Prologue: This Life So Unfair

Selesdria

Selesdria learned at an early age that life was not fair.

Life was full of obstacles that prevented people from reaching their goals, sometimes in the middle of life, and others at the end. She, however, had obstacles since she was born. She was born with a fragile health that caused high fevers and weakened her body to the point of not being able to move. The fever was so severe that Selesdria sometimes had to stay in bed for days, unable to leave her room.

This was the majority of her childhood: lying in her bed, suffering from a fever that weakened her body for days, barely being able to speak to anyone except some servants and her parents, who came to visit her from time to time. Selesdria's only friends during those days were books and silence.

In the present it was not much different either.

Selesdria's health had improved, but little, and the fever was still just as relentless. Health was not her only obstacle, but also her magic. Selesdria was born with the ability to manifest magic since she was a baby, but she never had control over it and whenever her magic appeared something bad happened. There was a time when her magic got so out of control that it destroyed an entire room and most of the people who were there were injured. Then she passed out.

When she woke up she found herself inside her bed, with her parents and the High Commission around her, staring at her. Instead of asking her if she was all right or being able to ask them what had happened, her mother, Queen Moon, spoke up. Selesdria was five years old and had just woken up with a fever, migraine and dizziness, but she never forgot what her mother said.

"Selesdria, the High Commission and I have been talking, and we have decided that the best thing for the kingdom is for Star to be the owner of the wand and the future queen."

Selesdria's stomach twisted.

"Star... doesn't have the same problems as you. You are... fragile... unpredictable..."

A lump formed in the girl's throat.

"My dear, I hope you can understand it someday."

No, Selesdria understood it at that very moment. She was like a bomb about to explode without knowing when it will. And to prevent someone from being harmed, she would be replaced by her younger sister. At first, Selesdria became convinced that her health would improve over time and decided to strive to control her magic and prove to everyone that she was fit for the role she was born for: to be a queen of Mewni, a Butterfly.

None of that came true.

It was at age nine that she realized that no matter how hard she tried, she could never control her magic and her fragile health would always make her weak. She couldn't change, that was a fact. So she made a decision. She would centralize her life to the things she was best at: books, studies, arts, and music.

Selesdria thought that dedicating herself with all her soul to what she was good at would allow her to forget about her problems and, although it was a selfish thought, it could somehow make her stand out from Star and somehow draw the attention of her parents.

From the day she was told that Star would be queen, her parents stopped visiting her as much as they used to and focused more on royal duties and their youngest daughter. But how could they not? She was the complete opposite of her weak, sickly and unpredictable eldest daughter. Star was strong, energetic, happy and smiling, always managing to get people's attention in some way.

Instead, Selesdria was quiet, thoughtful, and so calm that she looked like a ghost. Nor did her skin, eyes, and hair tone help. Because of her health and to the risk that her magic was unleashed, she had to stay in the Castle of Butterflies all her life hardly receive sunlight.

Star stood out not only for her personality, but also for what she was capable of. She knew how to fight, ride a warnicorn and talk to people... So, Selesdria thought that she could then stand out with her own abilities and maybe even receive some credit, since some of those were difficult.

That plan didn't work either.

Everyone preferred Star, from her parents to the castle servants. No one was aware of Selesdria's achievements.

It was at the age of eleven that Selesdria decided to stop trying to stand out and accepted that she would never be as loved or remembered as her younger sister. The next five years were devoted exclusively to reading, music and seeking knowledge about the outside world and Mewni's history.

And then the day came. The day Star would receive the wand.

Selesdria had put on a white and cream ankle-length gown with long, wide sleeves, exposing her shoulders and the area above her chest, with a white bow on her chest. The sixteen-year-old girl entered the Throne Room and murmurs were heard all over the place.

"Who is she?"

"Princess Selesdria, the Pale Butterfly."

"Rather the Ghost Butterfly! I've never seen her before..."

"She is very weak and sickly. She cannot leave the castle for her health."

"No wonder her younger sister replaced her..."

Selesdria took a deep breath and stood to the right of her mother, Queen Moon Butterfly, the Undaunted. Moon Butterfly was an attractive woman in her forties, tall, with light blue eyes, very pale blue hair combed into a heart shape, and magenta diamonds on her cheeks. To her left was her husband, King River Johansen, a short, blue-eyed, bald man with a mustache and a long blond beard.

None of the three said anything while everyone waited for Star to arrive. After a while, her mother looked at her strict and somewhat angry.

"Selesdria, where's your sister? She was supposed to be here by now."

"I don't know," Selesdria replied with a shrug.

Selesdria had not seen her sister all morning, and the truth was she was not worried about it. It was not because Selesdria did not love Star, she actually loved her very much, but because their rooms were far from each other and Star was more than capable of taking care of herself.

Noises from outside caught everyone's attention and they looked at the doors. Just as the guards were about to open the gates, Star abruptly entered riding a unicorn. The people in the room screamed in fright as the fourteen-year-old blonde girl headed towards her family. Star jumped, landing in front of Selesdria and their parents as the animal went through the wall.

Star was a girl with light blue eyes, cream-colored skin and sun-blonde hair with pink hearts on her cheeks. The fourteen-year-old girl smiled and gasped, jumping up and down in excitement.

"Now Star, this wand is a big responsibility," Moon Butterfly said seriously.

"Yeah!" Star exclaimed trying to grab the wand but her mother stopped her.

"If it falls into the hands of evil forces, the universe could be destroyed!" Mother warned.

Star snatched the wand from her hands and it changed from the elegant blue and gold scepter with the blue heart-shaped crystal to a light purple with white wings on the hilt and the crystal turned yellow and took the form of a star.

Star gasped as she stared at the wand in pure wonder.

"Don't worry, mom," Star said smiling confidently. "I can handle it."

(A couple of hours later)

Selesdria watched from a window, along with her parents and Glossaryck, how a village in Mewni was on fire and the citizens screamed in terror. The cause had been Star, who had created a flaming giant rainbow above the village. Selesdria couldn't help but feel sorry for all the people in that city.

"She can't handle it," her parents said wearily as they watched the scene with binoculars.

They did not take long to act. When Star returned to the castle, there was already a carriage with luggage, ready to take her away from Mewni.

"Noooo!" Star screamed and fell to the ground. She grabbed her mother's skirt and kept pleading. "I can be good! Please! Don't send me to St. Olga Reform School for Wayward Princesses!"

Star gave a huge scream of horror that made Selesdria cover her ears. 'Why does she always have to mount so much scandal?'

"Sweetheart, we are not sending you there," their assured calmly.

"Oh!" Star rose with relief, smiling.

"Yet," Moon warned, frowning.

"We're sending you to train in a safer dimension; a place called Earth," River said.

"Earth?" Star asked confused.

Selesdria had read about that dimension. It was a place without magic, but very advanced in terms of technology and medicine. 'Maybe the doctors there can help me,' thought Selesdria hopefully, as she watched her mother shoving Star into the carriage.

"Manfred, open the portal!" River ordered the butler.

The butler took out the Butterfly family dimensional scissors and opened a huge portal. Selesdria saw her parents enter the carriage. She was about to do the same, but her mother looked at her.

"Selesdria, you have to stay here," she said.

"What?" Selesdria asked confused.

"You can't leave the castle, remember? It could be bad for you."

"But..."

"Honey, you are very delicate. We don't know how Earth's air will affect your health," her father said.

Selesdria couldn't say anything more because the carriage started to move and went through the portal. The sixteen-year-old girl clenched her jaw and entered the castle with a quick and furious step. The frustration and helplessness she felt made her blood boil. Selesdria entered her room and closed the door, her hands trembling with rage.

"Dammit!" she said clenching her fists.

This had been her chance to see the outside world, to see doctors with more advanced medicinal knowledge than there was in her dimension. The opportunity had been there, before her eyes, but it had slipped through her fingers like sand.

Selesdria suddenly felt a huge headache and felt very dizzy. She wobbled and leaned against her desk table to keep from falling.

"Damn this weak body," she mumbled.

Then the world went black and she felt her body fall to the ground.

When Selesdria woke up she was lying on the cold floor of her room. Her head was spinning and her whole body felt like it was on fire. She tried to get up, but failed and fell to her knees on the ground.

"Come on, you can do it," she told herself.

Selesdria managed to stand up with great difficulty. She staggered, but grabbed onto the table. With trembling steps she walked to the bed and sat on it. The pale blonde haired princess took several deep breaths, bringing her hands to her aching head.

"Why? It's been a week since I've had a fever or dizziness," she whispered, feeling her body boil. "Stop, stop..."

Selesdria crawled across the bed, reached the nightstand, opened a drawer, and pulled out a gold bracelet with green butterfly-shaped gems. She put the bracelet on her left wrist and instantly the pain intensified. She watched the green gems sparkle and the bracelet heat up like iron on fire. Selesdria bit her lower lip to keep from screaming.

When it was all over, Selesdria was curled up on her bed, tears streaming from her eyes. They gave her the bracelet when she was five years old, and every time she had a fever attack she had to put on it, because otherwise, the magic inside her would come out and cause chaos. In return, she suffered horrible pain that ran through her entire body.

After so many years, Selesdria never got used to her fever, dizziness and the pain caused by the bracelet. Her life was practically torture since she was born. It was in these moments when Selesdria wondered if she was dying, and if so, when would the time come? She did not want to die, there were still many things that she wanted to do before that.

"Princess Selesdria," a maid's voice sounds from outside the door. "It is dinner time. The king and queen are waiting for you in the dining room."

"It's already night?" the girl whispered and saw the night sky through the balcony window. "I'm going right away," she raised her voice.

Selesdria listened as the maid walked away. She got up, a little shaky, and left her room. She walked down the hallways until she reached the doors of the dining room. Straightening up, Selesdria took a deep breath and entered.

The dining room was very spacious and elegant. In the center was a long table with three chairs at the sides and three plates full of food. Selesdria sat down, right in front of her mother.

"Selesdria, why did you take so long to come?" Moon asked.

"For nothing, I felt tired, just that," Selesdria answered taking the silverware.

"Have you had a fever again?" Moon asked looking at Selesdria's left wrist.

Selesdria dropped the cutlery and covered the bracelet with the sleeve of the dress. She bit her lower lip to keep herself from cursing in front of her parents. 'Damn it, I forgot to take it off.'

"Honey, is it true?" River asked, stopping to chew on a piece of meat.

"Just a little bit, it's not important."

"Of course it is important!" her mother replied seriously. "You probably got a fever because of the stress of preparing for the ceremony these past few days. Or you may have caught cold at some point."

"Well, the princess sometimes sleeps with the balcony doors open," Mary, a blonde-haired, pink-eyed maid commented as she picked up an empty plate.

"What?" her mother looked at her with a frown.

"Sometimes I am hot at night," Selesdria said quickly. "And I just open them a little bit."

It was not a lie at all. Although she opened them more than she admitted, Selesdria was sometimes hot while she slept and opened the balcony doors or windows to let in fresh air. The other times she would open them so she could sleep while looking at the stars.

"Selesdria, it could be dangerous to your health. What if you catch a cold?"

"I cover myself well with the blankets, mother. Nothing has happened to me," the teenager answered patiently as she tried to trim a piece of fish from her plate.

"Yes, something has happened. You have had a fever."

"But I already said I'm fine," patience was wearing thin. "Can we stop talking about this and have a nice dinner, please?"

Moon seemed to want to say something else, but she stopped herself and finally silence filled the dining room.

"You know what?" her father spoke in an animated tone. "It turns out that Star accidentally burned the village while chasing Tobitt. Haha, maybe he finally has learnt the lesson of not stealing our corn!"

River stopped laughing when he saw Moon looking at him with a frown on her face.

"What?" Selesdria looked up with wide eyes. "Star was attacking Tobitt with the wand?"

"Yes, but we have already told your sister that we sent the knights to take care of him," her mother replied.

"But you said to her that what she has done is wrong, right?" Selesdria asked raising an eyebrow.

"Of course we have. That kind of behavior is not appropriate for a Butterfly."

"I'm talking about her attacking a defenseless person. Didn't you tell her that what she has done is unfair to Tobitt?"

A sudden tension was created in the room. Selesdria watched her father's eyes widen as her mother frowned. Selesdria was not stupid; she knew she had just brought up a touchy subject. She and her parents, particularly her mother, had very different views about the monsters.

"Honey," her father spoke first, "I know you hate violence, but it is the only solution to deal with monsters."

"Violence is not the only way to achieve peace with them," Selesdria said with a serious face.

"Selesdria, do you know why we keep monsters away from the kingdom?" Moon asked.

"For a senseless hatred coming from..."

"Because monsters are dangerous and bloodthirsty," Moon interrupted her, using a tone of voice that showed she was convinced of what she was saying. "They do not hesitate to harm our people and steal our food. It is in their nature to harm others and be cruel."

"It is not in the nature of anyone to harm others," Selesdria replied and looked at the plate in silence for a second. She looked up, her eyes full of determination. "If they are like this it is because of us."

"Selesdria, we've already talked about this," Moon warned.

"It's true," Selesdria was not going to back down. "If it hadn't been for the actions of our people, the monsters wouldn't hate us as much as they do. They sure aren't as bad as you all say."

"Selesdria, you don't know what you're talking about!" Moon raised her voice between shocked and angry. "You have never seen a monster!"

"And whose fault is that?" Selesdria also raised her voice and felt the heat in her body again. "I have never left the castle walls, not even to go to the capital!"

"Selesdria..."

"I also don't know how to fight or ride a unicorn! I have never attended parties, I don't know the other royal families and..."

A sudden pain in the chest interrupted Selesdria. She clenched her jaw and took deep breaths as she watched the gemstones on the bracelet sparkle. 'No, no, no... Not again. I have to calm down; I have to calm down...'

"Selesdria, you are too... fragile!" her mother said, unaware of what was happening to the teenager. "You have absolutely no idea what's out there! If a monster saw you, they wouldn't hesitate to kill you! They are all evil!"

"That's not true. I refuse to believe something like that," Selesdria said quietly. "There is nothing and no one completely evil. Not even the monsters."

"How can you be so sure about something like that? Selesdria, they are all evil!"

"Not all monsters killed grandmother."

There was a sudden silence. Selesdria looked at her mother. The Queen of Mewni looked at her in shock, her eyes slightly filled with tears.

"I know everything. I know what happened to Grandma, and I don't blame you for hating those who caused her death," Selesdria felt her body grow cold and the gems stopped glowing. "I also know that she would have liked to see monsters and Mewmans living together. And I have read about Eclipsa and her monster love; they are the proof that monsters and Mewmans can coexist. I understand your resentment, but if you gave them a chance..."

"Enough of this!" Moon screamed, slapping her hands on the table. "You don't know anything, Selesdria! You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about! Monsters and Mewmans can't coexist! And don't mention Eclipsa again!"

"Why? What did she do to be considered so evil?"

"Is this a joke? Selesdria, she experimented with evil dark magic and betrayed her kingdom to run away with a monster!"

"And that's it?" Selesdria looked at her mother with a frown in disbelief. "That's something everyone knows! It seems to me that they are all exaggerations."

"I'm tired of this! Selesdria, forget about Eclipsa and the silly idea of monsters and Mewmans living together! That is completely impossible!"

"You are wrong! You, the High Commission and everyone else! Eclipsa and her monster lover are proof that it is possible!" the heat and anger were returning. "If you weren't so blind because of your hate and your fear, you could see it!"

"Fear?" her mother narrowed her eyes and looked at her offended.

"Yes, you are afraid, just like everyone else!" Selesdria stood up abruptly, knocking the chair over. "You are all afraid of difference and change, as if you were little children!"

The heat was getting stronger. Selesdria's mind was beginning to cloud and the gems glowed again. Her mother rose from the seat, but more slowly and dominantly.

"Selesdria, sit down."

"What if I don't? What will you do?" Selesdria said quietly, clenching her fists.

"Alright I have had enough!" her mother raised her voice again. Her blue eyes sparkled with anger. "Can you tell what this behavior is about?"

Selesdria has never felt such fury before. Had her mother paid attention to what she had said? She could feel the burning heat running through her entire body.

"It's about everything! Haven't you heard me before?! I can never leave the castle, go to meetings, or do other things like Star does!"

"Selesdria, that's because you are...

"Don't say it! Don't dare you!"

Selesdria felt the pain of the bracelet go all over her body. She fell and writhed on the ground. Her screams filled the dining room. Feeling the same pain twice in the same day was too much for her.

"Selesdria, calm down! Everything will be fine!" her mother screamed, this time filled with concern.

"Selesdria!" her father screamed at her mother's side.

Selesdria didn't want to calm down, she just couldn't. All the frustration, helplessness and fury she felt fought to get out of her body. The pain grew ever more intense and her screams were more deafening. Tears fell from her eyes. The earth shook like an earthquake occurred, and cracks appeared in the ceiling, floor and walls. Selesdria could hear the people in the castle screaming in horror.

"Selesdria, you have to stop!" Moon screamed.

'I can't... I can't do it!' Selesdria thought, writhing on the ground. The gemstones on the bracelet sparkled so brightly that its emerald green light had turned white. The bracelet also glowed, but had turned red and orange, as if it were inside a fire. To her horror and surprise, the pain had become even worse.

Selesdria couldn't take it anymore. She directed her right hand to the bracelet to remove it, but as her fingers brushed against the object it felt as if she had been burned. Selesdria couldn't help but screech in pain. The sound created a shock wave that threw her parents against the wall.

A loud crack and the world turned white.

No one's point of view

The gemstones on the bracelet broke, bursting into a thousand pieces. Selesdria's eyes and the marks on her cheeks glowed brightly. Soon her entire body also shone and a white light came out of her. There was a huge explosion that destroyed the entire place. Moon and River flew outside and ended up on the cold floor of the castle courtyard. People were screaming and running in panic.

The Queen of Mewni rose, moaning in pain. She looked around, searching for her firstborn.

"Selesdria?" she called.

Then she saw her. The silver-blonde haired teenager was limp on the floor, several feet away from her. The blue-haired woman tried to get closer, but was stopped by a sudden noise. Before her eyes, a crack of light formed in the air behind Selesdria. Then the crack grew larger and opened, creating a white portal that spun like a whirlwind.

Selesdria's body was being dragged towards the portal.

"No... No! Wait!" Moon screamed and ran, but it was too late.

The portal absorbed Selesdria and closed.

Selesdria

Selesdria opened her eyes, her vision blurred, but soon everything cleared up. She realized that she was not in Butterfly Castle, but in a forest. Selesdria rose unsteadily. Her whole body ached, but not like when the bracelet reprimanded her magic.

"The bracelet..." she murmured hoarsely.

She looked at her left wrist, but the bracelet was missing. She looked everywhere, but the object was nowhere. There was no one around either. How had she ended up in the middle of the forest? The last thing she remembered was hearing a crack and she felt her magic pouring out of her like a torrent, causing an explosion that knocked her unconscious. Did the explosion throw her into the Forest of Certain Death?

"I have to get out of here," she said taking a shaky step forward. Then she took another and another. "I have to return home..."

Selesdria wandered aimlessly through the woods for what seemed like hours, but must have been minutes. At some point she came to a small cliff full of brambles. Selesdria stepped back, ready to turn around, but tripped over a loose stone and fell forward.

Selesdria rolled and bumped into the spiky brambles. She couldn't help but moan in pain throughout the fall. At last she ended up on the floor. She got up in pain and examined his body. There were small scratches on his arms, legs, and face. Fortunately, it was the dress that had received the most damage. It was broken, dirty, ripped and punctured everywhere, and a shoe must have been left in the brambles during the fall. Selesdria did not care; she preferred to be half barefoot and looking pitiful than having a broken bone or being dead.

Selesdria took off the other shoe and threw it around. Barefoot, exhausted, sore and confused, she walked again. She could only walk to a nearby tree. She leaned against it and dropped to the ground. Darkness surrounded her, and she stopped struggling to stay awake.
