Author's Note: So I am a huge Once Chicago fan and watch all 3 shows. I am playing with this idea of Jay and Will having a younger sister, and jay saving her from a very abusive boyfriend. In my world Rhodes never left, and Jay is probably going to be with Upton.
Disclaimer: I don't own Chicago PD, MED, or Fire, I just borrow their characters and set them in a world I like better than our current one!
Liz Halstead picked up her phone when she heard it buzz on her desk during planning, glancing down she noticed a new group text from her brother Jay, asking both her and her oldest brother Will if they could all have dinner this week. Liz smiled, she loved spending time with her big brothers and admittedly it didn't happen enough, even though she had moved back to Chicago after attending school in the south so she could be closer to them. She took only a second before responding that yes, she would love to have dinner with her brothers this week and mentioned she would check what night she and Ryan her boyfriend were free. Jay looked back at his phone has it beeped; glad Liz was willing to come but not at all happy she wanted to bring Ryan with her. Jay didn't like the guy and if the truth were to be told part of the point of this dinner was to talk to Liz about getting rid of Ryan, they had been dating for six months and over the last four months Jay had decided he liked him less and less.
Flashback
The real kicker for him had come a few weeks ago when he had met Jay and Will at Molly's and spent most of the time discussing how he felt Liz wasn't giving him enough attention but also how he thought she was as he put it starting to look a little chunky, we got to do something about that am I right boys? Jay had to resist the urge to hit his younger sister's boyfriend for being such a tool. Instead Jay responded with "I'm sorry, did you just say my sister who you claim to love looks chunky?" Ryan being a little drunker than was smart with Jay and Will around answered, "Yeah Man, your sister went to graduate school and got lazy." Now Jay was really unsure how he was supposed to stop himself from hitting this piece of shit or from causing a scene in Molly's." Will, I'm going to grab us a couple of drinks, why don't you explain to Ryan here why he wants to rethink what he said about our sister." Will looked at Jay and knew he had to put a stop to the situation that was going from bad to worse, while Ryan wasn't his favorite person either he was trying to chalk this rudeness up to him being a little wasted. "Ryan, man, listen if you know what's good for you the next ten things you say about my sister better be much nicer. I'm just telling you if you don't get yourself together Jay is going to lose it on you man."" Fine dude, I will only say nice things about your sister from now on but man you know as well as I do, she doesn't look like she did when I met her a few months ago."
Meanwhile, at the bar Jay was talking with Kelly and Adam, "Jay man how is getting to really know your sister's new boyfriend going?" Jay, looked at both his friends and just replied," I can tell you think I just thought I didn't like the guy before tonight, but after drinking with him for the past hour, I have to ask myself what my sister sees in him and how I can get them to break up"." He really that bad man?" Adam inquired of his friend and co-worker. "Adam dude, he basically just called my sister fat and Will wanted me to sit there and not say anything. I mean I know we had a seriously messed up childhood, but I have to ask myself how it became so bad that none of my siblings or myself can find anyone decent to be in a relationship with"
End of Flashback.
Jay knew he had to respond to Liz's text carefully, half the reason he and Will wanted to have dinner with Liz was to tell her how concerned they were about her relationship with Ryan. Hell, most of the time his little sister realized how awful a guy was and broke up with him before Will or Jay had to suggest it, but she was blind to this joker. Jay picked up the phone and shot back a quick text to his sister and Will, "Liz: I was thinking a little good old-fashioned Halstead sibling time. None of us will bring our significant others." Liz smiled as she looked at her phone, that was easy for Jay to say he was currently single and Will and Hannah Asher had not been dating that long but Ryan didn't like for Liz to go out without him even if it was just with the girls or her brothers. Liz frowned as she read the text, "Okay, let me see if Ryan is okay with me having dinner with you boys. If I can't do it this week then maybe next I mean Ryan is traveling for work next week so I would be free for sure, except for the nights I have class." Liz sent a quick text to Ryan: L: Hey babe, my brothers want to have dinner with me this week. Is that okay for you? I thought maybe Thursday since you would be packing and I have class Monday and Wednesday until late. Liz knew he had read her because her phone showed it and then the thought bubbles from his reply started to form. R: Seriously, Liz, I already don't see you at least 2 nights a week because you decided to go back to school, now you want to go to dinner with your brothers instead of helping me pack on Thursday or making me dinner, just one more way you want to choose someone else over me. If it isn't your brothers, it's your students or the study group you go to for Graduate School, I mean how much more selfish can you be? Do want you want. L: Ryan, don't be that way please, listen I can skip class tonight and I will come to your house tonight and cook and we can talk about it. Maybe I can wait until you leave on Friday for your business trip. R: Yeah, why don't you come over tonight and we can DISCUSS you and the Selfishness you have been displaying lately. L: Okay, I'll make salmon, its your favorite, I can leave here on time today so I'll go by the store and come by your place. I love you. Is 7 okay for dinner? R: 6 Liz, you know I like to eat early, I think we will have more time to talk that way. L: Yeah okay, I'll see you then, I love you. Liz picked up her phone and texted both of her brothers L: Hey guys, I'm not sure I can do anything this week until maybe Friday or Saturday, I need to talk to Ryan and see what works for him. I mean he will be gone this weekend but I might need to grocery shop for him before he gets back or you know clean his place. I will call you both tomorrow. Liz wiped the tears from her eyes and looked at the clock in her classroom, it was going to get her students from specials.
Jay's gut clenched when he read his sister's last text, Jay didn't like the tone and the bigger question was why did, Liz, have to talk to Ryan before she could go to dinner with, he and Will. It was obviously time to take this Ryan problem to the next level. Before Jay could process his thought Voight came out of his office, we on movement on the Seller's Case, Halstead you and Burgess go pick up our witness and come back here, Atwater you and Ruzek, go and pick up James Seller's, we are going to put him in a lineup. Jay knew he needed to keep his head in the case but he also knew that Kim and his sister had gotten close since Liz moved to Chicago, so he decided to share his concerns about Liz with her. "Hey Burgess, I wanted to ask you a question about Liz's boyfriend." Kim looked at Jay, "Ryan, yeah I've met him a few times at Molly's or when we have been getting ready to go to a girls night, Why?" Jay, looked at her and took a deep breath, tell me honestly Kim, how do you think he treats my sister. Kim, pondered how to answer the question to be true to both of her friends, she would be lying to Jay if she told him that she thought Ryan, treated Liz the way Jay or Will would want her treated, but at the same time she didn't want to tell him that Liz basically told her she was worried that Ryan might be getting a little controlling. Kim answered, "Jay, if I told you I wasn't worried about her relationship with Ryan, I would be lying to you, but I also don't think he has ever hurt her either." Jay swallowed thickly, that wasn't the answer he wanted to hear from Kim because it didn't calm him down. Jay picked up his phone and put in a call to Mouse, " Hey Man, What's Up?", Jay answered "Hey, do me a favor get me everything you can on Ryan Harralson, he's 28, works for a local tech firm, if you need a picture, check Liz's Facebook page, she posted one of them at a concert a couple of weeks ago, I want to know the last time this guy sneezed." Mouse started tapping away at his computer keys, "Jay, this is Liz's boyfriend isn't it, the one that told you and Will the other night, she was putting on weight?" "Yeah man, that's he guy." Mouse responded give me a couple of hours, I'll put a file together, digital and hardcopy." "Thanks, Man", Jay hung up with Mouse and stared ahead as they continued to their witness's house, Kim sat slightly uneasy in the passenger seat, "Jay, Liz is going to freak when she finds out you ran a background check on her boyfriend," Jay didn't answer but her knew Kim was right Liz was not going to be happy.
Liz Halstead, used her key to let her into Ryan's apartment building, she was struggling with opening the door since she had so many grocery bags in her hands when she heard a familiar voice, "Let me get that for you, Liz, right?" She turned to answer the man who had come to her rescue and came face to face with none other than Kelly Severride from firehouse 51, she smiled "Yeah, I'm Liz, I'm sorry I'm horrible with names but I know we have met at Molly's, your friends with my brother Jay." Kelly smiled "No worries, I'm Kelly Severide, I live in 4D, I didn't realize you lived here." Liz blushed " Oh, I don't my boyfriend Ryan, he's in 6B, I'm making him dinner tonight to make up we had a fight." "Why don't you let me help you with those bags, I hate to tell you but the elevator is out." Liz worried, Ryan was the jealous type and he would not like her letting the incredibly handsome and fit firefighter help her to his apartment with the groceries, "That's not necessary I mean you live 2 floors below him, it's out of your way." Kelly smiled as he grabbed a grocery bag and her school bag, I don't mind, besides, since your Jay's sister we are already friends by association." She relented besides it wasn't like Ryan would be home for at least another hour and half, Sure, thanks said Liz, thinking this would be a nice way to start her evening. Little did Liz know she was about to be so wrong.
