As Alita and Immanuel braced themselves to meet their end with the collapsing citadel, they heard Kurdran's husky voice : "Aye laddies, you wanna die or no?"
Alita : "Kurdran! Thank the stars you're here!"
"Waste no time laddies! We've got a bigger trouble. Deathwing's back and he's brought his army of dragons to assist the Horde!"
He was right. The two heroes got on Sky'ree's back and fled from the collapsing city. They watched as the refugees in Iron City with all their inhabitants fled the city before it could be pummeled by the remains of Zalem. To make matters worse, Kurdran was being followed by a few dragons who started spitting fire at them!
The wizard countered their assault by firing lightning bolts which killed some of the dragons. Soon, they swooped down to an encampment which Dr. Ido and the Hunter-Warriors had made, in preparation for their assault on the Dark Portal. The Elven Snipers killed the rest of the dragons.
Alita hugged Dr. Ido and the scientist was like : "You went on a suicide mission all by yourself! Don't you ever do that again!"
Turning to the wizard, he said : "Don't you dare pull this stunt again! You know that I can't fix her if she got damaged!"
The wizard : "I understand your concern Dr. Ido but the Paladins and I know how to heal wounded cyborgs too. Besides, this is war! If you think you're the only one who's seen losses, think again!"
Alita looked at the wizard : "So is that your insecurity?"
"Yes, Alita. I lost the love of my life and my commander in a battle against the Bleeding Hollow Clan." recounted the wizard, "It happened months before Dr. Ido restored you and ... " he tried but words couldn't come. That's when, Alita held the wizard's hands. Immediately, she felt better as magic began to course through her.
"The feeling is mutual I suppose." whispered Alita.
At this, the wizard broke off. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean this to happen."
Alita placed a hand on his shoulder : "It's okay to feel this way. If it helps, let me tell you something that my commander told me while training me before the Fall. I don't know how her words make any sense, but perhaps you might find them more useful."
"What did she say?"
"From Light comes Darkness and from Darkness, Light!". As soon as the wizard heard these words, he stood straight with a renewed vigour. Just then a few Resistance members showed up.
"Guys, you won't believe what's going on!"
"The Orcs are retreating?"
"No, they're holding back the Portal but they're not sending out new troops to attack us!"
"That's strange isn't it?" commented Alita.
"Knowing that Zalem and Iron City has been destroyed should push the Orcs to a massive assault on us. If they're not doing that then ..."
Just then, some badly wounded Elven scouts appeared : "My liege! Forgive me for being the bearer of bad news!"
"What is it?"
"A detachment of Orcs led by a Death Knight decimated the castle at Alterac leaving no survivors!" one of the elves reported.
Another continued : "And they fled in the heat of the night with our prized possession!"
"Oh no!" exclaimed the wizard "It's all clear now. I can see why the Orcs came here in the first place!"
Alita : "Did not Nova summon them to our world?"
"Yes he did, but the Orcs never had the intention of conquering our world. Why do you think they did not mount an assault knowing that we were at our weakest but fled with the Eye of Dalaran?"
Ido : "What do you make of this?"
"The castle at Alterac was one of the few refugee hideouts that were built and hidden using arcane magic. It was no ordinary castle though for it guarded a tome of power called the Book of Medivh"
"Medivh ?" a Resistance member asked : "As in the corrupted magician because of whom the rift was created in the first place?"
"Yes" verified the wizard, "that tome contained information about how the great sorcerer opened the rift."
Alita : "I get it now! The Orcs are now trying to learn how the rifts were made!"
"So that they can make more rifts and conquer more worlds!" commented a Paladin.
An elf quipped : "If that happens, the Horde will become an unstoppable force, reigning supreme over all worlds!"
A Resistance member said : "I know that there's a lot of fancy stuff going on here but can we just stop the invasion by destroying the portal once again?"
The wizard replied : "I know that this is kinda stupid but if we save our reality by doing this, we might endanger the existence of other worlds out there."
Alita : "He does have a point. Besides, if we destroy this portal, who knows with all that knowledge, they can rebuild that portal once again!"
Another Resistance member asked : "So, what do we do boss?"
The wizard : "We capture the Dark Portal and reclaim the relics. We must venture into Draenor, the homeworld of the Orcs!"
Ido was not in favour : "Is there any other way? After what happened up there in Zalem, I don't want you to go into an unknown world!"
"Just so that everyone knows, it is going to be a suicide mission, so only those with a strong heart step forward. I shall hold nothing against you if you don't join me in this quest but be warned. I am prepared to give up my life, who else wants to join me in this mission?"
To Ido's horror, Alita was the first person to put her best foot forward and then, a few members of the Resistance followed suit, followed by Rayona and her Elven contingent and some of the Paladins.
Alita looked at Ido : "He did say ,'those with a strong heart step forward!' and I have the strongest of 'em all!"
"With a heart powerful enough to power up all of Iron City." replied the wizard: "Her safety is my responsibility Dr. Ido. Now I want you to lead the rest of the contingent so that they fortify the region around the Portal on both sides after our assault."
...
The combined forces of the Resistance and the Alliance launched an assault on the Orcish fortresses of the Bleeding Hollow, Warsong and Shadowmoon clans. While the Orcs weren't taken by surprise, they were brutally devastated by the assault. They did manage to gain some victory for they captured Kurdran and his mount Sky'ree along with a few of the attackers.
Amidst the fray, the wizard saw a clear path towards the Dark Portal. Even with his ability of summoning holy visions of faraway lands, he was unable to peer through the Portal to see what was on the other side. But he had been working on a spell, capable of sending shockwaves that stun the opponents.
Without any ado, he charged towards the Dark Portal, dodging incoming enemy and friendly fire. As soon as he reached the gateway, he jumped and struck the ground with such a force that it sent shockwaves in all directions, some of which traveled though the Portal to the other side!
"This is the moment friends!" commanded the wizard : "Storm the Portal!" and as soon as he said that, Alita and all those who volunteered for the mission made a mad dash for the gateway. Without turning here or there and giving any second thoughts, they jumped into the Portal and
...
Zap! They landed on the other side to find themselves surrounded by a mashup of various classes of Orcs, some of them technologically at par with humans while the rest, as primitive as the old Horde that invaded Azeroth millenia ago. All of them were stunned by that shockwave and so, they were taken by surprise when the Alliance troopers opened fire on them.
After clearing out their immediate surroundings, they launched an assault on the nearby settlements of the Shattered Hand Clan. After destroying them, the refugees from Iron City were called to build the fortifications on both sides of the Dark Portal.
As they ventured out to eliminate the surrounding settlements of the Warsong and the Shadowmoon clans, Alita, Immanuel and their allies looked at Draenor. Although Iron City was in ruins, the land outside had always been greener and brighter, except for the cities infected with URM's bioweapons. Not so with Draenor, for it had crimson red skies and the vegetation there was almost lifeless. Trees were just reduced to leafless stumps.
"My God! Look at this place! Damn this place stinks!"
"Fel magic has corrupted this land miserably! Now you see why this mission is important. If we don't stop the Orcs now, we won't be able to stop them ever again!"
