Chapter 1: Ridiculously Sirius
It had always seemed so silly to Remus that muggles were so unaccustomed to magic. Sure, maybe seeing things move by themselves and people disappearing into a train station wall would freak them out but, disappearing is all that Remus wanted to do at the moment of stepping on the platform of nine and three quarters. Seeing the Hogwarts express engine before him and all the other students saying goodbye to their parents, allowed for the nerves to start up again. He had everything that he needed for school including a now sleeping owl, black as night, his head tucked under his wings. His father and mother had little money to spare but in order to keep in contact with their son they wanted to be sure he had a reliable letter carrier. They had left him to go on to the platform himself, as Remus's mother would have been crying too long and probably would have not let him get on the train if she had seen him off. For lack of a better name for the owl Remus had decided on Soot , while thinking about it the name was ridiculous but suiting at the same time, since Remus was always covered in it from falling asleep near the fireplace at home from reading anything he could pull from his father's bookcase back home.
"Sorry, soot." Remus commented as he unloaded his new friend to take him into an actual compartment of the Hogwarts Express, along with his used trunk that was his fathers. Remus prayed to Merlin Handel didn't break, not only because it was his fathers but for a quick parting gift his mother got it embroidered with R. J. Lupin. Remus was not the most materialistic person but he did care for the little nice things he had in his possession. Besides the trouble of carrying the trunk any other way would be a nightmare, as he was barely making it past the other students boarding the train. The only thing that was more stuffy than the engine smell of the train was that of the uncomfortableness that set in as he was going by all the compartments that were full of people who already seemed to know each other or ones that were already filled to the occupancy. Soot shook his feathers regaining the energy to finally look around at the environment he was in and also probably into all the admirers that smiled as they saw him passing, Remus chuckled as he turned his head all the way around looking at him.
"Nervous, as am I." Remus said quietly knowing full well the owl wouldn't answer back but having some sort of friend to talk to was calming. Walking to the back of the final compartment the anxiety of having to stand for the ride to Hogwarts was beginning to set in or at least until he found an empty space near the back of the cart. With a sigh of relief that it was empty and that the spot existed, Remus put Soot across the seat in view so Remus could watch him on the ride to school. Remus lifted his trunk and readjusted his robes that he got and breathed. Having had such a long morning, between getting spellbooks, robes, and other supplies that was mentioned in the acceptance letter of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry , sitting down felt so relaxing. So Relaxing that the fainted sound of, "Hello." made Remus jump, "Oh, my apologies… I was just wondering if I could perhaps sit here with you?"
A short light haired boy stood at the doorway with his trunk in hand and the other was a barn owl, that was way more mature than Soot. His robes were a bit bigger on him than were needed yet looked new. Remus wasn't one to judge others but figured that it was a way to save money for the future years at hogwarts, robes were not the least expensive thing they had to buy. Overall the boy was small compared to Remus and even small compared to his things.
"Of course, come sit." Remus said readjusting Soot's cage so the boy could put his owl on the seat as well. Soot didn't mind the new addition to his side of the compartment, in fact Soot seemed to be wanting to talk to the new owl as he started to screech and peck at the door of his cage.
"Seems he's made a new friend, what's his name?" The boy asked, finally shoving his trunk above the two's heads having had to post himself up on the seat to even get it up on the railings.
"Soot." Remus said rather embarrassedly to admit it.
"Soot…" Remus thought the boy was about to start laughing or ridiculing the decision of name however, the boy leaned forward and started to stroke Soot's black feathers through the bars of his cage.
"This…" he gestured to his owl "is Rigby." The bigger brown owl seemed less interested in Soot and more focused on trying to sleep more. Nevertheless Soot was still trying to pry open his cage, which was pretty luxurious for being a home for an owl. The cage was shaped like a house and with the size of Soot now , could fit about four other owls his size.
"Forgive him, he's only ever known the shop in which we got him. It's all a bit much the excitement of a new experience." Remus said feeling a bit misrepresented by the baby owl's behavior and noise. The creature-like instincts of the owl honestly were not very welcoming to Remus, while others may have found it to be cute, or even annoying… Remus found it to be rather chilling. The fact all Remus could do was apologize about Soot made remus hide behind his long wavy brown hair. The waves of brown were always a shield to the world for Remus, whether it be because he was embarrassed or simply wanting to hide because he was always more sheltered as a kid Remus wasn't sure.
"Agreed on that one for sure..." the small boy said sighing, "it is a lot. I'm Peter, if I forgot to mention that." he said rather quietly.
"Remus..." Remus said as he rummaged through the side pocket of his trunk, "would you like some Chocolate?" he asked, revealing a huge bar that was broken and resealed in a silver wrapper.
"Sure, thanks." Peter smiled as he took a piece of chocolate and nibbled quickly on it.
"So…" Remus began taking a piece of chocolate for himself and setting it down on the seat between the two, "Are you as nervous as I am about attending the first of school at Hogwarts?" Remus knew talking about things usually made it better but what he was honestly hoping more was that he could at least make one acquaintance, at least till he got sorted at the opening the year at Hogwarts. Having to be sorted in front of a already populated school was intimidating, since his dad had told him what would happen at the sorting, the only thing Remus didn't want was the narrative of the Sorting hat sensing the traits within him, to scare anyone away before them even got to know him.
After swallowing the last of his chocolate Peter piped "Probably more so honestly, having to fill in the shoes of the parents and all. I come from a longline of wizards and witches, most of them were pretty nifty at transfiguration…" The boy rambled on but all Remus could focus on was he had never thought about having to match up to his parents name, his father was pretty clever and his mother, a muggle, always seemed to be open to the subject Remus read about in his father's books called Divination. Remus wondered what he would be good at and if being a Half-blood would be at his disadvantage. Would having a muggle mother give him a learning or "natural" skill disadvantage in his classes. What if he wasn't as clever as his father? Surely, the charm that seemed to come from his mother would be helpful to fill the gap. These thoughts along with his other easily selfdiscrimative traits whirled inside Remus's head and the fear of his beastly trait being added into the mix of all the uncertainty.
"What is your wand made of?" The gesture of Peter's hand brought him back to his senses, as it was pointing to the handle of his wand that was tucked in the pocket of his robe and was sticking out due to how Remus was sitting against the window of the compartment
" It's Unicorn hair, a little over 10 inches, Pliable was the selling point." Remus retorted, recalling the information that the wandmaker had said. Out of all the descriptions like that of disarming and disarming... Pliable was what Remus got stuck with , easily influenced or flexible. Remus couldn't help but think that the wand was also knowing of his condition and was able to connect with that of the human side of himself and the unknowing side and capable of adapting to that one's side state of mind. Honesty all he could do was assume, what could Remus really know about wands anyway, it was a family line trade wandmaking, and not enough information was found in any of the books his dad owned.
"Sweet. I'm sure flexibility will be rather useful…" a trunk had basically flown in and hit the boys as they couldn't have possibly been seen over the height of the trunk being turned vertically rather than the proper horizontal position of any trunk.
"Oh! Sorry Mates. Didn't see you, it's just easier to get a trunk though the train this way, given all the people." a boy said popping his chin over the top of the trunk and blowing his hair out of his eyes.
"I suppose... however, seeing my trunk is bigger than me I wouldn't even try such a thing. Peter said readjusting himself and moving the best that he could out of the way.
"Ah, that would be a problem..." The boy said, pushing his trunk up against the window, completely disregarding Remus's legs, "Do you mind, my trunk wont fit up there so we can put our feet on it." Remus lifted his feet and settled them on top of the trunk. It seemed to have been used quite heavily, you could barely see the engravement of the thread that read BLACK in gold thread. The boy, rather comfortable in his surroundings of Remus and Peter, picked up Soot's cage and moved him to the middle of the suitcase as if it were merely a coffee table to set things. Soot looked rather shocked that he was being moved so easily by someone other than Remus.
"He, yours." The blacked haired boy asked Peter nodding as he spoke.
"No. Mines the older one." Peter pointed to Rigby.
"Oh, Sorry. I only assumed cause he would be easier to carry for you along with a trunk. What's his name?" The boy asked locking eyes with Remus carelessly and disregarding Peter as soon as it was clear he was mistaken on the fact of who Soot belonged to.
"Soot." Remus said sharply not really sure if he was liking the directness of the newcomer or not. He wasn't rude, just not intact of others around him. Cocky, though that was easily clear.
"Serious." the boy snarked back as if Remus had stuttered or mis-spoke.
"Yes, as if it has any reflection on you what I decided to name my …" a finger, a finger had been placed between the boy and Remus's glaring eyes, it paused the searing words Remus was about to go into.
"No. I'm sorry…" His finger turned into an open hand to Remus, "I meant I'm Sirius, Sirius Black."
