Princess Twilight Sparkle was working in her kingdom's library. She had been studying up on various subjects, which she thought would be useful for her princess duties. However, Twilight had been working longer and harder, than anybody expected her to. Although Twilight's mentor, Princess Celestia, admired what a good worker Twilight was, she was worried that Twilight would forget about everything else in her life, due to being so invested in her studies.
One morning, Fluttershy paid a visit to Twilight's kingdom, while wearing a blue robe. She shyly knocked on the door. At first nobody answered, so Fluttershy said, "Maybe I shouldn't of come here. Maybe I should just go."
Starlight Glimmer opened the door. Starlight looked calm and relaxed, while Fluttershy nervously smiled. Starlight said, "Hi, Fluttershy. What's going on?"
Fluttershy took a note out of her robe and said, "I had a few things, that I wanted to talk to Twilight about. However, I know she hasn't been talking to anybody, for the past couple of weeks. That's why I decided to write her a letter." She gave the letter to Starlight and asked, "Can you deliver that to Twilight?"
Starlight answered, "Of course."
Fluttershy replied, "Thank you."
A few hours, Spike came into Twilight's library. He looked around and saw Twilight sitting at her desk, while reading a very long book. He also noticed a large stack of books, that Twilight had been reading. There was over a hundred of them and Twilight had read every single one of them. Spike walked up to Twilight and tried to get her attention, by calling out her name. She didn't seem to notice, so he started singing. Twilight turned around and saw him. She placed a bookmark on the page she was reading and said, "Hi, Spike. What's up?"
Spike said, "You've barely visited your friends, all month."
Twilight replied, "I do miss them, but I've been busy. I've been preparing for my royal duties, so I can't focus on anything else."
Spike could hardly believe what Twilight just said. He said, "You're the Princess of Friendship! Ignoring your friends is the last thing you should be doing."
Twilight thought about what Spike said. She sighed and said, "I have been pretty ignorant, haven't I?"
Spike smirked, while replying, "Ignorance seems to be a big part of you."
Twilight gave Spike a disapproving look, before asking, "Have I missed anything important?"
Spike said, "Well, your friends had some things they wanted to do with you, but you told me to ignore all your messages, unless they were from Princess Celestia."
Twilight figured it was time she start taking more responsibility for her actions, so she stood up and said, "It's time I start listening to my friends. Spike, send in those messages. I want to read every single one of them."
Spike looked a little nervous, while asking, "All of them? You have a month of letters. Looking at all of them might be overwhelming."
Twilight confidently replied, "I'm not afraid. Send in the letters."
Spike responded, "Okay then."
Spike had to get some help from Starlight Glimmer, because there were so many letters. The two of them dragged in a couple of carts, which were filled with letters. Twilight looked shocked, while seeing how many letters she had received. She used to check her messages, daily. Seeing a month's worth of letters, at the same time, was a very odd sight. Twilight looked at the carts and nervously asked, "How many letters do I have to read?"
Starlight answered, "A couple hundred."
Twilight put her hoof on her face, while saying, "This is going to take a long time."
Starlight tried to make Twilight feel better, by replying, "I think you can save time, if you ignore the unimportant letters."
Twilight shook her head and responded, "I can't do that. I have to be respectful, by reading every letter that was sent to me."
Starlight smiled and asked, "Do you really want to read your junk mail?"
Twilight smiled back and replied, "I suppose I don't have to read those silly things." Twilight put her junk mail to the side, which greatly shortened the amount of letters she had to read.
Twilight grabbed a stack of letters and started reading through them. There were some she wish she hadn't read, like advertisements for the Flim and Flam's new business and letters from Trixie, that boasted about how great and powerful she thought she was. She got a letter from Applejack's brother, Big Macintosh, which just said, "Yup." and "Nope." It was the shortest letter she had ever read. A much longer letter came from Maud Pie. It was an overly-long and detailed history of every kind of rock, in all of Equestria. Twilight tried to read the whole thing, but it was super boring, so she gave up.
Twilight started reading letters, that came from her closest friends. Rainbow Dash's letter was asking Twilight if she wanted to fly through clouds with her. The letter was from four weeks ago. Twilight felt guilty, for taking so long to read the letter. Applejack's letter was asking Twilight if she'd help her get her farm ready, for a big party. The party was two weeks ago, so Twilight missed out on preparing for the party and attending it. Pinkie Pie sent a letter, that asked if Twilight would bake a cake with her. The letter was from a week ago and in the past week, Pinkie Pie had burnt over thirty cakes.
Twilight started banging her head against a textbook, while saying, "When my friends needed me, I ignored them and just read these silly books. I thought I was being responsible, but I was being the opposite of that. I was being a big dummy."
Starlight and Spike quickly noticed how upset Twilight was. Starlight said to Spike, "We gotta cheer that bookworm up."
Spike asked, "How are we supposed to do that?"
Starlight looked at Twilight's most recent letter, before saying, "I think I know how to help her." Starlight walked over to Twilight and asked, "How are you feeling?"
Twilight looked guilty, while saying, "I feel like the worst friend, in all of Equestria."
Starlight replied, "Well, don't give up on hope."
Twilight had an over-dramatic look on her face, while saying, "My friends will never want to hangout with me, ever again!"
Starlight replied, "Yeah right, Twilight. There's plenty of good things, that you can do with your friends. Sure, you missed a month with them, because you got distracted with your terribly uninteresting choice of books. Like, I have no idea why you read those books. They're incredibly bland." She paused and said, "Anyways, you might of missed out on some of your friends' activities, but you can still spend time with Fluttershy."
Twilight asked, "What do you mean?"
Starlight said, "Fluttershy's planning on going to Filthy Rich's party, that'll raise money for animals. Considering how much Fluttershy loves her pets, it's a party she couldn't resist, despite her shyness."
Twilight asked, "When's the party?"
Starlight said, "According to her letter, it's tomorrow. She wants to meet up with you, today, because she wants to make sure she wears the right dress."
Twilight jumped up and replied, "I'm not going to abandon my friend, when she needs me. I will save her!"
Starlight calmly said, "She just needs help picking out a dress. It's not that big of a deal."
Twilight screamed, "It's a huge deal!" Twilight stormed out of her castle and started running to Rarity's boutique, where Fluttershy had asked her to meet her at.
Meanwhile, Rarity was having Fluttershy try on a variety of dresses. Fluttershy just wanted to try a few on, but Rarity was obsessed with fashion, so she had Fluttershy try on a countless amount of dresses.
Eventually, Twilight walked inside the boutique and saw Fluttershy, who was wearing a vampire dress, that came with fake fangs. Twilight raised her eyebrows and said, "Oh, my."
Fluttershy replied, "Hi, Twilight. I didn't really think this dress was my kind of outfit, but Rarity insist I give it a try."
Rarity said, "I thought she might be into goth things. It's hard to tell what she likes, considering how shy she is."
Twilight looked at Rarity, while saying, "I've been ignoring my loved ones, recently, which is something I'm greatly ashamed of. If I ignored a single one of your letters, I'm truly sorry."
Rarity raised an eyebrow and asked, "Letters? Are those still something ponies give to each other? I just text my friends. I sent you over eighty texts and I got no response. Thankfully, Spike responded to all of them. You can always count on him, to respond to anything you send." Twilight knew that Spike only responded to Rarity's texts, because he had a crush on her, but he decided to not tell her that.
Twilight walked up to Fluttershy's letter and said, "I'm sorry I ignored your letter."
Fluttershy replied, "You didn't ignore my letter, Twilight. I just sent it, this morning."
Twilight paused and said, "Hold on, Fluttershy. You have a big party, that you're planning on going to, tomorrow, yet you wait until the day before, to get ready?"
Fluttershy replied, "I already took care of the important things. I got my donation money ready and I helped set up food and drinks, for the party."
Twilight said, "But that only gives you the rest of the day, to pick out a dress."
Fluttershy replied, "I figured it wouldn't take that long."
Twilight looked down and saw the last group of dresses, that Rarity had made Fluttershy wear. The stack of dresses included mummy wrappings, a witch costume, a werewolf suit, and a bat cowl. Twilight said, "Rarity, these aren't the type of dresses, that somebody wears to a charity event. These are Halloween costumes. Fluttershy, these outfits won't work for you, unless you're trying to get a role in a Tim Burton film."
Fluttershy smiled and replied, "I do like his films."
Twilight looked at Rarity, while saying, "Let's find Fluttershy a more appropriate outfit." Rarity nodded.
Twilight had Fluttershy try on outfits, that were stylish and comfortable. After trying on a dozen more outfits, Fluttershy put on a green dress. She looked at her reflection and grinned, while saying, "I like this one."
Rarity replied, "But that one's so plain. It's one of the simplest dresses I sell."
Twilight said, "Fluttershy, you don't have to buy a cheap dress, to save money. I'd be happy to pay for the dress."
Fluttershy explained, "It's not the money I care about. I just like how this dress looks. It's might be simple, but I think it looks pretty. Plus, it's as green as a tree, which reminds me of my friend, Tree Hugger."
Twilight shook her head and replied, "Let me find you a real dress."
Fluttershy responded, "If you say so."
The next day, Fluttershy went to the party, while wearing the dress Twilight had picked out for her. It was a slick, silk dress, that was mostly purple, although it had some blue dots on it. The party was taking place in Filthy Rich's large backyard. Fluttershy helped Filthy Rich's butlers and maids prepare the food and drinks.
Several guests arrived, including Octavia, Lyra, Bon Bon, Trixie, Maud Pie, Discord, among others. The guests noticed Fluttershy's dress and started talking about how beautiful it looked. Fluttershy was a bit uncomfortable, by all the attention she was getting, but she appreciated the guests' kind words.
Filthy Rich walked up to Fluttershy and said, "Thank you, for helping my assistants get the party ready."
Fluttershy replied, "My pleasure, Filthy Rich."
Discord looked at Fluttershy and said, "Sweet dress, Fluttershy. I hope this isn't wrong to say, but you look absolutely beautiful."
Fluttershy blushed and replied, "That's a very thoughtful compliment." She looked at Discord, who was just wearing a Hawaiian t-shirt and flip flops. She said, "I notice you decided to dress casually."
Discord asked, "Is that a problem? I figured this was just a charity event, not a fashion show."
Fluttershy replied, "It's fine. What's important are the donations."
Discord said, "As much as I like hording my extra dollars, I gave this little event a considerable donation."
Fluttershy replied, "I'm proud of you."
Trixie went to the front of the crowd, because she wanted more attention. While clad in her magician attire, she said, "Greetings, guests of the party. I am the great and powerful Trixie. Feast your eyes, at the beauty and eloquence, that my magic show will provide you with."
Fluttershy walked up to Trixie and whispered, "Um, Trixie."
Trixie looked annoyed, while whispering back, "What do you want?"
Fluttershy whispered, "This is supposed to be a charity party, for the animals. You don't have a magic show scheduled, until next week."
Trixie said, "Well, my schedule hardly matters. The citizens of Ponyville are practically begging to see my next magic act. Besides, I believe my performance will earn this party plenty of donations."
Filthy Rich replied, "That sounds nice and all, but will you be keeping the donations?"
Trixie said, "Of course I will. Somebody, who is as great and powerful as me, deserves any and all donations."
Filthy Rich replied, "As my name implies, I love making money, but sometimes, you have to let other ponies make money. This is a party, that's meant to raise money for animals in need, not greedy magicians."
Trixie angrily responded, "How dare you call me greedy."
Fluttershy nervously smiled, while tapping Trixie's shoulder and saying, "How about you sit down and have some peanut-butter crackers?"
Trixie sighed and replied, "Fine." Trixie sat down, which made a lot of ponies feel relieved.
As the party continued, Fluttershy sat down and started watching some zookeepers bring in animals. They talked about the history of various species and what ponies can do, to support different types of animals. Since Fluttershy was an animal expert, she already knew most of the information, but she still paid attention and she learned a few things, along the way.
Although Fluttershy's dress was very stylish, it wasn't incredibly comfy. The silk feeling of the dress started bothering Fluttershy's skin, so she went to the restroom and slipped off the dress. She said to herself, "I'll be fine. I just need a break from the dress. Twilight did pick out a beautiful dress. It's just a bit uncomfortable, if worn for too long."
Trixie entered the restroom and started washing her hooves, while saying to herself, "That Filthy Rich has a filthy sense of morality. He wouldn't let me perform my magic. He should have standards. I'm the greatest magician, in all of Ponyville. Not letting me perform is a tragedy. Even Fluttershy said I couldn't perform. I can't believe the nerve of that whimpering pony."
Trixie looked down and saw Fluttershy's dress on the floor. She picked up the dress and put it on. She said, "Fluttershy might have a lot of problems, but her sense of fashion isn't bad. I think I'll borrow her little outfit."
Fluttershy stuck her head out of the stall and said, "Trixie, that dress looks wonderful on you, but it's my dress and I need to put it back on."
Trixie replied, "Sorry, Fluttershy, but if I can't perform my magic tricks, I have to do something, in order to get the guests' attention."
Fluttershy nervously said, "But that dress is the only item of clothing I brought with me. I can't go back to the party, naked."
Trixie asked, "Why not? Ponies regularly don't wear clothes."
Fluttershy replied, "True, but this is a fancy party. I'd stick out and I don't want to stand out."
Trixie responded, "Too bad."
Fluttershy asked, "Could you please hand my dress back to me? I'd be happy to take you to Rarity's boutique and get you a dress, that's just as lovely."
Trixie replied, "But the party's going on, as we speak, so that wouldn't work. I better get back to the party." Trixie stepped out of the restroom and returned to the party. The guests quickly noticed her change of clothing and started complimenting her appearance. She bowed to her admiring fans.
Fluttershy stood in the stall, while nervously asking, "What am I supposed to do? I already made my donation, so I could skip the rest of the party. Should I sneak out of here and run home?" She paused and said, "The guests would probably see me. They might point and laugh. I could wait, until the party's over. However, the party's probably going to keep going, for a few more hours. I can't wait in here, for that long." She paused and said, "Actually, maybe I can. I could just take a nap and wait until everybody's gone home." Fluttershy started resting on the bathroom floor. Thankfully, the restroom was clean and polished. However, Fluttershy felt awkward about laying in it.
Ten minutes later, Lyra came into the restroom and started knocking on the stall, that Fluttershy was in. Lyra said, "Please, get out of there. I gotta go."
Fluttershy replied, "Um, I'm not done."
Lyra said, "You've been in there, long enough."
Fluttershy sighed and replied, "Okay then." She stepped out of the stall and washed her hooves. She said, "It appears I'll have to leave the restroom. I'll quickly step out and sneak away. If I'm lucky, nobody will notice."
Fluttershy peaked her head out of the restroom. She didn't see any ponies, who were near her, so she quietly stepped out of the restroom. She went behind some garden bushes and tried to walk away, without bringing attention to herself.
To Fluttershy's surprise, Discord had fallen asleep in the bushes. Fluttershy accidentally woke him up, by moving around the bushes. Discord titled his head up and looked at Fluttershy. He smiled and said, "Hi, Fluttershy. It's good to see you."
Fluttershy hid behind one of the bushes, while saying, "Hi, Discord. It's good to see you, too."
Discord asked, "Why are you hiding in the bushes? You should be at the party, so everybody can see your lovely dress."
Fluttershy replied, "I'm sure everybody's gazing at the dress, but I'm not the one wearing it."
Discord looked confused, while asking, "What do you mean?"
Fluttershy explained, "While I was in the restroom, Trixie took my dress and put it on."
Discord asked, "Then what are you currently wearing?"
Fluttershy shyly answered, "My birthday suit."
Discord put his hand on his chin, while asking, "Is there a special type of outfit, that ponies wear on their birthday? Also, I thought your birthday was on the tenth of October."
Fluttershy nervously replied, "I'm naked."
Discord avoided eye-contact, while saying, "This is awkward."
Fluttershy replied, "It's okay, Discord. Ponies normally don't wear clothes. I usually only wear clothing, when it's cold or when I have to go to parties."
Discord asked, "Then why are you trying to hide?"
Fluttershy sighed and said, "This'll probably sound weird, but I'm scared at the thought of the guests seeing me. All of the guests are wearing fancy outfits and I have nothing. I'll stand out and the guests might laugh at me."
Discord replied, "If they laugh at you, they're a bunch of snobbish jerks."
Fluttershy said, "Still, I'd like to get out of here."
Discord asked, "Wanna borrow my shirt?"
Fluttershy said, "No offense, but you've been wearing the same shirt, for the last five parties."
Discord sniffed the shirt and started squirming. He said, "It appears I need to work on my wardrobe. Perhaps you can help me find some new shirts and I can buy you a new dress."
Fluttershy replied, "You don't have to do that."
Discord had a warm smile on his face, while saying, "I insist. Wanna get out of here?"
Fluttershy answered, "You bet." Fluttershy stepped out of the bushes and she and Discord started leaving the party.
Meanwhile, Twilight Sparkle finally arrived at the party, while wearing a blue dress. She looked around and saw Trixie modeling the dress, that she stole from Fluttershy. Twilight walked up to Trixie, while saying, "You and Fluttershy better be wearing the same outfit. If it turns out you stole her dress, I'm gonna be really mad."
Trixie had a smug smile on her face, while replying, "Taking her dress was too easy. Besides, that coward's not brave enough, to show off the beauty of this dress. This dress was meant for the great and the powerful Trixie!"
Twilight responded, "Change back into the outfit you came in or I'll take back Fluttershy's dress, in front of everyone."
Trixie said, "There's no way you could muster up the courage or magic, to accomplish something like that."
Twilight used a magic spell she had learned from one of her books, that made the dress come off of Trixie and fall into Twilight's arms. Twilight smirked at Trixie and said, "Nice outfit."
Trixie looked down and saw that she was in her birthday suit. She shook her hooves at Twilight, while saying, "You'll pay for this!"
Fluttershy and Discord were on their way to Rarity's boutique, when Twilight found them. Twilight looked at Fluttershy, while saying, "I'm so sorry. I should of arrived at the party, sooner. I'm feel so bad, that you had to walk out of the party, early, because Trixie stole the dress I picked out for you."
Fluttershy replied, "To be honest, the dress looked amazing, but it was a bit uncomfortable. I should of said something."
Twilight shook her head and said, "I should of listened to you, when you talked about how much you liked that green dress. I've been so busy, that I've only been listening to myself and my books."
Fluttershy replied, "And I've only been listening to my anxiety, which has prevented me from doing a lot of my favorite activities. It looks like we both have some stuff we need to work on."
Twilight said, "Then how about we help each other, together?"
Fluttershy answered, "Sounds wonderful." Twilight and Fluttershy hugged each other.
Twilight pointed to the purple dress, while asking, "Do you want to put this back on?"
Fluttershy answered, "I'd rather not, because the silk was a bit uncomfortable."
Discord put his hand on Fluttershy's shoulder and said, "I'd be happy to buy you the green dress, that you wanted."
Fluttershy replied, "That's so sweet of you."
Twilight said, "I should be the one, who pays for it. All this nonsense has been my fault. It's time I start acting responsible."
Fluttershy, Twilight and Discord turned around and saw Trixie, who was hiding in a bush from a nearby garden. She pointed at Twilight, while saying, "If you want to start doing the right thing, then buy me a new dress. I misplaced my magician's outfit, so I need a new outfit. It has to be something great and powerful."
Twilight replied, "I'm tempted to just leave, but I suppose that wouldn't be very neighborly of me. Come on, Trixie. We're all heading down to Rarity's boutique."
Trixie stuck her tongue out and said, "Rarity's boutique? You've got to be kidding me. That place has such silly, fluffy types of clothing. It might please you senseless ponies, but it's not good enough for the great and powerful Trixie!"
Twilight smirked and replied, "Then I hope you enjoy streaking back to your home."
Trixie sighed and said, "Okay then. I'll let you buy me a dress, from Rarity's boutique."
Fluttershy looked at Trixie, while saying, "That's not a very nice way, of wording yourself."
Trixie replied, "Fair enough." She looked back at Twilight and said, "I'm sorry. Please, help me out."
Twilight responded, "Okay, but stop hiding in garden bushes. We're away from the party, so nobody's going to laugh at you." Trixie nodded.
Fluttershy, Twilight, Discord and Trixie started heading to Rarity's boutique. Although Fluttershy thought the party was embarrassing, she still had a good evening, because she was with Twilight, who gave her the magic of friendship.
