A Little Dark Hair

Chapter 1

Thomas Kessler walked through the outdoor café maneuvering around pulled out chairs and messed tables. He had just finished a business meeting with one of his warehouse managers. One of their lines had not been selling well and Thomas had been discussing with the manager how to get rid of the unwanted inventory.

He had been moving a chair out of his way when he nearly collided with a woman carrying a baby in the front in a carrier. He looked up simultaneously going to apologize to the woman and the baby when he had experienced a big surprise

"Donna!"

"Thomas!"

"I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to run into-" Thomas began.

The baby began crying and Donna waved her hands and said, "No, it's not you. Lily is getting so big here and I can't see two feet in front of me! It's like being pregnant again!" Donna joked. She hoped her face was not as red as it felt.

"Lily, her name is Lily?" Thomas asked holding out his hand as Lily handed him her teething ring. "Thank you, Lily."

"After Harvey's mom," Donna explained.

Thomas said, "I'm very happy for you Donna. Motherhood looks great on you. You're radiant."

"Maybe I'm just sweating. But thank you, Thomas. It's good to see you," Donna said as she retrieved Lily's teething ring from Thomas. His hand was a little wet, so Donna handed him a baby wipe and then a tissue.

"Prepared as always," Thomas joked.

"How old is she? About nine months old?"

"You're a good judge, Thomas. Yes, she was nine months old last week."

"Well, it's good seeing you," Donna said again after another awkward silence. "I'm meeting Harvey here for lunch."

"I think I see him coming. Well, we should have lunch sometime," Thomas said as he took leave of Donna.

Harvey did not see Thomas as Thomas took a sharp turn to avoid him. Thomas did not hold grudges but Donna's defection a year ago hurt him and seeing the man who caused it took the even keeled Thomas to fits of discomfiture. So much discomfiture that Thomas would have a hard time trying to mediate his way down to his normal calm demeanor.

Harvey waved to his wife as he neared the table where she and Lily were sitting. Lily was in a highchair with her sling slung around the tray and the back to keep her upright and padded from hurting herself should she fall forward or backward. She smiled when she saw her daddy and greeted him with outstretched arms and wet fingers from her drooling teething mouth.

"Hello, sweetie," Harvey said in his 'Lily' voice. He took her hands and kissed them and then kissed the top of her little dark head before kissing Donna and then sitting across from her at the small round iron table.

"So, how's the firm without me these days?" Donna asked. She extended her maternity leave into a leave of absence until she felt comfortable leaving Lily in daycare. To tell the truth, Donna embraced being a mother once she Lily was born. Harvey and the rest of the firm were big people and they could do without her for at least a year. Donna loved being with Lily and then waiting for her husband to come home.

"Why? Do you miss the firm?" Harvey asked hopefully. He loved that Donna and the baby were waiting for him at home and that they could do all the family things together. However, he did miss the COO Donna who always knew what to do and work with him for what was best for the firm.

The Specters and The Ross' all returned to New York with their children about a year ago. Luckily, Harvey had not sold his condo in the sky. Now that they had Lily, they were currently seeking a house in upstate New York where they could finally settle. The Ross' on the other hand were content with a two-bedroom apartment near where their first apartment was located.

The Firm's name was again changed although it was in the by-laws when Harvey and Donna left not to be changed for five years. Louis was very happy that The Specters and The Ross' returned. The name soon to be changed to was Litt Wheeler Williams Specter Ross. The new division of the firm would take on mostly pro-bonos but also those cases where some money could be made, and the justice be done for the smaller guy. It was a type of reconciliation between what Harvey always liked to do (play in the gray but for the good guys) and what Mike's desire to be a lawyer (work for the little guy). Rachel fit in the middle and was made a junior partner upon her return.

Donna and Harvey were holding hands and playing with the baby when the server walked over to take their order.

"What a beautiful baby!" Lisa, the server, exclaimed. "What's her name?"

"Lily," Harvey proudly answered while Donna looked on. Whenever they were together, Harvey always was the first one to acknowledge any question about the baby. He beat Donna every time.

"Beautiful name for a beautiful little girl," Lisa said as she shook hands with Lily who looked and smiled while she drooled all over her little finger stuck in her mouth. Donna took Lily's finger out of her mouth, wiped her little face with a wipe, kissed her baby finger, and then handed her another teething toy.

After the server had taken their orders and walked off to fill it, Donna smiled at her husband and then kissed him.

Harvey, still a tad uncomfortable with PDA, asked, "What was that for?"

"Because I love you and I am so happy you were able to meet us for lunch. Lily misses her daddy."

Just at that moment, Harvey returned Donna's smile and rising unstrapped Lily from the highchair and held her in the air and then bring her down fast to his face where he kissed her and then repeating. When landing Lily burst out in the biggest giggles. Finally, he sat with her on his lap. He loved being a father. He was a bit scared when Donna had confessed to already being pregnant a few weeks after they had spontaneously married, but he knew that with Donna they could surmount anything together.

Lily was a contented baby. She had a cute round face with the Donna's dark hazel green eyes, and she was a brunette for some strange reason. They chalked it up to her inheriting some trait buried in one of their families. Most people in Donna's family were gingers and most people in Harvey's were dark blondes. So, perhaps, the combination had made some gene of its own to show up in Lily. The baby really did not exactly resemble either parent, but one could notice some similarities to Donna.

Sometimes the fact that their daughter had not turned out a redhead or inherit Harvey's beautiful dark chocolate brown eyes disconcerted Donna once in a while. On those occasions she just reconciled her fear with the odd mechanics of genetics. That was until she bumped into Thomas Kessler.

Alex Williams took a call from his one-time client, Thomas Kessler.

"Thomas?" Alex said.

"Yes. You probably did not think you would ever hear from me again."

"Yes, exactly. What can I do for you?"

"My reason for calling is purely personal I must confess. I'm sorry," Thomas said unequivocally.

"Ok. What can I do for you personally?"

"Do you have Donna's phone number?"

"You do know she's married to Harvey, now, don't you?" Alex said carefully.

"Yes, I do know. I ran into her today after I had lunch with my warehouse manager. She had her baby with her."

"Ok. She never changed her cell number after they moved and came back from Seattle, so I'm sure you can reach her on that, Thomas," Alex answered uncomfortably.

"Thank you, Alex. Believe me, I don't mean her any harm. I just wanted to catch up and see how Seattle is."

"Sure, Thomas. I'm sure you could talk to Harvey as well," Alex volunteered.

"No. I had a better relationship with Donna then Harvey but thank you for offering."

Alex hung up the phone then wondering whether he should tattle on Thomas to Donna's husband whose office was down the hall.
