Disclaimer: I do not own One Tree Hill or any of the characters. This story is going to be a little bit of everything, it starts with a Nathan sickfic because we are seriously lacking in those fanfics so if you have emetophobia you may wanna skip some parts of this first chapter but it is nothing graphic. This story mainly follows Nathan and Haley through Haley's pregnancy and high school and all the challenges that come from that. It is mainly similar to the show with some minor changes (like Keith's shop is still in his name and now run by Lucas after Keith's death). Anyways, please enjoy and let me know what you think!
It was three in the morning when Nathan woke up. He was dripping sweat but he was shivering. Nathan looked over at Haley but she was sound asleep and he couldn't wake her. She works so hard at school and the café and she means everything to him. He'd be fine. He was just a little nauseous. Ok very nauseous, bathroom, NOW. Nathan sprinted at his top speed to the garbage near the closet. Well honestly, he was trying to get to the toilet but had determined that wasn't going to work out. Despite his best efforts, he discovered it was impossible to throw up quietly.
"Nathan?" Haley asked half asleep.
Nathan coughed, "Sorry Hales, I didn't want to wake you." Haley couldn't care less about being woken up.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah," Nathan gagged. "Go back to sleep."
"No, Nathan… did you throw up, honey?" Nathan responded by throwing up again. He didn't want to, but he began to cry a little. His entire body was sore and his throat burned and he just wanted to be asleep. Haley got down on the floor and hugged him. She held onto him until he calmed down and he was nearly asleep when he began to cough violently.
"Hales?" He squirmed as she continued to hold him. "Hales, I love you. I really do. But I don't want to cough all over you." She let go as he broke out into a coughing fit that lasted until his face was red and he gagged again but the contents of his stomach were gone.
"Nathan, I'm going to help you to the bathroom so we can get you cleaned up but you're a lot taller than me and I'm going to need your help." Nathan nodded absent mindedly. Haley allowed herself to be a crutch for Nathan until they reached the bathroom. He brushed his teeth and she got him a clean t-shirt to change into before they both went back to bed.
Nathan was out in a matter of seconds but Haley hesitated, she wanted to watch over him all night but she knew it was going to be a long couple days until Nathan felt better.
Nathan woke up the next morning hoping it was all a dream but the pounding in his head told him it was real. Great. "Heyyy sleepyhead, feel any better?" Haley spoke softly. Nathan groaned and rolled over, as much as he loved his beautiful wife, he was not up to conversation. "I'll take that as a 'no'," Haley said with a soft giggle before going to get a thermometer. She put it in Nathan's ear because she knew if she used the kind of thermometer that went in your mouth he'd complain to no end.
"102.6, that's pretty high Nathan, I think I should make a doctors appointment."
"No. Not yet, okay?" He paused to cough, "I promise if it goes up at all I'll let you but I don't want to bother anyone, I'm fine." Haley sighed but nodded. He was so stubborn!
"Fine, just take some medicine and eat some of this toast," Haley handed him a plate and a glass of water.
"That's not looking like a great idea, Hales."
"Meaning?"
"Meaning if I eat that, I don't think it's staying down."
"You have to eat something,"
"Not now," Nathan jumped up from the bed and ran to the bathroom. He kneeled in front of the toilet coughing and gagging. When he stopped he lay down on the floor and fell asleep on the cold tile. Shit, Haley thought, I think my period just started I need to get in there. I can't wake him up. Okay, it's fine, I can put a tampon in anywhere, I'll just grab one. She quietly tip toed into the bathroom and snuck into the bedroom.
What? Her period hadn't started. That's weird it was supposed to start… she checked her calendar, 3 WEEKS AGO? Shoot, she didn't realize it had been that long. She picked up her phone, "Hey Lucas, listen I need you to come pick me up and bring me to get something. No questions asked."
"Haley, are you okay?" Lucas asked as she got into the passenger seat of his truck.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Haley smiled. At least she sure hoped she was fine. She hoped this wasn't going to be a life changing day. But at the same time part of her was excited for if it was.
"Is Nathan okay?"
"He's been better but he'll be okay," Lucas seemed to accept that answer. He drove Haley to the drug store upon her request. Haley picked up a pregnancy test but she figured she might as well grab some medicine for Nathan too, cough syrup and anti-nausea medication.
"Hey, can we go back to your house for a little? I don't…want to disturb Nathan," Haley pleaded quietly. Lucas looked at her questioning but nodded, his best friend would tell him what was wrong when she was ready. When they got to Lucas', Haley went to the bathroom.
This five minutes could not have gone any slower. Lucas was going to think she was sick or something and- oh my god. She couldn't believe it.
"Haley, are you okay? What took so long?" Lucas looked up when he heard Haley coming. She wiped a tear from her cheek. "Hey, hey, why are you crying? What happened?"
Haley smiled weakly, more tears falling, "I'm pregnant."
"Oh wow, Haley. Are you excited?"
"Yeah, yeah I am," Haley laughed wiping her tears, "I have to go talk to Nathan. I'll call you later, I love you, bye!" She ran out leaving Lucas standing there in shock and hoping that Nathan echoed her happiness when he heard the news.
Nathan heard the door and opened his eyes. Why was he laying on the floor? How long had he been out? "Haley?" He questioned.
"Hey, honey," She smiled, peaking her head into the bathroom. "Were you still sleeping here?"
Nathan nodded, "How long has it been?"
"About an hour and a half." Haley sighed. "Nathan, I have to tell you something. It's unexpected but I think it could be really exciting, I just hope you think so too." Nathan furrowed his eyebrows, what was she going to say? "Nathan, I took a pregnancy test and it was positive. It could have been a false positive but I just have a feeling it's not." Nathan leaned towards the toilet and threw up violently. Haley just stood there, wondering if this was his reaction to the news.
Nathan began coughing and the cleared his throat and looked back up at Haley, "Sorry," he said. "I swear, that was just because I'm sick. I mean, yeah, of course I'm shocked and scared but if anyone can do this it's us, Hales." Tears began to stream down Haley's face. "Wait, no, I didn't mean to upset you. What's wrong?" Haley dropped down to the floor and hugged him. She truly felt everything was going to be okay.
"Hales, I love you. I love our future baby. But that's why we need to keep you healthy. You should let go." Nathan began to cough again.
"Oh yeah, I got you some medicine!" Haley jumped up and came back with water and a lot of medication. "And before you even try saying otherwise, yes, you need it all." Nathan sighed, she knew him too well.
About fifteen minutes later the medicine was kicking in and Nathan felt confident he could leave the bathroom without making a mess of the apartment. "Hey, beautiful. Did you make a doctor's appointment to check on baby Scott yet?" Nathan asked as he watched Haley make dinner. He couldn't believe how late in the day it was.
"Yeah, I did," Haley smiled. "I have an appointment for tomorrow. I really wanted you to be there but-"
"I wouldn't miss it,"
"Nathan, you've been sleeping on our bathroom floor so you're already there when you need to throw up. You can't leave the house."
"Haley, I just took one dose of medicine and I'm already feeling better. By tomorrow, I'll be better enough to be there with you." Haley wanted to argue with him but she also didn't think she could do this without him.
"Okay," she agreed.
"Nate, wake up. My appointment is at 9:30, it's 8:45. I let you sleep as long as possible." Haley nudged her still feverish husband. Nathan coughed and rolled over. He felt like death but he wasn't going to miss this so Haley couldn't know. He'd just take more medicine and he'd be fine.
"Okay, I'll be ready in 10…15 the latest." Nathan said, half asleep. He grabbed clean clothes from his dresser and walked into the bathroom to shower and brush his teeth. Once he was dressed, he took more medicine and walked out. "Good morning, gorgeous," He smiled as he looked at Haley, quietly sipping her tea and read the newspaper. She smiled back at him.
"You ready?"
"Yeah, let's go." Nathan grabbed the keys to his car and he and Haley left their small apartment, heading to a life changing appointment.
Halfway through the drive,2 Nathan began to have a coughing fit and Haley was worried he was going to drive them into a tree. "Nathan, pull over for a minute." Nathan couldn't respond between coughs but listened. Once the car was stopped, Nathan caught his breath, took a sip of water and popped a cough drop in his mouth.
"Sorry, Hales, I didn't want to make us late," He muttered, ashamed that he couldn't control his stupid cough, as he turned back onto the road.
"Hey, it is not your fault for being sick, okay? And I'd much rather be a little late because we pulled over for a minute than us not get there because you crashed the car while distracted by practically losing a lung. Our next doctor's appointment is for you, by the way."
Nathan looked over at her, "What did I ever do to deserve you? You're the best thing I could have asked for, Haley." Haley's eyes began to get teary, the pregnancy hormones were already making he ridiculously emotional.
"I love you," She whispered, trying not to cry. Nathan grabbed her hand and they drove the rest of the way in silence. Just enjoying each other's company.
"Haley James Scott!" called the doctor.
"That's us, Nate." Haley smiled. Nathan was completely zoned out. "Nathan!" she tapped him. "Come on," the young couple walked up to the doctor.
"Hi, I'm Haley and this is my husband, Nathan." Haley said sweetly and Nathan reached out his hand to shake the doctor's.
"Nice to meet you both, I'm Dr. Spencer. Just follow me back and we will get settled into a room." As they walked back, Nathan began to cough again. "That is quite the cough you have, Mr. Scott. I'd encourage you to see a doctor if you haven't yet."
"Oh, I'll be fine. Just didn't want to miss Haley's appointment." Nathan reassured. Haley rolled her eyes. Only he could hear that he should get checked out from a doctor and still insist it wasn't necessary.
Dr. Spencer led them into Room 3 and instructed Haley to sit on the table. She also offered Nathan a seat, but he opted to stand next to Haley. Dr. Spencer examined the young couple, she saw teenagers from time to time but less often was the father there and she couldn't remember a time when kids this young had come in married. "So first I just want to get to know you and your situation a little bit,".
"Okay well, we are seniors at Tree Hill High School, we've been married for about a year now, we live in an apartment together not that far from school. Nathan is a basketball player, I'm a tutor. I work at Karen's Café and he works at Keith Scott's Body Shop and-"
"Hales, she doesn't need our whole life story she's got other patients today," Nathan laughed quietly, nudging his talkative wife.
"Right, sorry, I'm just nervous," Haley blushed. "Anyway, I took a pregnancy test yesterday and it was positive, so I made this appointment to confirm it and just check on everything I guess."
"Okay great, thank you. The two of you seem pretty settled, are you planning to keep the baby?"
"Yes." Nathan responded quickly. Haley smiled at how happy he was to be a father.
"Alright, now we are going to start by doing a pregnancy test here, just because home ones can sometimes be wrong although false positives are much rarer than false negatives." Dr. Spencer explained. "So, Haley we are just going to do a quick blood test and the result will be back in a few minutes,". Haley closed her eyes and squeezed Nathan's hand until she was done drawing blood. Then the doctor left, leaving Nathan and Haley alone to wait. Nathan's stomach was turning, and he honestly wasn't sure if it was illness or nerves.
"Hey, I'm just going to run to the bathroom really quick, okay? Don't find anything out until I'm back," He smiled, kiss her forehead. Haley nodded and he hurried out of the room. Nathan quickly looked around for a bathroom, trying not to draw too much attention to himself. Although it would draw more attention if he threw up in the middle of the hallway.
Finally, he found the door he was looking for and ran into one of the stalls, instantly falling onto the floor and losing the little breakfast he had time to eat this morning. Afterward he stood in front of the sink, trying to look presentable enough to go back.
"Son, it's okay to be worried," an older man stated, appearing behind him. "I'm sure you and your girlfriend will figure this out."
"Wife," Nathan muttered.
"What?"
"She's my wife. And I should really get back to her." With that Nathan left and hurried back to Haley's room. He didn't want to miss a thing.
When he got back, the doctor was already there, "Oh good, Nathan, you're back. Haley said she wanted to wait for you," Dr. Spencer smiled. She could tell Nathan had just gotten sick. She'd seen a lot of soon to be dads run to the bathroom and come back a little sweaty with a mint in their mouths. She just hoped Nathan was okay, he hadn't looked good the whole time they were here, but he also had that horrendous cough so hopefully it was just a little flu and didn't have to do with the news of his baby.
Haley pulled Nathan into a hug and then looked at the doctor, "So, what now?"
"Well, as I thought, you are in fact pregnant." She started. "Next, we will try to figure out how far along you are. When was your last period? Do the two of you have any idea when you may have conceived?"
"Um well my last period was 7 weeks ago. And I guess the first chance the baby could have been conceived was…" Haley looked at Nathan, she felt awkward telling the doctor about their sex life and Nathan could tell.
"About 5 days after that," Nathan stated, he'd never been one to care about anyone knowing. "Most recent possibility, 3 days ago but she wouldn't know already, would she?"
"No, probably not," Dr. Spencer hid her smirk. These two were adorable together, very different personalities though. "I'm going to guess you are probably about 5 weeks along, but we will have an even better estimate after the ultrasound."
At the end of the appointment, Nathan and Haley felt pretty good. They had gotten many of their questions answered and were excited to begin this journey together. Nathan, however, was also feeling the medicine he took begin to wear off. He began to cough more, concerning Haley and Dr. Spencer with how painful it sounded.
"Well, it was nice to meet the two of you and I look forward to seeing you again. Oh, and I'm sure you are ready to be out of the doctor's office but the is an urgent care in the office next door and I do recommend that you stop by Nathan." Dr. Spencer shook both their hands.
"Thank you, doctor." Haley smiled. Her and Nathan began to walk away but Dr. Spencer could still hear Haley as she said, "No arguments, okay? You're going, the doctor recommended it."
An hour and one pneumonia diagnosis later, the couple was back at home, Nathan setting up camp on the couch. "This is ridiculous, you're sick and should be in bed!" Haley groaned.
"Well, you're pregnant and should be in bed and healthy," Nathan insisted. Haley sighed, she knew he wasn't going to change his mind and honestly, why was she fighting to be the one sleeping on the couch when they had an amazing bed?
"Fine," she agreed. "Hey, do you want me to wait to tell our friends until you're back at school?"
"No, it's fine. Just tell Brooke and the whole school will know in minutes. Oh, but also tell her I have pneumonia so that spreads around school too and it doesn't look like I abandoned you and the baby," Haley laughed at him and kissed the top of his head.
"Okay. See you before I leave for school tomorrow?"
"Of course," Nathan replied as he watched her walk towards the bedroom. "And Hales, I love you."
"I love you too, Nathan. Always and forever."
