Prologue

Rain. There was a lot of rain.

It was pouring down, beating on the soldiers as they marched. Their boots sunk into the mud, and it caked their boots. Some scraped it off with the tips of their swords, some nudged it with their shields.

The water rolled off their armor in beads and soaked through the cloth, emblazoned with the emblem of the Kingdom of Lima.

A blazing sun.

"Did you hear that?" One man said. The others perked up, suddenly awake and listening intently. They stood stock still for several seconds, listening to the rain fall around them and the slosh of the mud as they shifted their weight uncomfortably.

They collectively shook it off and kept moving.

They all stood frozen, however, when they distinctly heard a cry.

It didn't sound like a cry of pain, but one of…a baby?

The men ran, mud flying everywhere as they did. They approached a clearing in the forest and could barely make out the shape of a crate through the darkness of the night. The captain, clad in the crimson red of the kingdom, approached the crate.

He peeked inside, gloved hand on the hilt of his sword, and gasped.

A small blonde baby girl lay there, crying silently. Her bright blue eyes were clouded with tears and she shook with sobs. Her hair was matted, and a small cut ran along her cheek, a thin line of blood swelling there.

The captain reached in and lifted the baby out and cradled her close to his chest. He pulled the cloth tighter around her and brushed some of the hair stuck to her forehead out of the way. He ran a thumb along the cut, wiping away the blood.

"Well hello there. You are the last person I thought I would see tonight." He smiled softly at her.

Then, with the baby still cuddled close, he turned to his men.

"Better get her back to the castle."

King Julio Lopez arose from his spot by his newborn daughter's cradle when he heard the neighing of horses and clanging of metal outside the castle. He walked to the large bay windows and glanced outside to where his troops were tying their horses up and cleaning their swords and breastplates. He stepped outside to talk to the captain.

"Sir Pierce! I was not expecting you back so soon. Is something wrong?" He asked, his dark eyebrows knitted together in worry.

Sir Liam Pierce ran a calloused hand through his thick brown hair and nodded nervously. His green eyes showed uncertainty, and the king picked up on it.

"Liam, did something happen?"

Liam nodded, and turned to the manger in the stable. He reached in, and the king cocked an eyebrow.

Before he could speak however, Liam turned around with the baby in his arms.

The king's dark eyes widened, and he was frozen. The baby gurgled and squealed. She couldn't be older than his own daughter. She had light blonde hair that grew in tufts on her small head, and bright blue eyes that took in everything.

Before he knew what he was doing, the king crossed over and stood in front of Liam, never taking his eyes off the baby.

"What-where did you-where did she come from?" He managed, still in shock.

Liam scratched the back of his neck with his free hand.

"Your Highness, I found her in a crate in the clearing in the forest." The king nodded distractedly.

"May I?"

He asked. Liam nodded, and the king held her. She sighed contentedly and closed her eyes. He talked to Liam some more, and he brought her inside the castle and out of the night rain.

He walked into his daughter's nursery. He was at a loss. Should he put the baby in the crib? He didn't know. His wife, the queen, died in childbirth. She would've known what to do.

He looked down at his daughter and smiled at her sleeping form.

He looked at the blonde in his arms, and decided to put her in. She, after all, was just a baby.

As soon as he placed her inside, she fell fast asleep. He smiled, and walked out.

As the palace slept, the girls lay in the crib. The tan baby shivered, whether from a dream or the breeze was unknown. She cuddled closer to the blonde baby, and tucked her head into her neck, and sighed contentedly. The blonde smiled in her sleep.
