Prompt 935 [Title] In Denial

"Tonks?" Remus asked. She was sitting in Grimmauld Place, staring at her glass of wine. Something seemed off about his wife, and he wasn't sure how to approach the subject. "Are you okay?" She sat swirling the glass, but didn't reply for a while. Her eyes met his, and she placed the glass down on the table again.

"I think—" she started, but stopped. "My magic has been acting strangely, I don't know if you noticed," she added slowly.

Remus nodded, reaching for her hand to comfort her. Her abilities had seemed rather off to him, but perhaps it was all the stress the couple were under? Working for the Order of the Phoenix tends to have that effect on people, not to mention the fact that they were in the middle of a war against an evil wizard as well.

"I'm late," she said eventually, and an uncomfortable feeling charged the air.

"But, you can't be—" Remus said, he couldn't even say it. If she was pregnant- he wasn't sure what they would do.

"I know, it doesn't make sense, we did everything right," she muttered softly. Remus blushed, even now; talking about being intimate was something that was foreign to him. He had waited so long until their wedding night, and those nights afterwards…

"How late?" he managed to ask after taking a large sip of his own wine.

"It might still be a fluke; we can wait a few more days."

A few days later, the two of them needed to face facts; it was time to do a pregnancy test. Tonks popped out of Grimmauld Place and was gone for a while. Remus was pacing the kitchen, getting on the nerves of Kreacher, he was muttering about inconsiderate Mudblood-lovers.

"Kreacher, that's rude," Harry said. He was sitting at the table. He didn't know about the couples problems, but he could see something was amiss. Remus wasn't talking much, and he was acting rather jumpy, even for a man in a war.

When Tonks returned, she gave Remus a look, and they left Harry alone in the kitchen. Tonks swallowed heavily, taking the small vial of purple liquid from her robes.

"Is that it?" Remus asked curiously. "How does it work?"

"I drink it, and then I say the incantation on this sheet," she said, holding out a small piece of paper with the instructions.

"And then?" Remus asked nervously.

"We wait for the colour of the light that shines on my stomach," she said, eyes on the instructions. "Well, here goes nothing." She swallowed the small vial of purple liquid nervously, and Remus felt like he was going to faint. He was holding onto the wall in the bedroom for support.

"So, if it turns red, we aren't pregnant," she explained, pointing her wand towards her stomach and muttering the charm. "And green we are."

Remus nodded mechanically. It felt like his body had turned to lead. They waited a few minutes before anything happened. Then, the light shone green over Tonk's stomach.

"Oh bugger," she whispered, and when she heard a thud, her eyes left her stomach to find her husband passed out on the floor. She used her wand to send a jet of water at his face, and he came too.

"Sorry," Remus said sheepishly. She bent down to give him a hand up, and they sat down on the bed together.

"We did everything we could, Remus," she said. "We tried to prevent this, but this baby clearly wants to be born." She touched her stomach softly. "I wonder if he will take after you."

Remus's face went the colour of chalk. "Oh no, the baby could be…" he couldn't even say it.

"We will love this child, no matter what," Tonks said.

"Honestly, we never even talked about this, Tonks," Remus said seriously, his eyes alight with emotion.

"Well, we can talk now," Tonks suggested softly. Remus didn't know what was going to happen, but one thing was clear, they would get through it together.
