Chapter 2:
At First Glance
After a day of waiting for a response to the email, I finally got the answer I had been hoping for. In anticipation, I made the trip to the AEW headquarters that was located at the Jacksonville Jaguars stadium in Jacksonville, Florida. It wasn't that long of a drive, so I opted to drive there instead of catching a flight.
The warm summer air was flowing through my open windows inside my car. The sun was shining brightly through the open moonroof. Butterflies started to flutter in the pit of my stomach the closer I got to the building. Those feelings were welcomed, because I knew that I was doing what I wanted to do. I wasn't just a follower like my sister was. My father's disappointment was still heavy on my shoulders; but I knew this was for the best.
Pulling into the large parking lot of the building, I turned the key towards me, cutting the ignition off my vehicle. I sat there in silence for a moment to gather my thoughts. There were so many questions running through my head and they all seemed to jumble together. I had no doubt that my last name would raise some eyebrows once I stepped foot in that meeting room.
Swallowing the lump in my throat, I opened the door to step out. The sound of my heels clicking against the pavement echoed between the two buildings. I opened the large glass door and stepped into the beautiful lobby. There was a young woman behind the reception desk with a smile on her face. "Can I help you?" She asked sweetly.
"Tegan Flair, I'm here for a meeting with Tony Khan and Cody Rhodes." I answered.
"Ah Ric Flair's daughter. They are in meeting room three. Just take the elevator, to the top floor, over there to your right."
"Thank you."
Ugh, of course, even the receptionist would know who my father is. Thankfully, I didn't plan on using my last name in my ring name. Hopefully, that would curb down the critics when I finally got into the ring.
The elevator ride seemed endless; but in reality only a couple minutes had passed by. I was alone in the confined area, which was a relief to me. Once the elevator stopped moving, the door opened and I stepped out into a large hallway that had nothing but windows in it. Walking at a normal pace, I finally found meeting room three. The door was open and a man with bleach blonde hair greeted me. "You must be Tegan." He staid, extending his hand out to me to shake, which I did.
"I am, it's a pleasure to meet you." I replied, stepping fully into the room.
There were six people in the room. Tony was sitting at the end of the long rectangular table. His black large rimmed glasses hung low on his nose. He stood up and extended his hand out to me. "Welcome Tegan." He said, motioning me to sit down next to him on the right side.
Everyone started to introduce themselves to me. On Tony's left was Cody. To his right was Matt Jackson followed by his brother Nick Jackson. On my left was the offical legal person Megha and to her left was Kenny Omega.
My eyes connected with those of Kenny's for a moment longer than necessary. Of course, I've heard of each and every one of them with the exception of Megha. I've also watched matches that involved The Elite over the years, so I wasn't too unfamiliar with them.
Megha explained every page of my contact in detail, so I understood everything that I was signing. I felt like there were far too many eyes on me, though I understood why. Signing a name like Flair was a big deal in any wrestling promotion; but this was different. It wasn't a greedy glance, it was a passionate one. They genuinely wanted me to be there, which was more than I could say about the WWE.
"Sign here and here." Megha stated.
Holding the pen in my hand, I jotted my signature down to solidify that I was now a part of the AEW roster. Matt and Nick clapped, welcoming me into the fold. I smiled as I shook each one of their hands again. "Do you have any ideas of what you want to do, character wise?" Tony asked, taking his glasses off and sat them down next to his stack of papers in front of him.
"I'm not picky; but I really don't want to use the Flair name. I don't want my last name to be a beacon to anything. I want to earn everything I get and not have it given to me because of who my father is." I replied as honestly as I could.
"That is completely understandable. What name did you have in mind?" Kenny asked, stepping forwards a little.
"Tegan Rae, my first and middle name only."
"Fair enough. Welcome to AEW, Tegan."
He outstretched his hand towards me and I accepted it. Once again, our eyes connected and the butterflies that were once in the pit of my stomach were now giant freaking moths. His beautiful blue was a sight to behold for sure. "Thank you."
Once everything was said and done, I left the meeting room with a smile on my face. I was happy with my decision. Pushing the button for the elevator, I waited for a few moments. The doors opened and without looking I tried to step inside only to run into a body. I looked up to see another set of beautiful blue eyes.
He was probably around six foot, so my face came right to his chest. He was wearing a black short-sleeved button up shirt that was tucked into his form fitting jeans. The man was definitely country style and his long blonde hair was an added bonus to his good looks. "Whoa, sorry 'bout that." He said, touching my shoulder.
"It's fine. I should have been looking where I was going." I answered, quick to the reply.
"I haven't seen you around here before, new talent?"
"Yes, I just signed my contract a few minutes ago."
"That's awesome. I'm Adam."
He held out his hand towards me, which I accepted. Just when I thought the gigantic moths had settled down, they started to fly in my stomach again at a rapid pace. "I'm Tegan, it's nice to meet you Adam."
"Wait! Tegan as in Tegan Flair."
"The one and the same."
"Wow, I didn't know we were signing wrestling royalty."
Lowering my gaze from him. This was not how I wanted to be treated. I wanted to be my own person. He reached to place a single finger under my chin, raising my head back up to face him. "I'm sorry. I'm sure you are tired of hearing that."
"I'm proud of my family's accomplishments; but I didn't come here to have things handed to me. I want to build my own legacy. I want to earn the respect of every single person on this roster."
"I respect that choice."
"Thank you."
I pushed the elevator button again, since I missed the first trip down. "I'll see you around, Tegan." He said, stepping out around me to continue on towards the same meeting room I had been in. There was a smile on my face and heat on my cheeks. Perhaps, there would be alot of good things about signing with AEW.
