As the weeks passed, the First Years were becoming more and more accustomed to the routine at Hogwarts.
George and Fred, in spite of their promises NOT to do so, pulled a few mild pranks, causing Gryffindor to lose a total of 200 points in the first month. Charlie was beside himself. He didn't know what more to do. He hollared, he threatened, he even tried to reason with them. Charlie had NO CHOICE but to reach out for help.
~ October 13, 1987 ~
Fred and George sat eating their breakfast, discussing with Lee Jordan a prank that had gone a little awry the night before, bringing their new total of points lost to 250. They were not a very popular pair in the Gryffindor House right now.
The post started to arrive. An old Great Grey Owl came barreling down at them, making a SPLAT into the tower of waffles in front of George.
"Is that Errol?" Fred laughed, until he saw the red envelope clutched in his claws.
"Uh-oh..." George cringed.
Percy shook his head, Charlie sighed "You lot better tend to that before it explodes." He got up and walked over to his friend at the Ravenclaw table.
"You open it." George urged.
"No you open it!" Fred nudged him.
George took the letter from the old owls claw and took a deep breath.
"Together," Fred nodded, trying to steel himself from the onslaught that was coming.
George held the envelope and Fred opened it.
Immediately it opened and hovered in front of them. The shrieking voice that emitted from the envelope made everyone turn and stare, wide eyed.
"George Gideon Weasley! Fred Fabian Weasley! I am sorely disappointed in your behavior!
It's one thing to run a muck here at home, but to practice no self control at school is beyond detestable! If I get one more owl regarding reprehensible behavior, I will come there myself and drag you home by your ears!
DO I MAKE MYSELF CLEAR?!"
The red envelope tore itself apart, the pieces floating down to settle on George's plate.
After a few moments of silence, the casual chatter of the Great Hall returned to normal.
Lee Jordan cleared his throat. "That's unlucky..." he said "Your mom couldn't have waited a day to send that." he chuckled slightly.
Fred looked at his twin, "Well George, I guess you know what that means,"
"We'll have to do better at not getting caught." George gave an evil grin, mirrored by his brother.
George looked around, the Great Hall, and his eyes locked with Garnet. He grinned and waved.
Garnet, tried to stifle a smirk, but failed. The smiled reached her eyes. She shook her head at him and turned back to Marcus Flint, who was bragging about something he did in their Defense Against the Dark Arts class the night before.
"So... what do you have in mind for today?" Lee grinned at the red heads.
"Well, it's Friday the 13th. People are naturally suspicious on Friday the 13th..." Fred said.
"...so why not shock everyone by," George looked around, "not doing ANYTHING?!"
Lee stared at them in shock. "Are you serious? How are you going to manage that?"
George laughed "It's going to be hard, but we think..."
"...it'll be worth it in the end! Everyone will be watching their backs all day!" Fred joined his brothers laughing.
"That's bloody brilliant!" Lee was cracking up.
They gathered their bags and started heading for their Defense Against the Dark Arts class.
George watched Garnet get up and head for the door.
"Come on Freddie!" he pulled his brother in her direction.
They caught up to her quickly. "Mornin' Prince!" George sashayed up to her left.
"What class are you off to?" Fred caught up to her right.
"Good morning, Weasley's. " she grinned. "I'm heading for History of Magic." Garnet paused before they had to part ways, "What are you two planning for today?" she raised a brow.
Fred and George shrugged, smiling. "Nothing."
Garnet crossed her arms over her chest "Uh-huh," she smirked, "I somehow doubt that's the extent of it."
They didn't admit or deny anything, just stood there smiling at her.
Garnet rolled her eyes and giggled, but cleared her throat and got a hold of her self quickly. "So how's your brother doing training for the first Quidditch game of the year? He got Seeker position, didn't he?"
"Yeah, he's been training like mad..." George said, until Fred elbowed him.
"Don't want to give the opposing team any inside advice, Georgie." Fred scolded jokingly.
Garnet feigned a sob, "I'm hurt you would think I'd pass information on to the others." Laughing she shoved George in the shoulder jokingly, "I'll talk to you guys later, I've got to get to class. Binns may be dead, but he still takes roll call."
"Good luck with your morning nap!" George called after her, Fred laughed.
They turned to head for their Defense Against the Dark class, joking among themselves, when Marcus Flint pushed in between them forcibly. "Watch where you're going Gryffindors." he snarled and continued on the direction Garnet headed.
Fred and George stared after him, eyes narrowed.
"I doubt that's the last time..." said Fred.
"...we'll have a run in with that arse." George finished.
They shook it off and ran to catch up to Lee Jordan.
True to their word, Fred and George refrained from pulling any pranks whatsoever all day. It was scaring the entire school, staff included. Students kept jumping at every little noise they heard, the teachers all looked under their table before sitting down to eat lunch that day, even Hagrid, the Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts, who seemed to have a fondness for the mischievous pair, had his eyes open and alert at all times.
When they walked in for Dinner, everyone turned and watched them approach the table.
"I do believe everyone..." George chuckled ominously.
"...is talking about us." Fred attempted to keep a straight face.
All through dinner, the twins sat nicely, chatting with their housemates, staying in their seats, not even hinting at a prank of sorts.
Charlie, Lee, Fred, George, and several other students gathered outside in the courtyard after dinner to play a few rounds of Gobstones before bed. Garnet decided to enjoy the crisp Fall air with everyone else. She stood beside George as he was watching Fred take on Cedric Diggory.
When Cedric got sprayed for the third time, Garnet wrinkled her nose and snorted, "And that's why I don't play this game." she muttered.
George turned to her and laughed "Not any good at it?"
"No, never have been. My dad tried to teach me and I simply could not get the hang of it." she shook her head. She looked George in the eyes and they smiled at each other. The she got very self conscious and lowered her eyes back down to the game at hand just in time to see Fred jump up with his arms raised in victory.
"That's point for me!" he grinned. "However shall I celebrate?" Fred turned to George, who waved his wand at a small object behind the fountain.
Next thing everyone heard and saw were a bunch of firecrackers and fireworks. The beautiful flashing lights danced in the sky. Students were laughing and cheering.
George felt Garnet stiffen beside him. He turned to talk to her, but she was already making her way to the door unsteadily. She tripped going up the couple steps when Snape opened the door, saw her and pulled her quickly inside.
Professor McGonagall came rushing into the courtyard, Professor Dumbledore on her heels.
"What is the meaning of this?" she looked around at the students who were enjoying the spectacle of lights in the sky.
No one said a word.
"Mr. Weasley, Mr. Weasley, did you two have a hand in this?" she looked at the twins.
They looked at her innocently and shrugged.
Professor McGonagall glanced around at all the faces of the children smiling at the display, then to Professor Dumbledore, who was just as enthralled with the fireworks.
"Professor Dumbledore?" she pulled his attention to her.
"Well...I suppose if there's to be a prank, it should be one that everyone can ENJOY, rather than suffer from..." Dumbledore raised a brow, smirked, and turned to head back into the school. Professor McGonagall shook her head, gave the twins a warning look, and followed him.
George and Fred grinned at each other. They had found their calling.
