The things I do for love...
Courage sat quietly in the corner with his head down. He sat in the same spot every day for the passed two months. He was in such deep thought, he began to lose touch with reality. But he didn't care anymore. Reality withheld too much perpetual sorrow. The depression had eaten him alive. Literally. The extensive stress had made much of his hair fall out. The skin in a lot of places on and around his waist had been eaten away almost entirely from biting. Courage's body forever shook and trembled from the chronic panic attacks and nightmares he endured. And his eyes...they had seen too much for an innocent pup like himself.
Nothing felt right anymore. Along with being afraid of the dark, he had become afraid of the light too. Everything around Courage now looked hazy. Shadows appeared from the corner of Courage's eyes. Strange laughter and sputtering whispers filled Courage's ears. He was no longer safe no matter the time of day or night.
Courage was now very alone having no one to run to anymore. Every time he tried getting Muriel's attention, she never gave a waking glance. She sat still as could be in her rocking chair, never rocking it. Holding her hands together across her belly staring into blankness, she had become skinny from lack of eating. And she stopped breathing after awhile. Courage supposed that she was just too depressed to breathe.
Courage even tried running to Eustace a few times. But he had been too busy with the rope around his neck he used to fly. A few times before, he couldn't manage. But finally was able to the month before. And he hadn't spoken to Courage since his success.
So hungry...
Since his owners' neglecting to feed him, Courage found other ways to sustain himself. He helped himself to all the food in the kitchen. (Eustace nor Muriel seemed to be eating any of it, so...) But he had eaten everything. And he was very hungry.
Too afraid to go beyond the boundaries of the farm, Courage walked up to Muriel with knife in his trembling paw.
Um...I don't want to sound like a beggar...But you haven't gone to get food in awhile. So...
He put the knife to Muriels arm.
Would it be okay if I...
Muriel didn't say a word.
Well, I'm awfully hungry...So, if this hurts at any point, I'm sorry. Okay?
Still no word from his dear owner.
Courage cut into her flesh, then stopped and he looked up at her. She held the same facial expression as always. He continued to cut deeper now. The knife stopped at the bone unable to go any further. An idea came to mind.
This might hurt a bit...
With a heavy bending force, the bone shattered and her arm snapped completely off. He proceeded to leap into her lap as he used to, and feast upon the arm with great joy. It tasted so good...
When the arm was gone, Courage wasn't full. He wanted more. But refused to take anymore from Muriel, for she needed her other arm for picking things up and her legs to walk. So, with great pleasure, Courage bounded up the stairs to his secondary owner, Eustace. He was still flying from the ceiling fan.
Hey there, Farmer. I know we have never been on the best of terms. But I'm very hungry. Would you do me the honour and allow me to feast on your flesh?
Courage imagined in his head Eustace nodding. Then grabbed hold of his leg with his teeth and bit down with great force. In a matter of a few minutes, he ate to the bone and licked the blood off it greedily.
I never knew human tasted so good. If I'd known that, I would have eaten you guys a long time ago!
Courage laughed.
