Murphy's Law
L.A.: Hey everyone! Hope you are safe and healthy! Thank you for the reviews! Without further ado, here's chapter 2!
It was going to be one of those days…
One of those days were everything that could possibly go wrong does.
Ben Tennyson should have guessed this. After all, it had started earlier that day when he had overslept and missed breakfast.
Then later on, when Julie was complaining about her history partner, Riley, slacking off, he should have noticed the look on her face when she was talking. The I want to complain, not have you problem solve look.
But seriously, how was he supposed to know that saying that if Julie couldn't confront Riley then she will be able to handle it on her own was the wrong answer? He trying to be supportive instead it blew up in his face, literally. He had never seen Julie so mad in her life.
Ben sighed as he glanced out the backseat window of Kevin's car. He was beginning to think that he should just call the day a loss, go home and binge watch Sumo Slammers.
"Since when have you been so emo?"
"Huh?" Ben blinked and turned to Kevin. He was watching him from the rearview mirror. He hadn't even noticed.
Gwen turned around to face him. "You've been quiet and sighing this entire drive." Gwen's expression softened slightly. "Everything okay?"
"Ever have one of those days where everything just sucks? It's one of those days. Plus, it doesn't help that Julie and I fought."
Kevin let out a short laugh. "Trust me, those days are the worst."
Gwen glared at Kevin. "Really? You have them a lot?"
Kevin turned his attention back to his driving. "I haven't had any recently though."
Gwen didn't look convinced. "Uh-huh." She turned back to Ben. "At least you can take out your frustration on the Vreedle brothers."
That was the topping to this entire horrible day cake. The Vreedle brothers had been spotted wreaking havoc on a construction site. Usually, Ben jumped at the opportunity to stop an alien wreaking havoc. But, the Vreedle brothers…
Ben groaned. "They're just so dumb. They aren't even a challenge. I'll probably beat them within minutes."
Gwen smirked. "Glad to see your ego hasn't been affected." Gwen glanced ahead. "Who knows, maybe they'll surprise you."
Kevin pulled into the construction site. "Only one way to find out."
They got out of the car.
The Vreedle brothers hadn't bothered to be inconspicuous. The construction site had been ripped apart. Bulldozers had been overturned, random scorch marks were in the ground, and there was a giant hole in one of the buildings.
Ben immediately spotted the brothers walking into a nearby abandoned warehouse as they loudly shouted. "Come out. Come out. Wherever you are."
Ben gave Gwen a look.
"I didn't say they were going to surprise you. I just said they might."
"I don't mind," Kevin said as he placed a hand on a nearby metal beam. He immediately absorbed the metal taking on a reddish orange sheen. "The more predictable they are the easier it is to beat them up."
Ben sighed as he fiddled with the ultimatrix. "Let's just get this over with." He quickly scanned through the aliens and decided on Rath. Ben was angry. Rath seemed liked perfect choice for today.
He pressed down and within moments felt the familiar tingling sensation that always accompanied his transformation. Gwen had often commented that the transformations looked painful. It was actually the exact opposite.
Transforming felt exhilarating, like greeting an old friend. He could feel the alien DNA shifting and changing his form. Making him stronger. More powerful.
As his transformation completed, the exhilaration rushed through him as he shouted out. "Rath!"
The Vreedle brothers had barely taken two steps into the warehouse before they were promptly knocked to the other side of the room.
As they got to their feet, they found themselves facing Gwen Tennison, her power crackling around her, Kevin Eleven, and Rath.
Rath pointed to them like a wrestler calling out an opponent. "Let me tell you something Vreedle Brothers. Rath has had a bad day. Rath now has to deal with you." Rath cracked his knuckles. "Rath is going to beat you to a pulp."
The taller of the two brothers, Rhomboid, glanced at his brother. "Do you think they're here for it, too?"
The shorter of the two, Octagon, shook his head. "Naw, he's dumber than us."
Rath growled as he charged.
"Ben wait," Gwen called out.
The warning came a little too late.
Ben hadn't seen the brothers pull out their guns. He barely uttered a yelp in surprise before he was hit full force in the chest with a double blast.
The burning sensation was nothing compared to hitting the fragile ground nearby. It let out a groan of protest before collapsing several stories underneath him.
He hit the ground floor with a loud thump, knocking the wind out of his lungs. He lay stunned for a few moments as he tried to force air back in his lungs.
He could hear the telltale beep of the ultimatrix powering down. Moments laters, he was engulfed in the glowing green light as he transformed back to his normal human self.
With a groan, Ben forced himself to a sitting position. He could still hear the distant sounds of the battle going on above him.
"That hurt," he muttered as he winced. He could already tell he was going to have a nasty bruise on his side. He really hoped he didn't have bruised ribs. They took forever to heal.
Ignoring the pain, he forced himself on his feet. No matter how much his body protested, he knew he needed to get back in the fight. The Vreedle brothers may be stupid, but they could still pack a punch when needed.
He had barely taken a step when a low growl came from the shadows nearby.
Ben slowly turned.
There was definitely something lurking in the shadows. The glowing red eyes that stared back at him were an obvious indicator. However, he couldn't tell exactly what the creature was. It was as if it blended in with the inky darkness. No way of telling where the shadows began and the creature ended.
The eyes narrowed as it let out a louder growl. From the shadows large sharp fangs emerged.
Warning bells were going off in Ben's head. Whatever was in the shadows was dangerous. He could feel it. In his present form, he would be ripped to shreds.
He slowly started to move his hand toward the ultimatrix. If he could transform before the creature attacked… turned into one of his aliens who's skin was like armor, he could fight back.
His fingers brushed the ultimatrix.
With a howl, the creature lunged just as his finger depressed the ultimatrix.
There was a flash of green. The feel of teeth sinking into his skin. Pain, like none he ever experienced before… then darkness.
Gwen panted as she summoned up her magic again. She never should have mentioned that the Vreedle Brothers could surprise them. Murphy's Law was being a pain in the butt.
"This is stupid," Kevin panted beside her.
Gwen was inclined to agree with him. The Vreedle brothers were never this motivated. Whatever they came down here for, they were determined to get it.
Where's Ben? Gwen thought as she deflected one of the lasers away from her. He should have been back by now.
A bone chilling howl ripped through the air causing everyone to freeze.
Gwen felt her blood run cold. The sound had come from the hole that Ben and disappeared into. That hadn't sounded like one of Ben's aliens though. It sounded feral, wild, and angry.
"What was that?" Kevin said, his eyes focused on the hole.
Even the Vreedle Brothers seemed to have forgotten the current fight as they trained their weapons on the hole.
"I do believe it is angry," Octagon said.
"That can't be good," Rhomboid replied as he cocked his gun.
Another bone chilling howl rang through the air.
A rush of air hit them, nearly sending them sprawling. Through squinted eyes, Gwen saw a large black creature surge from the hole in front of them and land a few feet away.
Straightening up, Gwen felt horror rush through her as she took in the creature. The horror wasn't because it looked like a distorted large black wolf with wings. It wasn't from the black shadow like tendrils that floated around its body that made the creature seemed more ghost-like than physical. It wasn't even the red glowing eyes that practically screamed pain and anger.
No, the image that had caused Gwen to feel horror, was the piece of a familiar green jacket stained in blood stuck between the creatures bared fangs.
L.A. And we'll end on that cliffhanger. You know what to do READ and REVIEW!
