"And that's when the bandit leapt on top of the carriage and stole the Prince's jewels, and the Prince chased the thief on horseback through the treacherous forest."
Reyna was trying to listen as Henry read the story to the Charmings' newest addition, but her heart wasn't in it as she sat in the booth next to Ruby, glaring at table in her annoyance. She ground her teeth as tried to tune out their playful banter, envy rising in her gut, something that she knew better, after dealing with Zelena, than to get involved with.
She was drawn back into the conversation when Ruby dug her elbow into her side and Killian's voice broke though her stupor. "King Midas's daughter? The man who can turn anything in gold? Why would you leave that opportunity?"
Emma slapped his arm, sending him a look, and the others at the table looked amused. She snorted humorlessly; leave it to Killian to be insensitive in the face of love. At the thought of love, her anger returned and she clenched her fists as she crossed her arms over her chest. "Hey!" Snow shouted in offense. She stopped listening again, thinking of her own problems.
She and Peter both missed Neverland, but it seemed that his staying here was keeping him and the island alive, and if he returned, so would his curse. Of course, they agreed that they were much too selfish, so they found a farmhouse out in the forest and made it their own. Many of the Lost Boys had come to live with them as well.
She didn't particularly like anyone in the town, especially after all they had put her and Peter through and how they continued to treat him, but it had nothing on Peter's hatred of its residents. She knew that even if he grew to tolerate them that he wouldn't actually like their company, not after everything they had done to tear them apart. It also didn't help that Rumplestiltskin, his younger brother, and Killian, her older brother, were back in their lives again.
She was a little more lenient and forgiving, and she truly enjoyed Ruby's and Henry's company– she didn't spend much time with him, not wanting to push Peter too much (though a jealous Peter was a sexy Peter)– and David and Mary-Margaret seemed to actually care for her, though that made her very uncomfortable. So, when Zelena had threatened their home, and by extension Peter's health, she refused to sit in the side lines. What made her angrier was how Peter had reacted the previous day and was still acting.
The two appeared in the farmhouse immediately after Zelena was stopped, Peter's jaw clenched in his fury with her. Some of the Lost Boys hung around, and Felix stood up from his spot on the couch, looking concerned. Peter didn't spare a glance as he dragged her into their bedroom, waving his hand to ensure that they had complete privacy.
"What were you thinking?" he calmly spoke, his voice low and with a dangerous edge. She met his glare head on, not bothered by his anger, which she had expected. "I think that I was trying to protect my family," she said, defending herself venomously. He really didn't have a reason to be angry, unless you counted the fact that he was just a prat.
"You could have gotten yourself killed! Rumple wouldn't have been able to stop it if he wanted to– which he wouldn't have to get back at me! She just had to say the words and I wouldn't have been fast enough!"
"But I didn't! And you didn't have to be fast enough! It was a risk I was willing to take to ensure your safety," she said, trying to keep her temper in check, unlike Peter. She was teetering on a fine edge, ever since she had gotten her memories back, and her emotions were always all over the place.
"I told you not to mess with the witch! I told you that I would handle it and you were to stay out of the way! I t-"
That statement set her off. "You're right! Why not just sit back and let others fight all my battles because you told me to! Your idea of handling it is making sure she doesn't hurt me or you, and everyone else would have been fair game! Well I don't want to live that way! I wanted to do this, I knew you would be angry, but it was necessary."
"It wasn't necessary! This," he said grabbing the tops of her arms and pulling her towards him, "is all that matters to me. You didn't know what Zelena was capable of. She knew better than to mess with me or mine and you wouldn't have been in danger if you would have just listened to me!"
"I know you don't like it here, Peter, and I know that you are constantly worried that Gold or someone is going to try to use me to hurt you, but I genuinely like Henry and Ruby and I have all the Lost Boys to think about. If she won, who knows what would have happened to them. I didn't want to find out. The problem is taken care of."
"You know I wouldn't have let anyone touch the Lost Boys. They are my responsibility, and you know that I care about them," his voice dropped a little lower, the anger seeming to melt out of him, "As for the others, they aren't important to me. My first priority is always going to be you-"
She cut him off again, her temper about to make his flare. "I was doing what I thought was right. I wanted to help them stop her; I needed to do something," she said, pleading with him to understand.
"You see, that's the problem. You didn't think! You never do when it is most important, and you seem to make a very bad habit of disobeying me!"
She glared, shoving him slightly in her frustration. "Disobeying you? Are you fucking kidding me? God dammit Peter! I was trying to be helpful, not rebelling. And get it through your head that I can take care of myself! You have been smothering me since we got our memories back, and it needs to stop. Now."
Peter snarled as he turned and punched the wall in his frustration– he wouldn't risk unleashing his magic so close to Reyna, no matter how angry he got– unaffected as his hand broke though. She crossed her arms and stared, waiting for him to speak. "I am trying to protect you! This whole town hates me, and among its residents are your brother and mine! First I lose Neverland, and I can't lose you too! But with you always doing something… this… this stupid!"
That was it. Her anger increased and she needed to leave, but it seemed she was going to do something she regretted first. "Maybe it is too fucking late for that! Maybe you lost me a long time ago and I am just realizing it! It seems that my stupidest decision was staying with you! If you decide to be the Peter I fell in love with, then I am sure you can find me or Felix! But until then, stay the hell away from me, Pan!"
Peter's whole face became one of shock and fear and pain. She was too angry to even care, though a voice screamed that she didn't mean it. She gave one final glare before moving to grab some clothes and leave. Peter grabbed her wrist, jerking her back. "You aren't leaving," he snarled.
She shook him off. "You can't stop me. I am not letting you boss me around any longer." She filled a bag, and Pan didn't try to stop her again. "I'd rather grovel on my knees for my brother's forgiveness before I stay with you."
It hurt like a knife to say it to him, but she stormed out. Felix was on his feet in a second and, with one glance back at the door that Pan had just slammed, jogged after her out the front entrance.
"Like mother, like daughter." She turned to face her brother, trying to take her mind off of her semi-break up. What was this about?
"Hook," Emma hissed, looking at the confused faces of the tables occupants.
"What is he talking about?" Henry asked, not even noticing the tension around him. He truly was the Truest Believer. After everything, he was still so happy and full of hope.
David caught on to his daughter's distress. "Should we, uh, read more stories?" he asked, reaching for the book. Regina wouldn't let it slide, walking over with Robin Hood.
"Actually, I would like to know what the pirate is talking about."
"It's nothing," Emma said, shaking her head.
"Are you planning on going back to New York?" Regina continued, disbelief coloring her tone. She wouldn't lose her son after she just got him back.
"Why would we go back to New York?" Henry asked, voicing his confusion. Everyone shared a look.
Regina answered with a large smile. She really loved the kid. "You're not. Right, Ms. Swan?"
Emma looked at the floor. "Actually, it is complicated."
Henry didn't understand. "Why would we leave? This is our home."
Emma just wanted this to end. "Henry, this isn't the time or place-"
"I think it is," Regina countered, not dropping the subject, not until she was sure her son was staying.
"No, it's not," Emma said in a voice with false politeness. She turned and walked out the door. Her parents looked concerned, as did Henry and Ruby, and Regina looked bothered. Robin just looked like he was intruding. Killian set his beer down.
"I'll talk to her," he offered, but Reyna was on her feet as well.
"I think she might need a women's touch, Hook. I kind of know how she is feeling," she said, turning to leave the diner. She hadn't forgiven her brother, and while she could stand to be in the same room with him again, she had a feeling that he might do more damage than good with the savior.
She found Emma sitting on a bench by the lake, breathing hard as she crossed her legs, clearly conflicted. She knew that she only had so long before Killian showed up, and she wanted to make this quick. She wasn't in the mood for talking, but she knew it would do both her and the savior some good.
"They don't understand what it is like, not really." Emma jumped, craning her neck to look at the young girl, surprise evident on her face. Reyna smirked, one that had taken years of practice. "Not who you were expecting, huh? May I sit?"
Emma nodded, turning away and looking down at her lap. Reyna sighed. "I know that you aren't particularly fond of me, given my choices in men, but I know what you are feeling."
Emma gulped, her eyes sad, though her tone was bitter. "How would you know?"
"I never had a family or a home when I was little. I was always moving around, and my brothers were never home. Hell, one even went as far as to abuse me for years. You are scared to accept that these people care and want you around. And you have someone to think about. Would you believe me if I told you that I didn't want to stay on Neverland at first? I would have gladly stayed with Killian over Peter, but now I can't stand be… being… separated from him," she stumbled over her words as her gut clenched in pain. She took a deep breath to steady herself. "But I found that I loved it, and I found my family. It wasn't until I actually left it that I realized how much I wanted to be there. I always used to tell Baelf-Neal," she corrected, "that you didn't have a home until you missed it so damn much that you had to go back."
Emma stared at her in shock. Clearly she hadn't believed that Reyna understood. Reyna also didn't know that Emma had received the same advice from Neal. "They are going to try and stop you, but this is a good decision. You will realize what you really want. You should leave, only so you know for sure if you want to come back. No one else can decide where your home is, and sometimes our home isn't with our family, our blood."
Emma looked down at her lap. "I jumped around from foster home to foster home so many times. No one wanted me, and I had to watch as all the other kids got adopted until finally I was shipped off to another house. And then I got too old for anyone to want me. When I met Neal, I actually was happy, for the first time in my life. But he abandoned me, and that hurt like a bitch. I went to prison for the guy! I had Henry and I regretted giving him up every day, but it was for the best. I wasn't raised the same way as he was. I don't do that blind faith and hope nonsense."
Reyna nodded, swiping at the tears that were threatening to fall from her eyes. She had lost her home, and she wasn't sure that she could find another one; she didn't want another one. Emma leaned over, putting a hand over the one that rested on her knee. Reyna looked up in surprise. "You are a good kid, Reyna," tears swam in Emma's eyes, "and one hell of an advice giver. I… I have seen the way that he looks at you, and while I don't see how, whatever happened, you can make it through. That kind of love, the kind that you share, it doesn't ever go away."
Reyna sniffled. "God, you sound like your mother," she complained, trying to make this less serious. Emma chuckled quietly, surreptitiously trying to wipe her own eyes.
Both jumped as her phone started ringing, and she looked down to see that David was trying to get a hold of her. She pressed the decline button, turning back to the lake, falling back into a comfortable silence, both silently holding in tears.
"You're making a mistake," Killian said as he walked up, looking at Reyna for a second before turning to Emma to plead with her, to convince her to stay.
"I don't want to talk to you about this."
"Don't listen to me, listen to your son." Reyna glared at this. That was a low blow, using Henry against her. "He thought this might remind you what you are leaving behind– your family," he said pulling out the storybook, its leather cover worn.
"Henry is my family," Emma said softly, "and I am taking him where he is safe." Reyna could see her will cracking. She didn't understand how Killian could have such a profound effect on Emma.
"No, that is just nonsense. You defeated the bloody Wicked Witch. You helped defeat Pan," Reyna hissed, making a fist– Pan was not defeated, "You broke the curse, and yet you keep running. What are you looking for, Swan?"
"Home," Emma answer simply, her tone broken.
"And that is in New York?" Hook asked, "That wasn't real."
"The last year it was."
"They were false memories. It was based on nonsense."
"Now we can make it real," Emma said defensively.
"Why can't you do that here, with your whole family?"
Reyna scoffed. Of course he wouldn't understand. She glared ahead.
"Because of this!" Emma shouted, pulling the book from him, "I don't see a family. I see fairytales. It isn't me, I didn't grow up to this, and I don't belong. And up until Henry, I don't think that I have been a part of anything."
Hook took a step closer. "But you could be. Only if you stay."
Emma looked as though she was at her wit's end. "As a kid, I ran away, it is what I did best. The first time, I thought that I had made a mistake, but I never missed them after I left. I am going to keep running until I feel that there is a place that I just miss."
"So you are just going to leave your parents? Don't you care about them… or anyone in this town?"
Reyna looked at the sky, throwing her hands up slightly. A deaf person could have heard that he was talking about himself. He needed her, and Reyna hated it. She hated him.
"Of course I care… But I have to do what is right for me and Henr-" she cut off abruptly, looking over her shoulder, "What the hell is that?"
Both Jones' turned to look at the beacon of yellow magic that was hitting the sky.
Reyna ran towards the barn, Emma and Hook trailing to make conversation.
"This is Zelena's time portal," she yelled over her shoulder at them. Emma ran up beside her, both heading towards the door. Hook caught Emma, shooting a pleading look at Reyna to stop.
"You don't have a way to close it, so I am not bloody well letting either of you go near it!"
Something in Reyna snapped. "You don't control me, Hook! This needs to stop. Who knows what this thing can do to the town!" With all the internal arguments that she had been having recently since she walked out on Peter, she couldn't stand the idea of someone else boss her around.
The doors flew open and they were all knocked off their feet and sucked towards the portal. Hook caught Emma on instinct, catching his hook on a notch in the ground. Emma grabbed Reyna with her free hand just before she could fly in.
Emma and Hook were shouting, but Reyna felt that she needed to get into the time portal, something calling her. Her grip was slipping from Emma's hand, but she didn't bother to struggle or shout, instead fell into the swirling vortex, screaming as she was plunged into cold darkness.
