A pale quarter moon glimmers in the dark night, casting rays of light down into a clearing made of rocks. Things were silent that night, nooks and crannies where voles would scamper from lay dormant. The rocks themselves untouched.

Then the shadows began to move and sway, silent paws grazing over the grass blades. Rows of sharp teeth glittering in the moonlight, claws reflecting light that reached them. On either side of the rocks there was movement in the undergrowth.

And, as if on signal, the shadows broke and dark shapes hurried across at one another. And within a few minutes, the once dormant rocks were suddenly crawling with yowling, biting, fighting cats.

A dark grown Tom pinned a reddish brown tom, lifting his head up to glare down at his opponent. "Oakheart, what are you doing here! The Sunningrocks belong to ThunderClan!"

The reddish brown tom smirked underneath him. "After tonight Tigerclaw, these will be just another RiverClan hunting grounds."

"More RiverClan warriors incoming!"

Tigerclaw spun his head around just in time to see dark shapes emerge from the river, the RiverClan warriors wasted no time in hurtling themselves into the mix of cats without stopping to shake their pelts dry.

Tigerclaw intensified his grip on Oakheart. "You may swim like otters, but you and your clan have no claim here, this is our territory!"

A squeak turned Tigerclaw's attention away from his opponent, a pale brown she-cat was being held down by a RiverClan warrior. The cat's jaws were parted, still dripping from his swim, and ready to sink their teeth into the she-cat's neck.

The dark brown tom leaped off Oakheart and rushed to her aid. Knocking the cat off of her. "Run Mousefur, run!" He cried out to the cowering she-cat.

The She-cat got to her paws and Tigerclaw watched her take off, then his attention was bought back to the RiverClan warrior as his nose was sliced open. Blood blinded his view for a moment, but he didn't miss his mark when he sank his teeth into the cat's shoulder.

As his vision started to come to again, the dark warrior noticed a blurry black shape race out of camp, he had half a mind to call out the coward if he wasn't busy keeping the RiverClan tom held down. But regardless the tom got free and tore off.

"Tigerclaw!" The yowl came from a warrior with a tail as red as a fox. "This is useless, there are too many RiverClan warriors!"

"No Redtail, ThunderClan will never be beaten!" Tigerclaw called back, leaping to his side. "This is our territory, and we must never surrender it!" Blood was swelling from his broad black muzzle and he shook it clear.

"ThunderClan will honor your bravery, but we cannot afford to lose any more warriors." Redtail spoke, "Bluestar will never expect her warriors to fight against these impossible odds. We will get another chance to avenge this defeat." He met Tigerclaw's gaze steadily, 5hen reared back and sprang onto a boulder at the edge of the trees.

"Retreat ThunderClan, retreat!" At once his warriors struggled free. Spitting and snarling they backed towards Redtail. For a moment both sides remained still, the RiverClan warriors looked confused. Was this battle really won over that easily? Oakheart broke the silence with a triumphant yowl.

Redtail looked down at his warriors. With the Rick of his tail, he gave the signal. And the ThunderClan cat's dived down into the far side of the Sunningrocks and disappeared into the forest.

Tigerclaw followed last. He hesitated at the edge of the forest and glanced back at the bloodstained battlefield. His face grim. And his eyes furious slits. The he leaped after his clan into the silent forest.

In a deserted clearing, an old she-cat sat alone, staring up at the clear night sky. All around her in the shadows she could hear the breathing and stirrings of sleeping cats.

A small tortoiseshell She-cat emerged from a dark corner. Her paw-steps quick and soundless.

The gray she-cat dipped her head in greeting. "How is mousefur?"

"Her wounds are deep Bluestar." The tortoiseshell she-cat answered. "But she is young and strong; she will heal quickly."

"And the others?"

"They will all recover too."

Bluestar sighed. "We are lucky to not have lost any of our warriors this time. You are a gifted medicine cat, Spottedleaf." She tilted her head again and looked at the stars. "I am deeply worried about tonight's defeat. ThunderClan hasn't been beaten in our own territory since I became leader." She murmured. "These are difficult times for our Clan. The season of new leaf is late, and there have been fewer kits. ThunderClan needs more warriors if it is to survive.

"But the year is only beginning," Spottedleaf pointed out calmly. "There will be more kits when green leaf comes."

The gray she-cat twitched her broad shoulders. "Perhaps. But training our young takes time. If ThunderClan is to defend its territory, it must have new warriors as soon as possible."

"Are you asking StarClan for answers?" Meowed Spottedleaf gently, following Bluestar's gaze and staring up at the swath of stars decorating the night sky.

"It is at times like these that we need the words of ancient warriors to help us. Has StarClan spoken with you?" Asked Bluestar.

"Not for some moons, Bluestar."

Suddenly a shooting star passed over the treetops. Spottedleaf's tail twitched, and the fur along her spine bristled.

Bluestar's ears pricked as she remained silent as Spottedleaf continued to gaze upwards.

After a few moments Spottedleaf lowered her head and turned to face Bluestar. "It was a message from StarClan." She murmured, eyes becoming distant and thoughtful. "Fire alone can save our Clan."

"Fire?" Bluestar echoed. "But Fire is feared by all the clans! How can it save us?"

Spottedleaf shook her head. "I do not know," she admitted. "But this is the message StarClan has chosen to share with me."

The ThunderClan leader fixed her clear blue eyes on the medicine cat. "You have never been wrong before Spottedleaf," She meowed. "If StarClan has spoken, then it must be so. Fire will save our clan."
