The room.

That room down the corridor, catching your attention every time, you walk up them stairs.

Today was different.

Fresh white paint scattered across, the now new wooden door. A strong hint of paint, still lingering in the air. The black door handle shinning, as you're eyes lingered on it.

You wondered why white? It was once black, different from the rest. Every other door in the house, was white but that room wasn't.

Until now.

You could feel your curiosity peeking. That door stood out before, but now it blended it. Almost like it knew you were watching it, and it wanted to hide.

"Caroline!" a voice shouted behind you, jerking you from your thoughts.

You turn around with a half smile upon your face, at the sight of your friend in front you of. A beaming grin on Elena's face.

"I've been shouting you, for ages now." Elena laughed.

"Sorry..must have been day dreaming." you say.

"Looks like it." Elena says as she pulls you into a friendly hug. "So did you need anyway?" you ask as you hug her back.

Elena's grin dropped slightly as you both pulled apart. "Am I now aloud to visit an old friend?" she laughed. 'Not right now' you thought in your head.

"Of course, I'm happy to see you." you say as you smile deeper at her. "What you doing up here anyway? didn't Sarah say we weren't allowed up here?" Elena asked as her eyes darted around the hallway.

"She did?" you pretended to ask shocked.

"Yeah, don't you remember? We're not allowed up here or in the shed." she says softly, almost a whisper.

"Oh, right." you sigh.

You knew you shouldn't be up here, but you couldn't help yourself. Not since that night you saw him. You wasn't sure if he was even real, no one else saw him that night. Or even hearing a peep, coming from that room.

Was it all just a dream?..

"We better go before she comes back, we don't want to upset our new landlord do we." Elena said before turning around. She then began walking back down the stairs.

"Come on then" You turned your head and looked over to the door, giving it one last glance before joining Elena, back downstairs.

Nothing but that room in your thoughts.

"Are you sure you guys didn't see him?" Caroline asked before taking a sip of her drink of vodka.

"See who?" Damon asked as he took hold of Elena's hand. Elena smiled over to Damon flashing her pearly white teeth at him. "Your not still talking about that guy, again are you?" Stefan groaned.

"Yes I am! Because no one else saw him but me, I feel like I'm going insane." Caroline spat out her frustration.

Damon rolled his eyes playfully at Elena, she giggled back at him. "Your not crazy Caroline, but you were drunk remember." Elena says coming to her defence.

"Yeah..but." Caroline sighed rubbing her checks. "Look when we get home, why don't we wait till Sarah goes to work, and we will go upstairs and have a look in that room." Stefan said trying to catch Caroline's gaze.

But her eyes were to the floor, they were all stood around a table, in a bar down town. The time was 9:30pm Sarah didn't start work, until 10:30pm. They had an hour before she left.

"I don't know if that's a good idea guys.." Elena began to say, looking over at Caroline who was now looking around the bar. "We don't want to piss Sarah off, and get kicked out." Elena explained.

"Well you could always move in with me Elena." Damon said with a little wink, as he gazed at Elena. She just rolled her eyes back at him. "I don't think I could cope living with you, 24 hours a day." she laughed.

"You know, you could always live with me.." he paused a second.

"-for a bit..if you wanted." Stefan whispered in Caroline's ear. She stopped looking around the bar, and look right at him. Her lips turning up into a small smile.

"That's sweet of you, but I don't think Sarah could afford to kick us out." she said noticing his smile drop slightly. He just nodded his head at her, before taking a bit gulp of his drink.

"Come on we're meant to be partying." Damon groaned as he pulled Elena along with him, to the dance floor. Caroline stayed stood next to the table, Stefan stayed with her the rest of the night.

A good few hours pasted before they rang for a taxi. The girls said good night, to the lads Damon and Elena having a cheeky few kisses, before Caroline dragged her away from him.

"Goodnight!"

"Sweet dreams." Damon shouted as Caroline pushed the key in the door.

Elena was giggling loudly as she tried her best, to stay stood up.

"Shhh" Caroline hissed harshly under her breath.

It was two in the morning, and Caroline knew it was best not to go, pissing the neighbours off. "I'm going..I'm going." Damon whispered with a finger pressed to his lips, and she smirked towards Caroline.

Stefan helped Caroline get Elena into the house, whilst Damon went and sat back in the taxi. They made it all the way into the living, before Elena crashed on the sofa.

"Night, night." Elena sighed as Caroline pulled her heels off Elena's feet. "You better go before your taxi leaves without you." Caroline said as they walked over to the front door.

"Yeah." Stefan said softly as he reached out, and pushed a piece of hair behind Caroline's ear. "Good night Caroline."

Stefan smiled at her before turning around and running down the steps, reaching the taxi. He turned back around and giving Caroline a wave, jumping back into the taxi. Caroline watched as it drove away, shutting the door shut.

A deep sigh left her as her eyes darted upwards. She knew she wasn't allowed up there, Sarah was adamant no one was allowed upstairs.

They were sharing a room with separate beds, it was cheap rent for both the girls, as they were saving up to travel. Caroline almost wished they hadn't come here.

She hated mystery and she hated being told no. Not allowed upstairs or in the shed, Elena didn't question it, but Caroline wanted to.

Caroline wanted to know why it was off limits. What was Sarah hiding? What was in that room that wasn't allowed for their eyes to see?

The very next day it was two in the afternoon before Caroline, woke from her slumber. A long yawn left her mouth, rubbing her eyes as she crawled her way out of her bed.

Dressed in her shorts and vest, she slipped her slippers on she gasped as she looked at the clock, on her side table. "Shit!" she groaned out loud.

Caroline ran into the living room to wake Elena, but she was no where to be seen. "Elena?" Caroline called out for her. She received no answer back. In the kitchen was a note with Caroline's name on it.

Sorry I didn't wake you, you looked peaceful.

Don't hate me lol, I'm meeting with Damon.

See you soon.

Caroline walked into the bathroom, and ran a bath for her. Jumping in once it was full enough. she grabbed her magazines and a glass of wine. She needed a nice relaxing bath, as her head was banging like crazy. Even thought she knew she didn't drink half as much as Elena did.

It was now eleven at night Elena tried her best to creep back into the house, without making a sound. It didn't work though, Caroline had already heard her.

"Your back then." muttered Caroline as she sipped her coffee. Elena rolled her eyes as she joined Caroline on the sofa, slumping down as she kicked her shoes off.

"I wasn't expecting you back until tomorrow." said Caroline.

"I am allowed a life you know." sighed Elena.

"I know but your out with Damon, all day and all night most days. We're meant to be saving our money remember." Caroline sighed back as she put her coffee cup down beside her.

"I know and I am saving, but I like spending time with Damon.." Elena explained. Caroline rolled her eyes at her, "I just hope you don't change your mind about travelling, we've been planning this since high school."

"I still want to travel with you, I just..I'm just having fun with him that's all." Elena groaned at having to explain herself.

"It just feels like you too are getting serious, and if you do that means all plans of travelling are off the table." Caroline said raising her voice slighting.

"Well I can't help it if, it does get serious but right not it's just fun, and travelling is in my plans."

"Well I hope so because I don't want to stay here, rest of my lift. Wasting away in this small town." Caroline said after taking a deep breath.

"There's nothing wrong with wanting to settle down, in a small town you know. We grew up in a small town." Elena said frowning deeply now.

"I know we did, and I hated every second of it." Caroline half laughed, rolling her eyes as she took a big sip of her coffee.

"God what's your problem lately, you use to be so fun. Now look at you, your like a shell of your old self." Elena shot up out of the sofa.

Caroline glanced up at her a frown forming on her face, Elena stood looking down at Caroline with her arms folded over her chest.

"Wow, thanks a lot Elena."

"Well..it's true, your being awkward with me, your rude with Damon. And you totally ignore poor Stefan." Elena rolled on and on. Caroline then stood up and put her hands on her hips, with a not so pleased look on her face.

"What's that suppose to mean?" Caroline demanded. Elena scoffed with a roll of the eye. "Stefan adores you, and you wont even give him a second of your time."

"No.," Caroline began to say before Elena cut her off. "Yes he does, you just don't see it. He's always starring at you, walking you home after we go out. Asking about you every time I see him." Elena went on to say.

A long sign left Caroline as she dropped her hands from her hips, slapping them against her sides. "I can't go there with him." Caroline said shaking her head.

"Why not?" she asked. "He's been nothing but lovely to us since we moved here. Him and Damon have been great for us, for you." - "They got you out of house didn't they?" questioned Elena.

"Yeah but..-" Elena held her hand up cutting Caroline off again. "No buts, no if's. You need to start living your life, before it's all over."

"God you sound like my therapist..." Caroline gritted under her teeth. Her chest puffing out with annoyance. "I thought you won't seeing one any more?" Elena asked.

"Well I don't need to any more, do I."

"Maybe you should see one again..you know because..." Elena trailed off.

"Because my mother was murdered and I was framed for her murder..yeah that's why we moved here remember. Fresh start for both of us." Caroline spat out falling back down into the sofa, looking away from Elena hoping she wouldn't let a tear fall.

"I'm sorry I.-"

"Just forget it!" Caroline growled. "I don't want anyone finding that out, I just want a fresh start." it sounded like a beg for mercy.

"I shouldn't have mentioned it. I'm sorry Care." Elena softened her gaze at Caroline. "You don't know what it was like for me in there.." Caroline could feel her eyes begin to water.

"Your right I don't."

"I don't ever want to go back there, even through memory." Caroline begged with her eyes, her eyes beginning to water her lips turned down in a deep frown. Her nose running with snot, from the tears.

"I will start living my life when we start travelling, I feel like it will help me forget, that night. Her, everything." Caroline began explaining her feelings.

"That's why I can't start anything for Stefan, I don't want to get close to anyone, not yet anyway.."

"Of course, I understand." Elena said as she rubbed her hand up and down Caroline's back. Caroline smiled slightly at Elena. "Thank you for being there for me." Caroline thanked as she hugged Elena.

"It's fine." Elena hugged her back but with a sad frown creeping on her face.
