Chapter I

January 22nd 1536

Charles didn't know what to expect when he received notice of his oldest daughter's wish to return back to England after many years abroad as a lady in waiting. He'd tried to make her came back once he married Margaret, the king´s sister, but his stubborn daughter had refused, arguing that she would never leave the Archduchess Margaret unless she told her so. He thought after the old lady´s death, his daughter would had come back to him; he couldn´t had been more wrong because his daughter refused him once again when she was invited to be one of the Emperor´s wife ladies.

The woman who stepped out of the carriage didn't look like he anything he remembered of his daughter. Of course, he hadn't seen her since she was seven years old and he sent her with the Archduchess Margaret. But the woman looked older than she was supposed to be, with long blonde hair and bright green eyes; and his daughter had always looked like a small version of his former wife, with long dark locks and black eyes that had always reminded him of spilled ink. She looked his way and bowed slightly her head before walking to the stables.

"Your Grace..." A soft voice said with uncertainty. He turned to his right. He'd been so preoccupied with the blonde woman that he hadn't noticed the young woman dismounting the horse closest to the carriage and walked to him.

"Alice..." He whispered in awe. His beautiful daughter was no longer a child. In front of him stood a tall and slender young lady with hair as dark as the night, falling down her back, and the same eyes he remembered looking back at him with tears in them from the carriage who would take her far away from her family. She bowed deeply, looking at the ground

"Raise, please. No daughter of mine should bow to me" She raised. He took a step closer and before anyone could say anything else, he took her in his arms in the tightest embrace he had ever give.

"Papa..." She whimpered, letting the tears freely fall down her cheeks.

"Charles! What's the meaning of this?" A voice shouted, making the pair separated. Charles took his daughter's hand in his, not wanting to part from her completely, as he watched his closest friend, and King of England, Henry, walked towards them.

"Your Majesty" He bowed his head and watched as his daughter lower herself into a deep curtesy with an elegance that most ladies in the court lacked.

Henry had just walked out of his wife's chamber after another fight. Lately, it was all they were doing and he was starting to get tired of Anne's incessant tries to control every aspect of his life while still not giving him any sons. He missed Catherine's presence; maybe, in the last years, they had not been on the best terms but no matter what, Catherine had always known when to let him be and when to pushed him. Catherine understood the ways a queen should act within the kingdom and their king, and he'd thought Anne would learn it with time, but it seemed you couldn't teach an old dog new tricks.

He'd been in the gardens, the only place in the palace he'd always felt at peace, when he'd seen his friend practically throwing himself at a young woman. He'd never seen his friend being so impulsive and even though, Charles had always been gentle with the ladies, he couldn't stop himself from being worried about the girl. Charles was a strong man, and too much force in a hug could really hurt someone as small as the woman.

He watched as they separated and bowed to him. He took a moment to really look at the woman and his breath got stuck in his throat. She was beautiful, standing there in a white dress with silver details, she looked like an angel.

"Your majesty..." Charles said for the third time, trying to get the king's attention back to him and not on his daughter "I would like to introduce you to my daughter, my Alice"

That definitely brought Henry to reality. She had to be one of his friend's older daughters, and by the information he already had, she was the second oldest, the one who had refused to return to England after Charles had gotten married to his sister. For what his friend and his sister had told him, after the death of her mistress, they had tried to bring her back home but she'd been place under the protection of the Emperor's wife, and had declined once again their offer to return. His sister had met her one time, when she had travel to the Archduchess court before she had married Charles. Lady Alice had apparently been as sweet as candy and as stubborn as himself, and his sister had been delighted to know she'd been the daughter of his husband.

"It's definitely a pleasure to meet you, Lady Alice" He said, with a friendly smile on his face.

"I was actually on my way to request an audience with you, your majesty" Charles said, not giving his daughter a chance to answer, he knew the look on his king's eyes and didn't like it one bit. His daughter would not be one of Henry's conquests if he had something to say about it.

The king had not stopped staring her since he'd stopped her father's hug and it was making her uncomfortable. In the Emperor's court she'd had many men watching every step she took; however, the king's blue eyes had an intensity in them than all the men who had wanted her before didn't and it unsettled her.

He was handsome. She could understand why a lot of the ladies she'd met in the Emperor's court gossiped about him. With dark short hair and bright blue eyes and standing taller and fitter than most man she'd met before, he was definitely an attractive man. A married attractive man whose best friend was her own father and who she should not find as enticing as she did.

"What for?" Henry answered, still not taking his eyes off of the beautiful angel, who currently was looking at the ground and holding her father's hand as if her life depended on it.

"Since my daughter had arrived earlier than I expected. I was going to request to leave court for a fortnight to go home and introduced Alice to the rest of the children"

At her father's answer, she looked at him in excitement. She had never met her younger siblings and it was the only reason she regretted not coming home sooner. Her other two sister were already married and with children of their own, and wanted nothing to do with her since they both thought she should had come back when they did and when she refused to do it, they both had sent her letters claiming she was no longer considered family in their own families. However, her younger sisters, Eleanor and Frances, both had sent their own letters to her explaining that they would love to meet her in person but in case they couldn't, they would love to continued sending her letters. That's how she'd found about everything going on at home from a familiar point of view, because at court the rumours usually were exaggerated to please the more traditional members.

One of the main reasons why she requested to go back home was because what one of their letters had said. She had been informed by her little sister that she had a little brother, whose mother, her father's third wife, had died in childbirth. It was later confirmed by her father's letter. It was not the first time she had received a letter announcing the birth of a brother, and the next heir to her father's dukedom; however, the last times another letter had always followed declaring the death of said younger brothers. This time she didn't want to be a stranger to any of her younger siblings, she didn't want to regret never meeting her family, she didn't want to cry herself to sleep over a family member she'd never met and would never have a chance to meet.

Henry watched the girl with a smile of his own. He never thought that someone could light up as much just by the mere mention of sisters and a small baby, but it seemed he was proved wrong once again by a member of the Brandon family.

"Of course, my friend" He answered, looking slightly at Charles, who stood beside his daughter frowning at him "Take your daughter home, Charles. I'm sure your family will appreciate it"

Before her father could answer, she felt the powerful need to respond "Thank you, your majesty, you are most kind" She smiled softly at the king.

Henry was certain that the young girl was an angel, her soft sweet voice was enough evidence of it. She had an air around her that he hadn't seen since his own mother died, one that he'd been wanting to seen since he was of age to be married and none of his wives, lawful or not, had carried. Her easy smile was as innocent as the look on her eyes, which shined with the excitement and happiness of a child at the chance to finally meet her siblings. And the elegance of her stand was of the same quality as the one of the Dowager Princess Catherine; and that was most impressive in his books, given that Catherine had been trained since her birth to act that way and this young woman had been born way before her father had been named Duke of Suffolk, and therefore had never had much education of that kind.

"Family is very important, Lady Alice. I would never refuse such request as to the reunion of one" Henry said, with smile before continuing "Have you yet seen my beautiful gardens?" After her negative answer, he offered her his arm "If you would, please. I'm incredibly proud of them"

Hypocrite, Charles thought while he watched his beautiful daughter take a hold of his king's arm and star to walk away from him. He followed them carefully, he didn't trust Henry. He had clearly lied to his Alice in their very first meeting, about one of the most important things in life for her. He was in serious need to talk to his daughter in a very clear way about their king's recent actions toward his own family and about his obvious intentions with her. He wasn't exactly sure what his other daughter had told her about life in England in her absence but he wanted her to have enough knowledge to navigate life at Court without angering anyone or catching anyone's attention.

He was aware of his daughter's age and her desire to be married, but the very same Holy Roman Emperor had declared himself as one of her protectors, thanks to his daughter's service as the Empress favourite lady. And although Charles would be happy to accept an offer for her hand in marriage from a member of his king's court, he also knew the Emperor would never approve of any union that he didn't deem worthy; and given he'd offered some of his own family members to marry her, the Emperor's expectations were really high. If Henry started to bestow favouritism on her, Alice's marriage chances would lessen until they eventually disappeared, and the king could not afford more troubles against the Empire and its allies.

Henry walked with his best friend´s daughter, fully aware of Charles walking a few steps behind them with no intentions of leaving him alone with the lovely Alice. It seemed his friend did not trust him with her, which was fair because his thoughts about her were not exactly pure.

"Oh, what a beautiful flower!" Alice exclaimed, leaving the king behind as she walked closer to a bush with elegant purple and white flowers. She had never seen them before! "What kind of flowers are this, your majesty?" She asked, touching the petal of one of them delicately. "

"I´m not sure, my lady" He answered honestly, watching her with a smile that Charles had not seen since the king married Lady Catherine all those years ago.

"Those are Canterbury Bells, sweetheart" Charles answered as he stood beside his king. The childish light in his daughter´s eyes stopping his worry for a moment "The Dowager Princess Catherine had them planted here after a quick visit to one of his majesties states in Canterbury"

"They are really pretty" She commented, sending a thankful smile to her father.

Not as pretty as you, the king thought, not knowing the changes that such thought would bring to his and his kingdom´s life.
