A/N: Honestly, I've been a bit obsessed with Suits recently especially with Harvey. I just needed to write this plot bunny down. And this is my first story that I'm posting here so please be kind.
Disclaimer: I own nothing but my OCs and the plot of this Semi-AU.
Chapter One: "Do you have an appointment?"
Nancy was bored.
It had been a bit of a slow day at Pearson Hardman, what with most of the associates working on a case in the firm library, partners and assistants alike were mostly holed up in their offices and cubicles, swamped with cases or arranging meetings with current and possible clients alike. Mr. Litt wasn't even around strutting down the halls of the floor, so she didn't have someone to secretly laugh at. Donna hadn't even been by to share the latest office news and gossip. Nancy was woefully, irritatingly, horrendously bored.
In the two months that she'd been there as a receptionist, this was the first time she had been so bored. She debated on taking a break just like Karla (the other receptionist) had done about half an hour ago. But she couldn't leave the front desk unmanned. That would lead to a one-way ticket into the unemployment line, and Pearson Hardman offered good benefits to their employees, even the maintenance staff. So, she decided to just grin and bear it. She could probably just play a game on her phone to pass the time, or text Johnny (her boyfriend) if he had any plans for dinner—
The ding of the elevator arriving at the firm's floor usually wouldn't have caught her attention as it was such a mundane occurrence. However, the clack of heels against the marble-tiled floors echoed from the office foyer and into the unusual stillness of the front office. Nancy looked up from her phone and scrutinized the new arrival.
The woman was too casually dressed (A tasteful lavender cashmere sweater tucked loosely into white palazzo pants.) to be another lawyer, and she didn't recall any of the offices informing them beforehand of any meetings with other firms and opposing counsels. However, the shoes (Oh my goodness those were the new season Christian Louboutin peep toes!) and bag (That was a Hermes tote bag! Nancy would have fawned over it had it not been inappropriate to do so.) told her this wasn't just a mistaken passerby. It was probably safe for her to assume this was a client.
Nancy fixed her stance and subtly smoothed down the front of her shirt, preparing herself for the client's approach— only to be caught off guard when the woman breezed past reception without a hint of a glance at her, and made her way straight down the hall that led to the partners' offices. She stood there frozen for a moment before her brain eventually caught up with the sudden blindsiding and she ran after the lady.
"Ma'am?" Nancy called out, trying to catch up as best she could in her own heels. "Ma'am excuse me, but do you have an appointment?"
The woman stopped in her tracks before whipping around, her dark whiskey locks swinging behind her in a haphazard ponytail. Nancy wanted to squirm under the hazel eyes that squinted at her but she kept steady, prepared to handle the situation should the woman be here to cause trouble.
She watched the lady's lips quirk slightly in what seemed to be amusement, which Nancy did not understand. What in the world could possibly amusing about this?
"You're new here." It was stated as a fact, not an assumption; leading Nancy to wonder if this woman really was a client and was already familiar with the staff and offices. But still, she couldn't just let her walk around without confirming an appointment. "Agatha's left? When?"
"Two months ago." Nancy answered before shaking her head and getting to the point. "I'm sorry but do you have an appointment? I can't let you continue unless you do."
The woman was interrupted from answering when a voice exclaimed from behind them. "Ms. Bonner?"
The two ladies turned to the speaker and Nancy could have sighed in relief when she saw Karla striding towards them. Clearly, she was familiar with this Ms. Bonner and was more prepared to handle the situation.
"Hi Karla. How's the hubby?" Ms. Bonner greeted warmly, accepting the cheek kisses from the other receptionist. "Did he get the promotion?"
"He did! We're so excited about it." Karla gushed. She sent a quick glance at Nancy which made the younger girl wince. She had done something wrong. She just knew it. Well here comes her ticket to the unemployment line. "Is there a problem here? Nancy?"
"I uh—I—"
But Nancy was saved when Ms. Bonner herself decided to intervene. "There's no problem at all. Nancy here was just asking if I had an appointment."
"Oh!" Karla laughed, turning to the younger woman now who felt she could finally breathe. She wouldn't get fired. "I forgot Ms. Bonner was on her trip when you started here. Don't worry she doesn't need an appointment so if she ever comes just let her through. We all do."
Nancy nodded and looked towards her savior who was now looking down at her phone. "I'm sorry girls, I'd love to stay and chat but I should go and see the big man now." With a wink at Nancy, Ms. Bonner sauntered towards the partners' offices.
The two receptionists made their way back to the front desk, it shouldn't have been left empty and it was just sheer luck that no one had arrived after Ms. Bonner.
"Who is she exactly?" Nancy asked after a moment of collecting her thoughts. "Ms. Bonner? Is she one of the partners' wife?"
Karla blinked at her junior and she pressed her lips together as if fighting back a laugh. "You could say that."
"Whose? Mr. Litt?"
"Oh goodness no!" Karla burst into giggles, wiping away a tear of mirth. "She's Mr. Specter's."
"His wife?!" Nancy gaped in disbelief. She didn't think that the firm heartthrob was actually in a committed relationship; after all, anyone who's worked there for even a week would immediately be filled in with stories of his brief trysts and his declaration of being married to his job. The staff and associates were gossips and they fed vicariously on the drama of the higher ups. "He's married?"
"Well not really." The older woman sighed, finally getting over her fit of laughter. "They're not in a relationship."
"But you said she's Mr. Specter's!"
"Yes, and Mr. Specter is also Ms. Bonner's."
"But they're not together?" Nancy was going to get a headache from this. Why couldn't her senior just give her a straight answer and have mercy on her poor brain. "Friends with benefits?"
"They are but not in the way you're thinking of." Karla said, turning to wake her computer from its sleep. "It's a long and complicated story."
"Tell me." Nancy almost whined, wanting to know everything now. She'd been bored all day and now she had a possible source of entertainment, she would latch onto it. "Please tell me."
Before Karla could regale the tale of the mysterious Ms. Bonner, the elevator dinged and a group of suits entered, approaching the front desk immediately. Nancy could only stand there and smile politely at the visitors, but inwardly she was sulking. It seemed it would take a while before she would hear the story of Harvey Specter and Ms. Bonner.
