Nico really hated his life at the moment. He was racing through the streets of Manhattan, his face red from the wind chill and his leg felt like they were about to give out on him. His lungs ached but he knew if he stopped running, he would die.
Sluggish figures limped and crawled towards him, their rotting handing reaching out trying to grab him. Zombies. As if his life wasn't already so goddamn weird. He had attempted to try and control them at first, being creatures of the dead. Be that as it may, he was still only human, unlike his dad. He had limits and Nico had reached his. At this point, he was so close to fading into the shadows he couldn't even control on of their pinkies without dying. He had to get back to camp. He had to get to Will. And Hazel. Oh, gods, he hoped they were still okay. Oh, and the others too, he guessed.
Nico ran to the only place he knew in Manhattan, Jackson's place. Nico ran up the stairs to the apartment he knew Sally Jackson owned, a horde of zombies chasing after him. He decided he needed to take a gamble. He stopped running, only to turn around swiftly and kick the nearest zombie with all his might. The zombie wabbled down the stairs, the other zombies falling behind the first. Some would grab the zombie in front of them, a fragment of muscle memory from their time as a human, perhaps?
Nico knocked on the door to the family's apartment urgently. His fist stained the door as he knocked. "Shit, PERCY? ITS NICO!" Nico yelled out, his bleeding knuckles the least of his worries right now. The door clicked multiple times and he looked at his ex-crush with relief as the door slammed open.
"Nico," he breathed out, his face contorted in relief. "I was just about to grab my mortal family and leave, why are you here?"
"I was in the city when they broke out, and I used too much energy trying to stop them. I'll probably die if I try to use my powers again. Therefore, you were my only option."
"Wow, good to know how much you love me," Percy said jokingly. "I was battling a monster when they broke out. When I said that this day couldn't get any worse, that was a figure of speech. Why the fuck does the universe have to take everything so literally?"
Nico could tell how exhausted Percy was. He had bags under his eyes and large scratch marks on his arms. Way too large to be anything human.
"Then let's help each other out. We can make it to camp before nightfall that way."
"Wouldn't the borders keep out the rest of my family though?" Nico snorted.
"The border can change what it keeps out. In situations like this, it will be focussed on keeping out undead. As long as they are considered family by you, they should be able to get through." Percy seemed to consider this information for a moment
"Mom! We gotta go! My friend is joining us, but we'll have to dash to the car!"
