No one dared to lift their eyes from their hands, firmly grasped and resting on the long black wood table.
There was a tense silence that seemed to lay over them like a thick blanket, desperately trying to block out the screams and cries of their children who all grasped their own flesh too, a lot more wildly though.
Half the line had been marked so far... Cowering and balling their fists in their mouths to keep their screams muffled. Slowly I could see their flesh rip itself apart and form into the dark mark, over and over again until their blood clotted blacker and blacker, creating the 'ink' of their mark.
Now it was my turn.
I glanced to my father who was facing the marking area from the table and although his eyes held sympathy for what I was about to endure, I could feel his pride radiating.
He had always wanted this. For me to follow in his footsteps and become a loyal servant of darkness and pureblood supremacy.
He had sworn it was my mother's dying wish too. She had wanted it for herself but was too sick to fight.
His pride and the strange feeling my mother was watching with pride from somewhere I couldn't see filled me with confidence as I rolled up my long black button up sleeve.
There was two other girls getting marked today and they looked so beautiful in their fancy black dresses.
I had been jealous and felt too tomboyish in the suit my father had told me to wear... But now that I could see the others writhing around on the floor I was glad of the dignity I would keep from not worrying about keeping my dress down...
As I eyed the girls attire, I could see Draco rolling his sleeve up behind me too. He shared the same fear and excitement as I did, I could just see it in his eyes.
We shared a small reassuring smile as I took a step towards the small platform.
My smile came to a harsh halt as a long white hand gripped my wrist and the voice connected to it commanded me to kneel.
I lowered myself to a bow, placing one knee on the ground and the other behind me to keep me balanced.
I had never seen the Dark Lord until today and he was definitely not what I was expecting.
He still evoked the same fear and authority as I had imagined, but for him to be so... Inhuman?
It made him otherworldy.
A king come from another dimension to lead us into a glorious battle for a clean world...
"Are you prepared to become my servant? Be at my call and live to fulfil the cause? To die?" His vice like grip on my wrist pinched and I took a deep breath.
With a slow exhale, I lifted my head to lock eyes with our Dark Lord and give a firm resolved nod.
"I am, my lord. Until my death."
