Domino City

A 15-year old boy with long slicked back black hair was strolling through the city in a casual manner. He had the appearance of someone who exercised on a regular basis. His outfit consisted of a open gray jacket with black circles as well as a pair of jeans. This young man is Ryan Walker, and his wish is to be the next King of Games.

Midway through the stroll, he accidentally bumped into a man with spiky tri-colored hair and his deck fell out of his duel disk.

"Please forgive me." Ryan bowed as a apology.

The figure noticed that he was in possession of a deck as Ryan gathered the cards off the ground.

"You're a duelist, aren't you?" The figure asked.

"Yeah, I am." Ryan answered back. "As a matter of fact, I'm on my way to the Kaiba Dome in the hopes of applying for Duel Academy."

"You don't say." The figure stated, opening a pouch on his belt and taking a card out. "Here. Why don't you take this, something tells me it belongs with you."

It was a orange-bordered monster, more specifically a small brown-furred creature.

"Uh, thanks." Ryan rubbed the back of his head in embarrassment. "Now, if you'll excuse me. Bumping into you has taken up some of my time." He informed the stranger, who gave him a thumbs up as he walked off.

After he left, Ryan heard a noise and held the card up then a bright glow was seen on his arm. Winged Kuriboh winked at him.

'What was that about?' He asked in his head. Then Ryan looked at the watch strapped on his arm and was shocked.

"NO WAY!" He screamed. This was not how he planned the day to go and sprinted to the Kaiba Dome at full speed, hoping to get there in time.

While he was making his way to the Kaiba Dome, registration was on the verge of ending.

"Alright, mark anyone else as absent." An elderly looking man with circular framed glasses said to two younger women.

"Hold on." Ryan shouted, after scaling the wall. He broke out panting. "You can consider me present."

"Your timing couldn't be better." The man held up a clipboard. "Just fill this out and walk inside."

When he finished registering, Ryan stepped inside the building and saw a few other duels in progress or wrapping up.

"Wow, looks like some tough competition." Ryan whispered to himself.

Down below, another duel was in progress.

"Alright son! You got two monsters staring you down! Do you, A, throw in the towel. B beg for mercy, or C run home to mama?" The Proctor quizzed. The teen answered. "D. None of the above!" He activated his face-down, Ring of Destruction.

"A trap!"

The teen smiled. "Yes. When Ring of Destruction is activated, we take damage from the attack of the destroyed monster." Ring of Destruction was placed around Vorse Raider's neck as it was destroyed. The teen survived but the proctor wasn't as lucky.

The teen: 1300

The proctor: 0000

The teen wins the duel

"Clever move applicant, welcome to the academy." The proctor said, impressed. The teen bowed saying, "Thank you, oh wise proctor." As the holograms disappeared, a kid said, "Guess the stories about him being a whiz kid were true huh Chazz?"

"He's a punk, we went to duel prep school for three years. But they'll learn for themselves. The hard way. The Chazz Princeton way." Chazz smirked.

Back with the blue-haired boy Ryan replied, "That guy did great."

"Yeah that's Bastion Misawa, he got a perfect score on his entrance exam."

"That's impressive."

"My name is Syrus Truesdale, I have a thing with test anxiety and I have no idea how I passed my exam." Syrus told him in a sad tone.

"Well, good job. I'll be in once I pass my exam."

"Wait, you haven't dueled yet?"

"No, is that a problem."

Syrus said. "Well, I heard that Bastion's was supposed to be the last duel."

"Hmm, that is a problem." Ryan acknowledged to himself.

"Looks like we've got some good candidates this year."

"Indeed."

One of them wasn't paying attention. Dr. Crowler. He was beginning to leave when the man in the black suit told him, "I'm sorry to interrupt but one final applicant arrived for his exam, Mr. Crowler."

Dr. Crowler's eye twitched, "Did you just call me Mister."

The man was taken aback, "Oh I'm new here Mrs..."

"I have a PHD in dueling, I've earned the title Doctor, thank you. Now tell him to come back next year." Dr. Crowler interrupted.

The others weren't happy with that.

"Oh come on Dr. Crowler we have time for another one."

"Yes let's give this applicant a shot."

"He was just a little late, that's all."

"LATE IS RUDE!" Dr. Crowler shouted, slamming his hands on the desk startling everyone around him, upset his coworkers were even considering giving this applicant a shot. He said, "I don't have time for slackers!" His phone rang and he answered, "Hello, who is-"

"It's Sheppard."

"Ah Chancellor Sheppard." Dr. Crowler replied, his tone instantly changing.

"Just seeing how things are going, Crowler. We don't want a repeat of last year." That made Dr. Crowler flinch. "When you cut a third of the student applicants for a stupid reason. What was it, calling you by the wrong title. Whatever, just make sure everyone gets a chance to duel."

"Absolutely." Dr. Crowler said. He closed his phone and muttered, "Furry chinned windbag." He then thought, "Doesn't he realize we have enough talent-less individuals at this academy. But he's in charge, and if he wants me to duel. Fine."

"Excuse me, I have business to attend to." Dr. Crowler said, walking off.

A proctor said, "Wait Dr. Crowler, who will his opponent be and what deck shall we use."

"Let me worry about that." Dr. Crowler said.

"You did great there, Bastion." Bastion raised his head to see Ryan approaching him.

"Thank you."

"From what I've seen, you're probably the second best duelist among the applicants."

"Second best?" He quizzed curiously. "Then who's first?"

"Oh, I am." Ryan gestured to himself.

"Ryan Walker, report to exam field 4." His name was called out over a PA system.

"Now, if you'll excuse me." He went down to the floor to greet his opponent.

Syrus remarked, "He sounds confident."

"He'll need it." Bastion frowned. "That's his opponent."

After he reached the platform he rose up, and looked around. "Alright test time!" He looked and saw Dr. Crowler on the other end as he asked, "So son, your name?"

"Ryan Walker."

"Well, Ryan Walker." Crowler mocked him. "I'm Dr. Vellian Crowler, Department Chair of Techniques at Duel Academy."

"Really, you don't look like it."

"Duel Vest on!" Dr. Crowler said as he activated the Duel Disk on his coat while Ryan looked looked on as Dr. Crowler hummed a tune and caught five cards that were ejected from his duel vest. "How did you manage to obtain a duel disk like that?"

"Oh a lot of hard work, and extremely high marks!" Dr. Crowler mused taking his question as a compliment.

'But you have to get into the Academy first, and I'm not letting that happen.' Dr. Crowler thought smiling wickedly.

Ryan opened one of the six boxes on his belt and inserted a deck into his duel disk.

"LET'S DUEL!"

Ryan: 4000

Crowler: 4000

Ryan 1st turn

"For my first move I summon Elemental Hero Sparkman in attack mode." After placing the card on his duel disk, a yellow and gold armored warrior stood upright. "After that, I play a face-down."

"That will end my turn."

Crowler's 1st turn

Deciding to question his solution later he drew, as he thought, 'After all, since I'm using my own deck and not one of the test decks, I'll fail this brat and send him home in no time.' He looked over his head and saw it was Ancient Gear Golem, Confiscation, Statue of the Wicked, Heavy Storm and Emes the Infinity with his newly drawn card being another Statue of the Wicked.

"Okay, for this first move, I'll start nice and easy, I activate Confiscation!"

Confiscation

Normal Spell Card

Pay 1000 life points. Look at your opponent's hand, select 1 card in it and discard that card.

"What are you doing to discard?" He asked.

Images of his hand appeared as his points dropped. (Dr. Crowler: 3000) But he's not worried as he looked and said, "I remember these from when I was a beginner." Tyson didn't respond to the comment. "Hmm now which one will I get rid of."

"Monster Reborn to the graveyard!" The image of his card dissolved before he sent it to the graveyard. "Next, I place two cards face down and activate Heavy Storm!"

Heavy Storm

Normal Spell Card

Destroy all Spell and Trap cards on the field

"This spell destroys every other spell and trap on the field."

After that fierce winds appeared and destroyed Mirror Force, Bottomless Trap Hole, and the two Statue of the Wicked.

"Destroying your own cards, seems like a waste."

"Don't speak out of turn, young scholar." Dark fogs appeared as he looked around. "Fog. What's up?"

"Nothing. Yet." Two gold snake-like monsters appeared.

Fiend/Token

ATK: 1000

DEF: 1000

Special Summoned with the effect of Statue of the Wicked

"But that's going to change." Dr. Crowler smirked.

Everyone was shocked, except Syrus who asked. "Will someone tell me what happened?" From what he heard Traps don't summon Tokens. "Those traps Dr. Crowler set were Statue of the Wicked. When they're destroyed by a effect, two Wicked Fiend Tokens are summoned. That's why he used Heavy Storm." Bastion explained.

"A card that strong can't be in a test deck. Crowler's using his own." One of Chazz's cronies said.

The other asked Chazz. "Then it's over no one can beat a expert like Dr. Crowler right Chazz?"

"I think I'm gonna enjoy seeing Crowler wipe the floor with this kid, I just wish they did the same thing with every other second-rate duelists that applied at the Academy."

"What a snob. Bullying some kid with their best cards." A sandy-blonde haired girl said disgusted by Dr. Crowler had out. A dark-blue haired boy next to her said. "You're too soft Alexis. I hope we're able to see that legendary monster Crowler has stored in his deck."

Once the smoke cleared up Dr. Crowler asked. "Ready for your next lesson?"

"Only if you are."

Dr. Crowler grunted seeing he wasn't afraid. Aw well, if that move didn't scare him, the next one would. "Very well. I sacrifice my two Wicked Tokens to summon Ancient Gear Golem!"

Everyone awed as a huge and rusty robot golem emerged from the ground looking hollow, and had one red eye.

"There it is! The legendary rare card!" Alexis cried, seeing it.

"We'll soon find out why it's so legendary." The dark-blue haired boy, now known as Zane said.

With his golem by his side Dr Crowler told Ryan "Now now I hope you're not too scared of my legendary Ancient Gear Golem."

ATK: 3000

DEF: 3000

Cannot be Special Summoned. If this card attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict piercing battle damage to your opponent. If this card attacks, your opponent cannot activate any Spell/Trap cards until the end of the Damage Step

"Why would I be scared." Ryan repeated.

The lack of fear shocked the audience as Syrus cried, "Either he's brave or nuts."

"He's staring down that legendary rare monster like he doesn't care. I guess youth and inexperience have benefits after all, huh Alexis?" The boy asked.

Alexis brushed it off, "Give it a rest Zane. At least he's got some back bone."

"There won't be much left after this."

Dr. Crowler laughed like he heard a joke before ordering, "Golem attack! Mechanized Melee!" The golem gave out a punch as Sparkman tensed before it was destroyed.

"Aw man, his monster didn't stand a chance, it's attack was too low. This isn't looking good!" Syrus cried, shaking his head.

"Things would have been worse." Bastion informed the light blue haired boy. "When Ancient Gear Golem attacks a monster in defense position, the difference between it's attack and the defending monster's defense points are dealt to the opponent as damage. That's why it was summoned in attack position." Ryan grunted as the fist struck him.

Dr. Crowler laughed as he caught him shaking and said, "Oh don't feel bad, this is the top dueling school in the country. Some people just aren't..." He slowed down as the teen stood upright. "Cut...out...for..."

"What's so funny." Ryan asked, as he righted himself.

That caught Crowler off-guard, as said doctor though angrily, 'Can't he understand, I will not allow him to pass this exam or mock my deck.'

Ryan: 2600

Dr. Crowler: 3000

Ryan's 2nd turn

He noticed Crowler's expression, 'What's up with him, did I make him mad? Oh well.'

He was just about to draw a card, when he heard a faint noise. He drew the card and looked at it.

'Winged Kuriboh?'

(Begin flashback)

"I have a feeling it will be more useful for you than me."

(End flashback)

Then, he briefly noticed the card wink at him.

"Okay, I summon Winged Kuriboh in defense mode." Jaden said as he summoned the card before setting down another card face. "And I'll place one card face down. Not bad, huh?"

Winged Kuriboh: 200 DEF. Level 1.

Crowler laughed. "No, not bad, but you must understand that I am a master tactician. A Kuriboh to me is rather pedestrian. Even one with wings, it's defense points you see, it's defense points are still no match for Ancient Gear Golem." Crowler said mockingly. "It's a textbook mistake, don't feel bad. Now let's proceed."

Crowler then drew his next card from his deck and being his turn. "With the legendary Ancient Gear Golem, attack that Kuriboh with Mechanized Melee."

Just like before, Ancient Gear Golem reeled back it's arm and struck Winged Kuriboh with its fist. However, unlike last time Ryan's life points hadn't decreased.

"Check your gear, your Life Points haven't changed." Crowler said.

"You're right." He informed Dr. Crowler. "The turn Winged Kuriboh is destroyed, I take no damage from attacks."

"What do you know, a technique even the Doctor didn't know." Alexis said.

"No one can be expected to know every technique, Alexis. Especially one as obscured as that." Zane said.

"Yeah, well that kid sure knew it." Alexis said amused.

Ryan placed Winged Kuriboh into the graveyard.

"Fine, fine, I guess your lame little monster saved you there." Crowler mocked.

"Hey, don't mock him." Ryan glared at Crowler.

"Oh, yes, I forget how attached you new recruits get to your monsters. I'm sorry." Crowler mocked.

"You soon will be, because this now activates. Hero Signal." His face down card opened and then showed a light in the sky shaped like letter H. "Now I special summon a level 4 or lower Hero from my deck."

Elemental Hero Burstinatrix: 1200 ATK. Level 3.

"My turn." Ryan said as he drew his next card which revealed the Skyscraper Field Spell. He then looked at the remaining cards in his hands. "Alright Winged Kuriboh, payback time. Here goes nothing. I activate Polymerization, fusing Avian and Burstinatrix." He said as the two fuse together in a spiral before his new monster appeared. Come forth Elemental Hero Flame Wingman. Your monster better get ready." He said as a green man with a red dragon's head on his right arm and one feathered wing on the left side of his back appeared on his field.

Elemental Hero Flame Wingman: 2100 ATK. Level 6.

"Well, what do you think?" He asked. Crowler just laughed.

"I think you're dueling very well for an amateur." Crowler said sarcastically. "But next time try playing a monster that has more attack points than what is already out."

"What does he mean?" Syrus asked.

"He means that Wingman's attack points are no match for his Golem's 3000." Bastion said. "Shame too, because when the Wingman destroys a monster, that monster's attack points are dealt as damage to the owner."

"Wait, you mean their deducted right out of his life points?" Syrus asked before sighing. "That would have been a great way for him to to turn things around."

Meanwhile back at the duel it was Ryan's turn, and Crowler already thinks he had won the duel before it's over.

"All right, young scholar, I don't mean to rush you but I'm a busy man. Are you done yet." Crowler asked, growing tired of this applicant's persistence.

"Not yet. And I'm aware Flame Wingman isn't strong enough to take out Ancient Gear Golem, so I play this Skyscraper."

After he activated his Field Spell, several large buildings appear around him and Crowler. Soon their whole duel field completely changed and were in the middle of a city. At the top of one of the building was Flame Wingman.

"Attack Ancient Gear Golem." Flame Wingman dove off the building he was on and headed right for Ancient Gear Golem.

"Fine with me, bring him on. This silly little Skyscraper Field Spell hasn't lowered my Golem's Attack Points by one point." Crowler said arrogantly.

"You're right." Ryan nodded in agreement. "When a Elemental Hero battles a stronger monster, it gains 1000 attack points."

Elemental Hero Flame Wingman: 3100 ATK.

Flame Wingman covered itself in flames and crashed itself into Ancient Gear Golem, resulting in a huge explosion after collision and defeating it.

Dr. Crowler: 2900 LP.

"It can't be, he was my very best card." Crowler said in disbelief.

"And now Flame Wingman's ability kicks in. Ancient Gear Golem's 3000 attack points are taken out from your life points."

"No way." Crowler said in disbelief. When he looked up, he sees his Golem was about to fall apart on him. He tried to get away but the pieces of Ancient Gear Golem collapsed right on top of him and lost the last of his Life Points.

Dr. Crowler: 0 LP.

The duel was over and Ryan was the winner, much to the shock of the other students.

"Impossible, there is no way this delinquent could defeat me." Crowler said as he narrowed his eyes.

Up in the seats, Chazz and his friends were shocked from what they saw. Dr. Crowler and his legendary monster was defeated and this duelist wasn't even a student.

"It must be dumb luck." Chazz said with widened eyes, shocked from he saw and refused to believe it. "No way Crowler could lose to some flunky."

"That kid's got a future here, wow." Alexis said with a smile.

"Alright!" Syrus cried, cheering for his victory.

'Nice, I need some competition.' Bastion said, watching him wave to the audience.

Just a brief A/N, I'll be introducing one of my OC's other decks in the next chapter.
