Reith's day was going fine, he was sitting in 7th grade math class taking a test. He was about forty minutes in and still was nowhere near done. His dyslexia made this test way harder on him than all the other kids in his grade. Right when Reith had finally put his answer down he heard the door come crashing down with some of the wall going down with it. Skeletons armed with swords and shields prevailed once the dust settled.
I guess I won't be finishing my test.
The classroom broke into a panic.
Students were running in all directions, some were trying to run out of the room now. Past the skeletons he saw more skeletons and students that managed to get out of their classrooms. Some were trying to run into the back of the room to get the farthest away from these monsters. The teacher had not tried to settle the students down at all, he had joined the students in the panic. He scrambled through his belongings and tried to reach his phone before he was knocked down by the panicked students.
Reith was pushed down by the caos. He was on the ground, unable to get up and not knowing what to do. Finally, he saw a satyr, it was Lyndsey! Reith's friend Lyndsey grabbed his hand and pulled him up. She yelled something but he could not hear it in all the shouting and chaos. As Lyndsey was practically dragging him from across the room, he saw one of the skeletons reaching out to try to grab him. He caught hold of his legs and caught up to Lyndsey.
Once the two were out of the room, they darted through the halls. The pair weaved their way through panicked students. Other classes must have been interrupted too.
When Reith and Lyndsey grew closer to the crammed exit, Reith held onto Lyndsey's arm, his hand shaking. He feared being separated from his friend. The crowd seemed to move so slowly as everyone rushed to the exit. Reith could hear shrieking and screaming as a student was grabbed.
Reith and Lyndsey finally made it out. Reith, still holding Lyndsey's arm, shakily followed the girl as she led him towards the city, where less students were. Lydsey started shouting for a taxi but other students had the same idea. The girl ripped away from Reith's arm and waved her hand around to get the attention of a taxi.
Once the two were in the taxi, Lyndsey frantically checked her wallet to see how much money she had.
"Take us to Long island!" She said. Reith was just sitting there with his bony fingers shaking, clearly scared. He lifted his gaze and looked at Lyndsey.
"What's going on?" Reith questioned. "Do you know about this?" He added. Lyndsey looked down and replied,
" I can explain later just- not now. Once we are safe." Reith couldn't help but think, were the other schools attacked? Was his brother ok? How does Lyndsey know what's going on?
Reith's head jerked up as he heard a familiar yelp. He gazed out the window to see his brother, Malcom pinned onto a wall by a skeleton armed with only a shield. Reith's breath quickened with panic. He shook Lyndsey and pointed.
"Stop the car!" He shouted as he darted out. Lyndsey tried to grab Reith's sweater as he got out of the car. The girl stumbled out of the car after Reith.
Fury burned at Reith's heart. How dare they? Reith sprinted over to the skeleton, gripping their shoulder and yanking them back. The skeleton's grip on Malcom loosened and he fell to the ground, his grape vine crown falling off. Malcom sat on the ground, eye wide and his hands fidgeting.
Reith felt as if he had great strength, as if he was more powerful than anything living. He pulled the skeleton down and stomped on their chest. While the skeleton was stunned, he grabbed Malcom and sat him in the taxi. Reith gave Lyndsey a glare. Why didn't she help? She just stood there, eyes widened!
"Let's go." Reith told the driver. The driver nervously nodded as he continued driving. He had just witnessed this kid save his brother from this crazy skeleton? What else was he capable of?
Reith Held his 12 yr old brother close. He loved his brother more than anything else, he would be devastated without him. When they moved to the United States from Greece, Malcom was practically all he had. After their mom had taught them some of the basics of English they had to do most of their studying on their own. They had always worked together. After they moved they hadn't been able to study english as much as they had when they were in Greece. He missed being able to do this with Malcom. But since they are 2 yrs apart, they have totally different classes. Without their father around, Reith was the one that guided Malcom. Their mother had always said that their father left right before Malcom was born. Reith was fine with this, who needed him? Without Reith being around all the time, he could see Malcom was struggling more than he had used to be.
Reith's fingers ran through Malcom's fluffy, black hair as Malcom buried his face in Reith's sleeve.
"Thank you.." Reith heard Malcom's voice. The boy looked up at Reith. "But I still could have beat him up myself!" He said as he saw Reith's upset look. Reith gave Malcom a small smile as he turned and looked over at Lyndsey. How could she just stand there like that? Lyndsey noticed Reith beginning to give her a look and she looked down at her hands uncomfortably. Her big, curly hair seemed to droop with her curled, ram horns poking out of it.
Reith huffed, looking back down at Malcom, He seemed exhausted. He felt his breath slow as he seemed to be going to sleep in his lap. Reith gave a small smile.
The car stopped as the driver spoke, "We're here." Lyndsey looked up as she pulled out her wallet. The satyr pulled out the money and handed it to the man.
"Thank you so much," Lyndsey spoke as the driver counted the money. He nodded to them as Lyndsey got out of the car and Reith shook Malcom awake.
Reith looked over the land before him, it seemed to be swarmed with these skeletons. Some had children with them and some were walking in groups away from the island, ready to get more. Once Reith, Malcom, and Lyndsey were noticed, skeletons began to head their way, their eye sockets glowed a faint red. Malcom puffed his chest out and stood his ground. He clearly didn't learn that these things were dangerous.
Lyndsey tugged on Reith's arm, "Come on!" Her oval pupils darted about the approaching skeleton soldiers. "You can't be serious! We need to run!" Her voice rose with fear.
Instead of Reith responding, Malcom spoke up,"Shouldn't we figure out what's going on?" He paused as the skeletons marched closer, "How bad could this be?"
Lyndsey gave Malcom a look,"They are skeletons! Who knows where they are from?! Who knows who sent them?!" Her poofy hair bounced as she shook.
Reith watched the two bicker as the soldiers marched closer. He pulled on Lyndsey's shirt as the skeletons were practically towering over the three.
