Chapter 1: A Fated Meeting.
He was exhausted. Irritated, annoyed, and exhausted. He lifted himself off the ground, spitting out the mouthful mixture of blood and mud that he had inhaled. He looked down at himself, he wiped off most of the mud on his blue hoodie and shorts. Shook the mud off his lightly tanned legs and black sneakers, and took off his blue baseball hat to brush off the dirt and mud.
Then, he bent down and placed his hands over his clothing, a small blast of water washed the stains off his clothing and face. He then placed his hand over his face, it glowed green as a warm sensation overcame his body. His major scars and injuries, as well as the gaping hole through his body from where he had been stabbed all faded and fixed up instantly. He brushed his hand through his short trimmed blond hair and rubbed his sapphire blue eyes.
He looked around, it was almost sunrise here in...wherever the hell he was. He continued to look around for any sign as to where he could be, thankfully, he still had his sword, the sapphire blue blade and emerald green hilt still sparkled in the moonlight, so he would be safe from any attackers. Of course, he also had the Demonrift, the black and red striped book that he carried everywhere, and whatever was in his red backpack he guessed.
He should've seen that attack coming, of course Palutena wouldn't let him get away. However, thankfully, Sarah would hold down the fort for him.
He paused, that was probably the worst part of this situation, Sarah wasn't here with him, he could only imagine just how shitty this was going to be if it was as he feared. Thank god Ness and the others would be there to help her. As soon as he figured out what the hell happened, he'd get into contact with her.
Now, the only question he had was where and when was he? He looked around curiously, he couldn't see much though, he started walking in a direction he could only hope was north. After a while he came across a light source.
Staying quiet he kept out of sight as he looked from afar. He appeared to be near some sort of campsite, there were three different flags of either black and red, blue and black, or yellow and black in three separate divisions, just outside the edge of the forest there were three kids older than him, about the age of 17 he figured. Each of them appeared to be in some sort of weird uniform that looked eerily similar to each other.
The first one he took notice of was a girl, she had shining lavender eyes and long neatly brushed white hair. She wore a red cape of some sort and carried an axe. With her were two boys, One with light tan skin color and emerald green eyes with black hair, he wore a yellow cape and neck rings propped up around him, he carried a bow. Lastly, a boy with blond hair and blue eyes, he wore a blue cape and carried a lance with him. All three of them seemed to be chatting amongst each other.
"I've heard that we're short a professor this year." the girl said to the two boys. Her voice had a sharp tone to it, however, you could hear some compassion.
"I still question how you keep finding out about all this stuff Edelgard." The boy in blue replied with a rather cold tone. "Perhaps you've been doing some spying around Lady Rhea and Seteh? You know that Seteh will have your head if he finds out!"
"Chill out Dimitri." the tanned boy said with a relaxed tone. "You're just jealous that Edelgard keeps getting information before us. House Hresvelg, and the Adrestian Empire have always been close to the Church of Seiros."
"Claude, please." Edelgard said, doing some sort of weird facepalm.
"Edelgard...Dimitri...Claude?" the boy in the woods whispered. "Church of Seiros? Adrestian Empire?" his face fell. "Oh no...that means that I'm...in Fódlan. Before all those events transpired." he took notice of Edelgard, who seemed to have noticed him looking at the three of them, she seemed confused and he quickly ducked out of sight.
"Shit." he whispered. "Please don't tell me that she noticed me."
"Edelgard...is everything alright?" Dimitri asked.
"I...I could've sworn I saw a boy just now." Edelgard responded, shaking her head. "He looked a bit like Dimitri, blond hair blue eyes, he was wearing some weird attire that I have never seen before...perhaps a young member of the Alliance?"
"Are you certain you saw someone." Dimitri asked. "If so, we should alert the others, it could mean trouble."
"No...I'm certain it was just my tiredness." Edelgard replied.
The boy let out a silent sigh as he continued to watch the three kids. "Wait a second…" he said to himself. "All three of them are here...no sign of anyone else...which means...assuming the timeline hasn't broken down...bandits should raid the camp in three...two...one."
A sudden roar followed by several clangs of metal ripped through the quiet night. All three kids that the boy was watching quickly turned around to the noise.
"Oh dammit...looks like we're being attacked." Dimitri said, gripping his lance. "And we're heavily outnumbered without the rest of our housemates...and we're far out of reach for the knights."
"Welp, that's just our luck though." Claude said quickly. "We might as well make a tactical retreat then. I've heard that there's a village south of here where mercenaries usually set up shop...maybe we can find some help there."
"That is the wise thing to do...let's get going." The three kids turned towards the woods and started running towards where he was hiding. Thankfully, the three just ran right past him.
The boy watched the three of them disappear into the darkness.
"So...this is the night then," he whispered. "Looks like I'm not going home for a long time then, I need to ensure that everything is set straight...which means...like it or not...I better follow them." Hearing the approaching shouts of bandits, the boy quickly rose up from his position and began running after the students.
A small girl sat, resting her head on her hand as she sat atop a large stone throne in the middle of some dark room. She wore a long black dress that covered all of her body except for her arms. Gold decor jewels and designs were neatly sewn or attached to her dress. Near both her shoulders, she wore gold ribbons tied around them. With red ribbons around her wrists. She had long green hair, pointed ears and a weird sort of gold and silver tiara with golden hearts and a pike on top. She also had a pigtail of hair tied with another red and white ribbon.
The girl awoke suddenly, she seemed to be still very tired as she almost slumped off her hand. She blinked a bit and yawned. She had soft green eyes as she looked at him with a confused expression on her face. Though, he was positive that she couldn't see what he looked like with how dark it was.
"Oh my." the girl said with a calm and quiet voice. "What could've brought you here?"
He didn't respond, because quite frankly, he didn't know what he was doing here himself. All he remembered was falling asleep inside of the hut in that village with his father.
The girl yawned again. "I wonder how you got in here…" she said with her still tired voice. "It is most rude to interrupt a moment of repose. Very rude indeed."
Sure, he did interrupt, but he didn't mean to...what the heck was going on?
"Now come to me." the girl said sweetly, but still with a tired voice. "I wish to have a look at you."
He stepped into the light, he was merely a boy at the age of 21, he had blue hair that extended down to the back of his neck with bangs that almost reached his eyes. He had soft, ocean blue eyes which complement his small oval face well. He wore a black uniform with pink symbols of some sort sewn into it, he also had some weird type of cape that had cuts in it from his years of being a mercenary, splitting the cape to look like he had arm holes of some sort. His arms were covered with some iron armor that he always wore with black gloves covering his hands. Around his waist was a traveling sash where he had a cobalt blue holder for both his sword, and a small dagger. The black uniform extended down to his feet where he wore black travelling boots.
"Hmm…" the girl hummed. "I have not seen the likes of you before. Who are you anyway?"
"I'm a mortal." he responded humbly.
"I see." the girl replied. "Then you must have a name of sorts. Go on...what is it?"
"My name is Byleth." he responded, bowing to the girl.
"Byleth huh." the girl said with a faint giggle. "I shall not ever grow accustomed to the sound of human names then. You must possess a day of birth as well. Beneath which moon and on what day were you born into this world?"
"I was born on the 11th month on the 7th day, that is the Red Wolf Moon's month." Byleth replied.
"Well wonders never cease!" the girl exclaimed in surprise. "It seems we share our day of birth. How strange!"
Byleth stood there, confused, he had this dream about the girl before, but this was the first time he was ever interacting with her.
"Hmm. It all feels so...familiar." the girl said. "I think it may be time for yet another nap…" she yawned. "It is almost...time to...begin…" she drifted off into a sleep and the light disappeared.
"Hey, time to wake up!"
The boy blinked awake inside of a small room in a village hut. He stretched awake and climbed out of bed. He walked outside and was greeted with his father Jeralt, a grown man of unknown age with dirty blonde hair. He had a roughly shaved beard and wore an orange mercenary uniform with iron shoulder and arm armor. He wore tone gloves that allowed you to see his fingers, which had small scars on them. He also had a black belt tied around his waist, giving him a tough guy feel to his already scary self.
"Were you having that dream again?" he asked curiously.
"Yes father," Byleth replied. "I was dreaming about a young girl again."
"You've described her to me before." Jeralt replied, placing a hand on his head in confusion. "I've never met a girl like that on any of my travels, nor have I heard about her anywhere in history, it's all so very confusing to me." Byleth nodded in agreement.
"In any case," Jeralt sighed, "just put that out of your mind for now. The battlefield is no place for idle thoughts. Risking your life is part of the job for mercenaries like us. Letting your mind wander is a sure way to get yourself killed."
"Of course father." Byleth replied.
"OK then, time to get moving. Our next job is in the Kingdom. I told you before, it's far from here, so we'll have to leave at dawn."
"Of course." a loud rucas was suddenly heard from outside as there were several shouts coming from somewhere.
"Hm?" Jeralt asked, looking out a window. "Good grief. Everyone is already waiting for us outside."
The door suddenly swung open as another man wearing full iron armor and an iron helmet rushed into the room.
"Jeralt! Sir!" the man said, "Sorry to barge in, but your presence is needed at once!"
"What's happened?" Jeralt asked.
"There's a few kids here asking for some help. Come sir, I think you'll be surprised."
Jeralt and Byleth both rushed outside after the man. Outside the edge of the village, there were three kids around 17, two boys and one girl, all three wore black uniforms with varying color capes in Yellow, Blue, and Red from left to right.
The blond haired boy in blue spoke first, he placed his hand in a sideways motion over his chest before bowing to them. "Please," he said. "Forgive our intrusion, I'm Dimitri, my companions are Claude and Edelgard. We wouldn't bother you were the situation not dire."
"What do a bunch of kids like you want at this hour?" Jeralt asked.
"We're being pursued by a group of bandits." Dimitri continued. "I can only hope that you will be so kind as to lend your support."
"Bandits...here...at this hour?" Byleth asked.
"It's true." Edelgard said. "They attacked us while we were at rest in our camp."
"We've been separated from our companions, and we're outnumbered. They're after our lives...not to mention our gold." Claude said.
"In any event, I'm impressed you're staying so calm considering the situation. I… Wait. That uniform...are you…?"
"Jeralt, Sir!" the man came back up to them. "Bandits spotted outside the village! Damn...There are a lot of them."
"I guess they followed you all the way here." Jeralt muttered. "We can't abandon this village now." he turned to Byleth, "Come on, let's move. Hope you're ready."
Byleth nodded and withdrew his iron sword from its hold around his waist. Now that he was more focused and aware of the situation, he noticed that Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude had all taken out their weapons, an iron axe, lance, and bow respectively.
The four of them approached the edge of the town, just out in the distant night, they could see a group of bandits all wearing the same outfits approaching the town from the openness between the forest.
"We must stop those thieves before they overrun the village." Jeralt said, as he approached the four of them on a tan haired horse with golden armor. "Edelgard you and Byleth go towards the left side of the woods, I'll take Dimitri and Claude to the right."
"Understood." Edelgard replied. She then immediately charged towards the left side. Byleth just watched her go in surprise.
"You might want to go after her." Claude said. "She can be a bit...reckless at times."
Byleth nodded and quickly ran after the girl. Edelgard had taken cover in between a thicket of trees with her iron axe at the ready. Up close, he had a chance to take her sight in more easily, she had long, straight white hair with shining lavender eyes. A weird feeling came over him that he couldn't quite describe.
Edelgard finally noticed that he had gotten next to her. She looked at him in silence for a moment before speaking to him.
"You have a strange aura surrounding you." she said calmly. "You say you're a mercenary, so show me what you can do."
"Stay back." Byleth replied quickly. A grown man around the age of 25 suddenly jumped out at them wielding his own iron sword. He quickly got in front of Edelgard and drew his own sword to block the attack, then unleashed a slash across the bandit's chest. The thief groaned in pain before falling to the ground.
"How...how did you know he was coming?" Edelgard asked in shock.
"I'm used to such basic tactics from opponents," he replied. "Using a forest in the dark to cover positions for attack is basic tactics for thieves. It is best that you always be on guard and don't lose focus."
"Most impressive." Edelgard replied.
"There's two more coming."
Two more thieves quickly dashed out of the woods, Edelgard ducked out of the swing of a sword from one before gripping her axe and swinging it across the bandit's chest, she unleashed a great penetrated slash through the chest of the bandit making him drop to the ground.
Byleth quickly blocked two attempts from a slash before unleashing his own quick slash at the thief. He landed a quick slash before finishing the blow with another stab. He looked up to see Edelgard looking at him with a sort of...approving judge stare.
He sensed another thief's movements and quickly turned around, he heard several thudding footsteps from behind him, but he could only focus his attention on the current thief that ran out. He dodged a quick sword slash before quickening a blow with one stab from his sword.
He turned to see Edelgard facing a rather large man. He had a square face and gigantic forehead, you could see a blood vessel popping out near his head where his short brownish hair and beard simply failed to cover. He looked rather hideous.
"Damn." the man growled. "Why'd you spoiled nobles run to this village." he noticed Byleth standing at a distance. "Dammit, why are there mercenaries here? Guess we'll have to deal with them too."
"Your reign of thievery and slaughter and your unethical battle tactics are not appreciated, Kostas." Edelgard snapped back.
Kostas charged at her with a heavier axe of steel, Edelgard seemed to hold her axe near the ground, as if drawing some sort of power from it."
"Combat art, SMASH!" she shouted, swinging the axe in response to Kostas' attack, both axes clanged before Kostas was thrown back before landing hard on the ground with his back. Several other bandits quickly surrounded them. However, in the collision, Edelgard had dropped her own axe.
"Grrr!" Kostas growled, he started charging at Edelgard holding his axe for a powerful swing. Edelgard quickly pulled out a small silver dagger.
Byleth knew this situation, no way in hell was Edelgard going to be able to defend herself from an axe swing from a guy of that size with just a dagger. He ran over to her and pushed her out of the way as he felt a hard strike from Kostas' axe.
"YOU'LL DIE YOU-" the voice was suddenly cut off as everything faded to black.
Byleth suddenly found himself back in that same area he had been dreaming about before. The little green haired girl sat on her stone throne with a judging stare and head on her hand.
"Honestly." the girl snapped. "What are you accomplishing with that little stunt?! It's like you're trying to get me killed, you fool!"
He blinked in shock, still trying to wrap his own head around what was happening, wasn't he supposed to be dead at the moment?
The girl let out a deep sigh. "Well, it's fine." she said. "After all, if you don't know the value of your own life, you're not going to protect it very well are you? Of course not."
"What the hell is going on here?" Byleth asked her in confusion.
"Well, then." the girl said. "I guess it's up to me to guide you from now on. Right?"
"Who even are you?"
"You can call me Sothis," the girl said. "But I'm also known as, 'The Beginning'" the girl then blinked in shock.
"Is...is everything alright?" Byleth asked.
"How odd," the girl said, placing her chin on her arm as she sat up straight. "I was unable to recall my name until just now...I wonder why?" Byleth didn't respond, he wasn't even sure what was going on, he wanted answers, but Sothis didn't seem to be capable of providing them. But...somehow...it seemed as if she had saved his life.
"Pardon my rudeness Sothis." he said bowing once again. "But, I have not thanked you for saving my life."
"Ah, yes, a little gratitude, I always appreciate that." Sothis said with a smile. "Maybe we will get along just fine now...assuming we can get out of this mess."
"So...what will happen when time resumes?" Byleth asked.
"Well, I can most likely say that the axe of that man will tear into your flesh and you'll be killed almost instantly." Sothis sighed, making him flinch. "Now...what to do about that?"
Byleth pondered on that though for a moment, if time was truly stopped, then there was no point in staying here, going back would just restart the world and he would be killed.
"Sothis?" he asked. "If you could stop time...could you also turn back time?"
A smile appeared on the girl's face. "Perhaps you are right, I will have to see though." she stood up and waved her hands around for a bit, a large circle of light appeared in front of her with several symbols that Byleth didn't even recognize, several spins of the circle were done with the girl's fingers as rings of light with triangles and more symbols appeared around it.
"Yes indeed Byleth," She continued. "I have the power to turn back time, though, it's not very far I can only send you back a couple moments before. However, with the knowledge you now have, you could potentially change the future."
"I will do my best, Sothis."
Byleth blinked back into existence, he quickly gathered his surroundings and watched as Edelgard once again struck Kostas with her combat art. This time, knowing what would happen he quickly ran over to her as Kostas got up and charged at her with his steel axe. He made it in front of her and felt a power emerge within himself. He quickly braced his sword in a stance,
"Combat art, Wrath Strike!" He swung with all his strength at a low angle cutting the ugly ogre man's stomach a little as he fell back, dropping his axe in the process. Then the man grunted and lifted himself up placing his hand over his chest.
"Impossible, I've been bested by some stupid kid mercenary!" Kostas growled furiously, he turned to his few remaining companions making a charge. "RETREAT!" he shouted. All of the men halted before quickly nodding and turning around. Kostas then turned to them.
"Damn you!" he growled, "You with the blank stare, if we ever meet again, I'll kill you!" he then turned and ran off into the darkness of the woods.
Byleth felt himself breathing heavily when he felt a tap on his shoulder, Edelgard was looking at him with interest, clearly amazed by his actions.
"Is everything alright?" Jeralt, along with Dimitri and Claude approached the two of them out in the opening. Before either of them could respond, a loud, proud, masculine voice echoed through the knight.
"THE KNIGHTS OF SEIROS ARE HERE!" the man roared. "We'll cut you down for terrorizing our students!" A man wearing a pearly white suit of armor carrying a heavy axe with a white cape ran out of the forest, he had a thin brown mustache and wild brown hair. He was accompanied by two other men in similar, but less heavy armor. He took a look around before noticing that the thieves were running away.
"Hey, they're getting away!" the man said. "You two, go after them at once."
"Yes sir!" the two men saluted and ran off after the bandits.
The man approached the five of them. "Oh good, you all are unharmed." he said, then he took notice of Byleth and Jeralt. "And...by the goddess...it can't be!
"Ugh." Byleth heard his father mutter under his breath. "Why'd it have to be him?"
"Captain Jeralt? Is that really you? Goodness, it's been ages! Don't you recognize me? It's Alois! Your old right-hand man! Well, that's how I always thought of myself anyway. It must have been 20 years ago that you went missing without a trace. I always knew you were still alive!"
Jeralt closed his eyes and let out a sigh. "You haven't changed a bit, Alois. Just as loud as ever. And drop that 'Captain' nonsense. I'm not your captain anymore. These days, I'm just a wandering mercenary. One who has work to do. Good-bye old friend."
"Right good-bye captain." Alois's face suddenly changed expression. "Wait! That isn't how this ends." he said in a declaring tone. "I insist that you return to the monastery with me!"
Byleth looked at his father, who looked less than amused by his offer. "Garreg Mach Monastery...I suppose this was inevitable."
"And what about you kid?" Alois asked, looking at Byleth. "Are you the captain's child?"
"That is correct," he replied.
"Is that so?" Alois asked. "Well, physical differences aside, your mannerisms do remind me of the captain. I'd love for you to see the monastery too. You will join me, won't you?"
"I guess I don't have much of a choice." Byleth said to himself as he nodded his head. He heard his father let out a groan.
"What's troubling you, Captain? You aren't about to run off again, are you?"
"Even I wouldn't dare run from the Knights of Seiros," Jeralt replied. "Just, give me a moment to pack my stuff up, let my son talk with the students." Jeralt and Alois then walked off back into the village.
Byleth shrugged to himself, he had never heard of any Knights of Seiros, nor had he heard of a place called Garreg Mach Monastery.
"The Knights of Seiros...huh?...They do seem rather skilled." Sothis's voice said to him.
He jumped in surprise and began looking around.
"I don't have time to explain to you at the moment." Sothis said. "It seems your presence is required from those three students. Get going!"
Byleth nodded his head in response and approached Dimitri, Edelgard, and Claude.
"Thank you for your help back there...I probably owe my life to you." Edelgard said with a smile. "You're clearly an experienced mercenary. And your father...that would be Jeralt, the Blade Breaker? The Former captain of the Knights of Seiros. Often praised as the strongest knight to ever live. Have I missed anything?"
"I didn't know he was a captain of the Knights." he replied, shaking his head.
The three student's eyes widened in shock.
"How curious." she continued after a moment. "I'd wager the explanation for that is fascinating indeed."
"Hey! You are coming with us to the monastery, right?" Claude asked. "Of course you are. I'd love to bend your ear as we travel." Byleth felt himself groan inwardly at that.
"You must show a little respect there." Sothis said. "He is only being polite."
"Oh, I should mention that the three of us are students of the Officers Academy at Garreg Mach Monastery! We were doing some training exercises when those bandits attacked. Thankfully, these two took up my idea of a tactical retreat, so we didn't get too injured."
"Speaking of which." Dimitri said, jumping in on the conversation. "You said you saw a boy within the woods Edelgard, did you perhaps see him again?"
"No, but like I said before…" Edelgard was suddenly cut off. The three boys looked at her before turning their heads in her direction, they each saw a boy in a rather weird blue outfit and hat with a sword attached behind his back as some sort of weird red object straps around his shoulders, the boy quickly ducked out of the way.
"Please by the goddess one of you tell me you saw that." Edelgard said.
Gripping his sword, Byleth approached the bush where the boy had ducked out of the way, he pushed through, only to find nothing, except a small black rabbit which panicked and scurried off a little bit away. He shrugged and returned over to them.
"Nothing there except a rabbit," he said.
"Most curious indeed." Claude said, placing a hand on his chin, "Maybe we're all lacking a bit of sleep."
"Anyway, moving on," Dimitri said, "the way you held your group against the bandits' leader was captivating! You never lost control of the situation. It showed me I still have much to learn."
"Your skill." Edelgard said, interrupting Dimitri, "Is precisely why I must ask you to consider lending your services to the Empire. I might as well tell you now. I am no mere student of Garreg Mach. I am also the future empress of the Adrestian Empire!"
The Adrestian Empire huh? Byleth thought to himself. He had served minor noble lords in the Empire's territory in the past, they were an empire of proud military strength. Now that he knew this, Edelgard's personality made a lot more sense.
"Really Edelgard." Dimitri asked. "Must you always interrupt me for your own gain?" he let out a sigh before continuing. "Let me finish my own proposition, I am the future King of the Kingdom of Faerghus, which is in dire need of exceptional individuals like yourself."
The Kingdom of Faerghus was a bit of a complete catastrophe at the moment, from what Byleth had been told, Kingdom life was not easy, territories were under constant strain from several attacks and tragedies in the past.
"I guess that would make you the future leader of the Leicester Alliance then?" Byleth asked Claude.
"Of course," Claude replied. "Really, you two should show some manners, I was at least going to try to become friends with the guy before begging for favors. But, I guess there's no time for niceties in this world. So, Byleth, let's get right to it. Where does your allegiance lie?"
"Umm." Byleth said. What type of question was this? Three important future leaders who controlled a third of Fódlan a piece, asking where he'd pledge his allegiance to? After all he did was save their lives from a group of bandits of all things? Well, granted, he must've made himself stand out with the whole time traveling with Sothis thing.
"What in the world are you waiting for?" Sothis asked him. "You shouldn't leave them hanging!"
Right, what was he thinking? He took a moment to look at each of them, granted, there was only one person here who he'd actually spent time with, and, after saving her life once, it would probably be in his better interest to continue down that path.
"I'll pledge my allegiance to the Adrestian Empire." he said calmly.
Edelgard had another small smile that seemed very sincere. "A wise choice." she said. "Though the Empire has fallen from its former glory, the other regions are merely offshoots that pale in comparison."
"Alright, that's enough now." Alois said, approaching the four of them with Jeralt. "Time to head back to the monastery."
"Looks like we'll have to pick this up another time." Claude said with a wink. The three students began walking off with Alois.
Byleth placed his hand on his chin as he thought about the three students.
"My, my. They are in such a hurry." Sothis said. "You know...Each of the three is most unique."
That was very true. Edelgard was a refined young woman, he thought. But, he felt as though she was always evaluating him for some reason. Then there was Dimitri, who seemed quite sincere, but he could sense some type of darkness lurking beneath his surface. Finally, Claude, his easy smile was striking, but that smile didn't seem to reach his eyes, not by a long shot.
"Yes, I thought the same." Sothis replied with a yawn. "I am so sleepy once again. I may be sleepy but I…" her voice was suddenly cut off.
"Hey, you coming?" Jeralt asked. Byleth nodded and hurried after them.
From within the bushes, the blue hat boy watched them walk off. "Most curious," he said. "It appears my memory is not affected by Divine Pulse." he shook his head to himself. "Well, regardless, the timeline and future of Fódlan are in grave danger with my presence here. But I can't leave until I've stabilized it." he pondered on his thoughts before nodding his head. "Then I have no choice, I must follow and help them if I want any chance at getting home, and I might as well try to save as many people as I can. Looks like I'm going to enroll in Garreg Mach."
