Sayu lurks beneath a cherry tree.

The harsh wind lifts strands of her hair and she has the bizarre suspicion that to an outside observer, she looks like a wind-ruffled pelican, with her cheeks puffed out in frustration. Loose cherry blossom petals circle her in waves.

If she was anything like the heroines in her favorite mangas, this moment would look poetic. Instead, Sayu shivers through the wind and eyes the impending grey clouds above her head. She's always been impatient, more willing to simply act than to act analytical.

This time, she doesnt think her mom will be too mad if she comes home empty-handed. After all, Sayu's been waiting outside of the metro station closest to her apartment for over fifteen minutes. Even pacing around is getting old.

She pulls her scarf tightly against her neck and staves off a shiver.

Finally, Sayu's impatient, wandering eyes whisk through the crowd of up and coming commuters. There, striding in the middle of the pack is a composed, young man.

It's her brother, of course, shining golden as ever even on the darkest days. His figure, like a knight in shining armor, cuts through her gloom. Soichiro Yagami fashioned Light out of love, duty, familial expectations, and pride. Even his unhurried and confident stride reflects this.

Although Light doesn't bend so much as he gracefully acquiesces to their dad's sense of justice that their father pushes onto him is enough of the Yagami legacy; Sayu doesn't feel that she needs any to be spared.

Sayu observes this natural self-assurance, one of her many symbols of home - as familiar as the smell of mom's cooking or her dad's aftershave when he arrives late from work and checks on her - with mischief alight in her eyes. He's been getting coccky recently. She can see this, because she's as enamoured with Light's perfection as the rest of the world.

Her brother is always lightning-fast and a step above the rest. He has always set the standard. Sayu knows she can only run along behind him with the false hope of catching up. Determinedly, she shakes the raindrops off of her jacket and pounces.

"Light!"

She tackles his back and her turns, an automatic reaction. Light's outstretched arms barely catch Sayu's body as she knocks into his chest. Sayu bounces back, unharmed and laughing.

He rolls his eyes and Sayu prepares for a familiar lecture and a chiding tone.

"Sayu, please be careful. One of these days, you're going to get hurt," He takes a second look at her, giving her grinning form a once-over. "Or hurt me."

She nods her head dutifully before making it clear that she doesn't care with a bright grin that outshines the cloudy day and threat of rain.

"Whatever you say, Light."

Her brother pulls his eyes sky-ward, as if something in the heavens will help him in anyway. Vexed, he pulls his sister's short form to him and they continue walking home from the metro station, shivering through the wind that penetrates their skin. Light and Sayu look their most similar when both of their noses are the same shade of wind-blistered red.

"Let's get home quickly. I don't want to miss dinner and worry mom."

Sayu sticks her tongue out at him in disgruntlement.

"Too late, I've been out here waiting for you for forever. You should really answer your phone next time."

Light gently cuffs her upside the head. And Sayu smears her wet, water-logged sleeve against his backpack.

"What took you so long anyway?"

"I had some business to take care of. It won't happen again, so don't worry too much about staying out of the rain."

Light pulls his sister close, opening up a generic black umbrella with one hand. Droplets of rain pound against the fabric as the Yagami siblings give up on their leisurely pace and begin their outright run home.

In a year and one month, Light will watch L die in his arms and savor the look on L's face for years. Earlier today, he looked Rey Penber in the eyes as he suffocated to death on his knees, as if praying for supplication or forgiveness in front of a wrathful god. And Light does not believe in coincidence.

Light is clay, cast into a mold of his family's making. Kira's sense of justice, his duty to the world, is a set of distorted values sharpened by society's ill will towards the law-abiding citizens that occupy it. He is a revolutionary in the making and, soon, a leader of men.

Light thinks about the leather briefcase stored in his backpack, filled with a goldmine of information. The pathway to Kira's success is being jostled around on his shoulders as he attempts to outrun the rain. Sayu let's out a bright laugh as he steps into a puddle and wets the leg of his slacks.

A smile graces his face at the sound. He laughs with her.

Right now, he is a just a boy leading his sister home. Dinner is waiting. Then, he will teach the world to reshape itself.
