Charles Xavier, the head of the institute, sat in his office, reading the files discovered on the new mutant. Charles could not get the image of the adolescent girl out of his head. Her hair was mixed with blood due to an injury on the left side of her head, her clothes were drenched in blood and her face was pale. There was a bullet wound as well as bruises, cuts, and scars covering her body. It was obvious she was experimented on for several years due to scarring across her body The telepath pondered on how she would be once she wakes, and how she will behave with the other students. He tried to settle his worry about the new mutant and turned his focus on Logan. Hank expressed to the Professor that it was best to keep Logan in the dark for now, until there was a certainty, but Charles believed telling him from the start was better. The head mutant analyzed the file in front of him. 'An empath,' Charles thought to himself. 'I have not seen an empath since Calore-'
"Hey Charles," Logan walked in, knocking the telepath's train of thought. "You wanted to see me?"
"Ah yes, there is something I would like to talk to you about regarding the new mutant that arrived," Charles said, gesturing the Wolverine to sit. Charles paused taking in his old friend. Logan, or the Wolverine, was a hardened man who displayed tough love to the students. Logan was the type of man who understood the misunderstood and struggled with his own demons. He has come the farthest since they first met, which is why he thought this was for the best. However, Logan suffers from his own demons and anything regarded the past would be too much for him. "We found uh interesting information in her file that very much relate you to her."
"Ah, so she was a lab rat? Ok, want me to talk to her or something? The girl was a mess when she arrived here, it was a good thing Jean found her. She has been asking a lot about her, a lot of the students have." Logan sat more comfortably in his chair, sharpening his claws.
"Not quite, she is more like you than you might believe," Charles talked slowly, unsure of how to tell his old friend. Logan tilted his head in confusion and with a sigh, Charles spoke again. "Biologically."
"Charles, just spit it out."
"When she arrived, we found files on her. One of them stated that she is your daughter. We, of course, are going to run our own tests but this is something I imagined you would want to know." Charles watched his dear friend's face go blank. "I know you do not remember your past but this girl can be the key. Perhaps her memories can unlock your own."
"The key, Charles? Do you hear yourself?!" Logan nearly shouted, "This is a girl, for Christ's sake! A girl that could be my...I don't know if I can manage my past if there is a child in it."
"Children." Charles corrected, instantly regretting it. "She had a brother who is believed to be dead. They both were in the mutant escape." Logan shook his head, getting ready to leave. "Logan, I know you are confused and angry, but if this is true it could be very helpful for you both."
"Charles," Logan warned, "Just call me when the god damn test is over." Logan stormed out, slamming the door behind him.
"Well, that went well" Charles commented to himself.
Bright lights blinded Psyche as she opened eyes, taking several blinks to get her adjusted to the room. It was a large room with what felt like perfect air ventilation. There were large windows against the right wall of the room with a curtain covering them to block the bright sun from coming in and disturbing the girl. Her body was on a soft bed, making her feel like she was sinking into a mass of pillows. Expensive equipment was near the bed and scattered throughout the room, monitoring her. She looked around this oddly comforting room, feeling a pain in her head. Where am I? she thought, biting her lip.
"You are in my institute, for the gifted." Charles stated, catching her attention. She took every detail of his face as if her life depended on knowing every feature. He stared at the poor girl taking in her frail-looking body and weary eyes.
"How did you..?"
"Like I said, the gifted." Charles smiled. To Psyche, he sounded professional and soothing which was odd. She remained quiet, in almost fear of speaking. "I am Professor Charles Xavier." Once hearing his name, the young teenager remembered who he was and how she knew of him. Her brows furrowed in confusion with her powers. 'How couldn't I sense you?' She thought, feeling lightheaded. "You are heavily medicated which is why you cannot feel. Your wounds were rather serious. I apologize for reading your mind without permission but you have no reason to fear me. You came here seeking help, a student found you." Memories from earlier flooded her head- the escape, the explosion, her brother.
"My brother! I-I lost my brother. I-I... He was in the explosion." Her body jumped up in a state of panic. She was about to move as if she wasn't injured.
"Psyche, if one of your wounds open, you will be seriously hurt. You are in no condition to move." He said, making her uneasy. "It really is for the best if we talk about your brother once you are well."
"There is no talking. He's dead. There is no surviving that. I saw it explode. I saw him die." Tears escaped her eyes as she stared down at her hands.
"We do not know for certain, Psyche. I promise you I will investigate this.
"He made this plan. He wanted to meet you. I'm here because of him and now he is dead."
"You must know that this is not your fault," Charles spoke, and she continued to ignore. Her eyes never left her hands. "Grief is a hard thing. I see that right now is not the best time to talk. I will be back tomorrow to check on you. If you need me, I am one dial away."
Psyche sat there staring at her hands for what seemed like hours, thinking about her brother. He was better than her in every way- he organized the escape plan, he got her out and he went back to help those who couldn't. She felt nothing but a ripping pain in her chest as she dozed off to sleep.
Logan walked into the lab leaning against the doorway watching Hank. "Got the results yet?" Logan spoke making the beast jump.
"Must you always sneak up on me Logan?"
"This time was an accident." Hank turned to view Logan's face seeing the signs of stress. "Do you have the results or not?"
"I do, but I think we should wait for Charles to come down he should be here to-"
"It's not his kid in question, now is it? Tell me the results." Logan spoke threateningly. Noticing Hank's hesitation Logan pulled out his claws inching closer to the beast. " I said tell me."
"Ok ye-yes. She's your daughter." Hank inched back. Logan put his claws away and let out an indefinable sigh.
"Don't tell any of the students this stays between us three understood?" Hank only gave a nod in response, nervous seeing the great Wolverine angry. "Good."
He said heading out to leave.
"Where are you going? Are you not going to wait for the professor?"
"For a drive."
Logan stood in front of the destroyed lab building, looking over the array of destruction and damage that had taken place. It has been four days since the escape but just a few hours since Logan found out about his new daughter. It was uncomfortable how close it was to the actual mansion. There were no bodies outside the building making the clawed mutant believe there was a cover-up. The building was far too damaged to walk in and nothing in there could be salvaged. "Poor kids." Logan grunted remembering his own experience in the lab.
As Logan checked the perimeter, he noticed a picture on the floor. It was not burned and didn't seem to come out of the wreckage, however, there was blood on the upper left corner. Logan picked it up and analyzed it- recognizing it was a picture of the new mutant and a boy. Logan looked at the boy noticing facial similarities between himself and the kid, leading him to believe it was her brother, his son. The brother had an X crossed out on his body while the girl was circled. Logan gruffed realizing that her brother is probably dead and that she will continue to be hunted.
