Coral James, a small little girl three years of age, tiny in stature but showed a mightiness that made the strongest and best fighter cower. She covered it with her adorable nature though, her heart was pure and clean of all evil. She wasn't like parents unlike most children her age, she found pleasure in pleasing them but didn't go out of her way for the attention she was proud she was her. Not her mum. Not her dad. She was coral James. From the outside she looked shy but she was pumping with confidence it oozed off of her like water from a cloud. Usually for parents they are worried about their children going to school for the first time - Emily James and Jamison James had no worries for their daughter. They knew she would strive as top of the class and the popular kid, she was like hat in preschool.
She awoke from her sleep at 6 slowly blinking adjusting to the light from the near by lamp. She jumped up remembering that it was her first day of school that wasn't preschool. She flew off the covers rushing to the window flinging the curtains open to the fresh air of outside. New York City was filled with glorious sights and hopes of the single sight that awaited her day to be fulfilled.
She rushed to her dresser and pulled out her school uniform. She undressed from her blue pjs folding them neatly on the bed, she put on the little shirt she was given and buttoned it all the way to the top. Coral strengthened up the collar them put on the blue jumper over the top, the jumper was sown with a golden crest on the right hand sight. She pressed her finger against the logo in awe as to her new found love. Pulling on the skirt and long white hockey socks and buckling up the black shoes tightly. She slid down the banister crashing on the floor at the bottom laughing as she did so. The little child ran further into the kitchen although it felt like it took longer than normal through nerve and adrenaline. The milk carton crackled as her small hand crushed it slightly, she poured it in a small glass and drank it in half a second flat. She shoveled down some toast with butter not even savoring the melting taste.
Her parents came down ready to take her to school at 7:30. They made sure she was ready to go and cooed her about how grown up she looked, she was pleased that her parents approved. They walked her to the door waiting for the bus to pick the young girl up, the yellow bus swarmed over the girl showing just how small she was. Glancing back at her parents for reassurance in which she got a nod and a smile. Just before she got on the bus she ran back to her parents and hugged them tightly in which they hugged back. They gave her love and kisses and luck before the obnoxious honk of the bus interrupted them. They departed with tears filling the brim of their loving eyes, coral darted for the bus before it departed. The doors slid open and she realized this is it, no turning back. Her ears where filled with the sound of laughter and screaming and it contributed as soon as she walked in. Little coral didn't shrink, didn't cower she just took a seat near the back with no one their. People seemed to already know each other but gave her quick glances flashing smiles and mouthing 'hi' or 'hello' to her. She sat their and decided to just watch out the window in admiration to the trees and cars that passed by. She started thinking of her first day in the worst scenario.
The bus screeched to a stop as everyone left the bus talking together leaving her on her own. She climbed out with her head down and her hands wedged in her pocket. Stalking along to her art class watching everyone with their friends.
She was knocked out of her trance when someone tapped her shoulder timidly. Looking up she saw a small girl much smaller than her, long brown hair trailing down to her lower ribs. Her gaze settled on a spot on the floor as she muttered.
"May I sit here?" Her voice was high but smooth and peaceful, coral instantly lit up with a bright response.
"Yes, yes of course." The stranger looked shocked but quickly slipped into the seat next to coral. She fidgeted with her hands looking into her lap, her hazel eyes piercing into them looking glazed over. Coral wanted to say something to this girl but she didn't know what so ended up blurting out.
"I'm coral, what's your name?" The girl looked at coral before speaking softly.
"Emma."
"Nice name." Coral bounced. They talked and giggled more and more filling with warmth with each sentence.
Jack sat on the door step on the front door with his head in his hands, his brown hair swept in front of his face. All he could hear was his mum screaming at his dad who screamed back increasing the volume.
"IT'S HIS FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!" His mum screamed making jack wince.
"I DON'T CARE. HE CAN LOOK AFTER HIMSELF. HE DOESN'T NEED US TO APPROVE EVERY LITTLE THING FOR HIM." His father bellowed echoing the streets and making the floor vibrate.
"BUT HES JUST A KID." She started crying now, sniffles filled the small spaces of silence. Then he heard what he knew as hell.
"JACK." His father yelled "GET THE HELL IN HERE YOU LITTLE DEMON." He sounded pissed off. Again. Jack blinked away the tears that filled his eyes before trailing into the small little house they called a home. Hanging his head down he dragged his feet into the house. The wooden floor was old and pointing up in all directions with the ceiling slightly caved in at points. He walked into the kitchen hesitantly, the kitchen was just two blocks of wood on each side and a small microwave in the corner. Jack saw his parents standing there, his dad scowling at him and his mum looking at her feet crying slightly. He ran over to her and hugged her in comfort, she didn't even move.
"Jack," His father hissed with black eyes. "You are in serious trouble. Do you know why?" Jack shook his head biting his lip.
"Do you care?" He challenged, Jack quickly nodded his head before he had to endure another punishment.
"Good, now when I say to you 'leave us alone' what the hell do you think that means?! It sure as hell doesn't mean keep bugging us!"
"I...I'm. Sorry." Jack stuttered keeping his eyes to the ground. His father grabbed his chin and yanked it up making him look him in the eyes. He could feel his heart rate pick up in speed as he tried to move his head out of his fathers grasp.
"Don't move." His father lowly growled into his ear while his mother screamed for him not to hurt him. The tears he was holding back streaked down his face, his face was flushed and hot. He whimpered and chocked a little followed by a hiccup, he still hadn't quite learnt to cry silently.
"Will you be more independent from now on?" His father asked too softly making a shiver run from the bottom of his spine straight to his neck making him shake slightly. Ignoring the sensation jack nodded struggling against his fathers hand. Jacks mum had left the room now, no one even noticed.
"Want to know your punishment?" Jacks head was raised level to his father who was now crouched in front of him.
"Yes." He replied quickly.
"You will walk to school and back." He stood up dropping jacks head down as he did so. Jack let out a breathe he hadn't realized he had been holding, placing his hands on the floor to steady himself.
"It's... it's a... it's a 12 mile. W...walk." He stated in between hiccups and gasps of sobs muffled by the choke of hope he wouldn't cry out loud and give in to his father. Not today. His father Merely scoffed and said "better get walking then." He stormed out of the room slamming the door shut leaving jack on his own. Jack grabbed his chin where he was grabbed, ouch. He could cry now but he didn't, he new he had to practice not crying in front of his father. He remembered what happened last time.
It was late, about 11:30 the moon was high in the sky the neighbor hood quiet. It was so quiet you could hear a fly breathe, you could hear the flap of a humming birds wings, the footsteps of ants. That was until the street echoed with a shout from jacks house - it bursted the silent so harshly people thought it didn't happen. That was until it happened again, and again. Inside the house was anything but quiet, things where thrown about all over the floor. Jacks dad was yelling at the top of his lungs. "YOU HAVE A SMALL NOSE BLEED. STOP CRYING YOU LITTLE WIMP." Jack was huddled on the other side of the room hugging his mum with blood pouring from his nose. His first nosebleed. His mum spoke before he could even blink though.
"He's young, he doesn't know what's happening." She was very calm, Jack held his nose tighter releasing a silent cough.
"I'm throwing all his stuff out. He wastes all our money on crap he wants then expects all our time." He slammed the door shut and came down with a black bin liner filled with all jacks stuff.
His nose bleed had stopped flowing and he pranced upstairs to see everything gone except a mattress and 1 set of clothes.
He laid there helplessly as he watched the school bus pass by with all the happy children ready for their first day. Not him though. He had to walk. Grabbing his book bag with 3 textbooks in it he began his track across the galaxy.
