A/N: Damn, I'm back! After like what, six years? With what is going on in the world, I want to do something fun and hopefully cheer some people up: I finally rewrote the story like I said I would :) Given that it was long overdue, I am finally writing Digimon again, with a twist of course. I changed my character (and writing) style a lot and I hope that you guys enjoy reading it as much as I have writing it.
In the summer that year, strange events occurred all over Earth. In Southeast Asia, the paddy fields dried up over a drought…Heavy rains have flooded the Middle East...And America suffered from freezing temperatures. For a group of kids at summer camp, but little did they know that this signals for the beginning of a strange adventure of an unknown world...
"You got to be more careful, Juri!" A tall, blue-haired preteen turned around, seeing that a brownish-purple hair girl had tripped on a step of the stairs.
He held up her arm with lavender fingerless gloves on and dusted off her cream-colored overalls with navy pockets. "I'm sorry." Juri apologized as she adjusted her navy bucket hat on her head before grabbing his hand again and walking up the stairs with him. "Thank you, Jou-nii."
The boy smiled at the fact that she would never get snappy at him, remembering that he would get mad at Shin and Shuu all the time for constantly scolding at him. He also appreciated that she chose to follow him rather than staying and playing with kids her age. It was nice to have some company. A cold breeze sent the boy out of his thoughts and looked up at the sky confusingly.
Juri must have felt a cold breeze too as she looked over to the side to find a tiny snowflake falling from the sky. "Jou-nii, is that snow?"
Jou adjusted his glasses, looking at the snowflake fall right in front of his very eyes. "It appears so…" More and more flakes started falling, making Jou more and more anxious, gripping Juri's hand tightly. "Come on, let's hurry and find shelter." She nodded and ran along with him.
The two reached the top of the stairs, they found a little wooden hut that Jou decided to wait at as the storm passed by. Jou knocked on the door, "Excuse me, it's storming out here and we need shelter, please!"
A girl with a round blue hat slid the door open, surprised to see two people standing, panting heavily from the run up the mountain. "Come in, Jou-senpai." They recognized each other almost immediately since they all go to the same school after all.
Juri took a seat at the corner with Jou, looking at all the people inside. There was Koushiro on his computer, Mimi and Sora were talking together in the corner, Taichi, her best friend's brother, Yamato with a strange boy around her age, who she had never met before.
She looked down at her lavender shoes and shifted her feet around for a bit before readjusting her forest green socks. Juri just stayed there sitting next to Jou who was sitting with his legs crossed and his eyes closed.
"Hello," The young boy walked over and introduced himself, "I'm Takaishi Takeru. I'm a second-grader."
"Hi." Juri responded back in a small voice, "I'm Kido Juri, also a second year."
"It's weird that it started snowing, huh?" Takeru continued talking to her, sitting down next to her. "Usually when I visit onii-chan, it is always hot."
"It's supposed to be summertime right now, with the way the earth is tilted, there shouldn't be any snow right now," Juri explained, looking over to see that the boy was amazed by how smart she was. Seeing that he didn't say anything with his jaw dropped, she decided to talk about a more simple topic, "Which school do you go to?"
"I go to Kawada elementary school in Setagawa." He answered, smiling cheerfully, "I got special permission to go to summer camp with onii-chan this year. It's a lot of fun so far. Are you here with anyone?"
"This is my brother, Jou-nii." She pointed over at him, "He's a sixth-grader, going to middle school next year."
"The coolest guy over there is my brother!" Takeru happily pointed over to Yamato, who was indeed the coolest guy in the bunch. "He's in fifth grade."
"Ah, Yamato-senpai?" She did know him because he was one of the coolest guys in school, always gathering girls' attention. "I didn't know that he had a brother."
"Yeah, he lives with our dad." Takeru further explained. "I live with my mom, so we don't see each other very often."
Juri looked around the room to see that it was a large variety of different people here. Jou was the eldest, a very studious person. Taichi, Sora, and Yamato were all in the same grade. Taichi was very spunky and energetic as compared to Yamato and Sora was very sweet. Mimi and Koushiro were the next two in the same grade, one constantly working on technology and another one constantly talking about girl stuff.
That just leaves Takeru and Juri together, both in second grade—a very big age gap between the others. Juri sighed, missing Hikari, one of the few friends that she had in school. She was the only one willing to talk to her and understood when to leave her alone because Juri needed to study.
"Do you guys hear that?" Taichi exclaimed, "It's quiet." Everyone stayed silent for a bit, with only the sound of Koushiro's keyboard clicking as he typed. Taichi was the first to get up and slid the door open, "It's finally stopped." He ran out.
Takeru and Juri had a peak out of the door, to see that outside was covered in white. "Ah, snow!" He cheered before running out with the others following behind them.
Jou grabbed Juri's hand and headed towards the door, "We should go back to the adults as soon as possible the longer we stay here…"
He was stopped when Mimi peaked out of the door, making Juri hit the door frame. She rubbed her arm but nonetheless brushed it off. "Oi, Juri!" Takeru called when Juri stepped outside. "Come build a snowman with me!"
She looked up at Jou, who still had a worried look on his face, "You can go play with him if you want to." Jou informed her, but she shook her head. She wanted to stay with Jou to reassure him that everything will be okay.
She looked back into the cabin to see that only Koushiro was left in there with a very disturbed look on his face. She turned back to observe the sky to see if the sun was going to come out anytime soon, as it should.
Just when she thought sunlight was appearing, it turns out that it was a series of light waves. Her mouth dropped with awe, seeing the lights flow through the sky, like natural waves.
"An aurora!" Sora filled in for Koushiro when he came out.
"It's my first time seeing one!" Taichi exclaimed.
"Isn't it amazing?" Takeru happily chimed in.
Juri smiled at the enthusiasm that everyone was having, "It's the best thing I have seen in my life."
"But that's weird! How can there be an aurora in Japan?" Koushiro inquired, turning Juri's smile into pursed lips.
"Could it be because we managed to switch hemispheres with Alaska?" Juri wondered aloud.
"You mean Arctic or Antarctica," Jou corrected before stuttering out, shivering from the cold. "We really should get back to the camp where the adults are…"
"She's like seven, give her credit for knowing something," Yamato disapproved of Jou's correction, but agreed with his second statement, "But yeah. It wouldn't be cool if we got sick." He looked around to see a large majority of them dressed for the summer sun, not the winter snow.
Her pursed lips turned into a small smile at someone's acknowledgment for her effort. She looked up at Yamato for a bit before turning her attention back to the lights, seeing that there was a strange swirling green vortex growing.
Beams suddenly shot out and headed straight towards the group of children. Snow flew all around as the mysterious beams crashed onto the ground around them. Startled by the loud noise, Juri jumped up and tackled Jou down, holding onto him tightly as they continued crashing down.
"Is everyone alright?" Sora shouted, looking around to see that the others ducked to the ground to take cover.
"Wh-what was that?" Jou panicked, sitting on the floor while hugging Juri. He loosened his grip and looked down, seeing that Juri was still tightly gripping onto him with her face pressed against his chest, "Are you okay?"
Her grip loosened as she leaned back onto her brother's legs, and opened her eyes. "Yeah…" She muttered, climbing off. Juri picked up her hat as it had fallen off when she jumped onto Jou. Underneath her hat, there seemed to be a hole, probably came from the beams earlier.
She kneeled down to observe the indent in the ground, backing up a bit when a bright light came glowing out of it. Something began floating out of the hole, and although she normally doesn't touch anything strange, something compelled her to grab this thing. She held out her two hands and cupped it as it floated upwards and then stood up, dusting the snow off of her bare knees.
She looked into her hands at the strange device that fell out of the sky. It's bluish-white with three blue buttons, one on the left and two on the right. There is a little antennae-like stub on the upper left-hand corner and a green square screen in the center. Around the screen is a thick black circle with random squiggles on it, and around that black circle, is a thinner one that is the same color as the device with similar random squiggles.
She thought about what it could possibly say on the strange object, but she only knows Japanese, so she concluded that this was foreign. She continued studying the device as she walked over to Jou, "Ah, it's glowing!" She shouted, seeing that the screen emitted a bright green color, similar to the spiral earlier.
Her ears twitched as she looked over to the source of the water rumbling sound that she heard, seeing that a large wave was crashing above her head. Everyone screamed as they fell down the waterfall, and everything turned black.
Juri was found, lying on her stomach in an unfamiliar forest. She felt a wet presence inching near her fingertips as she gained back consciousness after being out for who knows how long. Her eyes slowly fluttered open, having a pair of beady, black eyes meet her light grey ones.
She blinked.
It blinked.
She blinked again.
It blinked again.
Her mouth opened and she almost screamed, but she just sat up and backed away. It screamed and ran away behind a large flower, scared of the sudden movement that Juri had made. Juri didn't really know what to do but sat there.
She looked at the large trees that had the trunk of a typical coniferous forest tree, but leaves of tropical forest trees. Considering the strange flowers and vines and coloration of the forest, Juri had no idea where she was nor where everyone else was.
Juri heard little sniffles coming from the flower where the brown goo hid behind. Feeling bad for reacting the way that she did, she decided to stand up to see what was wrong. She removed a petal, revealing the little brown goo hunched over and shaking.
"I'm sorry for reacting the way that I did…" She apologized, reaching towards it, but jumped further away. Juri's hand stopped from that and she took a seat next to it. "I'm sorry." She apologized once more, "I don't mean any harm. My name is Kido Juri."
The thing took a couple of sniffles before turning to face her, "Juri..." It sniffled, jumping out from under the flower. "You're Juri-chan..?"
"Yeah," She nodded, "What about you?"
"I'm Chocomon," it leaped onto her legs, "your Digimon partner."
Juri put her hands together and Chocomon leaped onto her hands, "Digimon?" She questioned, observing the little brown goo with three little horns above its head, "Partner?"
Its cute little brown ears flopped as it nodded, "Yeah, I've been waiting my whole life for you."
"Me?" Juri's eyebrows furrowed with confusion, "Why me?"
Its ears moved up as if it was shrugging, "I don't know. That's just what I felt like doing."
Juri opened her mouth to ask something, but she didn't even know where to begin. Chocomon smiled at her kindly, waiting for her to say something, bouncing up and down in her hand. "Such a lively, active Digimon for such a plain girl like me…" Juri thought, closing her mouth.
"Ah!" She heard a scream coming and Jou running out of the forest. He stopped in his steps for a second, with a little brown seal floating behind him, "Juri, this is where you were!" He exclaimed.
"Hello, I'm Pukamon!" The little seal waved over at Juri with its flipper.
Jou turned over to look at the creature before screaming and running off again. "That was my older brother, Jou-nii." Juri informed Chocomon as she stood up and followed behind him, "Forgive him for being so...him…"
Chocomon let out a little giggle, "I don't mind. My brother gives me the same look whenever I cry too."
"Brother?" Juri was so curious about her partner. Finding out that Chocomon had one like her, reassured her that they would work well together...in whatever they are supposed to be doing. Before Chocomon could answer, Juri and Chocomon's ears twitched, another thing that they had in common.
They heard a clicking sound and loud insect wings flying above them. Juri nearly fell down, looking up at such a large, disgusting, red bug pass by. "That's Kuwagamon." Chocomon informed Juri, "He's not a very nice Digimon."
"He doesn't look very nice either." She let out a shudder, "I hate bugs."
"Me too." Chocomon agreed, "We have so much in common."
Juri smiled back at her, "Yeah, we sure do."
She arrived at the scene with everyone, standing and looking at the Digimon on the ground with awe. "Digital monsters?" Taichi questioned as Chocomon hopped off of Juri's hands and landed in front of Pukamon and two other Digimon.
They all smiled and bounced around and introduced themselves. A pink ball introduced itself first, "I'm Koromon."
"I'm Tsunomon," An orange ball with a big black spike continued. His cheeks blushed slightly.
A little pink radish twitched it leaves before saying, "I'm Pyocomon."
"I'm Motimon." A little pink ghost went on.
Jou's brown seal went next, "I'm Pukamon."
"I'm Chocomon." Juri's Digimon jumped up.
A rectangular, white Digimon finished, "I'm Tokomon."
Taichi went on to introduce everyone in the order of their Digimon. "And that's it! That's everyone." Taichi concluded after Takeru introduced himself.
"Wait, I'm sure that there was another one of us." Sora disagreed.
"Tachizawa Mimi." Juri casually commented, being unable to forget the number of people in a place.
Koushiro suddenly remembered too, "Mimi-san! The other fourth-grader."
"Oh yeah, I was looking for her." Jou readjusted the first aid bag over his shoulder. She was the reason why Juri and Jou were walking up the mountain in the first place.
Just at that moment, there was a loud scream. Everyone began running towards the source of the sound. They all stopped when they found some rustling from the trees. Juri and Chocomon's ears twitched, noting a familiar clicking and buzzing sound approaching.
Mimi came out of the bushes with a little bulb following her. The trees were being cut off right behind her. "It's Kuwagamon!" Taichi shouted before the bug dived down and narrowly missed the children with its massive horns.
"Tanemon…" Mimi sighed out when the bulb tended her. Juri was hugging Chocomon as they were running earlier, assuming that it would take a lot of energy out of the little being, hopping all the time.
Kuwagamon flew higher up and then dived back down again. "Here he comes!" Taichi shouted before everyone turned on their heels and started running. Sora helped Mimi up and they all ran away from the giant stag beetle.
When the bug got closer and closer, Yamato shouted, "Get down!" and everyone dived towards the ground.
They all sat up and watched the bug fly away for a bit. "What is this?!" Jou inquired doubtfully. Juri opened her mouth to ask a question too, but was cut short when she rolled out of the way of a fallen branch. Jou gasped in shock, at the fallen branch in front of him, "What kind of place is this?!"
Juri winced a bit as she sat up, seeing that the branch had fallen and scratched her knee a bit, but there was no time to tend it—she can hear Kuwagamon flying back. The children got up and started running again, Juri endured the pain in her ankle as she did her best to keep up with the others.
She closed her eyes and dashed, running into Jou, who stopped when the others did. They were stuck at the edge of a cliff with nowhere left to run, but back the way they had come from. "Be careful, Juri." Jou warned, turning around to look at his younger sister. "Oi, you're bleeding!"
"It's nothing…" She muttered, looking down to see that blood had pretty much dripped down to her sock. It was worse than she thought, admittedly.
Before Jou could get another word out, a gust of wind blew as Kuwagamon appeared out of the forest. They all ran and ducked down in the middle of the cliff. Juri's teeth clenched as she landed on her injured knee. "Now's our chance!" Sora shouted as everyone rushed to get up.
Juri tried to but was stuck on the ground. She turned over to see that everyone was standing around her, watching Taichi run as fast as he could away from Kuwagamon. Koromon jumped into the air, blowing bubbles at the giant monster, but that didn't phase it at all.
Juri tried to get up again, but still couldn't. "Juri-chan, are you okay?" Chocomon asked, worried.
"I'm fine, we have to get up and run!" Juri shook her head and did her best to stand up, but it wasn't fast enough. Chocomon began crying and nuzzled against Juri's knee. "Oi, don't cry." Juri felt bad for making her partner feel such distress because of her.
"Duck down!" Jou shouted, grabbing a hold of his sister before ducking down. She felt Chocomon's presence disappeared and then a loud crash in the forest.
Juri felt Jou sitting up and she did the same, looking at the field of fallen Digimon in front of her. "Chocomon!" She cried, running over to her, ignoring the pain in her knee. "Why did you do that?"
She picked up the little goo, with tears rising in her eyes. "Because you're my partner." The little Digimon croaked, "We protect each other, it's what we do." She hugged her partner as tears ran down her face.
The clicking sound of Kuwagamon was back, scaring the children. The monster stood up and pinch its pinchers, sounding sharper and stronger than ever. Naturally, the children all stood up and ran over towards Taichi, the person furthest away from Kuwagamon.
"That thing…" Taichi scowled, "It's still alive?!"
The children stood there, not knowing what to do. The only places to run are off the cliff or into the giant killer bug. Juri looked around to see if there were any other options, but of course, there were none. She looked down at her Digimon to see that she was still weak.
"What can I do to protect you back?" Juri said barely above a whisper, hugging the creature tighter.
"We have to fight!" Koromon croaked.
Juri looked over at the little pink ball that Taichi was holding, "What are you saying?" Taichi exclaimed.
"He's right," Motimon agreed, "That's why we waited so long."
It began squirming in Koushiro's hands, "No way…" Koushiro worried.
"I'm going." Pyocomon determined.
"Don't be absurd!" Sora argued, "Even if you worked together, you won't be able to beat him."
"But we have to go!" Tsunomon fought.
"Me too!" Tokomon included.
"And me!" Pukamon flapped.
"Tanemon, you too?" Mimi questioned, earning a nod from her Digimon.
Juri took a look at her partner, who was still weak, but eyes hardened. "It's my turn to take care of you."
The Digimon all broke out of their human partner's grips and charged towards Kuwagamon. Juri couldn't do anything but stand there with the rest of the children, and watched as their Digimon went on what appeared to be a suicide mission.
"Chocomon!" Juri shouted, but Chocomon continued hopping away.
Taichi couldn't hold it back anymore and ran towards Koromon. A light suddenly shot out from Juri's overall pocket. Surprised, she reached inside it and pulled out the strange device that she had picked up before entering the Digital World.
The screen had glowed green and a rainbow spiral came out of the sky, enveloping the Digimon. The children gasped in shocked, watching the Digimon glow and grow.
"Koromon, evolve! Agumon!"
"Pyocomon, evolve! Piyomon!"
"Motimon, evolve! Tentomon!"
"Tsunomon, evolve! Gabumon!"
"Tokomon, evolve! Patamon!"
"Pukamon, evolve! Gomamon!"
"Tanemon, evolve! Palmon!"
"Chocomon, evolve! Lopmon!"
Juri watched with awe, seeing that Chocomon, a little brown slug with three horns and two floppy ears transformed into a brown rabbit with little pink designs, ears so big that it swept the ground.
"Poison Ivy!" The green flower Digimon called, sending the vines at its fingertips towards Kuwagamon.
"Air Shot!" said a little orange Digimon with bat-like wings, taking in a big breath and shooting it out.
"Blazing Ice!" Juri's brown rabbit called out. It took in a big breath and shot out many little icicles towards Kuwagamon.
"Petit Thunder!" The ladybug shot out electricity.
"Baby Flame!" A yellow dinosaur blew out a ball of flame.
"Petit Fire!" The horned Digimon shot out a blue streak.
"Magical Fire!" The pink bird created a green swirl and shot it at the giant red bug.
"Alright" Agumon led, "One more time!"
The Digimon, in unison, attacked Kuwagmon, making it burst into flames, and then fell back into the trees with a loud thud.
The children couldn't help but have their jaws dropped in awe. "That little Digimon…" Juri remembered how Chocomon cried when they first met and how she struggled to keep up with the others, "Became such a fighter…" Juri looked at the brown rabbit with fiery eyes.
The rabbit turned back and gave a big smile to Juri, "Juri!" She smiled, running towards her human partner, ears flowing behind her as she did.
She reached out as it jumped in her arms, tackling her down to the ground. "You did it!" Juri cheered as Lopmon snuggled into her chest. They stopped their celebration early when their ears twitched. Juri and Lopmon looked over to see the branches of the trees shaking.
A loud stomp stopped everyone else's celebration too. "Taichi!" Sora shouted as two red pinschers appeared from behind Taichi and Agumon. The two saw Kuwagamon coming back, making them run over to where the rest of the team was.
Kuwagamon took a couple of steps forward and jammed its pinschers into the ground, making it crack. The edge of the cliff began sloping and fell, with the children on it. Juri let out a scream with the rest of them as their bodies left stability.
Yes. For these eight children, it was the beginning of the longest, and the shortest summer vacation they had ever had.
A/N: Thank you so much for reading. Let me know how you feel about it. Since I literally just finished this one chapter, I do not have any other chapters prepared yet, so depending on how this first chapter goes, the next update will either be pretty soon or pretty far away. I do have a lot of things planned out though, so sit down, buckle up, and enjoy the ride~
