Chapter 2 (Madi POV)

"Are we there yet?" I whine impatiently to my parents for what feels like the hundredth time.

They both laugh, "we're about twenty minutes away." Mom smiles at me. "You're going to love this house."

I roll my eyes, "you say that every time we move."

"This is the last time until you go to college," she promises.

"I know, it just sucks having to start high school with no friends and it's going to be weird actually going to school with all of you."

"Come on Madi, it's going to be awesome!" Dad says with excitement making me roll my eyes.

"Yeah until I call you mom or dad in front of everyone," I mumble.

I don't wait for them to say anything as I put my headphones in blasting music to drown them out.

How am I going to high school with my parents? Well...they're vampires. I found out about two years ago. I started to notice things about my family and started to pay more and more attention to them.

They never ate, only pretended or say they ate earlier or will later. Their ice cold skin whenever they touched me. The way they act and move. How everyone has the exact same eyes except for me with my gray ones. It wasn't until I caught them whispering one day about how I'm getting suspicious and were putting things together. I confronted them about my suspensions to what they were and they confirmed it.

They explained my adoption, everything about them, and how I am safe to be around their kind. I wasn't angry or scared but thankful to know the truth. When they all told me their stories, I cried for every one of them. They were so heartbreaking.

I love every single one of them with all my heart. Besides my parents, the one person I'm the closest to is Jasper. He might be my uncle, but he's my best friend. The family was surprised at how close we've gotten considering his past. But with me having no scent, especially my blood, it's been no issue.

I remember the first time I fell in the kitchen when I was about eight, I smashed my head on the corner and everyone started freaking out and holding a confused Jasper back. I didn't understand then but now I do. My blood had zero affect on all of them.

Something else that seemed helpful was that besides Alice and Jasper to an extent, no powers seemed to work on me. Edward couldn't read my mind, Jasper could feel my emotions but couldn't alter them. Alice could see my future but if Edward went to read her thoughts to see her visions on me, they were a blur and he couldn't see me.

That made everyone happy knowing that no one could use their power against me or try to see into anyone minds about me; like the Volturi. We won't get into them.

Even though I was adopted, I look just like my mom. My cousins in Denali say that even for a human, I have the flawless beauty she does along with her blonde hair. I love my parents so much and I couldn't be happier that they found me regardless of what they are. It doesn't change anything. They're my mom and dad.

The thing that does make me sad is that it's not a life I want for myself. I want what mom wanted before she was turned. To grow old with a man I love with children and to see them have children. To know that my parents have to watch me grow old and eventually die breaks my heart. But it's the life I want. The whole family seemed to be relieved and very happy when I told them that.

Right now we are headed to our new home for at least the next four years. With them not being able to age, we don't stay in one place very long. The younger they start, the longer we get to stay. What we've been able to do is stay in a location long enough for each school for me; elementary, middle school, and now high school.

We were recently in Alaska living close to our cousins, who I'll miss like crazy especially Kate, she was so much fun to be around. I twirl my necklace around my finger that she gave me yesterday morning before we left. It had a lightning bug on it. We found out that she was unable to shock me with her power, but anyone who touched me would get a good zap. It was quite hilarious actually. I would think that she was just hugging me when she'd be shocking me and wait to see who'd touch me first. We found it funny but no one else did, especially her sisters who just had to play with my hair constantly.

Now we're headed to Forks, Washington for high school. Edward and Alice will be freshmen with me. Mom, dad and Jasper will be sophomores. It's going to be strange being at school with them but like dad said, it should be awesome.

I'm broken out of my thoughts as we pull down a long dirt road surrounded by trees that leads to a gorgeous house that's basically all windows. I have to give it to grandma, she can really design houses. This one is definitely my favorite so far. I pull out my head phones and jump out of the car looking around.

Mom giggles, "told you you'd love it."

I smile at her, "you're right. Happy?"

She pulls me into her side, "anytime I'm right I'm happy." Dad chuckles pulling us both into his giant arms, "come on let's get unloaded."

Luckily there wasn't much to unload, just personal items and clothes. Each house has new furniture and decor. I love my room, first one I have that has a balcony. I see me doing a lot of reading out there. Who knows, a guy might stand outside looking up one day calling my name.

Yeah right. With dad and my uncles, no guy is ever going to try to get with me.

A knock on the door breaks my thoughts.

"Hey kiddo, want to come with me into town tomorrow to get the hiking gear for sunny days?" Grandpa asks. Each place we go to, we buy new hiking and camping equipment for the cover on bright sunny days to keep them out of work and school. Those days is usually spent with just my parents out in the woods for us time. Plus, I love the outdoors so no complaints there.

"Definitely! I really need some new boots."

He smiles, "perfect, it's a date."

Grandpa takes me out to the diner to get breakfast before heading to Newton Olympic Outfitters. I immediately fall in love with the store. Grandpa doesn't stop me from grabbing anything I wanted as he gets the rest of the gear.

What can I say? I'm a bit spoiled.

I'm trying on boots when someone approaches, "is there anything I can..." I turn around and meet his icy blue eyes cutting him off and I swear my heart stops.

It was as if time stood still. I'm not sure how long we were starring until we snapped out of it. He clears his throat, "sorry...um... was there anything I can help you with?" He says with a bright smile which I can't help but smile back.

"Yeah...do you have these in a seven and a half?" I ask holding up a boot. He goes to grab the boot and our hands touch and it's electrifying making us both jump.

"I'll be right back." I watch him rush to the back and I bite my lip.

Feeling eyes on me, I turn to see grandpa watching me with a smirk. Heat rises in my face and I look away just as he returns with with a box in hand.

"Here you go. We have every size available in these. Not a lot of girls our age like the outdoors."

I take the boots and smile, "not me, I love it. My family and I are always going hiking and camping especially when the weather is amazing."

He seems to like that. "When did y'all move here?"

"Yesterday. All of our gear was pretty worn down so me and my.." crap don't say grandpa. Think! Mom and Jasper are twins who are grandmas niece and nephew... "my uncle. He's the new doctor at Forks Memorial Hospital."

"Uncle? Did your entire family move here?" He asks sitting down next to me.

Cover story, I remind myself. "It's a little complicated. My aunt and uncle adopted me and my brother and sister who are twins; Rosalie and Jasper, after our parents died, and they also adopted Alice, Emmett, and Edward. They have the biggest hearts. They couldn't have kids of their own so they took all of us in."

Sadness is all over his face, "wow, I'm sorry about your parents." His sincerity was completely genuine. I felt bad for lying but I had too.

"It's ok, it was a long time ago. We just moved from Alaska to start my freshman year."

He smiles now, "I'm a freshman too! I would love to show you around. Who knows, we might have some classes together."

His smile is so contagious, "I would love that..." I realize now that I didn't know his name and didn't see a name tag.

He shakes his head and smiles before holding out his hand, "sorry, I'm Mike Newton. This is my parents store."

I feel the electricity again as I take his hand, "Madeline Hale but everyone calls me Madi."

"Madi," he says softly making my face heat up. He looks behind me, "I think your uncle is ready."

I turn to see grandpa walking towards the register. I nod and stand up. Mike follows us and introduces himself. I see him flinch at grandpas cold touch.

After paying for everything Mike writes his number down and hands it to me, "call me if you want to meet up for orientation or school shopping or um...I can show you some amazing secret spots to hike to."

I bite my lip, "thank you, I'd like that," I write down my number as well which makes him smile bigger than I've seen. "Bye Mike."

Grandpa didn't say anything as we load up the car and head back to the house, but I can feel his amusement. "What?" I finally ask.

He shakes his head smiling, "you're just growing up is all."

I push my bottom lip out, "aww grandpa!" He gives my hand a light squeeze. "But please don't say anything to any of them, especially dad. You know how he's going to get." He looks guilty. "What did you do?!"

He pulls out his phone and shows me a picture of Mike and I smiling at each other and I can't help but smile at it, then I realize what he did. "You sent this to everyone didn't you?"

"Sorry Madi, but I couldn't resist."

I lean back in my seat and groan, "ugh, you're as bad as Alice with the gossiping."

He just chuckles as we head home where I can only imagine what awaits for me.
