On an unusual cold afternoon, Don Alejandro and Diego walked into the Tavern continuing a conversation they had started on their way to the pueblo.

I'm telling you, Diego! Time does not stand still for anyone, not even for you, my son! You need to find a good woman to marry. I want babies, Diego! Don Alejandro urged his son

Father, if the day comes when I will be ready to settle down...Diego answered but was cut off mid-sentence by his father

Victoria! Please, I need support here! Don Alejandro demanded

I am afraid I cannot help, Don Alejandro! She answered

Don't tell me you agree with him!? Don Alejandro asked dissapointed. Diego, what you need is a good woman to forge you into a man! A strong, independent woman, able to bring you down from your clouds and make you see life for what it is. Make you understand that you can't just sit around and wait for things to happen! You must make them happen instead, Diego!

But, father, I do believe I make plenty of things happen. Diego defended himself

I am not talking about your experiments, Diego, nor your poetry or readings! Burried in books is no way to live your life, son! Don Alejandro continued, determined to win the argument.

Victoria, help me! Begged Diego

I would but I am afraid I am too busy right now, Diego...Excuse me! She answered amuzed, determined not to get herself cought between father and son and making her busy cleaning the tables.

Senorita Victoria, asked Paula, her new helper, the wine has just finished. Would you help me carry some more bottles from the cellar?

I will help, Senorita Paula! Replied Diego. It will give me a good reason to end this conversation!

We are not ending the conversation, Diego! You cannot run from it anymore, son! Protested his father

Don Alejandro, asked Mendoza who was sitted at a table near the bar and overheard the argument, why do you want so much for Don Diego to marry? I mean, look at me! I am 10 years older than your son and still not married! And most of my men are not married, either!

Right, Sergent! The old Don sighted defiantly, evermore convinced he had reason on his side. And it is exactly your example that I don't want my son to follow! I have given him everything! We have, I would say, a rather good material situation, he is well educated, artistic, all right, not exactly a „man of action", but still a good catch, I would say! And trust me, Sergent, he does not lack for women's attentions, no senor! But does he ever do anything about it? He runs from them! You know, Senorita Alvarado told me that, as she was trying to talk to him at a party, he actually took advantage of her facination with one of our painings and dissapeared?! We were unable to find him the whole rest of the afternoon. I tell you, Sergent, I am getting quite worried for him! And for me! I do want to meet my grandchildren, you know?

I don't think you should be so worried, Don Alejandro! said Victoria. He is still young and I am sure there is a good woman for him out there, somewhere!

I do hope so, Victoria. But I am starting to fear that even if there is one, he might be too distracted to even see her! And you, senorita, you are no better, may I remind you! Still waiting for Zorro! Added Don Alejandro

That is true, Don Alejandro! But what can I do? I made a promiss to him and one day I know we will be together! She answered.

I don't think so, Senorita! If Zorro is ever caught, he will hang! Replied the Sergent.

That will never happen, Sergent! Replied Victoria

I do hope not, Senorita! It would be a terrible thing to hang Zorro! Said the Sergent just in time for Diego to overhear him and smile gratefully at his friend's remarks.

Thank you, Don Diego! You may leave the bottles on the bar and I will take care of them. Said Paula, a grateful smile on her lips.

Diego smiled at Paula as he rejoined, non-enthusiastically, his father, who had meanwhile joined the Sergent at his table.

You are lucky to have found such good help, Victoria! He said, trying to change the subject while following Paula with his eyes

I truly am! Victoria agreed. Paula is a Godsent! She is a very quick learner, a great cook and has a great way with the customers.

As she said that, Diego could not shake the feeling there was more to the new barmaid than met the eye. Her manners, her smart eyes, her way of always knowing how to approach people, even the most difficcult custormers, all indicated a highly intelligent person.

I am happy to hear that you have such good help, Victoria! It certainly is hard to come by these days! Said Don Alejandro.

Sergent! Said Sepulvora from the Tavern's door. The Alcalde asks for you!

See you later, my friends! The Sergent said and ran towards the office of the Alcalde

Later, Sergent! Answered Diego and Don Alejandro while Victoria smiled at him as goodbye.

Ignacio de Soto was sitted at his desk, a big, evil smile on his face, re-reading a letter he had just received, when Sergent Mendoza knocked on the door.

Enter, Sergent! De Soto invited him

You asked to see me, Alcalde? Asked Mendoza

Sergent, Don Armando de Castilla is to arrive from Spain one week from today. He a very important man and I will be expecting you to tend to his every need. The Alcalde proceeded to tell his man

Si, Alcalde! Answered Mendoza. May I ask why is this senor so important?

Because, Sergent, Don Armando de Castilla will help us finish with Zorro, once and for all! De Soto was contempted to say, emphasizing every word, unable to stop a short, rather diabolical, laughter that made the Sergent's hair stand right up.

He will? How, Alcalde? He questioned

Tell me, Sergent! How does one hunt a fox? Asked De Soto

Well, with guns...Replied the Sergent

And...? Continued De Soto

And...horses...The Sergent tried to find the right answer to what seemed to him to be some sort of test

And...? Insisted the Alcalde

And...I don't know, mi Alcalde. I have never been on a fox hunt in my life! Mendoza admitted with some shame

And hunds, Sergent! Good, well trained hounds that will leed the hunters right to its lair! De Soto raised a dissapointed tone at his Sergent, annoyed at the man's incompetence.

So...Don Armando has a good hund? Are you sure we need one from Spain? The Sergent replied

No, Sergent! Don Armando is the famous El Sabueso, the Hund, the very best detective in Spain! Clarified De Soto, a vein on his neck standing out as his annoyance at the Sergent's ideeas was growing. He has brought countless criminals to justice, Sergent! And now he is coming here to help us finally put the noos around Zorro's neck!

Now, by the time he arrives, I want you to prepare the reports on Zorro's activities and I want them arranged by date!

But, Alcalde, there must be thousands of reports! It may take us weeks! Protested the Sergent envisioning himself spending the next month fending off tons of papers.

Than I suggest you get to work, Mendoza! And make sure they are ready by the time the detective arrives. Demanded De Soto, before suddenly changing his tone: Oh, Sergent, I can only immagine the look on Zorro's face when he will finally be captured!

Si Alcalde! Replied Mendoza, fearing the immage the Alcalde had just put in his brain.

Later that night at the De la Vega hacienda, Felipe came rushing into the library and commenced geasturing.

Felipe! What happened? Asked Diego. You saw masked men in Los Angeles? Entering the.. Tavern? Come on, Felipe! We need to hurry!

Zorro left the cave, headed for Los Angeles. There, he effortlessly climbed to the Tavern's roof and entered through an upstairs window. From the upstairs hallway, he saw Victoria and Paula tied up in the main hall as three men were rubbing the place. As they prepared to leave, though, they were surprised to hear Zorro's voice.

Why in such a hurry, senores? He asked

Zorro! The men exclaimed. Run!

Don't run, senores! Zorro asked as he swang from the chandelier and got down right between them and the door. I was so looking forward to some entertainment and you don't even do me the courtesy of fighting to save your pathetic lives?

The men drew their swords and a fighting enssued, Zorro overpowering them quite easily, leaving one of them unconscious on the floor and the other two dissarmed, at his mercy.

Terrorizing and rubbing two innocent women, senores! He admonished. Now, the money you stole! He continued, a smile on his face.

The robers gave him the money without protest.

Untie the ladies! Zorro demanded and the men obeyed, prompting Victoria to slap repeatedly the man who untied her.

You crook! She exclaimed, clearly upset with the man. This will teach you to never rob anyone again! As she said that, to Zorro's surprize and amusement, she took a pan and slamed the man repeatedly as he was barely able to defend himself.

Following Victoria's example, Paula took a broom and went after the other thief, making him screem for her to stop. Hearing the screems, Sergent Mendoza, who was in the plaza, called for his lancers and rushed into the tavern to find Zorro enjoying the two women getting their revenge on the bandits.

Zorro! Exclaimed the sergent. What is going on here? Lancers, make them stop!

The lancers hurried to grab the women in order to restrain them.

Sergent! Exclaimed Zorro. The senoritas were just giving a lesson in manners to the distinguished senores over here. If I were you, Mendoza, I would take notes instead of interfeering! Have a good evening Senoritas! He greeted. Senores! He added turning towards the lancers and hurrying to leave through the kitchen.

Should we go after him, Sergent? One of the lancers asked

No, what's the use? Once El Saueso is here he will have no escape anyway! The Sergent instructed his men , some sadness in his voice. Now, take these men! Senorita Victoria, Senorita Paula, I will take your statements in the morning...it is quite late right now and we want to go to bed.

Of course, Sergent! I wouldn't want the mere fact we were just robbed to delay your much-researved rest! Answered Victoria.

I knew you would understand, Senorita! He replied, unable to perceive the sarcasm in her voice, and left the Tavern.

So that is Zorro, said Paula, after everyone left. He seems like quite an impressive man, senorita Victoria. I think I am begining to understand everyone's fascination with him!

Victoria just smiled back but soon remembered the Sergent's words and concearn begun to overshadow her face.

Next day, Don Alejandro entered his Hacienda, searching for his son. Diego was reading a book, carefully sitted on the couch, next to the fireplace.

Did you hear, Diego? Asked Don Alejandro

Hear what, father? Diego returned the question

Victoria was robbed last night! Three men tied her and Paula up and tried to make it out with all her money! Was the Don's answer

Really father? And did they succeed? Didn't the lancers helped? Asked Diego

The lancers? Hah! No, of course they didn't help, Diego! Fortunatelly Zorro rode to their rescue, as usual! His father informed him. I don't know how the man does it! He is always there when he is needed! You should really follow his example, you know? To win a woman's heart, you must make sure to always be there for her, son!

I will certainly try father...when I find the right woman...Diego assured him

Agh...Diego! Sighted the old don as he headed towards the kitchen

Later that afternoon, Don Alejandro, Don Diego and Felipe decided to have dinner at the tavern.

Senoritas! Don Alejandro greeted as he arrived in front of the tavern where the two women were watching as the three men who had attacked them ware being loaded into a barred prison carriage. I understand from the good Sergent you made sure to teach those bandits a lesson they will never forget! Continued Don Alejandro with a smile on his face, a smile reflected by Diego as he remembered the scenes.

They were lucky Sergent Mendoza's men interveened or they would not be standing right now, Don Alejandro! answered Victoria. Are you here for dinner, senores?

We are, Victoria! What would you recommend? Asked Don Alejandro as Diego's eyes were still following the bandits.

Paula's enchilladas is the day's favorite plate, Don Alejandro. I think I only have about enough for three portions left. Victoria answered, looking proudly at her helper.

Than they have found their customers, Victoria! Don Alejandro reflected both his sons' and Felipe's thoughts.

As they entered, Paula followed them, heading towards the kitchen. The tavern was quite full but they found the Sergent eating with Sepolvora.

I am telling you, Sepolvora, when El Sabueso gets here, he will surely find Zorro! The De la Vegas overheard him say

No man can find Zorro, Sergent! Sepolvora assured him

May we join you Sergent? This place seems quite full! Diego asked Mendoza

Si, Don Diego, por favor! Don Alejandro! Felipe! He replied

Tell me, Sergent asked Diego as he sitted himself next to Mendoza, what is this I hear about a Hound?

The Hound, Don Diego! El Sabueso! The most famost detective in the world. He is to arrive to Los Angeles in a few days! The Alcalde has invited him here to help us unmask Zorro. The Sergent hurried a reply

Really? Unmask Zorro? And how is he supposed to do that, Sergent? Diego asked with unmasked curiosity

Here you are, Don Diego. This is for you, Don Alejandro! Felipe! Said Paula as she brought the meals

Thank you, Senorita! Replied Don Alejandro as Diego and Felipe both smiled as she turned and headed for the bar.

Well, he is a detective, Don Diego! He will detect who Zorro is and then he will tell the Alcalde. The Sergent explained

And the Alcalde will arrest him? Confirmed Diego

Of course, Don Diego! Confirmed Mendoza. You know how much the Alcalde would love to catch Zorro. He has already prepared the cord he wants to hang him with! He had us paint it black!

Can you believe this, Diego? Interveened Don Alejandro. He is spending the pueblo's hard earned tax money to catch the one man who has always defended the taxpayers! If he catches him, we all suffer! If he doesn't, he will have, however, wasted our money, instead of using those funds for the good of the pueblo!

I know, Don Alejandro. Do you think I want him to catch Zorro? Do you even know how many times Zorro saved my life, my men's lifes? Answered the Sergent as Paula was smiling from behind the bar at hearing the Sergent's lamentations.

Father, interveened Diego, I am sure you are exagering! Zorro is, afterall, a criminal. Noone can deny he has commited acts that go agianst the law!

Against the law? May I remind you, Diego, that probably none of us would be alive today if it wasn't for Zorro?! Who do you think would have dared to go against Luis Ramon? Who would have saved the good people of this pueblo from tortures, beatings, whiplashes and the Alcaldes' gallows if it hadn't been for Zorro? Or are you so jealous of him you actually wish his downfall, son? Asked Don Alejandro

No, father...That is certainly not what... Diego tried to defend his words

I know, I know I always tell you to follow his example, Diego, and I know you have your pluses and minuses, that there are things you are not so endowed for. The old Don interrupted his son. You will never be half as good a swordsman as Zorro, no matter how much you try. And I know that might be quite frustrating for you, but son, that doesn't mean you have any right to undervalue Zorro's actual contribution to making our pueblo safe! Think of Victoria, Diego! Where would she be without Zorro? Probably still tied up from last night, if not worse!

Don Alejandro is right, Don Diego! If it wasn't for Zorro, who knows what would have happened to this pueblo! Confirmed the Sergent and Sepolvora supported his view repeatedly nodding his head.

Diego smiled, unsuccessfully trying to hide his gratitude at his father's and the Sergent's words, not noticing Paula's seeming fascination with him.

Well, you are probably right, senores. So, this Sabueso, you believe he will be able to find out who Zorro truly is? Asked Diego, determined to find out as much about this Hund as the sergent knew.

The Alcalde is very sure of that. He sais that if the Hund will even see Zorro once, he will know exactly who he is! Apparently, he can look into a man's very soul or read his mind, Don Diego! Mendoza replied, seeming almost scared of the man who was about to arrive in Los Angeles.

Later in the cave, Felipe was geasturing, as he normally would in a conversation with Diego who seemed to answer his thoughts.

I know, Felipe. Diego was replying to his unspoken questions. We need to find out more about this Sabueso and his methods before he arrives here. No, I don't believe he can look into another person's soul nor that mind-readers actually exist. However, I have recently read an article published by a Sir Richard Doyle, an English lord, quite famous for his help to the police. He states that he can tell if a man's lying just by looking at his face or by taking his heartrate. I will have to take a closer look at his theories and see if they hold true!

Meanwhile, let me show you something I discovered. You know the fireworks we used in the plaza when Luis Ramon decided to organize the wake for Zorro? I have managed to reingeneer them based on Bertholet's discoveries. You see, he discovered that oxidations with potssium will make the fireworks look violet. I have also discovered that strontium, copper and sodium might also make them change color. Here, take a look! As he said that, he lighted the fuse on a small firework which, seconds later, released a violet explosion that frightened Tornado and made the two men duck.

Well, concluded Diego, perhaps the cave is not the best place for this experiment...

At the tavern, Victoria, who had heard the Sergent telling people about the detective, was visibly preoccupied.

You are worried about the detective the Alcalde is bringing in, are you not, Senorita? Asked Paula. I can see it all over your face!

I am. Mendoza is right! If the Alcalde unmasks him, Zorro will surely hang! The young woman replied

But, Senorita Victoria, if noone was able to find out who Zorro is for over 8 years now, what makes you think that this detective will? Paula tried to encourage her

You heard the Sergent! If he is as good as they say, he just might! Replied Victoria

There is something I don't understand, though! Paula affirmed. From the stories I heard the Sergent telling, he, his men and even the Alcalde were saved by Zorro many times. As for the people he helped escape from prison or from the gallows, they turned out to be innocent is it not so? Why chase someone who helps as much as he does?

Because the Alcalde does not want to see the good he does. He preferes to hate him because Zorro interferes with his plans and will not submit to his rule! He is absolutey obsessed with Zorro! Victoria told her and Paula remained pensive.

A few days later later, the couch arrived, bringing only one passenger, a rather tall and distingushed gentleman, dressed in a modern Spanish grey suit and wearing a long black cape as it was rainy. He had a large forhead, a strange, twisted moustache and a curly brown beard. Although well past his prime, the man remained rather hansome. As he descended, the Alcalde and Sergent Garcia were there to welcome him.

Don Armando de Castilla? Asked Ignacio de Soto

The man confirmed with a bow of his head

I am Ignacio de Soto, the Alcalde of Los Angeles. Welcome senor! This is...

Sergent Jaime Mendoza. The man answered

Yes...Sergent Mendoza will be at your service during your stay here... The Alcalde infromed him

Very well. I expect the reports I asked were prepared and will shortly be in my room? First floor, last room on the right I believe? He asked looking at the tavern, not really expecting a response

Si, senor! But, how did you know? Have you visited Los Angeles before? Asked Mendoza

No, Sergent. Never had the pleasure. The foreigner answered with a polite smile

The Alcalde and Mendoza looked at each other in awe.

Well, Don Armando, as I told you in my letter... Started De Soto

I have read your letter, Alcalde. Don Armando stopped the Alcalde's blunter I know its every word. You don't need bother to remind it to me. I expect full freedom of action while I am her! I also expect that neither you nor your men discuss the reason of my presence with anyone in town.

Of course, Don Armando! You can count on our absolute discretion. In fact, since it is only me and the Sergent who know about the reason you are here, I can assure you...Ignacio said before being interrupted by Mendoza

Alcalde...may I talk to you? said the Sergent

What is it, Mendoza? De Soto asked, taking the sergent aside

Well...you did not tell me that I should not tell anyone why the senor is here...so I told a few people...The Sergent informed his supperior

Mendoza! De Soto said and the Sergent was sure he was about to strangle him but, to his good luck, the Alcalde returned to his Spanish guest. Senor, it seems that, unfortunatelly, your last request cannot be obeyed. Apparently, some of the people in Los Angeles already know the reason for you being here, I am afraid your fame preceeds you!

I see. Replied Don Armando looking at the sergent. I can make that work in my favor but you'll understand, Alcalde, I will need your full cooperation.

Yes, I ...completely understand. Replied De Soto. Sergent! Make sure the reports are in Don Armando's room! Now, Sergent!

Si, Alcalde. His man answered

The newcomer entered the tavern taking off his hat, looked around and greeted with a bow of his head both Victoria and Paula.

Senorita Victoria Escalante, I assume, he said directed at the young woman whom he had never seen before in his life.

Si senor! Ar you the Spanish detective? She answered

I am Don Armando, Senorita. My I have the key to my room, please? He asked politely

Si, senor! Here it is. It is..She answered heanding over a key.

The last room on the right on top of the stairs. Thank you! He stopped her from finishing her indications.

Senor! You are not really going to unmask Zorro, are you? She asked, fear in her voice.

And why not, Senorita? Do you believe that a masked bandit should be allowed to plunder this pueblo whenever he sees fit? He asked retorically

You are wrong, senor! Zorro is not a bandit! He helps the people and protects us form the abuses of the military! Protested Victoria at his words

The man looked at her as trying to reach into her soul.

How long have you been in love with this bandit, senorita? He asked her

In love? Well...fine, I am in love with Zorro! But that does not mean anything I said is untrue! She tried to assure him.

Perhaps. He glanced at her with piercing eyes and climbed up the stairs, entering his room.

The Sergent followed shortly with another of his men, both carrying the reports on Zorro's activities.

Upstairs, the man took off his jacket and vest and started going through the reports, making sure to take down notes about each reported incident, its date and the people involved, as well as potential withnesses.

Later that day, at the De la Vega hacienda, Don Alejandro entered the house directed to the library. He found Diego sitted at the piano in the room accross.

The famous detective arrived this morning, Diego! Don Alejandro informed his son

The one the Alcalde contracted to unmask Zorro? Diego replied, barely lifting his eyes from the piano he was playing.

Yes, Diego! They say he can spot a lie before a man utters it out! This time, Diego, I am afraid the Alcalde might have found just the man for capturing Zorro! Don Alejandro said

Well, father, if that is so, on the good side, we might finally know who Zorro is. Isn't that one of the questions all the people in Los Angeles want answered? I am quite sure it will make a great editorial for the Guardian. Diego faked being unworried

Don't you see, Diego? If Zorro is captured, the Alcalde will have won! He will hang him! And that, my son, is a sight I, for one, do not wish to see! Don Alejandro said with some sadness in his eyes.

Well, father, I myself think that would be a show I would certainly not miss...as the pueblo's journalist, that is...Answered Diego while continuing to play the piano

As soon as Don Alejandro left, Felipe came out through the secret door in the fireplace, showing himself panicked at the prospect of Zorro being unmasked.

Yes, Felipe, I know. Diego said, a hand on Felipe's shoulder, heading with him back towards the hidden passage. From what I found out so far he is said to have single handedly solved the most difficult crimainal cases in Spain and other European countries. Apparently he also just solved two old murder cases in Monterrey on his way here, without even being contracted to solve them. The man must not be underestimated, Felipe. It might be prudent to avoid interracting with him as much as possible, but I cannot avoid going into town or people might become suspicious. Come, we need a plan as to how to approach this man!

As he said that, he entered the cave, Felipe following him.

Here! The signs a man can read on someone's face. Apparently, these geastures are not easy to control but, when in the presence of this Don Armando, we must be careful. Diego indicated to Felipe as he was holding open a large volume. We might be able to fool everyone else but it will not be as easy with a man who knows what he is looking for.

The next day, at the tavern, Don Armando was taking his breakfast at the table in front of the bar, carefully watching the people around him. Mendoza entered and headed for his table, while Paula was making herself busy at the bar.

Good morning, Don Armando! Have you had a good sleep? The Sergent asked with a large smile on his face, as he reached Don Armando's table

Sleep? No, Sergent. I didn't sleep at all. The man replied

Why not? Was the matteress not good? I can ask Senorita Victoria to change it! Said Mendoza

The mattress is fine, Sergent. I did not sleep because I wanted to finish reading the reports you left for me. Don Armando clarified

You finished all those reports in one night? Mendoza asked in awe.

I did, Sergent. Now, tell, me: from what I gather you have many times been a victim of Zorro's actions. In fact, if my calculations are correct, and I assure you they are, over two thirds of the reports mention your name. The man continued to baffle the poor sergent

Well, Don Armando, I don't consider myself a victim of Zorro! In fact, he saved my life many times! Yes, he does sometimes carve a Z in my uniforms, so from that point of view, I guess I was his victim. But he hasn't done that in a long time now! And when he did, it was usually because I was helping the alcalde carry out some plan Zorro dissagreed with. Replied Mendoza

I don't remember reading anything about Zorro saving your life, Sergent. Admitted Don Armando amazed at the Sergent's readiness to defend the outlaw.

Well, Don Armando, the reports...is the Alcalde who writes them and, like his predecessors, our current Alcalde feels it would damage my career if he would mention that Zorro had saved me. The Sergent tried to clarify

I see. In that case, why don't you present me your version of the events? Asked Don Armano. That is, since the Alcalde did assured me you will be at my services. How about we start with your first sighting of Zorro? Demanded the man as he turned to the bar.

Senorita Victoria, would you be so kind as to you bring us some coffee? Don Armando asked her in a very calm voice

At the hacienda De la Vega, Felipe came in agitated.

What now, Felipe? asked Diego as Felipe started to gesture. The alcalde is preparing to execute...Jacinto Amarilla? For what? Hunting on the king's land? That is not even an offense, least of all a capital crime! Do I believe is a trap? I am quite sure of that, Felipe, especially with the detective in town. But we both know the Alcalde will go on with the execution if Zorro doesn't do something!

As soon as the strange conversation was over, Diego went through the slidding door to the cave, followed by Felipe, rapidly changed his clothes, mounted Tornado and headed towards the pueblo.

In town, the people gathred in the market to protest the Alcalde's decision to go on with the execution. The detective was also in the audience, as well as Victoria, Don Alejandro and Paula, all watching with clear distress on their faces. The lancers brough the poor man and put the noose around his neck. Ignacio de Soto read the reason for the execution while the man's wife was begging for him not to kill her husband. As he was about to order the execution, a knife cut the noose as Zorro rode on Tornado into the people's acclamations.

How low can you sink, Alcalde? Terrorize the poor man just to set a trap for me? The masked man asked furiously

Ah, Zorro! How good of you to come...an fall right into it! Replied De Soto smiling

Alcalde! We both know you have no right to execute Jacinto, as well as we both know you put up this little show in order to give Don Armando there the opportunity to meet me! Said Zorro

Jumping down from the horse and overpowering the lancers guarding De Soto and the prisoner in a short struggle, he continued from the scaffold, addressing the detective:

Well, here I am, senor! I am Zorro! Welcome to Los Angeles!

Turning towards Ignacio de Soto, he added:

Now, Alcalde, let Jacinto go before I lose all my patience with you! As he said that, his blade was at the Alcalde's throat.

Let him go, lancers! De Soto gave the order. I assure you, Zorro, you have interferred for the last time! He added, looking straight at the man holding his life at the end of his blade.

I guess we shall see about that, Alcalde! The man replied calmly, with a smile on his face as he proceeded jumping on his horse, but not before carving a Z in De Soto's tunic. Be grateful I only sign you tunic. If you try something like this again, I will make sure my signature goes a bit deeper and no tailor will ever erase it! Zorro warned him

Turning towards Victoria, he added:

Senorita, your beauty brightens even the rainy days!

She repaid him with a loving smile and watched him leave the pueblo in the acclamations of the people

I think I see why they write songs about him. Said Paula

He is quite extraordinary, isn't he? Victoria answered as the discussion was overheard by Don Armando. The man's face remain empty and, as soon as Zorro left, he reentered the tavern to continue his discussion with the Sergent.

A couple of days later, Diego and Felipe entered the town directed to the tavern.

Senorita Paula! Diego draw the young womans attention fro the terrace. My father sent some fresh beans and flour for Victoria. Where should we put the baskets?

Don Diego! Please, take them into the kitchen! She replied smiling

Victoria is not here? Asked Diego at entering

No, she is at the Cemetery, taking flowers to her parents' graves. Replied Paula. May I thank you for your generous gift by offering you and Felipe a plate of tamales? On the house, of course.

That is not needed, senorita. In fact, we have just ate. Replied Diego

At least, let me offer you some lemonade! It is so very hot today and the tavern is almost empty right now, so I would most certainly appreciate the company and the opportunity to take a break! She insisted

Well, in that case, some lemonade would be appreciated, Senorita Paula! Thank you! Confirmed Diego

After leaving the baskets in the kitchen, the two men returned and sitted theselves on the terrace, waiting for Paula who did not take long to bring three glasses and a jar of lemonade.

You don't mind if I join you, do you, Don Diego? She asked

Not at all, Senorita! You are more than welcome! He replied happy at the prospect of asking some questions about the detective.

It has been so quiet here today! I really don't understand why. She complained

Perhaps it's the new tenant, the detective. My father tells me he has quite a reputation. Said Diego

I wouldn't know about that, Don Diego. I find him a nice, polite man, although I don't understand his fascination with sitting at a table and looking at people. Besides talking to Sergent Mendoza, that is the only thing the man ever does. She answered

Well, maybe that's his process. Diego attempted to put her mind at ease

Process? I might not be a famos detective, Don Diego, but I though they should go around interviewing people and collecting evidence, not just sit and do nothing! She protested, making Diego smile

I am afraid, Paula, I don't know much more about detective work than you do! He declared. Although in the novels I read, they do, indeed, seem to do more than just sit in a tavern. He replied

Don Diego? Paula suddenly changed the topic. Why don't you tell Senorita Victoria you are in love with her?

Diego looked puzzled

I am sorry if I am being intrusive...Please, forget I asked you that! She appologised, letting down her gaze in embarassment

No...No...Replied Diego, taken by surprise. The truth of the matter is, Senorita, that I do like Victoria very much. I believe she is a very brave and generous woman. However, I am, unfortunatelly, not exactly her type.

Because you are not Zorro? She asked raising her eyes and fixing him

Diego confirmed her affirmation by nodding his head but his face would have told an expert detective quite differently.

The man is hard to compeet with, you must admit! He added. But, Senorita Paula, while I may not have a chance to win her heart, Victoria has been a good friend to my family and I would rather remain her friend so...

Don't worry, Don Diego. I totally understand. This secret is safe with me! She answered with a strange smile. Now, if you'll excuse me, senores, I will not inconvenience you any longer, as I do have a lot of work to do. Have a great day and thank you again for your gift! Paula said smiling as she left the table and reentered the tavern where the detective was the only person sitted at a corner table.

She is quite an intuitive woman, Felipe! Diego said when she was gone. I must be more careful. If she realized how I feel about Victoria, a famous detective might have even less difficulties to figure it out and that is not an information I would want him to have.

Don Diego! Don Diego! Screamed Sergent Mendoza who was riding with his men into town as he saw his friend. Thanks God you are here, Don Diego!

What happened, Sergent? Asked Diego as people begun gathering in the plaza.

As the noise was intensifying, both Paula and the detective came out of the tavern.

Don Demetrio has been shot! He is very bad, Don Diego and Doctor Hernandez is in Monterrey! Will you help him? Asked the Sergent

Where is he, Sergent? Asked Diego

Right behind us, the lancers are bringing him by carriage. Said Mendoza

Paula, do you have a free room at the tavern? Diego turned to ask

Yes, Don Diego! Bring him in! She confirmed, running to prepare a rather small room downstairs.

The lancers brought the old man into the tavern and Paula guided them to an empty room where they laid the man on a bed.

The bullet is still inside! Paula, I will need bandages, towels, water and a sharp knife. Make sure to wash it well in boiled water and pass it through the fire to prevent infection. Felipe, please help her! Asked Diego

Right away, Don Diego! Submitted Paula

Well, Don Diego? Will he be all right? Asked Mendoza an hour later, as he re-entered the tavern to see Diego coming out of the room in which he had just left his patient

I believe so, Sergent! Fortunatelly, the bullet did not go in too deep. He has already regained consciusness. Diego gave the good news and some of the people gathered sighted relieved.

Don Demetrio was a good man, one of the most respected caballeros of the pueblo.

Are you alright, Diego? Asked Victoria with some concearn at entering the tavern and seeing blood on Diego's shirt. What happened?

Don Demetrio was shot and Don Diego saved his life! Said Paula with enthusiasm

I merely removed the bullet. Replied Diego with some modesty in his voice. The wound was not fatal, fortunatelly. Sergent, did you manage to catch the man who shot him?

No, Don Diego! He escaped before we got to the hacienda. Said the Sergent

Don Demetrio told me that it was one of his men, a certain Cortillo. Mentioned Diego almost casually

Cortillo? Are you sure, Don Diego? Cortillo was there when we arrived. He said the man who shot Don Demetrio had escaped! Ay Dios! Lancers! Shouted Mendoza as he rashed out of the tavern

Now, since my services are no longer needed, I should return to the hacienda. My father might be worried! Said Diego. Senoritas, will you care for Don Demetrio tonight? I will check on him in the morning but tomorrow he should be well enough to return to his hacienda.

Of course, Diego! You can be sure he will be well taken care of. Victoria assured him.

As she said that, Diego greeted and left the tavern.

That night, Zorro went after Cortillo. He traced him to a barn and, trying to surprise him, he dismounted his horse and silently approached the man.

Senor Cortillo! He said, when he was just a few meters away. I understand the good Sergent is looking for you and I decided to lend a hand.

Zorro, the man exclaimed. I did not mean to shoot Don Demetrio, Zorro! You must believe me! As he said that, he rapidly took out a gun and pointed it towards Zorro.

And I should also believe you don't mean to shoot me, you point that gun out of mere courtesy. Zorro replied smiling

I am quite sure the alcalde will not rise a hand upon me if I bring him his biggest enemy! Cortillo replied thinking at the prospective of collecting the 6000 pesos reward for Zorro's capture. Now, Zorro, put down your sword and turn around!

Zorro smiled

I am afraid you are missreading the situation, senor. From what I see, you are outnumbered. The masked man warned

You are but one man! Replied Cortillo

Aaah, but I believe you are forgetting about my horse, senor! Said Zorro and, as he said that, he signaled his stallion and Tornado attacked the armed man, causing him to fire his gun into the ground.

A moment later, Zorro punched him so hard that the man fell to the ground, the pain too deep for him to be able to even move.

A man who attempts to take the life of his benefactor, senor, is but an ungrateful coward who fully deserves whatever our esteemed alcalde has in store for him! Zorro said

As the fight was finished, Zorro tied up his prisoner, mounting him on his horse. He than mounted Tornado and brought Cortillo to the entrance of the pueblo where he let the horse continue on his own towards the garrison, just as the Sergent and his men were dismounting at returning empty-handed from the night's chase.

The next afternoon at the tavern, the Sergent was telling the detective a story about Zorro.

Excuse me, Sergent! Interveened Don Alejandro, who was at the tavern with Felipe. May I remind you that it was Zorro who captured and delivered to justice those murderers?

Well, Don Alejandro, Zorro did help but it was I, Sergent Mendoza who put them in jail!

Yes, you took them from the plaza where Zorro left them well tied up for you and put them in jail! Or are you also going to assume credit for the evidence he provided you with in order to capture their leader? Asked Victoria

What evidence, senorita? Asked the detective

Well, senor, I don't know exactly what it was. Said Mendoza. It looked like a very good small and quite exact painting in black and white, depicting the bandidos around a fire. It is how we knew who their leader was. It faded away after a while but they had confessed by that point so it no longer mattered.

Do you mean to say Zorro provided you with a heliography? Asked Don Armando puzzled

What is a heliography? Asked the Sergent in return

The detective smiled.

Sergent, I want a list of all the educated caballeros in Los Angeles between the ages of... 26 and 50. Don Armando ordered

Si senor, but may I enquire as to why? Asked the Sergent

Because, Sergent, men like you have not even heard of heliograpfhies while men like Zorro seem perfectly able to take one. Now, if you'll excuse me, senores, I must get some rest. As he said that, the strange man directed himself towards his room, leaving everyone in silent consternation.

As soon as the door to his room closed, the people downstairs started talking again.

We fell right into that one, Victoria! Said Don Alejandro

You don't really think Zorro is a caballero, do you? She asked

I don't know, Victoria, but I surely don't like where this is heading! As he said that, he called for Felipe, who had also withnessed the entire scene, and headed for his hacienda.

Later that afternoon, in the cave, Diego sat pensive at his desk.

The moment the Sergent informs De Soto about the detective's request, he will surely send his men to arrest everyone, me included. He told Felipe. The detective is getting too close. We need to derrail him. But how can I do that from prison, especially surrounded by other caballeros?

Felipe! He said as an ideea crossed his mind. I think it is perhaps time to see how you look with the mask! And a mustache, my friend! He added, smiling as Felipe's expression betrayed some mixture of intrigue and panic.

Meanwhile, at the Alcalde's office, Mendoza finished the list of the young caballeros in Los Angeles.

Here is the list Don Armando requested, Alcalde! Said the Sergent handing down a piece of paper.

26 men. Excellent! Well done, Sergent! De Soto did not try to hide his content smile. One of these men must be Zorro! I finally have him in my grasp! Sergent, gather the lancers!

Gather the lancers, Alcalde? What for? Asked Mendoza

You will bring all these caballeros here tonight! De Soto clarified. I don't want to give Zorro any chance to escape!

But, Alcalde, the prison does not have enough room for so many people! Where will they sleep? Protested Mendoza, part of him fearing Zorro might indeed be on that list.

Sleep, Sergent? De Soto's face was radiating. Why should they sleep? You see, depriving Zorro of sleep will certainly ensure his capture tomorrow! The detective will have no problem with getting the truth out of him once he will have spent a night cramped up in our jail!

Si Alcalde...But the Dons will not like this! They may pose us some problems...Mendoza tried to make him see reason

Good, Sergent! The more resistence you encounter, the more likely it is for the caballero in question to have knowledge of Zorro's identity, or to be the man himself! Get those men here at once, Sergent! And make a list of everyone who resists arrest! De Soto continued

Si Alcalde! Was all the Sergent was able to utter as he left the office.

Finally, senor! I shall have you in my prison...De Soto whispered just for himself. And, soon, you shall hang from a noos and I will finally return a hero to my beloved Madrid!

At the De la Vega Hacienda somebody was knoking on the door a little after midnight.

Are you expecting someone, father? Asked Diego, dressed in a robe, at exiting his room.

Who might be at such a time of night? Don Alejandro asked instead of replying

Don Alejandro...said the Sergent as the man opened the door.

Something the matter, Sergent? Asked Diego. Not another man shot, I hope!

Si, no, Don Diego, noone was shot. Said the Sergent his face clearly showing he was dreading the task at hand

Than, Sergent, what is the matter? Asked Don Alejandro

I...I am here to arrest Don Diego! Uttered Mendoza

Arrest me? He asked faking surprise. Whatever for, Sergent?

Well...for possibly being Zorro, Don Diego...It is the Alcalde's order. He tried to excuse his action

Diego, Zorro? Has the Alcalde gone mad, Sergent? Asked Don Alejandro infuriated

No, Don Alejandro...it is not that we are suspecting of Don Diego. We are detaining all the caballeros in town between the ages of 26 and 50. Mendoza clarified

I see! This is about that detective's request, isn't it? Asked Don Alejandro

Yes, it is, Don Alejandro. The Alcalde wants to make sure Zorro doesn't escape. Said Mendoza

But detaining them in the middle of the night...Don Alejandro protested

It is alright, father! The Sergent is just doing his duty. Diego tried to calm down his father. I will go get dressed, if you don't mind, Sergent, and will be with you shortly.

Thank you for understanding, Don Diego. I am very sorry, Don Alejandro. Mendoza lamented his position

Don Alejandro seemed quite mad. Diego returned soon and accompanied the sergent to the prison where about 20 people were already protesting their incarceration. 5 more were brought in after Diego.

Next morning, interviews started in the tavern, at the request of the detective who, sitted at his normal table, met with the men one by one. As he finished with each of them, the Sergent returned the men to the jail. Diego's turn came around 6 PM, as it was already getting rather dark. Felipe was monitoring for when Diego was to be taken to the tavern and, as he saw Diego being taken there by the Sergent and one of his lancers, he rode to the cave, dressed up as Zorro and headed toward the town mounted on Tornado. When he arrived at the gate, he made sure he was seen by the lancers and than started circling the pueblo at a safe distance, just as Diego instructed him.

At hearing that Zorro was there, the people in the tavern, including the detective, the lancer guarding Diego Victoria and Paula, exited quickly to see what was going on. At that point, taking advantage of the fact noone was paying any attention to him, Diego changed into a Zorro costume Felipe had left for him and, as Felipe entered on Tornado, they switched palces near the tavern. Than, making sure he had everybody's undivided attention, Zorro entered the plaza headed directly for De Soto.

Good day, Alcalde! He greeted, pointing his sword at De Soto. If anyone tries to shoot, I will press my sword a little further into your neck! He said

Noone move! De Soto ordered, dissapointed the man was not in his jail but still roaming free.

I understand you are preparing a party, Alcalde, since that is the only explaination for your sudden urge to summon so many well educated caballeros to your office! Well, since you have troubled yourself with inviting the guests, please, allow me to provide the entertainment! Said Zorro

As he finished uttering the words, he left the plaza in everybody's confusion and, switching places again with Felipe, Diego changed back into his clothes, hidding Zorro's things, as Felipe lighted up the fireworks that they had previously placed near the pueblo, doing another tour around the town. The fireworks started in turn, some of them aimed at the plaza instead of the sky, giving the pueblo a show of lights the people had never seen before and, at the same time, startling the horses of the quartel's lancers which were preparing to follow Zorro.

Well, Diego told the detective as everyone was watching Zorro escapeand as the lancers were being trown off their horses, one must admit seeing Zorro does always provide for some good entertainment!

The Detective, Paula and Victoria, who were all there, turned towards him, the Detective with a blank expression, Paula almst confused and Victoria smiling.

Alcalde! Do you believe that Zorro has the magical power to be in two places at the same time? Shouted Don Alejandro who had arrived into town accompanied by other Dons, minutes before Zorro was making his escape.

Now, that would be quite disconcerting! Said Diego at hearing his father who was now the pueblo's center of attention

The Alcalde undertood exactly what the Don was implying.

Sergent! Let the men we have in prison go! Said De Soto dissapointed

Don Diego, too, Alcalde? Asked Mendoza

Diego? I don't even know why you bothered arresting him, Sergent! Replied De Soto.

But you gave me specific orders, Alcalde. Shouted Mendoza appologetic.

I gave you orders to arrest all men who could be Zorro! A turnip has more chances to be Zorro than Diego de la Vega! Came the reply and Diego faked being mildly offended by the alcalde's remark.

Later that evening at the tavern, Don Alejandro, Felipe and another caballero were sitted at a table, discussing the day's events when Sergent Mendoza came in.

Don Alejandro, Don Esteban, how are you? he asked

Very well, Sergent! Replied Don Alejandro. Now that my son is out of the Alcalde's prison!

I am verry sorry about that, Don Alejandro, but the alcalde had given me specific instructions...The Sergent tried to appologise

Oh, Sergent, you as well as us, know quite well that Diego is no Zorro! You should have known better than to arrest him! Said Victoria who overheard the conversation

That is true, Senorita Victoria, but I don't have a say in such matters...

By the way, Don Alejandro, where is Diego? Asked Victoria

He is at the hacienda, making up for the sleep he missed last night. Do you know the Alcalde actually put 13 people in each of the jail cells? Cooked up like sardines!? The man knows no bounderies! Don Alejandro underlined his dissproval

Felipe was sitted with his back at Victoria and smiled when she said that Diego is no Zorro, a smile only a certain very observant barmaid cought, and which made a smile appear on her face.

The next day, Don Alejandro, Diego and Felipe arrived at the tavern around noon, in order to get lunch. At the same time, the detective was exiting the tavern, heading for the market. Paula was on the terrace, and greeted the men with a smile. As they were preparing to enter, the Alcalde exited his office and the conversation that followed made all the people in the plaza turn their attention to it. Victoria also exited bringing a bottle of wine for one of the clients and joined them in listening to the conversation.

Don Armando! Yelled the Alcalde.

Alcalde! he answered with a smile.

Sergent Mendoza told me you have not been requesting his services since yesterday afternoon. Said the Alcalde. Is there something wrong? I can assure you, I don't hold your mistake against you, senor! My man is still at your disposal.

Thank you, Alcalde, but I don't need him anymore. Don Armando answered

What you mean, you don't need him? Than what do you need? Tell me how can I help you and I will make sure to comply, Don Armando. De Soto insisted

Well, Alcalde, while I appreciate the offer, since my work here is finished, I will not need your support anymore, nor that of your men, senor! In fact, I will be leaving Los Angeles on today's coach to Monterrey. Don Armando tried to clarify

Your work is done? Should I than understand that you know who Zorro is? Asked the Alcalde

No, Alcalde. Since that is not actually my job. However, El Sabueso does! Said the man

I am afraid I don't fully understand, Don Armando! Said the Alcalde nervously. I thought you were El Sabueso...

A common mistake, Alcalde! The man replied

But you said...De Soto made one last attempt

I said I was Don Armando de Castilla and that is who I am, Alcalde. However, I am not El Sabueso, nor am I a detective.

You are not? Than, I am at a loss, senor, and I suggest you explain yourself! Asked De Soto as he was becoming quite nervous

I am not El Sabueso, Alcalde, but I do work for the famous detective. And while I myself don't know the true identity of Zorro, since the detective decided not to share that information with me, the detective did, however, asked me to give you the following message. As he said that, he took a piece of paper from his jacket and read it out loud:

Alcalde De Soto, it started

I have come to Los Angeles to catch an archcriminal you accused in your letter to me of having committed a multitude of crimes and endangered the lives of the people of this community. I have arrived committed to help you bring such a man to justice.

However, in the time I spent in this pueblo, I have seen no evidence of crimes committed by Zorro. In fact, the only criminals I have encountered here sit either in jail or behind your desk. As for the man known as Zorro, all I saw was a man able and willing to sacrifice his life in the service of others, a man this community depends upon more than it actually realizes.

Under these circumstances and considering that you asked me here under a false pretense, I, El Sabueso, inform you, Alcalde De Soto, about my refusal to partake in your schemes and divulge Zorro's real name".

What? Asked the Alcalde as people started applauding and Diego, his father and Victoria were hardly hidding their satisfaction with the turn of events. How, how dare you, senor? I demand you inform me who Zorro is or I will make you regret this inssolence!

As I told you, Alcalde, I do not know and El Sabueso has already left Los Angeles yesterday evening, so I have no way of finding out. The man replied calmly. Furthermore, since El Sabueso has anticipated your menace, I do want to inform you that my escort to Monterrey, provided by the Governor, should be here shortly.

The Alcalde left infuriated, cursing at the man and telling the Sergent he is just covering for his abject failure to find out who Zorro is.

Well, that was quite an unexpected turn of events. Said Don Alejandro, delighted at how it all turned out.

It certainly was, father. Approved Diego, wondering who the detective actually was, if not Don Armando, and if he really knew Zorro's true identity.

See, Don Diego? In the end, no matter how many lies one invents to hide the truth, the truth will always come out! Said Victoria not perceiving the irony hidden in her own words.

A week later, Diego and Don Alejandro came to the tavern to say goodbye to Paula, who was departing for Monterrey in order to look after her sick mother.

We are sorry to see you leave, Senorita! said Don Alejandro.

Do you plan to return once your mother is feeling better? Asked Diego

Who knows? Life can take one to all sort of different places. Afteral, wisdom begins in wonder. Replied Paula and Diego seemed confused.

Did she just quote Socrates? Diego asked himself.

Will you join me for a coffee, Don Diego, as I wait for the carriage? Asked Paula as Don Alejandro apologized and directed himself towards some friends of his, sitted a few meters away.

He agreed with a node and a short hand geasture, inviting Paula to sit at the nearest table. As she sat down, she smiled, studying him, which made him rather uncomfortabe.

Tell me, Don Diego! she asked in a low voice, making sure they are not overheard. What do you think would have happen if the detective had decided to unmask Zorro? In case he actually knew who he was, I mean! She added quickly

Diego looked at her confused.

Well, I guess he would have been executed. He replied, wondering what prompted the question

Right... she said pensive. That would have been a shame! I am not sure his father would ever recover from that. Not to mention Victoria and Felipe.

Diego became more intrigued as a shiver passed through him. Did the woman before him know he was Zorro?

I guess it's a good thing El Sabueso decided to keep Zorro's identity a secret in that case! She continued as he came to full realisation as to whom he was actually addressing.

He had noticed that the woman before him seemed much better educated than most women he had ever known. She tried to hide it but, as it was the case with him, one can never fully hide one's true self.

Yes, I believe it is. He confirmed glancing at her with admiration. Zorro, I am sure, is very grateful for the detective's decision. He said, finishing the discussion just as Victoria came to inform them that the Carriage had arrived.

Well, I guess it is time for me to go. Paula concluded. Goodbye Don Diego! And, may I say, you are most welcome! Victoria, my friend, I shall never forget you!

Nor I you, Paula! said Victoria. I am very sorry to see you leave and I do hope your mother will be better soon!

A seif trip, Senorita Paula! Give our bests to your mother! Added Don Alejandro.

Victoria accompanied her right to the carriage door and gave her a huge hug as the men watched from the terrace.

You know, Victoria, I might not be a famous detective, but I am quite sure you are destined to be a De la Vega, my friend. Paula whispered in Victoria's ear as they embraced

Victoria smiled not undertsanding what her friend was saying and looked at Diego puzzled as the carriage was leaving Los Angeles. Diego, in turn, watched the carrige, his smile betraying both fascination and something resembling fear – or as close as the man could come to actually feeling fear.
