Tim tells his children a story to try to get them to sleep. Everyone is present in this tale, but what's unusual about them, they are all birds.

Bird Song: Rescue of Big Brother

Part 2 Son of the Bat

The bat smiled more in his mind than in an outward appearance. He was pleased that Dick may have found a bird that he might be happy with, and that bird also accepted the fact that he was taking care of his little brother. There was one bird that was in the forefront of his mind, and that was his adopted son, Damian.

'I must check on Damian,' the bat thought. 'He has been fixing nests all day.' The bat exited the house, crawling out of the hole until he could cling upside down. He spread his wings and dropped down so he could glide. Though he would fly to small crevice he had found in an old abandoned well. He crawled through the crevice until he reached the more expansive cave area.

Damian huddled down in the nest made in the cave. He had fixed a lot of nests, but his home wasn't in the life tree. He made his home with the bat, which was unusual, for Damian was a sparrow.

The bat flew in and landed near the ceiling just above the nest. He eyed the little bird, watching him. He had adopted the little bird when his parents had abandoned him because they thought he was too weak and small. Selina had assisted in feeding him and helping him to grow, coming into the cave via a secret entrance only she knew. "Everything in order, my son?"

"Yes," Damian replied.

"This cave is too small," the bat observed. "In case the life tree should fail, we will need a larger place for the birds to find shelter."

"-tt-" Damian made a noise with his tongue.

"You do not sound pleased. You will not be alone then."

Damian puffed out his feathers in response then turned his back.

"It seems you have picked up some of my bad habits," the bat said. "You need to find yourself a mate and live with the other birds."

"No other bird wants me."

"There will be a mate for you some day."

"Maybe." Damian was noncommittal in his response.

"You must not argue with the other birds," the bat pointed out. "And whom I choose to fly with. I am showing the other birds how far our territory extends and what the dangers are. It was Terry's turn to fly with me. Now he must rest his leg."

"Fine...I will keep quiet," Damian replied.

"There is a young fledgling who is just learning to fly. He is late in learning. His brother has been very protective of him since they lost their parents to the fox, Ra's. The young fledgling could use a friend."

"I don't want to make friends," Damian scoffed. "They just hurt you."

The bat knew without voicing it what Damian was referring to. He had been abandoned by friends and family before he was even ready to fly. Damian was still hurting. It was going to take time. For now, they had other issues to deal with.

"Now Damian . . . That fox has been a thorn in our side for a long time. There must be a way to drive him out of our territory. Even the owls avoid him. We may not be able to drive the fox away with just the two of us. We may need to work together."

"All the birds like you...not me," Damian pointed out.

"Now Damian . . . . Let's not argue about that . . . . I need to rest for a little while then I must go out and feed and then patrol the area. Have you eaten?"

"no..."

"You need to because of the storm that is coming."

"Can't find food..."

"You need someone to help you look for food."

"I got him food," Selina said. "Here."

"Thank you Selina . . . ."

Damian slowly ate the food. The bat was perplexed as to why Damian was refusing to hunt for himself. He watched for a few more minutes then closed his eyes. There would be time after the storm passes to find out the reason.
