A/N: Hey guys! I know I have no Business starting a new story, but this has been in my head for a while and I have so many ideas. I am so inspired. I need to write this out and let all of you guys experience it. Also, I am missing baseball. The length of the story depends on you guys whether you like it or not. Let me know what you guys think.
The fans are cheering. The stadium sounds like it's about to explode because the fans were so loud. They have been this loud since the team took the field. Fitzgerald Thomas Grant the Third leading pitcher for the LA Dodgers. Technically this was not his day of rotation, but he's been on fire and his manager Cyrus Beene has given him the go ahead for today. He was born for moments like these. Game seven. Winner takes all and punches a ticket into the World Series. He wanted to win. He wanted to win because of the fan. He wanted to win because of his teammates who deserve this.
He wanted to win because his family was all here watching him from the players family box. He wanted to win because Cassie and Tyler were watching this. He wanted to win for himself. Fitz has won anything that a baseball player could win except a championship. His time was running out. He is 42 and on his last leg of his career. They almost won three years ago but were cheated out of it by the Astros. God he hated the Astros. All this time he thought it was him who choked, but finding out the truth hurt even more. They knew all of the pitches that were coming their way. Now was the time.
They have the best roster to do so. He's been a Dodger all his life and plans to retire as one. It was for the love of the game that kept him going. His shoulder hasn't felt this well since the injury and if they win this game Fitz was confident he can lead them into the World Series. But, was it worth missing out in everything else in life?
Most importantly he wanted to win because of Olivia Pope. God he missed her. Letting her go was the worst mistake of his life and Fitz has made plenty. If he weren't so caught up in baseball. If he wasn't so caught up in other women. Fitz has never cheated on Olivia, but he has been out with his teammates and they have had women draping all over them. It bothered Olivia so much but he never did anything to ease her worries. Now thinking back he was so shitty to her. Fitz was so caught up in the limelight.
He knew he had the looks and it worked towards his favor. Fitzgerald Grant was a 6'3, tattooed, a head full of brown curls, 8 packed sexy man and he knew it. He was a playboy and has been all of his life.
Start Flashback
Olivia was his chance to put it all behind and start fresh. After all this therapy he's learned that he was scared. Scared about commitment because of his ACEs. Adverse childhood experiences. Fitz was adopted by the Grant family and before he lived a rough life. His biological parents were drug addicts and dealers. They only cared about themselves. His original name was Anthony Goodman, that was changed when the Grant's adopted him.
Fitz(Anthony)''s father was a former soldier in the Army. Being in battle messed him up and he turned to drugs and got his wife hooked. Fitz(Anthony) was abused as a child because his father had terrible PTSD and took it out on his son. Till this day he still has the scars of his biological father's doings. The man was sick in the head. Which is why Fitz had so many tattoos because he was ashamed of his scars. He thought the scares made him ugly. Fitz's biological mother overdosed and Fitz witnessed it all. It was traumatic for a 6 year old to witness all of that.
It wasn't until his father was in a shootout with the police and got arrested they found the dead body of his mother. Fitz(Anthony) was hiding in the closet and was scared to death. When he was brought to the hospital for a check up and social services to take him into the system Fitzgerald Thomas Grant the Second aka Big Jerry was visiting his brother who was a doctor at the hospital. He instantly fell in love with the boy and instantly called for his wife. When Adele arrived at the hospital she did as well.
Fitz(Anthony) spent only two weeks in foster care before the Grant's were able to adopt him. Big Jerry was a prominent Senator from California and Adele was a Professor at CalTech. For the first year he was adopted he did not speak one word to anyone. The only person he would listen to was his father. Fitz(Anthony) followed Big Jerry like a little puppy. Adele would have trouble with Fitz when Big Jerry would need to go to D.C when the Senate was in session. It got so bad that he would have to take Fitz with him to D.C. Fitz did not let Big Jerry out of his sight.
It wasn't until his sister Amy was born Fitz spoke a word. He held and said "Beautiful". It shocked the hell out of Big Jerry and Adele, they cried of joy. One because their baby girl was born and the other was because Fitz(Anthony) finally spoke.
"Anthony you spoke….." Big Jerry spoke to his son.
"No." Fitz(Anthony) answered.
"No to what son?"
"NO! I HATE MY NAME!" Fitz(Anthony) screamed and it caused Amy to cry. Big Jerry took him out of the room.
"Why don't you like your name, son?"
"Father was bad! He hurt me! I hate my name!" Big Jerry was shocked to hear that. He's been thinking about this since they signed the adoptions papers.
"Anthony…..How would you like to be named after me? Fitzgerald Thomas Grant the Third….?" Fitz smiled and nodded. From that day on Anthony was referred to as Fitz by everyone.
Having Amy was a blessing towards Adele, because it brought her a relationship with her son. Fitz was very protective of Amy and Adele. Their relationship improved. Fitz was still a boy of few words. He was more of an observer. His therapist suggested he needed an outlet to let out all that aggression he hoarded inside of him. So, Big Jerry enrolled Fitz into sports and boy did he thrive. Everything he touched he was good at. By the age of 12 he was already getting recruited by high schools for Baseball, Football and basketball.
Fitz didn't start to speak much until high school. He was very popular and enjoyed what popularity brought to him. Big Jerry and Adele worried about their son constantly because he was a playboy. It was his luck that he did not get any girl pregnant. It was also because Fitz was focused on sports. He had three loves when it came to sports, but Baseball trumped the other two so he decided to pursue baseball. He got a full ride to anywhere he wanted to go for College and decided to attend UCLA.
Fitz was very close to his family. Big Jerry and Adele had three more children and they all loved Fitz. Amy was closer to Fitz because the other two were twins. They also had a good age difference, but adored Fitz. To Fitz the Grants gave him life. He is who he is today because of his parents and siblings. Sometimes when they would go on vacations people would ask if Fitz was Big Jerry's brother or if he came from the first marriage.
Big Jerry was tall, blond hair and blue eyed. While Adele was African American. Her parents came from South Africa to get away from aparttide. So all of Fitz's siblings had a hint of African American in them while he stuck out like a sore thumb. Although it never bothered him or caused anything in their family. Family is family no matter blood related for not. Big Jerry always reminded his son that he is loved equally as the others. It took a lot of therapy, but Fitz had improved so much. Fitz was drafted out of his freshmen year to the Dodgers. He was the number one pick. From then on the rest of history.
End of Flashback
Coming out of his thoughts he read the sign from his pitcher and got ready to throw the ball. They were facing the Giants and he had no hate for them. Some of his teammates from UCLA played on the team. Both of their teams deserved to move on to the World Series. Just like that it was strike one. Soon the first inning was over and it was a one, two and three out for Fitz. The crowd was loving it. As he sat down on the dug out it made him think about Olivia again. She and her twins were leaving for Spain today.
Tyler was exceptional at soccer and Olivia has decided to move the whole family, along with Tyler as he begins his training at Real Madrid Academy. If Fitz would have fought harder she would have stayed, but he didn't. He was so cold towards her when she told him she was moving to Spain. The truth was that Tyler would have been fine in Spain because her brother works for the team so he would take care of him there, but Olivia wanted a fresh start. Everything reminded her of Fitz and they haven't spoken to each other in 6 months.
She was the love of his life and all of a sudden his vision was clear. He chose Olivia, Cassie and Tyler. They made him happy. They were his eternal happiness, while baseball was a temporary happiness. How could he be such an idiot? The children adored him and loved to see him with his mom. Even after the multiple breakups, the children always hoped their mother would get back together with Fitz. When Olivia and Fitz were together they came to every home game. Cassie and Olivia were there more often because Tyler had his soccer obligations.
Fitz performed his best when Olivia was there. He shook his head at what an idiot he has been. All because he was scared. Being apart from his Livvie for six months hurt. Sure, there were little break ups, but his one hurt the most. She wanted nothing to do with him. He brought it all to himself. God he was so nasty to her when he injured his hand and shoulder. He let his self pity win and it cost him big time. As the second inning started Fitz ran to the mound. As he was about to throw his pitch he thought back on when he met Olivia and her twins.
Start Flashback
He was on his morning run and afterwards decided to stop by a cafe. Soon he sat down with his pastry and coffee. Fitz lowered his hat lower because he knew how crazy fans can get. It walks a beautiful woman with her two children. She was wearing a beautiful peach sundress and wedges. It made her look like an angel. He watched as they were ordered and the woman reached for her wallet.
She seemed to be struggling finding her wallet. He was close enough to hear her sigh and look down on her children.
"Sorry guys I forgot my wallet…..I'll just make us breakfast when we get home….."
"But mom this is our Saturday tradition!" Cassie said as she was getting upset. Fitz couldn't stand by and watch the children not get their pastry. He got up and went to the register.
"Amanda, put it on my card please." He handed the card to the girl and looked at the woman.
"We don't need your charity sir." Olivia hissed. She was tired of people pitying her because he was a single mother of two. She is a well of architect, but very forgetful sometimes.
"Oh no ma'am….It's not charity at all…..It just broke my heart that you and your children wouldn't be able to taste these delicious pastries….." Fitz gave Olivia his signature smile.
With that Olivia gave him a small smile and responded.
"Thank you….I didn't mean to be rude of your kindness….It's just so many people have assumed just because I am a single mother that I can't afford things….."
"No need for apologies, I get it…..Would you and the children like to join me…..?" Olivia was about to respond no, but Cassie and Tyler have been tugging at her dresses since Fitz walked up to them.
They knew this was Fitzgerald Grant the star pitcher for the LA Dodgers.
"MOM YOU HAVE TO SAY YES!" The children begged their mom.
"Okay I guess we can join you….." The children cheered. Fitz waited to get their order and he took them to a more remote part of the cafe. There he took off his hat and ran his hand through his hair.
"OH MY GOD! IT IS HIM!" The twins said in union. Fitz laughed and blushed a little. Hearing the children's response to him was relife.
"Mom how do you not know who this is?" Cassie asked her mom as she is still starstruck. She loved baseball and the Dodgers was her favorite team.
"He's Fitzgerald Thomas Grant the Third mom!" Tyler said to his mom.
"Oh my god! I knew you look familiar! No wonder why my children were eager to eat with you. Usually they don't like to share me because I work too much during the weekdays." Olivia blushed as she looked up at Fitz's piercing blue eyes.
"And what is it that you do Miss….."
"Pope, Olivia Pope…..But, you can just call me Olivia."
"Only if you call me Fitz…."
"Deal….."
"How can I ever repay you for this kind gesture…?" Olivia smiled at Fitz and it made his heart melt.
"Go out with me!" Fitz exclaimed and the children chocked on her hot chocolate. Fitzgerald Grant was asking their mother out.
"YES! SHE'LL LOVE TO!" The children answered for her. Olivia laughs and blushes.
"Sooooo is that a yes from the lady…?" Fitz smiled with hope. Olivia blushed and nodded.
End of Flashback
Fitz has been battling with this hitter in the second inning. All he could think about was Olivia. He was 3 and 2 with the hitter. Stephen gave him the signal and Fitz shook his head. Then Stepen put up another sign and Fitz liked that one. He got ready and released the pitch. Just like that the Empire yelled "OUT" and just like that the inning was over.
