A/N: Okay, before I start, it's only fair to warn you that if you are a hard core, "do it right or not at all" Star Wars reader... probably skip this story. I have a tendency to forget terms/protocol and wrote this for fun. Plus, it was hard keeping people in character. That being said, if you brave this story and have some suggestions for tweaks to make it better, I'm all ears!
This story is dedicated to Cuthalion97, who got me back into Clone Wars and Prophe-Cass, who let me put "Anakin" and "amnesia" in a sentence and encouraged it. XD None of the characters belong to me, except for Crawl.
The fact that Ahsoka's first thought upon waking with a sore neck and smoke in her nose was, "We must have crashed," probably said something about her time as Anakin's padawan. Nevertheless, she usually was right in her thoughts, and this time around was no different.
"General! Kid! Can you hear me?"
And there was Rex, pretending to not be frightened about them.
Ahsoka coughed, then said, "Yeah, I'm here."
"Are you alright?"
"Yeah."
"Can you see General Skywalker?"
Ahsokah blinked her eyes open. Yep, busted cockpit. Sparks leaped from the console, and the main viewport was shattered. The cockpit was actually level, but Ahsoka's seat had been knocked out of place at some point so she sat at an awkward angle.
Ahsoka pushed herself straight to survey the cockpit. The seat beside her was completely gone, so she twisted to get a better look around.
The rest of the cockpit was even worse. There was a huge gash in the floor, starting from the floor of the missing seat and running diagonally to the opposite wall. The crash had dislodged the controls behind the pilot's seat. The doorway was bent oddly, jamming the door so there was only a small gap near the floor. Gloved fingers jerked at the busted door to no avail.
"Master?" Ahsoka said when she didn't see Anakin.
She remembered him sitting beside her during the sky battle, but he'd gotten up at some point… Right, when a blast had torn through the floor. Anakin's chair had been struck, so he'd unbuckled and tried to land the damaged ship standing over the gash in the floor. Because, of course he would.
There was a shriek of metal, then Rex grunted. "It'll do. Get in there, Crawl."
Ahsoka twisted around again in time to see a mess of dark hair push through the enlarger gap. A small-ish clone known as Crawl squirmed through the gap and stood.
"Are you alright, Commander?" Crawl asked, approaching the lopsided seat.
"Fine." Ahsoka tried to release the seat restraints, but they had jammed. "See if you can find Anakin."
Crawl looked around, then winced and ducked out of sight. "General Skywalker?"
"How is he?" Rex asked. He'd removed his helmet to get through the busted door like Crawl but couldn't fit his larger shoulders, and had to settle with just watching.
"Breathing, sir," Crawl said.
Ahsoka slammed a fist against her restraints, finally freeing herself. She dropped to the floor, then had to catch herself on the chair. Her left leg was bruised from the pilot seat hitting it, but Ahsoka simply made sure nothing was broken before limping to Anakin.
Anakin was sprawled on his stomach against the wall, underneath the missing pilot's seat. His face was bruised and scratched, and blood oozed from a gash on the back of his head. He didn't react to Ahsoka's nudges.
Ahsoka winced. "Help me move the chair."
Crawl nodded and took up position at the top of the chair. Ahsoka put her back to the chair and braced herself to push. Beyond the cockpit door, Rex started barking out orders.
"Oz, Ringo, get that door open. Tup, help Charger."
"I'm fine," came Charger's voice, quickly followed by a thud.
"Yes, Charger, because shrapnel in your leg is just fine," Tup said sarcastically. "Just sit still, would you?"
Ahsoka focused back on her master. "Push on three. One… two… three!"
Ahsoka shoved her weight back. Her leg twinged in protest, but she persisted until she and Crawl pushed the heavy chair enough for it to roll backward and away from Anakin.
"Master," Ahsoka said, kneeling beside Anakin. "Can you hear me?"
Anakin groaned, but Ahsoka wasn't sure whether or not it was confirmation.
"The general's faced worse crashes than this, and walked out laughing," Rex said gruffly. "Crawl, try the radios."
Crawl either nodded or twitched, then stood. "Yes, sir."
Ahsoka watched him cross the cockpit. She glanced at Anakin, then stood and went to the broken view port. She brushed away the remaining transparasteel with a bit of metal, then stepped outside.
They'd crashed in a forest on the planet's surface. Foliage hid most of the ongoing battle in the sky, but Ahsoka could still hear explosions above. Hopefully, the sky battle would stay away from their wrecked ship. Grounded and few in number that they were, they wouldn't stand a chance.
Bangs on metal led Ahsoka around the shuttle to the door, which was jammed shut by a large tree crumpling the metal around the door.
Ahsoka eyed the tree, then pulled out her lightsaber and activated it. She hopped onto the top of the shuttle, then carefully cut away at the tree until it was scattered around in smaller pieces. Once that was done, she tugged at the door. It took a few minutes, but she, Rex, Oz, and Ringo got the door open.
Like Ahsoka, Rex took a moment to scan the skies. He then checked Ahsoka up and down before darting to the front of the shuttle. Probably checking on Anakin.
Ahsoka leaned past Oz and Ringo working the door further open. The shuttle's hold was a mess of scattered supplies, shattered transparasteel from the view ports, and shredded foliage. Charger sat in one corner while Tup carefully worked on his legs.
Ahsoka went to crouch beside Tup. Both clones had their helmets set aside. Charger sat against the wall, eyes closed and head leaned back. Tup side-eyed her, then answered her unspoken question.
"Minimal injuries here. Charger's restraints broke and he took out the storage locker."
Ahsokah glanced at the wrecked locker, then at the bloodied shards of transparasteel Tup was delicately pulling from between Charger's leg plates.
"Oz and Ringo are sore from the restraints, but they'll be fine," Tup went on. "Were you injured, Commander?"
"Just sore," Ahsoka said dismissively.
Both ignored her wince when she stood and limped outside. Oz was banging a transponder and Ringo was keeping an eye on the sky as Ahsoka limped back to the front of the ship.
Rex and Crawl had just finished laying Anakin on the ground. Ahsoka saw his head had already been bandaged and he stirred as he was settled.
"Radios are a mess," Rex reported gruffly. "We'll have to wait here until somebody follows the smoke."
"I might be able to get them working," Crawl offered, eyes on his feet.
Ahasokah glanced at Anakin, then shook her head. "Try Oz's transponder. It won't reach the main destroyer, but there are bound to be some starfighters in range."
Crawl nodded, then darted toward the others like he had a rancor on his tail. Despite being with the 501st for months, Crawl was still as jumpy as a shiny.
Anakin groaned, catching the pair's attention. Ahsoka looked down and grinned when Anakin's eyes opened a slit.
"Welcome back to the living," Ahsoka said.
Anakin blinked at her. "Who…?"
"Everyone's fine, thanks to your fancy flying, Skyguy," Ahsoka said, guessing he was more worried about his team than himself like normal.
Anakin just stared at her.
"Um…" Ahsoka glanced at Rex. "Captain, could you check the perimeter?"
"Of course," Rex said, marching away to give the two Jedi some space.
Ahsoka looked at Anakin, who had a very confused expression on his face. "Do you remember the crash?"
"No…"
Ahsoka pushed back her worry at the hesitation in Anakin's voice. "Well, not much to say. The shuttle is wrecked, though. The engines look fine, but the controls are torn to pieces. The transponders are down, so there's no telling how long we'll be here."
"Where's here?" Anakin asked.
"The planet Julip," Ahsoka said. "Master… what's the last thing you remember?"
"Remember?"
"Not funny, Skyguy." Ahsokah crouched, then sat when her leg protested. "Seriously, what do you remember last?"
Anakin stared at her for a long moment before simply saying, "Nothing."
Now it was Ahsoka's turn to stare. "Um… okay, let's try this. What's your name?"
"Uh…" Anakin cocked his head to the side. "Skyguy?"
"I'll be right back, Master," Ahsoka whispered, then quickly stood and left.
"Captain."
Ahsoka's voice caused Rex to turn. The padawan walked to his side and stared silently for a moment.
Rex decided to fill the silence. "General Skywalker chose the perfect landing site, it would seem."
When Ahasoka looked at him, Rex swept a hand toward the steep drop mere feet away. There were similar cliffs on two other sides of them. In the distance, the smoldering remains of the outpost they had just left trailed smoke.
"Yeah… lucky."
Rex raised an eyebrow, the motion lost since he'd replaced his helmet. "Something wrong?"
Ahsoka hesitated before saying, "We have a problem. Anakin doesn't seem to remember anything."
"I see," Rex said calmly. Spotting Ahsoka's frustrated frown, he waved a hand. "This has happened before, kid. General Skywalker will be confused for a bit, then he'll sleep it off. Although, last time this happened, he wandered off…" Rex promptly turned and headed toward the cruiser again.
"This has happened before?" Ahsoka asked, trailing Rex.
"Yeah." Rex chuckled. "I've never seen him so placid. He thought his name was 'General' and he listened to everything anyone said." Rex glanced at Ahsoka and cleared his throat. "Anyway. You said he thinks his name is 'Skyguy'?"
Ahsokah nodded.
"Well, good luck convincing him otherwise."
In the previous instance, Anakin had taken everything said to him seriously and refused to believe any changes attempted to be made. This had let to Rex being called "Blue" the entirety of the mission, due to Jesse's sense of humor.
The pair reached Anakin, who had sat up and was looking around in obvious confusion. He brightened at their arrival.
"General," Rex greeted. He hesitated, then added when Anakin glanced behind him, "That's you, sir."
"Oh." Anakin cocked his head. "I'm sorry, I don't know your names."
"I'm Rex, sir," Rex said promptly, unperturbed. His mouth twitched slightly as he gestured to Ahsoka and added, "And you call our commander, Snips."
"Captain," Ahsokah huffed, but that was her only protest.
If Anakin was going to be "General Skyguy" until the general regained his memory, it was only fair that Ahsoka was called "Snips". Anakin might be able to find the situation at least a bit amusing afterwords, at least.
"Nice to meet you, Captain Rex and Commander Snips," Anakin said with a bright smile.
Rex twitched in barely suppressed laughter. "Just, uh… call me Rex, sir."
"Alright."
Ahsoka rubbed her forehead. "How long before he's back to normal?"
"Hard to say." An explosion made them look up. "Hopefully not long."
"What was that?" Anakin asked.
"Firefight, sir," Rex explained.
"Should we help?"
Rex glanced at Ahsoka, since she was technically in command until the general returned to normal. Ahsoka shook her head.
"We can't help from the ground, Master," Ahsoka said. "We'll need to wait here until General Kenobi can send someone for us."
"Who's General Kenobi?" Anakin asked.
"He's… your master," Ahsoka said.
"Oh." Anakin rubbed his head. "Why can't I remember him?"
"You hit your head. It's amnesia, sir," Rex supplied.
"There's a name for this?" Ahasoka asked. "How often does this happen?"
Anakin looked equally confused. "This happens a lot?"
"No, thankfully," Rex said to the both of them. He got the feeling that it was going to be a long day. "Just once before."
"But I will remember," Anakin clarified.
"Yes, sir."
"Then it's fine!"
Anakin stood abruptly. He was completely undeterred by his wobbling sideways or Ahsoka jumping forward to steady him.
"Here, lean on me, Master," Ahsoka said.
"Thanks, Snips," Anakin said cheerfully. He frowned a moment later. "But, you're hurt, too."
"Just a bruise," Ahsoka said, since she and Anakin typically ignored their injuries. Which… explained why he was standing already. "How do you feel?"
"Fine," Anakin said.
Anakin turned and tried to walk away, forcing Ahsoka to follow. With Anakin still unsteady and Ahsoka limping, they made for a very slow pair.
Rex sighed. It was going to be a very interesting day.
It didn't take long for the clones to take their positions until they were found. Rex stood on top of the wrecked shuttle, keeping an eye on the sky and his team. Oz and Ringo patrolled the perimeter, while Crawl and Tup puzzled over busted communicators and watched Charger.
Ahsoka had her hands full with Anakin, who still didn't remember a thing and wanted to relearn everything possible. It didn't matter that he couldn't walk in a straight line for more than two steps, he was still too stubborn to remain still. The others were taking Anakin's issue in stride, luckily, even if Crawl and Charger just looked confused when their general asked a very obvious question.
So it was a relief when Anakin decided that he could get the shuttle back in the air. Ahsoka left him to tinker with an engine that he didn't recognize in the slightest, but he was content to "work" on it.
Ahsoka stood on the shuttle roof with Rex, where it would be easier to keep an eye on Anakin. Rex made good company while they kept watch.
This worked until it began to darken. Ahsoka was about to suggest that Anakin find some light, when her master suddenly stood and walked toward the trees.
With a brief word to Rex, Ahsoka jumped to Anakin's side. "What is it, Master?"
Anakin startled. "How'd you get here so fast?"
"I… jumped, Master."
Anakin's eyes went from Ahsoka to the shuttle roof. "Wish I could jump like that."
"You can. Further, even."
Ahsoka knew she'd made a mistake when Anakin crouched. She quickly reached out to catch his arm.
"You'd better stick to walking," Ahsoka said. "At least until you can remember how to catch yourself, Master."
"Why do you keep calling me 'Master'?" Anakin asked.
"Well… you are."
"My name's Skyguy, though. I like that better."
"Uh…" Ahsoka grinned awkwardly. "Okay."
"Good." Anakin waved a hand. "You coming?"
"Where are you going?" Ahsoka asked, falling in step beside him.
"I want to know what Oz and Ringo are doing."
"Oh, they're patrolling the perimeter."
"Why?"
"To keep the team safe."
"From who?"
Ahsoka winced. "Scavengers. They're the ones who shot down our shuttle, remember?"
"No," Anakin said cheerfully. "But why would they do that?"
"They didn't do their research," Ahsoka muttered. Anakin looked at her, so she went on, "They thought our ships were transporting resources, and thought they could steal them from us."
"And what were we doing?"
"Outpost inspections."
Anakin hummed, then was distracted by clone armor ahead. Ahsoka was silently glad he didn't ask more about the outpost. Anakin didn't take the deaths of clones well under normal circumstances; she wasn't sure how he'd react in his condition.
"Oz! Ringo!" Anakin called.
The two clones stopped, turned, and saluted in perfect sync. Ahsoka had noticed how they so closely mimicked each other, even more so than most teams.
"Perimeter is secure, General," Oz said.
"That's great!" Anakin said.
Oz and Ringo's helmets twitched slightly toward each other. Ahsoka didn't blame them.
"We'll leave you to it," Ahsoka said.
"I want to help," Anakin said before the pair could leave.
"Uh… help?" Ringo asked.
"Yeah! With the patrol."
Oz and Ringo glanced at each other, then shrugged.
"If you want, General," Oz said.
"Firefight is dying down, Commander," Ringo added to Ahsoka.
Ahsoka nodded in acknowledgement. She'd been too distracted with Anakin to notice. Anakin, though, frowned in disappointment.
"So, back to the shuttle?" Anakin asked.
Ahsoka glanced at the clones, standing ready for her orders, then decided, "Let's check the perimeter one last time, then see how Tup and Crawl are doing with communications."
"Yes, sir!" Oz and Ringo said simultaneously.
If nothing else, it would keep Anakin occupied for a bit longer.
Ahsoka let Oz and Ringo take the lead. The pair chatted and pointed out landmarks to Anakin, easily including the general in their conversation. Ahsoka wondered if they'd been there when Anakin lost his memory in the past, or if they simply adapted that quickly.
The small patrol finished their sweep and returned to the shuttle before it became too dark. By then, the skies were completely empty.
"Any sign of pick-up, Rex?" Ahsoka asked while Anakin went to peer over Crawl's shoulder, startling the poor clone.
"None, Commander," Rex reported. "Searches have begun over the battlefield, but our shuttle's lights are out."
"I'll get their attention," Ahsoka said.
Ahsoka leaped and kicked off a nearby tree, vaulting herself to the top branches. She landed lightly with a clear view of the sky.
Ahsoka took a second to peer at the searching shuttles to ensure it was really one of theirs, then activated her lightsaber. She lifted it over her head and held it until one of the shuttles turned in her direction. Ahsoka twitched her lightsaber, then leaped and dropped to the top of the shuttle.
"They see us. Get ready, everyone," Ahsoka said.
"Right away." Rex slid to the ground. "Crawl, Tup, forget the radios, pick-up is nearly here."
Anakin's communicator buzzed, then Obi-Wan's voice said, "I suppose you had a nice view of the action, Anakin?"
Anakin stared at his comm with such confusion that Ahsoka couldn't help but laugh. She had to smother her amusement a moment later, though, when Obi-Wan called her communicator.
"Ahsoka, come in."
"I'm here, Master," Ahsoka said, turning when Anakin went to Rex for an explanation.
"Is Anakin with you?"
"He is."
"Is he hurt? He didn't respond."
"He's fine, mostly. We all are, except Charger's legs are in bad shape," Ahsoka reported.
"I see. Then I assume that Anakin's communicator is having some issues?"
"Er, no…" Ahsoka looked up when a shuttle hovered over them. "But we should probably explain in person."
"What has Anakin done this time?" Obi-Wan muttered, likely to himself. Louder, he said, "Well, I'm right above you."
"If you go to the cliff just north of us, we can meet you there. There's no room for landing here, Master," Ahsoka said.
"We'll see you there, then," Obi-Wan said, then cut off communications.
The hovering shuttle moved out of sight. Ahsoka turned back to her team.
"Where'd you get that?" Anakin asked, pointing to Ahsoka's lightsaber.
"Er, I'll explain later."
Anakin nodded with a disappointed frown.
"Pick-up is on the north cliff," Ahsoka said. She looked at Charger, who leaned against the busted shuttle door. "Can you make it there, Charger?"
"Yes, Commander," Charger said.
"It isn't far," Ahsoka said with a nod.
"I'll make it, Commander."
Charger took a step, but promptly stumbled. Tup easily slid beside him, catching his brother and throwing Charger's arm over his shoulder in one move.
"That's normal, even without the injury," Tup cheerfully reported.
Ahsoka checked for Anakin, and was relieved that Rex had taken charge of his general so he wouldn't wander off again. Since everyone was accounted for, Ahsoka waved her hand for everyone to follow.
Ahsoka led the way through the trees, lighting their path with her lightsaber, until they opened up beside the cliff. Obi-Wan's shuttle hovered beside the cliff. The doors were open, revealing Obi-Wan and Cody.
"We were wondering where you were," Obi-Wan said blandly.
Anakin gave him a bright smile. "You must be General Kenobi."
Obi-Wan faltered. Ahsoka once again had to stifle her laughter, focusing on making sure Charger was able to get into the shuttle.
"Yes, sir," Rex said to Anakin, grinning behind his helmet. "Don't worry, he knows you… no need to introduce yourself."
The thought of Obi-Wan or Cody having to call Anakin "Skyguy" forced a snort out of Ahsoka. Obi-Wan raised an eyebrow at her, then Rex, then focused on the oblivious Anakin. The shuttle doors closed behind Crawl, the final to board.
"What happened this time, Anakin?" Obi-Wan asked.
Rex nudged Anakin. "That's you, sir."
Obi-Wan stared at Rex. Anakin spoke up.
"I don't know, actually. Snips seems to know."
Ahsoka shrugged helplessly when the Jedi turned to her. "You do know about amnesia, don't you, Master?"
The expression on Obi-Wan's face was equal parts dawning realization and horror. He looked at Anakin, then back to Ahsoka.
"A result of the crash," Rex said, ignoring Anakin when the general moved to Cody for introductions. "It's happened before. I expect the general will be back to normal soon."
"Yes. I don't know how we'll explain this," Obi-Wan muttered.
"Hey, where are we going?" Anakin asked. "I'm tired."
Obi-Wan pressed a hand to his face. "Any volunteers for getting Anakin to his quarters and keeping him there?"
"It's Cody's turn," Ahsoka and Rex said at the same time.
Anakin woke up with a headache in his quarters. He sat up and stared around the room for a long moment. He touched the bandage on his head, then shrugged and stood.
When he left his quarters, Kix was standing at the door. He silently fell in beside Anakin, who opted to ignore him if Kix wasn't going to lecture him about whatever he'd done to cause the headache.
A bit of wandering found Ahsoka, Obi-Wan, Rex, and Cody studying papers on a desk. Ahsoka glanced up when he stepped beside them.
"Morning, Skyguy," Ahsoka said.
Thinking it was still a bit early for that, Anakin responded, "Morning, Snips." He nodded to Obi-Wan. "Good morning, Master."
Obi-Wan glanced at him. "Morning, Skyguy."
Anakin leaned closer in curiosity over what they were studying. He paused as he processed Obi-Wan's words. He groaned, prompting the others to turn to him.
"Snips, however do you manage?"
Ahsoka blinked. "Manage what?"
"How did you convince Obi-Wan to call me 'Skyguy'?"
As if Anakin wasn't confused enough, Ahsoka responded with a laugh. Rex gave a suspicious sounding cough, while Obi-Wan and Cody looked on with smug expressions. Kix slipped away without a word.
"I knew you'd sleep it off, General," Rex said.
"Sleep what off? Ahsoka, what's so funny?"
"Sorry, Master," Ahsoka said, sounding anything but apologetic. "But you wouldn't believe me if I told you."
Anakin crossed his arms, unimpressed as Rex lost his battle with his laughter. "Try me."
Through her snickers, Ahsoka explained what had happened the previous day. The crash, Anakin's amnesia, his utter confusion with everything, his assurance that his name was "Skyguy," and ending with the battle of getting an amnesiac Jedi who'd just rediscovered the Force to bed.
And Ahsoka was right. Anakin didn't believe a word of it.
A/N: Can somebody please write amnesiac Anakin wandering around the ship and using the Force? XD I don't know how to write Force-related things, thus the skipped scene.
Also, the cover is Andy the AT-AT, made by my sister. XD
