Chapter 1: Becky's Depression

(Vidia's POV)

It's been an entire season's change since Becky and I got married. But something's been off about her lately. She doesn't smile as much anymore.

I'm worried.

But I'm not the only one who notices. Our friends have noticed it, too.

"Sugar, are you alright?" Rosetta asks one night in the tearoom.

"Huh? Oh, I'm fine, Ro."

"What's wrong?" Tink asks.

"Nothing's wrong, Tink. I'm just having an off day. That's all."

Tink moves to say more, but I stop her.

"I wouldn't push it, Tink."

"If you say so, Vidia."

Becky leaves, letting out a hard sigh. I follow her from a distance.

"I know you're there, Vid."

"I'm sorry, hon. I'm just worried."

"I'm sorry I've been so distant and whatnot."

"Any particular reason that you're willing to tell me?"

Becky and I sit on a branch in a tree near our house.

"I just…I feel like I have to be the perfect wife, since you're the perfect fast-flyer."

"Oh, honey. You don't have to be the perfect anything. And I'm far from perfect. I may have the speed I need to do my job, but that doesn't mean I'm perfect. I make mistakes, just like everyone else. No one's perfect, babe. We all just have to do our best, and if our best isn't good enough for someone, then they're not right for us. I would never ask you to be perfect, Becky. You've been through a lot, and asking you to be perfect is like asking the second star to the right to stop shining. It's just not possible."

Becky looks at me with tears in her eyes.

"Thank you, Vidia. That makes me feel so much better."

"You're welcome."
