In Season 7's "Epilogue," Reid and Prentiss had told the team what they both saw during their few minutes of being dead from the hands of the unsubs who had killed them. After Reid and Prentiss arrested the unsub who was drowning his victims and trying to use CPR to revive them, on the flight home from California aboard the jet, JJ and Morgan had a talk about what to do with the knowledge of Prentiss and Reid"s information. Hotch was writing his end case report, Rossi was worrying about his ex, Carolyn, Prentiss was sitting alone sadly looking out of a window and JJ was sitting next to Morgan looking at Reid sitting alone reading a book.
JJ said, "Morgan, Emily told us that she experienced 'cold and darkness' while she was dead, and Spence experienced 'a warm light' while he was dead. That's a lot for me to process!"
"I know," said Morgan looking over at Prentiss. "When I found Prentiss lying there with that stake in her stomach from Doyle, I did everything that I could to keep her with us. But, hearing that she still died for a few minutes? And feeling 'cold and darkness?' I'm still processing all of it! And, I thought the kid had told me everything about Hankel, but telling us that feeling a 'warm light' thing? I don't know what to do with that."
"I do," said JJ. "Excuse me."
JJ got up and walked over to sit next to Reid. Morgan sat there watching them.
"Spence," said JJ. "Why didn't you ever tell us about this 'warm light' experience before?"
"Well," answered Reid. "The reason that I said when I did tell you guys, JJ. I still can't explain what I saw during that experience."
"Well," said JJ. "I'll tell you what I experienced back then. Survivor guilt!"
"But, JJ," said Reid. "That was Hankel's fault, not yours."
"I know that now, Spence," said JJ. "But, before we found you, I was practically punishing myself for our splitting up to catch Hankel. I wanted Morgan to yell at me, I deliberately watched the next murder video online against Penelope's protests, and we all were helplessly watching Hankel torturing you on the screens. When Gideon and Penelope told us that Hankel had killed you, it may have only been for a few minutes, but they were the longest few minutes I've ever had! I thought that I had lost my best friend for good! I was so relieved when he chose to revive you with CPR."
JJ smiles at Reid and hugs him tightly.
"What's this for?" asks Reid.
"I'm happy that you came back to us." smiles JJ.
Reid suddenly feels happy and he hugs JJ back tightly.
"Thank you, JJ," said Reid.
"But what about you, Spence?" asks JJ.
"What about me?" asks Reid.
""You came and cried on my shoulder for ten straight weeks thinking that Emily was dead," said JJ. "But, she's here now, alive and well. And she's just told us that she, too, was dead for a few minutes. How do you feel about that, Spence?"
JJ and Reid both look over at Prentiss sitting there alone.
"Excuse me," said Reid.
Reid walked over to Prentiss and sat down next to her. JJ and Morgan were watching them.
"Emily," said Reid. "Why didn't you tell us that you had coded in the ambulance before?"
"Reid," said Prentiss. "It's not an easy thing for me to talk about. I'm still emotionally recovering from the experience."
"Well," said Reid. "I'll tell you what I've experienced from it. Grief and doubt that whole seven months!"
"But, Reid, that was Doyle's fault, not yours." said Prentiss.
"I know that, now, Emily," said Reid. "But, before, I didn't. I was crying on JJ's shoulder for ten weeks in a row from losing you. I went to the shooting range for weeks picturing Doyle's face on every target that I was shooting at. Life at the BAU wasn't the same without you around. I told Hotch at grief counseling that if we couldn't even keep each other safe, then why were we even doing any of this?"
Prentiss felt powerfully guilty hearing all of this.
"Reid, I'm so sorry about all of that!" said Prentiss. "Are you mad at me again?"
"No," said Reid. "You were right. That was all Doyle's fault, not mine or yours! You went through all of that to protect his son from him. But now, hearing that you, too, had actually died for a few minutes at his hand?"
Reid hugged Prentiss tightly while silently crying on her shoulder.
"What's this for?" asks Prentiss.
"I'm happy that you came back to us!" answers Reid with his voice breaking.
Prentiss felt happy and she hugged Reid back tightly while silently crying on his shoulder, too.
"Thanks Reid," said Prentiss. "I...I'm happy that you came back to us, too!"
JJ and Morgan came over and sat down beside Prentiss and Reid. Prentiss hugged Morgan and Reid hugged JJ and then Morgan hugged Reid and JJ hugged Prentiss.
Reid narrates, "Cherish those who you have in your life,"
Prentiss continues narrating, "Because you never know when they won't be around anymore."
This story wasn't a romantic tale between Prentiss and Morgan or Reid and JJ. It was inspired from Morgan saying to Prentiss that there were a lot of things about her suddenly being back with the team that were not resolved. It was also inspired because of how Prentiss felt like after she came back from hiding out in London from Doyle. She was physically healed from being staked, but she was still very hurt inside from what she had experienced. The death of her six old friends and colleagues by Doyle's hands. The guilt of everybody outside of JJ and Hotch thinking that she was dead. And her feeling "dark and cold" the brief time that she was dead. Prentiss might have felt that none of the others knew what she was going through because they didn't die and come back. But, she forgot that both Reid and Garcia did die and come back, as Reid reminded her by telling everybody about his "warm light" experience. Reid telling Prentiss just how sad he was feeling when he thought that she was dead, and then showing her just how happy he was feeling knowing that she was still alive was something I think Prentiss really needed since her return to the BAU. I hope you enjoyed reading this little family moment!
