You were sitting on your roof top as usual as you watched the sun rise. You hadn't gotten any sleep as usual but it came with being a child of Hades. Still, you really needed to sort out your sleep schedule.
With your mother being a demon and your father being the god of death as well you thrived in the darkness which led to you finding it very hard to sleep with the combined influence of both your mother and father.
'Don't you need to get ready for school? You start at True cross today remember?'
"Ugh. Don't remind me, Epi," you told your companion.
Epiales was a daemon, a spirit that you had named after the greek god of nightmares but you just called him Epi for short. He was essentially a living shadow but he liked to take the form of a cat most of the time.
He had appeared to you on your 12th birthday with a note from your dad that told you that he was your companion for life. Since then, you two have been inseparable.
You got up and stretched, swinging off of the edge of your roof and through your window on the second floor of your house.
Today you were starting at True cross Academy, a school for exorcists and you weren't exactly too excited with the fact that you might get killed on your first day given that you're a demon.
'So are you all packed?'
"Yup. Didn't have much to pack anyways. Wait, do you remember where I put my gold drachmas?"
Epi sighed, 'In the top drawer.'
"Thanks," you said. You quickly took out the little pouch from your top drawer, put it into your suitcase and checked that you had everything before zipping it up.
You looked over at the clock which told you that it was only half 5. You still had plenty of time.
You went through your morning routine, taking a shower, brushing your teeth and drying and brushing your hair, putting it into a simple braid, your bangs slightly covering your right eye.
You had brought a female uniform originally but decided that there was no way in Tartarus that you were going to wear a skirt that short so you bought trousers as well as a male blazer since you hated the yellow ones that the girls had to wear so you were basically just wearing the male uniform.
It would make it easier to hide your tail anyway, a skirt would make it a lot more difficult and so would the form fitting blazers the girls had to wear.
You wrapped your tail around your waist before covering it with your shirt and wrapping your combat chains around your waist as a belt as well and putting on your blazer and buttoning it up.
You paused for a moment.
"Epi... do you think this is a good idea? You know, the daughter of a demon and the god of death going to a school for exorcists?" you paused and asked when you were putting on your tie.
'I don't know... I mean they accepted you so what could go wrong?'
"Yeah I guess so," you said, the reality of what you were about to do hitting you hard. You took a deep breath.
You picked up your backpack that you had slung over your chair and checked through it to make sure you weren't missing any of your school stuff. You had your books, pens, pencils and ambrosia and nectar. Yup you were good to go!
"Well, that's everything. Now I just need to get my dagger and I should be all set," You said, pulling your dagger out from under your pillow.
It had been a gift from your dad that contained your demonic flames but not so much your godly powers. It was an 8 inch black dagger that had been doused in the 5 rivers of the underworld and was imbued with your godly power so it contained quite a bit of it but left just enough for you to be able to fight without it.
You traced the patterns before connecting in to your chain belt.
"Shadow travel or normal human transportation?"
'Shadow travel' Epi said, smirking as best as he could for a cat.
"Just what I was thinking," you said as you smirked back at him.
You grabbed your suitcase and closed your eyes, focusing on the forest on the outskirts of True cross and shadows engulfed you.
You felt a familiar nauseating sensation and opened your eyes.
You didn't really need to do that but it helped for when you were doing long distance travel.
You looked around and stepped out of the forest, looking out at True cross academy.
It was basically a town and you stared at it in awe.
Epi jumped onto your shoulder.
'You ready?'
"Ready as I'll ever be."
You walked into the school with Epi on your shoulder and made your way into the school.
There were a bunch of people gathered in the main area in front of the school and you got a lot of weird looks.
Being the daughter of Hades had some downsides apart from being a natural born insomniac. You always had an aura of death around you which caused people's natural instincts to kick in.
They knew they should avoid you but they just weren't smart enough to realise that they should fear you. This was made even worse by the fact that your mother was a demon.
Animals on the other hand were smarter than humans since they heavily relied on their instincts so they immediately fled as soon as you were in a 1 mile radius of them.
It made it really difficult to make friends so you gave up at a pretty early age but you never really needed anyone apart from Epi.
You looked to your left and saw a group of girls whispering to each other and occasionally glancing at you.
Great. First day and there were already rumours about you being spread.
You were standing in a weirdly unoccupied 5 ft bubble, telepathically talking with Epi while the rest of the new students avoided you before someone came up to the new students and said that they were going to give you a tour around the school.
You reluctantly followed the rest of the students and, when the tour was finally over, you went to your dorm. It was an old looking building and apparently your bag had already been taken there so you opened the door and were greeted with 2 boys.
One had dark blue hair and the other had brown hair, three beauty marks and glasses but they both shared the same bright blue eyes so you assumed that they were brothers or were at least in some way related.
You continued to examine them and you took note of how the brown haired one seemed to be the more responsible one.
You all stared at each other for a moment and it was starting to get awkward before the one with the brown hair came forward and introduced himself.
"Hello. I am Yukio Okumura and this is my twin brother Rin. You must be the student that we were informed we were going to be rooming with," he said, holding his hand out.
"Hey I can introduce myself!" the other one, Rin, protested but Yukio just ignored him.
"I'm the older twin!" Rin said.
"You wouldn't think that honestly," you whispered to yourself but Yukio heard you and chuckled.
"You're right actually."
"What are you guys talking about?!" Rin asked like an exasperated child.
You just shook your head and laughed lightly.
You shook Yukio's hand, "I'm (y/n) (l/n). I guess I'll be sharing a dorm with you guys."
He nodded to you and let go of your hand. You were surprised at how willing he was to come near you. Most people would avoid you like the plague.
You looked over to Rin who was staring at Epi who was still on your shoulder.
It took you a second to realise that you hadn't introduced him yet.
'I'm hurt that you forgot about me!' He said in mock indignation and you rolled your eyes at him.
"Oh this is Epiales. He's my..." you paused for a moment.
'Say I'm your familiar.'
"My familiar," you finished rubbing the back of your neck nervously.
"A familiar?" Rin asked.
"Um yeah..."
You looked over at Yukio who seemed to be studying you and you looked away quickly before you gave anything away.
"Hey why are you wearing the guy's uniform?" Rin randomly asked and you scoffed.
"I don't know whether it's because the headmaster is a guy or because he just likes to see us suffer but the skirt is ridiculously short! There is no way in Hades I'm wearing that. As for the blazer, the girl's one is hideous. Why would they make it yellow and pink?" you complained, "Then again the school is pink so I guess it would make sense..."
"Hades?" Yukio asked and you realised that you had slipped up.
"Never mind I'm gonna go and find my room!"
You ran off and could feel Yukio staring at you.
You slipped by your choice of words but you could always just say that it was just a habit that you had picked up from researching greek mythology.
Well at least that was one disaster averted.
You continued up the stairs and eventually found your room. It was just opposite to the one that you assumed the boys were staying in.
You looked around your room and then started to unpack. Epi jumped down off of your shoulder and claimed the darkest corner of your room.
You smiled at him and then closed the blinds. It was way too bright outside.
It hadn't taken you that long to unpack so you decided to go to the cram school early using the key Mephisto gave you.
You put on your backpack and looked towards Epiales.
"Hey Epi do you plan on coming with me in your cat form or in a less obvious form?"
'This form should be fine. Mephisto already said that it was fine and you can just say that I'm your familiar anyways.'
You shrugged, "Fine by me. Suit yourself."
You went back downstairs but didn't see either of the boys there.
You started to make your way to the entrance to the cream school but were stopped by a white dog when you were about halfway there.
"Okay who are you? No animal would stay this close to me willingly."
You had to admit you felt kind of stupid talking to a dog but there was no way that it was an actual dog by it's unusual proximity to you and the collar around it's neck.
You were proven right as soon as it changed into Mephisto.
"You caught me," he said with his usual obnoxious flare and smile, "I'm just here to give you a reminder before you go into the cram school. Now-"
"No fire, no revealing Epiales as a daemon, no shadows, ghosts, skeletons or shadow travelling. Yeah yeah, I know. Demons and death bad. Humans and exorcists good," you finished for him listing the things off on your fingers, "Not that you can say much yourself. Being a demon and all."
He looked at you in surprise for a moment before regaining his usual cocky smile and bowing to you.
"Seems like you're all prepared. Now follow me." and he promptly jumped off of the side of the path you were walking on.
You shrugged your shoulders and looked around to make sure no one was there and shadow travelled down.
Mephisto looked at you and shook his head.
"What did we just establish?" he said pointing his finger in your face, "I'd watch myself when using those powers of yours."
"And I'd watch where you put your fingers unless you want to lose one and nobody saw me anyways!"
He blinked at you. "Fine" he just looked back towards the door on the side of the path.
"Now use the key I gave you to enter the cram school. The first years will be in room 1106," he said as you approached the door.
"Just so you know, I'll be watching your class for the day," he announced, saying "Eins, Zwei, Drei!" before turning into a dog again with a pink poof of smoke and running back to the school.
You sighed and ran your hand through your hair.
"Well, here goes nothing..." you sighed as you took out your key, unlocking the door to the cram school.
You quickly walked to your classroom and no one was there yet so you took a seat in the far right corner at the back while you waited for everyone else to come in.
You had waited for about 5 minutes before getting bored so you just started to talk to Epiales and asked him about what it was like down in Erebus (the greek name for the underworld).
It wasn't a pretty description. He said that it was mainly screams and torture in the fields of punishment and just an empty wasteland for the fields of Asphodel. Just spirits walking around aimlessly for the rest of their afterlife.
The only good part it seemed was Esylum and the Isle of Bless. He basically described it as paradise.
"What's my dad's palace like? I read a bit about it but I never got a clear description." you asked.
'Well, I have to say that it's massive but it's quite morbid. It has quite a few depictions of the different punishments that Alecto and her sisters give out but it is still very beautiful in its own way,' he said.
You started to daydream and think about how much you would love to visit one day and then pulled out your sketchbook from your bag. You started drawing what you imagined each part of the underworld was like.
You had been so absorbed in your drawing that you didn't even realise that people had started walking in.
"Hey that's a really good drawing," someone said behind you and you jumped in your seat, the shadows around you acting up a bit.
"Σκατά!" you yelled. (Pronounced: Ska-ta)
You turned and realised that it was just Rin and calmed down.
You laughed nervously, "Oh it's just you. Um... th-thanks." You rubbed the back of your neck as a light blush dusted your had a weird fluttering feeling in your stomach but you ignored it.
It was a miracle that he was talking to you, much less complimenting you. You were going to have to keep an eye on this one.
"Skata?" he asked, "What does that mean?"
It took you a second to realise that you just said shit in greek and you blinked twice at him before saying that it meant nothing important.
You turned to the rest of the class when Rin went to sit down and realised that everyone was staring at you except for a but with a puppet and another one that was wearing a black hoodie.
"Could you keep it down! Some of us are actually here to learn. Not listen to your whiney voice."
You turned to the voice to see a boy with piercings and a part of his hair dyed blonde.
You stood up and placed a hand on your table as you glared at him.
"Oh really?! I don't think you'll be saying that when you're screaming as you burn in-" you started to threaten as the shadows around you darkened.
'(y/n) stop! You don't need another death on your hands! Not on your first day! You know how unstable you can get!'
You looked down at Epi who had one of his paws on your hand and clenched your jaw. You could see the reflection of your eyes in his own and could see that your normally bright red eyes had darkened and were close to turning black like whenever you used your flames.
You looked over at Rin who stared at you with wide eyes and saw Mephisto in his dog form next to him who was staring at you with a warning look.
Another downside of being a child of Hades and a demon. You had a very short fuse. You guessed that also came with having little to no social interaction during your lifetime.
You closed your eyes and took in a steadying breath before letting out a frustrated sigh that was almost a growl.
"Fine," you whispered to Epi as you shot a cold glare at the boy with the blonde streak in his hair.
You sat down with your arms crossed over your chest and looked around the room again. Everyone was staring at you now and that means everyone.
The one with the blonde streak in his hair was glaring at you. Great. First day and you're already making enemies. You didn't have the patience to have to deal with him right now. It wasn't your fault that you were terrible in social situations. That's what you got for having a father that was shunned by his entire family and having one messed up past.
Luckily for you your teacher walked in. Wait was that Yukio?!
