much." Jane said gratefully. "Thank you for saving me." she said, nuzzling his neck.
"Always." he replied straight away. "And besides, it gives us an excuse to stay in bed today."
Jane smiled up at her husband. She still couldn't believe she had been so stupid. How had she not realised there was a deep pond on the back of the property? In her defense, the yard was covered with a thick layer of snow and there had been no way to differentiate the grass from the water.
She shrugged, settling in against his chest again.
It had been a really rough year. And if today's events had taught her anything, it was that life is full of obstacles. She can't just dwell on the bad.
"We're going to be ok, right?" she asked in a small voice.
"Of course we are, baby."
He sounded so sure, so sure that they would be able to overcome anything that was thrown their way.
"I'll hold you to that." she quipped.
Kurt kissed her forehead. "You do that."
