Chapter 1
It was still dark in the city that never sleeps and he was using the darkness to his advantage. It was allowing him to go unnoticed as he completed his task
It was Gal Garrisions first day as a detective and she wanted to be sure she was on time so she had set her alarm for an earlier wake-up. She crawled out off her bed, showered and dressed, nuked a Jimmy Dean sausage and cheese biscuit for breakfast, coupled it with a glass of orange juice, donned her jacket, clipped her 9mm pistol and Detective Shield to her belt, snatched her keys from their hook by the door and left her apartment.
Gal exited her building. Stepping onto the street she stopped to breathe in the crisp spring air before strolling over to where her yellow Volkswagon Beetle was parked. As she got closer she pressed the unlock button on her key fob and - KABOOM - her German engineered subcompact vehicle exploded and she was propelled backward onto the walkway by the force of it. She felt the back of her head make contact with the concrete and then everything went dark.
In the diner directly across the street from the explosion, sitting at a window table a man spewed out the drink of coffee he had just taken splattering it against the window in front of him. "What the hell," he muttered low enough so that he was the only one to hear. Someone was suppose to be in that car when he detonated the bomb. So what the hell happened, his hand wasn't anywhere near his detonator button. Suddenly he could hear sirens approaching, not wanting to be here when the cops started arriving he got up from his chair and walked out of the diner joining the masses that were accumulating and disappeared.
Detective Kate Beckett was just stepping out of the shower when her phone started ringing. Picking it up from the vanity she hit 'answer', giving her usual greeting "Beckett. Pausing to listen she responded with, "okay, be there in thirty." She instantly pressed two on her speed dial list. When the other party answered she said, "Car bomb Castle."
"Where?" He replied enthusiastically. Beckett rolled her eyes, gave him the address and he responded with an "I'll meet you there". He then donned his jacket, snatched his wallet and keys from the table by the door and exited the Loft.
Three vehicles pulled up to the crime scene at almost exactly the same time, one contained a female detective, another with two male detectives and the third, a cab delivering a writer with a carryout tray holding four coffees. "Good timing Castle," Esposito said as he removed two of the coffees from the tray handing one to his partner. "Thanks Castle," Ryan said tipping his cup in acknowledgement.
"Your latte Detective Beckett," Castle stated as he removed her grande, skimmed latte, two pumps sugar-free vanilla from the tray. "Thanks you Castle," she replied taking the cup from him her fingers lingering with his for a few extra moments.
"Morning Lanie," Beckett said greeting her favorite M.E. and best friend. "Whatta we got?"
"Morning Kate, Castle," She replied. " What we have is one dead female, two with multiple injuries from flying car parts, none appearing to be life threatening and one female detective with a concussion."
"Okay let's start with the explosion. Who did the car belong to?" Beckett asked walking over to where Esposito and Ryan were going through the car.
"That would be Gal Garrison," Ryan said looking through some papers he managed to pulled from the mangled glove compartment.
"She's the detective," Lanie shouted. "She was taken to Memorial Hospital."
Just then the CSU van pulled up. Beckett walked over to get with their lead technician, John Edison, letting him know the car belonged to a detective from the 10th Precinct, to make this a priority. Edison nodded his head in understanding asking if the detective was in the car at the time. Beckett told him fortunately no, she then pulled out her phone and called Captain Montgomery.
"Captain Montgomery," he said upon answering his phone. "Whats up Beckett," discovering whom it was that was calling. After she explained the situation to him he replied, "I'll take care of it." He then called his friend and captain of the 10th precinct Wilbur "Will" Marshall.
Rejoining her team Beckett instructed Ryan and Espo to start a canvass while her and Castle went to the hospital to check on Detective Garrison.
"You're awful quiet over there, Rick. What are you thinking?" Kate asked her partner and boyfriend as she was sneaking a quick glance at him. She could almost envision the wheels of his mind spinning by the look on his face.
"If the plan was to kill Gal through the use of a car bomb why wasn't she in the car when it exploded," he replied.
"Had to have gone off early."
"You want to explode a car bomb you do it one of three ways; a pressure switch usually placed under the seat, a switch wired to the ignition or remotely."
"Well we will know which it was once we get the report from CSU," she responded just as she pulled into the Memorial Hospital ER parking lot.
"My guess is remotely," Castle said getting out of the car walking around to where Beckett was waiting then grabbing and kissing her ever so sweetly. Pulling away he whispered, "I've been wanting to do that all morning."
"Well what took you so long?" She whispered back wrapping her arms around his neck pulling him to her giving him a kiss of her own.
