Kyle Hyde and his friends John Phoenix and Phoenix Wright were having lunch at Lucky's
"Hello Mr. Hyde" said Claire "Our special blend today is coffee made from beans and water"
Kyle sipped "Delicious, nice job Claire" even though she didn't make it, she was just a waitress
But suddenly a gun said "Ah-choo!"
Everyone stood up
"That sounded like a gunshot" said Sydney
"And it came from somewhere upstairs!" said John Phoenix (his ears were very good)
So John, Kyle, and Phoenix ran into the lobby
"Hi" said Tony. He was stealing from the vending machine.
Then they ran up to the second floor (the elevator was broken)
"Mr. Hyde, what's going on?" asked Frank. "I heard something very similar to a gunshot just now. I demand an explanation."
"Frank, go back to your room" said Kyle "Its dangerous"
"OK" Frank wheeled himself back to his apartment
Then they ran to the third floor
"John Phoenix!" cried Betty. "Why haven't you returned my calls?"
"Probably because you're a dime-store floozy" said Kyle "Now go back to your room, Betty, we have a situation."
"Fine" said Betty and she went back into her apartment
So then they ran to the fourth floor and found the dead body outside the fire door. The gun hole was still fresh and smoking.
"It's Charles!" said Kyle "He's been shot!"
"Who could have done this?" asked Phoenix Wright.
"Whoever it was must be a tenant here" said Kyle "Because I keep the doors locked to stop strangers from getting in"
Kyle mentally went down the list of suspects.
Obviously, Kyle, John, Wright, Claire, and Sydney were innocent because they could confirm each other's alibis.
It couldn't have been Tony, because there's no way he could have made it from the fourth floor to the lobby in the few seconds that had elapsed between them hearing the gunshot and running out of the cafe.
Dylann, Marie, and Will White no longer lived in the building, so that left them out.
Frank? He was in a wheelchair now, so he couldn't have climbed the stairs.
And Betty? Kyle didn't think so. She was just a weak woman, and he knew from his experience as a detective that the bullet hole had come from a big gun, so big that firing it would have made her wrists fall off.
Wait a minute... Something lit up in Kyle's head.
"HOLD ON A MINUTE" he said. "Why is Frank's room suddenly on the second floor? He's supposed to be on the third! Betty's room is also on the wrong floor."
"There's only one possibility" said John Phoenix. "Someone must have switched the second floor with the third floor. And the only person who could perform such an amazing feat (besides me) is a magician! And the only magician living in this building is TRUCY WRIGHT!"
So they went to Phoenix's apartment on the third floor (which was now the second floor) but it was locked.
"Trucy!" Phoenix banged on the door. "Open up!"
"No!"
Kyle Hyde took out his keys and tried to unlock the door but Trucy jabbed at the keyhole with a paperclip and knocked the key out
"Damn it! Cut the crap kid!" screamed Kyle
"No!"
John Phoenix punched a hole through the door and pulled Trucy out
"Trucy you switched the floors didn't you" said Phoenix
"FINE I ADMIT IT but some guy I don't know made me do it"
Kyle was taken aback. "What? But who could that be?"
Phoenix presented the profiles of everyone they met so far but no dice.
"It must be the one person whose whereabouts have been heretofore unaccounted for" said John Phoenix "Louis Denonno!"
"But John Nile murdered him" objected Phoenix
"Ha someone as foolish as yourself might think so, uncle, but observe." John Phoenix opened the court record from Kyle's trial and pulled a piece of electrical tape off of Louie's last name, and the last name wasn't "Denonno", it was "from Pikmin 2".
"So you see Louie was never dead" explained John "It was just someone else with his first name"
Kyle turned and saw Louie peeping out of the door across the hall. Louie slammed the door and locked it.
"That's the guy!" said Trucy.
"Louie open up!" Kyle banged on the door
"No way, man! As long as you sons of bitches think I shot him I'm not coming out!"
"Louie! If you didn't do it, then how come you know it was a 'he' that was shot?"
Louie was silent for a moment. "Because... I'm being framed!"
"That doesn't answer my question!"
"Screw you Hyde! OK, OK, Charles was supposed to come to my room to help me record this, uh, movie I'm working on... Basically it's about my adventures at hotel dusk. I was gonna play myself and Charles was gonna play you. When I heard the gunshot and then he didn't show up, I knew he must have been shot."
"You think that pansy could play me?" asked Kyle. "Louie, you ARE as dumb as you look."
"Besides, Trucy said you forced her to switch the floors," said Phoenix. "Only a CRIMINAL would make such a request"
"SCREW HER TOO! I have an alibi! Here, look." He opened the door and played a videotape for them. It showed Louie practicing his lines.
"SEE," he said, "I was recording myself for the last hour, I didn't shoot anyone!" He kicked them out of the room.
They stood in the hallway.
"Damn what now?" asked Kyle, scratching the back of his head.
John Phoenix smirked. "Well, now that it's confirmed Louie is innocent, we're left with only one possible suspect!"
Instead of waiting for their foolish minds to reach the right conclusion, John Phoenix carried Kyle and his uncle under his arms and sprinted to Frank's apartment and crashed through the door.
"Goodness" said Frank "Mr. Hyde you'd better have a good explanation for this"
"He doesn't, but I do" said John Phoenix. He pointed at Frank. "Frank, you are Charles' killer!"
Frank remained calm. "Perhaps you didn't notice, Mr. Phoenix, but I am disabled. Care to explain how I could have killed poor Charles on the fourth floor?"
"Easy. You didn't have to climb any stairs to kill Charles. The way I figure the crime happened, is this. You had Charles meet you need the stairs on the third floor on some pretext. Then you pulled out your gun and just shot him!"
"And how, pray tell, did I move the corpse to the fourth floor?"
"Simple. You pushed his corpse DOWN the stairs, to the second floor! That way, when Trucy switched the second and third floors, the sudden jolt caused the body to fly up and land on the FOURTH floor!"
"Ha!" Frank looked away. "I'm sorry, but I couldn't help but overhear your conversation with that girl earlier. I believe she identified LOUIS as the one who forced her to perform this trick."
"OBJECTION shut up. You just wore a Louie mask."
The corners of Frank's mouth twisted into the semblance of a smile. "Very good, Mr. Phoenix. But aren't you going to explain how I disposed of the murder weapon?"
"That's the one thing I haven't figured out yet."
Frank reached under his butt and pulled out his gun. "Too bad for you." His pulled the trigger.
"KYLE NO!" Louie ran into the room and dived in front of Kyle and took the bullet.
"Oh my god" whispered Frank as Phoenix Wright and John Phoenix disarmed him.
"Cough cough *spits up blood*" said Louie on the ground "Goodbye dad..." He died.
Phoenix turned to John. "John, you're Louie's dad?" John smacked him for being dumb.
"No... I am" said Frank "And now... my boy is gone"
"Yeah, now you're practically a serial killer, gramps," said Kyle. "Why did you kill Charles?"
*close up on Frank's face, Silent Tears starts playing*
"Because he was actually working for John Nile. He stole my DNA while I was sleeping and discovered I was Louis's father. Charles threatened to tell Louis unless I handed over all my investigatory files related to John Nile. In return he would give my DNA back. We met at the stairs to make the trade, but I... I couldn't let him have my research, so instead I shot him. But none of it mattered in the end." He cried two old man tears. "Because Louis found out anyway. And... I shot him..."
Before they could stop him, Frank crashed through the window on his wheelchair and was impaled on a fire hydrant. The fire hydrant exploded and a geyser of water flung Frank's wheelchair corpse into the clouds, never to be seen again.
Kyle rested his head on his arm and stared out the other window at the city. After all these years, it seemed Cape West still had its secrets. For a moment he felt overwhelmed. Would he ever be able catch John Nile, the man who had murdered his parents?
Then Kyle saw John Phoenix, a dim reflection in the window, and was reassured.
With John Phoenix by his side, Kyle Hyde knew that one day he'd find the light at the end of the tunnel.
Kyle smiled.
