10 February 1998

Hannah wiped her clammy palms on her robes. The greenhouses were always warm, but today she was shivering and sweating at the same time. The Carrow twins' words replayed in her mind. If she didn't turn in Neville to them, then they would torture her little brother. Noah was only eleven. He wouldn't survive the… the… She didn't even want to think about it.

Tears sprung to her eyes. He was only eleven. They'd just lost their mum. She couldn't lose her little brother, too. She couldn't.

"Hannah? Hannah!"

With a start, she realized that Ernie was calling out her name. He stood across from her, the plant in between them. They were among the few Hufflepuffs left. Susan Bones had fled to the Room of Requirement after Amycus raped her. Of the Muggleborns, Justin Finch-Fletchley had switched to Ilvermorny; no one had heard from Robert Malone since June; and Sally-Anne Perks gave up magic after their second year.

As Ernie rounded the table, the belladonna swayed, trying to keep his attention. He ignored it and after a quick glance at Sprout, who was helping a group of Ravenclaws, he said in a low voice, "What's wrong?"

Hannah felt fresh tears leaking down her face. She pressed her lips together to keep a sob from escaping. "Everything," she whispered brokenly, wiping at her eyes.

"Okay, that was a dumb question," he admitted. "Er, is it something I can help with?"

What she wanted was for someone to hold her and tell her everything was going to be alright. Ernie couldn't do that, though, not when they were living every moment in fear.

Hannah wiped at her eyes again and then looked up at him, squaring her shoulders. She had to be strong for Noah.

"We're going to the Room of Requirement," she said in a low tone, and although Ernie's brows furrowed, he didn't press for more information. The Carrows had recruited Stephen Cornfoot as a spy by threatening his own family, and the Ravenclaw student was watching them closely.

Ernie figured it out for himself when they got back to the Hufflepuff dormitory. All of the first-years were whispering about Noah's disappearance. Several of the older students muttered curses after hearing the news.

"Nev will help you," said Esther Fortescue rather confidently. She was Neville's younger cousin through his mother. "We'll get you to the room, don't worry."

They hid in the kitchen until it was curfew. Then in groups of three they began to emerge and distract the Inquisitorial Squad, who patrolled the corridors at night. Hannah and Ernie waited until they received a signal from a helpful little house-elf named Dobby before darting up to the seventh floor.

Everyone in the hidden room rose to their feet when Hannah burst through the door.

"Noah," she gasped out. "Neville, please - they took Noah!"

His eyes widened as Susan rushed to comfort her. Ernie closed the door and explained what was going on since Hannah was too overcome with emotion. From within Susan's arms, she watched them plan how they were going to rescue Noah. They refused to allow her to help because she was too emotionally distraught.

The strategy didn't work out exactly as they'd hoped. Michael Corner was caught in the process, but Noah made it to safety with Neville's help. Hannah's little brother made a face when she kissed Neville's cheek in gratitude. Blushing, she ushered her brother toward Dobby, who'd brought hot chocolate for them, and so she missed Neville's surprised but pleased expression.

12 December 2008

The loss of a child wasn't an experience Neville would wish on anyone. He felt helpless in comforting his wife, who blamed herself for the miscarriage. Some days she focused on her failure - as she dubbed it - and other days she avoided talking about Angel at all.

They'd already made the nursery even though the baby wasn't due until March. Neville stood inside there now, looking at the murals Luna had painted on the walls. The ceiling was a soft blue with angel wings peeking out from behind fluffy clouds. He wondered if she'd known what would happen, but then he dismissed the idea. Despite what people thought, Luna wasn't clairvoyant; she was just abnormally astute.

Hannah found him soon afterward. For a long moment, they stared at the ceiling. Then Neville looked at his wife and she looked at him, and somehow they ended up on the floor, crying once more.

"Why us?" she sobbed.

"I don't know," was all Neville could say.

After the miscarriage, Neville retired from the Aurors and became the Professor of Herbology at Hogwarts. Hannah handed over The Leaky Cauldron to another person and began attending the Healing Academy. After three years of schooling, she apprenticed to Madam Pomfrey, and later became the Matron of Hogwarts after the elderly woman retired. If Hannah and Neville couldn't have their own children, then they would ensure their students and patients had a bright future.

Hannah's second pregnancy came as a surprise. She waited another three weeks before telling Neville. Both of them were cautious and scared, but this time, there were no complications with the pregnancy. The delivery was difficult only because Hannah was determined to fix James Potter's broken arm first. By the time she was done, two hours had passed and she'd entered active labor.

"Out you go, lad," Neville said, ushering the frightened student out of the room.

The labor was extremely short and the midwife barely arrived in time to help them. Neville held his wife's hand as she recited each step of the process to reassure both of them. Three hours after the first contraction, Hannah and Neville were looking down at their beautiful, healthy baby girl.

Alyssa Valerie Longbottom was her name, after both of her grandmothers. She grew up to be a brave, loyal Gryffindor.
