I hated doing this.
Acting as the irresponsible playboy Bruce Wayne.
However I knew it was a necessary mask for the mission I had to complete. Find out as much information I could about penguin licenses.
So as soon as he heard "Mr Wayne, Mr Pennyworth I'm so glad you could make it" he donned his billionaire masked and replied. "It's our pleasure."
I congratulated him on his new club while shaking his hand.
"We were just admiring your frozen mate" Alfred said referring to the block of ice in the centre of the club that contained a frozen Ed nygma. "Is he still alive in there?" I turned to Oswald curious on how he would react to this question. "I fear we may never know" he replied, the slight craze in his eyes making it clear that he didn't like talking about it. I mentally filed that away as a potential weakness, and internally smiled as he had without realising it admitted his intention to keep him frozen forever.
"But you'll know when you finally thaw him out, when they discover a cure for his disease?" I asked, making sure not to laugh at his face when he realised his mistake and listened as he quickly backtracked "Yes then of course."
Now as I had him right where I wanted him I decided to get onto the main reason that I was here.
"I wanted to personally thank you for everything you have done for this city." He smiles and thanked me. "So, can I ask about the licenses?" I asked. However when it was clear that he wouldn't talk about it out of fear that I was trying to implicate him I continued "if we had these three years ago my parents would still be alive."
And with that the Penguin fell into my trap as he began to divulge how his assistant was the one with the master list and all the details and he himself merely just handled the guidelines, pretty smart as it allowed him not to directly involve himself. With that he left no doubt to manage his club and I turned to Alfred. "Well done sir" he congratulated me and a small part of me felt good as he praised me, so after thanking him I began to make the plan.
"Now we know who had the list, the next step is..." I froze because there she was on the other side of the club. "Selina."
She looked beautiful as always stood there in her blue and and black dress, though it was most likely stolen it seemed as if it was made just for her, I watched as her curly hair practically had a life of its own jumping around as she constantly looked around appearing to be waiting or looking for someone.
I watched as Victor Zsasz and the redhead that seemed to constantly be around penguin walked up to her and felt on edge. However as it didn't seem like she was getting ready for a fight I assumed that it was them she came to meet, yet I carried on watching just to make sure nothing went wrong.
He was too far to hear what they were talking about but knew it must've been serious as Selina didn't seem happy at all, that was until Tabitha came and joined their conversation and after that it seemed that whatever the issue had been it was no longer a problem. Though he couldn't help but frown at the kind of people Selina accompanied herself with but he knew better than to ever say it to her as she wouldn't like the idea of him telling her to be careful of the people she associated with as she claimed to be one of those people, a criminal but her knew there was so much more to her.
He was brought out of his thoughts when he realised that they had all stopped talking and watched as she began to walk towards the group of people dancing, most likely to steal from them, until she saw him. She froze, the smile she had on her face from seeing Tabitha wipes away only to be replaced by a frown and a glare towards him.
He felt horrible as he watched her walk away, painfully aware of how bad he had hurt her with his words at the hospital and knew what he had to do. After a quick word to Alfred about getting him if any issues occurred while he was gone he began to make his way to the rooftop, absolutely certain that it was where she was headed, where she would feel most at peace and also where she would be waiting for him. Because he knew her very well which was how he knew she would go to the roof but she knew him just as well, knowing that he would follow her up there.
So after quickly clearing my mind I opened the door that would lead me to the rooftop and was met with the sight of Selina Kyle walking on the ledge dangerously close to the edge in high heels, she looked like she was in her element. They made eye contact and from her sigh of annoyance it was clear she still wasn't happy with him.
"What do you want, Bruce? She asked but it was clear she knew he would come and why he was here. "You knew I'd follow you, just like I knew you would come up here." She smiled at his words though he knew it was because she disagreed with him especially after what he had said last time they had talked. "You don't know anything about me" she countered them turned and continued on the ledge away from him. "I wanted to apologise for what I said at the hospital, when you came and visited Alfred." She stopped moving and just stood up there first looking down at me then turning to face Gotham. "You were making a kind gesture" I continued.
It was clear she was thinking about something as she stared out at Gotham, so I remained silent allowing her to get her thoughts. Not long after she turned back to me and said "You wanna talk to me, come up here"
Suddenly they were kids again. Back in his mansion next to the staircase. He was standing on the railing terrified and she was right in front of him, on the opposite side of the railing. She began to walk towards him and he did the same but while she looked graceful walking towards him l, he was the exact opposite walking slowly towards her listening to the advice she was giving him while trying to keep his balance. Then he did it and they just stood there for a few seconds staring at each other smiling at him finally being able to do it before he jumped down.
He had almost forgotten about that memory it was not only the day he had learned how to no longer fear heights but to instead enjoy it but also when he had begun to realise how he truly felt about Selina.
With that in mind he went to ledge and hoisted himself up so that he was standing on the ledge along with her. He looked out at Gotham, his city and couldn't help at how beautiful it was then he turned to Selina and couldn't help but think that the city was nothing in comparison to her. It was clear from her expression she hadn't expected him to join her up here.
He put his hands in his pockets and began to walk towards her until he was within arms length. "My point is, I'm sorry" I told her wondering if she would forgive me. "Yeah, you were a jerk" she said as she turned and began to slowly walk the other way, her legs slightly wobbling. He wondered if it was because she was getting very close to the edge of the ledge until he realised who it was he was thinking about, Selina had no reason to fear falling of this rooftop as she had been doing things like this since she was young, so was he the cause of the it?
"I saw you arrive with Tabitha Galavan." I revealed. She turned around again to face him. "I'm not sure I would choose her as a mentor" I advised. But it was clear she didn't like that as she told him "That means absolutely nothing to me" she told him and continued her slow walk towards the other side of the ledge.
He stood there and watched as she continued to walk away from him, the wind blowing through her hair and he couldn't help but wonder why couldn't they just be like every other kid their age. Go to school, sit around and have normal dates sadly he knew the moment he had watched his parents die that nothing about his life would be normal ever again.
When she got closer to the edge than he would've liked he couldn't help but try and get her to at least be careful even if he knew their was really nothing to fear. "Selina?" he begun, and she turned toward him and smiled most likely knowing what he wanted to say. "Oh" she teased as she hovered her foot over the side of the building daring him to comment even if it was about her safety. He took a few steps forward. "You...You wanna say something" she asked still hovering her foot over the edge.
He sighed, fully aware of what she was doing and took another few steps forward until he was in arms length again. "It's a lovely dress you're wearing tonight" he told her, knowing not to fall for her trap. It seemed that it was the right thing to do if the smile on her face was anything to go by.
He took another few steps forward until he was right in front of her, they stared at each other in the eyes and he could practically feel her breath on his face as it provided a much needed warmth against the cool breeze around them.
It was so quiet it seemed as if Gotham itself was holding it's breath waiting to see exactly what would happen between the two. He watched as her eyes flickered between his eyes and his lips and he knew that she saw he was doing the very same to her. They leaned in and stopped just short of their lips touching.
He wanted so badly to kiss her but he knew it was a challenge, they both clearly wanted to, however neither wanted to be the one to initiate it. He knew she didn't want to initiate it because while he apologised she hadn't completely forgiven him and so wanted to stand her ground against him. He knew if he kissed she would either kiss him back or would just hit him, though knowing her it would likely be both, the former then the latter.
Just as he was prepared to take the risk and find out he heard "Honestly you two, why can't you go to the cinema like normal teenagers." Alfred said as he walked over and looked up at us. I sighed at the interruption before turning to face Alfred knowing he wouldn't have come to find me unless he had a reason.
"Master Bruce, we have a bit of a situation downstairs" and with that it I knew it was no longer the time for messing around because I had work to do. I jumped down from the ledge and turned to face Selina "sorry Selina I have to go, goodbye" I apologised before quickly making my way back downstairs to the club, and due to how quickly I left I missed what Selina had said.
"Goodbye, Bruce"
