"Words sometimes play a part in the turnabout of things." A saying believed by the hopeful.
"Words can't ever touch a locked decision." A saying believed by the hopeless.
Unfortunately, neither of them is wrong and neither of them is right.
Using the friction from her long, then-white sleeves damp with blood and rainwater, she cocked her gun with her right arm.
"You know, I have two bullets left," Aoko said, lifting his chin with her bleeding finger. "but I'll be kind enough to kill you with just one."
Kaito chuckled, almost too soft to hear with the storm raging around them. "I've known you for 20 whole years and never in my wildest dreams had I imagined that the person I'm trying to protect the most is actually my enemy all along."
"Kaitou Kid caused my mom's death. He stole mom's life away. Stole dad away. Stole Keiko away. Stole even you away. You became Kid because of your dad."
"We both sought justice for the death of our parents. And now we're killing each other because of them."
Aoko was silent for a second.
"Well, you're not going to change my mind. It's too late to have any regrets. Everything I've worked for would be for nothing if I wouldn't be the one to personally kill you."
Kaito smiled. "If I would have any regrets, it would be that I… should've spent more time with you in the 20 years that we've had."
"You still have the nerve to say such things. Since childhood, I've always hated your guts. Choose your last words wisely." She sneered and buried her gun on his temple.
Kaito shakily lifted his head. "I love you." A tear fell. "I love you," he repeated. "And I'm so sorry."
Her grip softened. "So be it. Goodbye, Kaito." With a blank stare and coldness in her tone, her voice was the final sound he heard. Her voice, saying his name.
He smiled one last time
And a single gunshot echoed through the night.
Optional ending
Thunders roared louder as Kaito's blood splattered all over. There he lied, lifeless and motionless in front of her. Her hands trembled.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, Kaito." She cried over and over like anyone could hear her.
"Goodbye, Kaito." The sound of a gun cocking could be heard one last time.
She uttered, almost like a whisper. "I love you too."
She dug the gun on her head and pulled the trigger just like that.
No life, no pain, and no words left unsaid.
