Chapter Two: The Red Legend
"So, any rule changes I should know of?" Char asked while the Wildvolt Squad made their way to the spectator stands. There were still three races before theirs, so they decided to watch the races to pass the time. Pika pointed to the two teams that were currently racing off on Metal City.
"Each team rallies behind a designated Leader, who can take everyone along their path. For example, if we rallied behind Gale, we could all take the flight rings. We can switch the Leader between three people a race, but if one gets boosted or hit in any way other than a wall, they can't lead again and are knocked out for the rest of the race. The goal is to get through all three laps with more members remaining overall, and the race can even end if one team runs out of members left to race." Pika explained as Char looked like he was about to ask a question before Tye continued on.
"Also, the number of members carries over, so you can be left with just one member left against a team of five!" He explained fearfully as Char looked towards Pika.
"What happens if all the Leaders get eliminated?" Pika shrugged.
"I think that it just means you can't switch the leader out, so you would have to just go with whoever is left to lead until the end of the race." Pika guessed as Grov continued the explanation.
"Other than all of that, they banned lap skips, such as flying behind the finish lap to get really quick laps, but normal skips are just fine." Grov finished off as Char thought it over.
"I see, then we have to just ride fast and win it all out. Gale, we need you for this race for the free level up in the flight route." Char started as Gale smirked, nodding. "Tye, you're also up to get past the train."
"Leave it all to me!" Tye grinned out as Char nodded.
"What about us?" Grov asked as Char looked towards the two of them.
"If I fall, you replace me. I can only shift to Flight type, so if Gale falls, I can cover him in the next race. You both are Speed types, so you'll have to cover for me if that happens." Char explained as Grov smirked knowingly.
"Do they even allow that?" Grov asked as Char grinned, his sharp teeth showing out. Pika groaned while Tye laughed along.
"I already asked them, they said it was okay, but I had to stick to one type per race. Since I'm starting this in Speed, I have to stay in Speed throughout the race." Char explained as Gale sighed with an annoyed face.
"You're hoping I get knocked out, aren't you?" Gale asked as Char shook his head.
"We need as high a chance as we can get. No knock outs can lead us to victory. Even if they lead, it's whoever has the least amount of racers remaining." Char explained as the others agreed.
"So we're going with your favorite?" Grov asked with an expressionless face as Char nodded, his grin still on.
"Hit hard and lead farther! If we keep the lead with more people, we can win it all!" Char said as they all heard laughter from the spectator stands. Char shrugged before ignoring it, "As long as we-" He tried saying as the laughter rang again, louder than before.
"Geez, imagine being that short-minded! This is the so-called Red Legend? Must've been a fluke, you winning with this hunk of junk!" The crowd surrounded the speaker as Char growled while grabbing his Extreme Gear.
"I'm pretty sure we weren't talking to you, so butt out!" Char shouted as she laughed once again.
"Not sure that I care, but Jet wanted me to check you out. 'We'll win it all!' HA! You won't even get through the first round!" The crowd laughed with her this time as Grov scoffed, getting up and moving past Char.
"What do you want? We're just here to watch the match, and the noise doesn't help with that. Hard to watch the race when pigs are squealing on the side." Grov asked as the crowd seemed to be pushed aside, revealing a pink swallow glaring at him.
"P-PIG!?" She shouted indignantly as Grov nodded.
"What else exists to do nothing but waste space?" Grov said as sparks seemed to fly between them, even Char looked a tad nervous watching it as he walked towards them.
"Well, well, well! Look at what trash walked in!" She grinned as Char simply looked unimpressed, rolling his eyes at the antics.
"Whatever," He said as he dragged Grov back to where they were standing by the collar of the jacket. "So out starting line up...Should we have Gale start off or me in order to reach the high route…" Char started explaining, ignoring the swallow completely.
"Hello! I'm still here you know!" The swallow scoffed as Char looked back to the race below. Seeing the lap counter from the big screen tick three, he smirked.
"The team in second will win." He said as Pika grinned.
"Yup!"
"How so?" Grov asked as Char looked back towards him, but was pushed out of the way.
"Hey! What's the big idea!" He yelled as he got up from the ground, dusting himself off and glaring at the swallow who pushed him.
"Sorry, I must have tripped." The swallow 'apologized', but the tone was far from sincere, "I must have tripped on this hunk of junk." She continued, holding the Red Legend in her hands. Char let out a tsk as he grabbed his Extreme Gear from her hands, checking it over and noticing a red button on the back of it. Char picked it up in his paw and crushed it in front of her. The swallow tsk'd back.
"Tripping involves you trying to sabotage me? Give me a break! Get out of my sight!" Char growled out as he threw the shards at her feet.
"My name's Wave, remember that when we beat you!" Wave introduced as Char growled again, tail flame flickering blue as he did.
"I don't care! Just go!" Char growled out as wisps of flame leaked from his mouth. Pika and the others also stood at the ready, causing tension to fall upon the spectators watching as it happened. Wave merely tsk'd as she stormed off. As soon as she turned around to walk away, the race finished. Like Char and the others had predicted, the team in second place won by having two more members left. Even though they crossed late, first place had lost by the second lap because they couldn't risk slowing down to hit the other team. Char made to get up.
"You okay?" Pika asked as Char sighed and shrugged.
"Too crowded, I want to get some practice in before the race starts. Unlike you guys, I haven't been on an Extreme Gear in the last year. I'll talk to you all in a bit, 'kay?" Char said as he waved goodbye, clutching the Red League in his hand and made to leave.
"Hey wait!" Pika shouted as Char looked back, fumbling back as he caught the walkie-talkie from earlier, nearly dropping it as a result, "That way we can keep in touch!" Pika grinned as Char nodded.
"Yeah, I'll be practicing in Red Canyon, just in case we're in the B block." Char said before heading out. Putting the walkie-talkie in his jacket pocket, he looked to his Red League as he walked down the stairs in order to head to the practice hall, "Been a while huh…?" He mumbled aloud before walking into someone, "Oh! Sorry about that!" He apologized as the blue hedgehog smiled and waved his hand from the ground where he fell over. Char immediately helped him up.
"Hey, don't worry about it! You're Char, right? I hope you manage to save your friend, but I'm not going to just let you win!" The hedgehog grinned, and Char couldn't hide his.
"Good! I like a good race, and if I'm saving Cliff, I'll make sure I do it right and wasn't just given the wins!" Char grinned fully as the hedgehog gave a thumbs up.
"I'm Sonic, Sonic the Hedgehog, what about you?" Sonic introduced.
"Char, Char the Charmeleon." Char introduced, much to the confusion of Sonic.
"Charmeleon? Like the Pokémon?" Sonic asked as Char nodded, pointing to the flame on the end of his tail.
"It's more an inside joke with my friends." Char grinned, "I'm somewhat of a mutant, since I was born with a steady grasp on fire that lit the end of my tail when I was born. I'm actually a lizard, hence the joke." Char admitted while Sonic snickered a bit.
"Guess you have your trainer, huh?" Sonic joked as Char shrugged.
"Maybe I'm my own trainer?" Char smirked, "Jokes aside, I take it you're taking part in the tournament as well?" Char asked as Sonic nodded.
"Yeah! I was asked here to celebrate the anniversary of the first Grand Prix, as well as the first Team Grand Prix being this year. I take it that you're here for the ten-thousand ring grand prize huh?" Sonic asked as Char sighed.
"Yeah...When it comes down to it, Cliff doesn't have much time left...I'm just scared that I'll freeze up when it matters most…" Char admitted, unable to meet Sonic's gaze, "I...I just keep reliving what happened in mind. He looked…so terrified as he fell off. And it was because of my turbulence that he fell off to begin with.." Char continued, eyes glazed over as the memories filled his mind again until Sonic put his hand on Char's shoulder, snapping him out of it. Char stared at Sonic.
"That….that sucks buddy. I really hope he wakes up from that coma," Sonic explained with a sorrowful voice before sighing, "Hey, I was just heading on over to check on the match, what about you?" Sonic asked, changing the topic as Char gave a small smile.
"I haven't been on my Extreme Gear in about a year now, so I was just going to practice while waiting on my match." Char explained as Sonic gave a thumbs up.
"Then let's race! I wasn't able to face the so-called Red Legend last year, so how about we do a lap 'round the track?" Sonic asked with a grin. Char merely sighed.
"I just said I haven't practiced in about a year, doubt it would really be a contest." Char said dismissively while Sonic shrugged.
"Suit yourself, how about I watch you practice and try to give you tips?" Sonic asked instead as Char's smile grew a bit.
"Sure, I'll like that." Char said as Sonic followed him to the practice hall. Setting it to Red Canyon, Char smiled as he walked to the starting area and held the Legend in his hand.
"Five...four…" Char counted down, walking back as the gate stood still, glowing with the electricity, "Three….two…" He continued, starting to run forward with the line closing on in. "One." He finished as he threw his gear forward, rushing out the gate immediately with a burst of speed that he used to start drifting into the first turn. Hitting an item box, he was annoyed at only getting air back as he used the drift for some extra speed while entering the cave. The legend glowed as he reached the ramp, and he just let it do its thing as he flipped backwards, a peaceful smile on his face as he then turned left to land an S ranked trick, using the speed to drift right into a ring box of twenty rings before reaching the first quick time area, as he carefully dodged the rocks before being launched high in the air. Tail sparking from the amount of water around as Char grinned. It was like the moment froze around him, and then he was crashing on down to the ground, water spreading around as he boosted onto the grind rail. Deciding against the other rail, he aimed down and grabbed another twenty ring box to reach level two as he drifted left into the second quick time event. After it was done, he just let the Red Legend do what it was best as, flipping forward to hit the high route and boosting off to finish off the lap with a grin upon his face despite how he had just been complaining about them earlier that day. He looked to the spectator stands, drifting left as he jumped off the Red Legend. "So, what do you think?" He asked as Sonic grinned back with a quick thumbs up.
"That was tight! It looked like you could have added more tricks, but your ring collecting definitely needs work." Sonic explained as Char smiled and nodded.
"Thanks, my Red Legend does its job well, I guess I still need to try and memorize my ring routes again. So...which tournament are you in?" Char asked as Sonic shrugged.
"Tails handled all the registration stuff, but I think we're in both of them." Sonic explained, much to Char's surprise.
"Both of them? I thought that they both took place at the same time, that you were forced to choose between one of the two." Char asked out of confusion. Sonic merely wagged his finger back and forth in response, a smirk on his face.
"Nope! They take place on different days. Today is the team tournament's first four rounds, ending in a race on Green or White Cave for A or B block, then tomorrow would be the single tournament's first four rounds. Afterwards, the finals on Sand Ruins would happen on the third day for both tournament sets and would match the winners up against one another." Sonic explained as Char blinked.
"You know about all of that, and still can't tell the tournament you are in?" Char asked as Sonic looked away with a nervous laugh of embarrassment. Char groaned as a two-tailed fox rushed into the practice hall.
"SONIC!" The fox cried as Char watched in confusion as Sonic looked towards the fox, "Quick! People are in danger!" He continued as both Char and Sonic jumped into action, focusing on what was truly important. Char rode his gear towards the fox, with Sonic jumping over the spectator stand and falling into the turbulence, riding with his Blue Star II to meet back up as Tails rushed on past with the two right behind.
"What's happening?" Char turned on the walkie-talkie and talked urgently, but grunted in annoyance when all he heard was plain static.
"It's bad! The second race was starting when a robot crashed into the race, and then started shooting at everyone! If this keeps up, the tournaments will be toast!" The fox cried out as Sonic nodded.
"Okay Tails, let's do this! We gotta get them evacuated!" Sonic said as Tails nodded.
"Knuckles and Storm are already working on it, with Wave helping get everyone out safely!" Tails said as Char spoke up.
"What about Tye and the others!? They can stay and help out!" Char said, looking more worried than the others, and unlike Tails, Sonic didn't look that surprised at the reason behind it.
"Don't worry Char, no one's getting hurt on our watch!" Sonic said as Char shook his head.
"You don't know that! Hell, does anyone know where this robot came from!?" Char said, panicking as they rushed past the long hallway leading to the spectator's stand, Char nearly hitting a wall as Sonic pulled his paw into the turn.
"I do know that, because we're going to stop it together!" Sonic grinned as Char took a deep breath, not completely convinced as to it, but ready as they rushed up the stairs into the arena.
Metal City was in ruins, as giant holes were blasted into certain stand areas, much to Char's shock as he saw Tye helping out two others were breaking through giant pieces of rubble blocking the way to get out. Char grabbed the walkie talkie once again as it finally clicked to life with a connection.
"...-har DO YOU HEAR ME!?" Char heard Pika's voice desperately shouting as Char grinned.
"Pika! We're here!" Char answered back as sighs of relief were heard.
"Thank god, we were getting worried about you!" Pika admitted as Char nodded as he got off his Extreme Gear as Tails slowed down. The robot was massive, feet about the track-wide and his body even wider. Char couldn't help but gulp as he looked at it in horror.
"W-What can we do about that? That thing is gigantic!" Char panicked as he looked towards Sonic, seeing him look at it with a look of determination.
"We can beat it up!" Sonic said seriously as Char's eyes widened.
"What!? With what!?" Char replied as Sonic grinned.
"Tails!" Sonic said, as Tails grabbed what looked to be some crystal-cut gems from a secret compartment that Char couldn't even see. "Alright, now we'll show that thing to not mess with us!" Sonic said as the gems started revolving around Sonic, much to Char's amazement and horror as they also started revolving around himself.
"Wait, why are they revolving around me too!?" He said as he clutched his head, the reality a blur for a few seconds as flame spread in front of him. "Where am I?" He asked as he looked around the lifeless hall that now surrounded him.
Who are you? A voice echoed around with no direction. Char looked around, trying to find any shred of evidence to it.
"My name is Char Mosirren! I got to save my friends or else they might die! So let me out of here!" Char cried out as the voice echoed again.
Don't be afraid. It said as Char tried to object once more, but couldn't as he clutched his head once more. The flame on his tail swelled into a bright blue as he screamed, the flame surrounding him and consuming him. Before he knew it, he was back in Metal City, as if no time had passed.
Sonic had turned a bright and brilliant yellow, and seemed to not be the only one staring at Char in shock. Char looked down, seeing the brilliant blue-ish orange aura that surrounded himself. Not bothering to ask questions as he saw the robot starting to walk, he jumped in with the Red Legend in his hand as Sonic jumped alongside him, the two rushing towards to meet the robot in battle.
"It's time for you to go back from where you came!" Char yelled as he got on the Red Legend, watching the aura pass through it. "HERE WE GO!" He yelled as Sonic nodded towards him.
"FULL BOOST!" The two shouted while they shot off towards the giant robot, who was made helpless as the two blasted through it at maximum speed, nearly tearing it apart as the two drifted back around. Sonic grabbed one of the Chaos Emeralds from the air as Char growled, flame glowing as he took a deep breath.
"FLAMETHROWER!" He yelled as he shot out what looked to be a beam of dark blue flames that rushed at the back of the robot, nearly melting it as it fell over, Char was knocked back from the force of it and fell off the Red Legend as a result, but Sonic rushed towards it.
"CHAOS CONTROL!" He yelled as the robot's foot started to glow, being teleported away and leaving it with no way to move other than hopping. It started to try to explode as Sonic and Char looked in shock.
"LOOK OUT!" Char yelled as he tried rushing back to it, but was blasted away to the wall from the resulting explosion, knocking him out instantly.
"-har, Char! I think he's waking up guys!" Char groggily picked out Pika's voice, feeling everything hurt in his body as he slowly opened his eyes. "He's awake!" Pika cried as Char looked in confusion.
"What….happened? All I remember was this...power flowing through me, and beating up that robot before…" Char said as his eyes widened from fear, "Is everyone okay!?" He shouted, grunting in pain as Pika moved him back down onto the bed.
"Easy, easy! We managed to get everyone away in time, other than you, only one other person was hurt and that was Sonic. He managed to wake up a while ago, so we were really worried." Pika explained as Grov walked forward.
"You okay?" Grov asked as Char groaned a bit.
"Just...peachy." He said, still in pain all the while.
"Then be glad." Grov said as Char nearly growled at him before he continued, "They delayed the race by a day, so you'll have time to rest up." He continued with a smile as Char blinked. "What, you thought I believed yah? I can tell you're in pain galore, you got blasted through a wall!" Grov continued as Char looked for his jacket, only for a small frown to reach his face.
"Sadly your jacket got destroyed in the explosion." Gale walked up next, holding the ripped tatters that used to be Char's jacket before throwing them away along with the broken remnants of the green walkie-talkie. "But, we asked the higher-ups, and they agreed to us getting you a new one, so he'll be stopping by to measure you."
"Wait, HIM!? Oh please no, not again..." Char whined for once as Gale grinned.
"Aww, what's wrong Char? You don't want to see your friend?" Gale asked as Char groaned.
"It just...feels weird." Char said to the laughter of his friends.
"Can't say he doesn't get good work done!" Tye came in next with a grin, seeming to be resisting hugging Char. "Besides, you're okay, and that's all that matters." Tye said as the others nodded.
"Yeah...wish I could explain what happened a bit better." Char sighed out as a knock came from the hospital doorway. Char blinked as he looked around the room, noting that his tail was through some type of hole in the bed, and seemed to be resting on something to prevent fires, much to his annoyance, seeing wires and plugs into him to display his...information or something? He couldn't tell but it looked important. The room was small and mostly blank from anything other than pure white walls as the group barely managed to all fit in the room.
"Hey! Is he finally awake?" Char heard Sonic asked from the edge of the room.
"Yes, but only so many people can be in here at a time, give us a minute and we'll head on out." Gale explained as Char saw what looked to be a thumbs up. Gale looked back towards him, "Just focus on getting better, okay? The day here should be enough since there didn't seem to be any lasting damage. For some reason, the flame on your tail seems to have changed color, and it's releasing something that's accelerating your healing process." Gale said as Char blinked.
"Wait, the flame is healing me?" Char asked as Gale nodded.
"No one's able to explain it, well, other than Sonic and the rest of his team. Apparently you absorbed the energy of the Chaos Emeralds somehow, and that it's changed your body as a result." Gale explained as Char groaned, hitting his pillow with his horn.
"Great…" He moaned out in annoyance as Tye smiled.
"Well, it doesn't really matter to me, you're alright and no one got hurt, all's well that ends well right?" Tye asked as Char shook his head.
"Not even close." Char said as they all looked towards him, "We have no idea who even sent the robot, and we got lucky that time, but what happens if two robots are sent, hell what happens if one hundred are sent? We need to stop it at its source or everyone will continue to be at risk and danger. As I said, we got lucky this time, but we need to not test that luck again." Char explained as they nodded.
"I'll start monitoring frequencies and see if I can gather any intel." Gale started.
"I'll make some rounds, see if anyone has any information on it, hit up a few friends of mine." Grov continued on.
"I'll ask around here, see if anyone has an idea of who it could be." Pika continued as another knock rang from the door.
"Hey, you all are friends of Char, right?" Tails asked as he flew on above them, landing in front of him. "I saw that you were still using walkie-talkies to communicate, so I wanted to try and give you all cell phones. They're a bit outdated, but they should still help you out. On top of that, we want to try and help you find out who did it." Tails said as he handed the phones out, much to the amazement of the others
"Sure, the more help, the merrier!" Tye grinned out as the others nodded along. "Thanks for the new tech, it's sure to help us out, I'll be helping clear the debris from the track, see if I can't find any clues to what happened." Tye continued on as Tails nodded.
"I'll go with you then, see if I can't try and take a look at the thing and see from there." Tails said as Char smirked.
"Then I'll just rest alongside Sonic, see if we can't get better to try and help you guys out." Char said as they all agreed.
"Yeah, let's do it! I already set our phones up so we can keep in touch, so just let us all know if you find something." Tails said with a grin as Char opened up his phone, liking the red case, and sent a text.
Good luck. It read as the phones rang in union, confirming that they all got it. "No need to worry Char, we got this!" Tye said as they started leaving the room, letting Sonic in all the while. Sonic was still bound to crutches as he walked in the room.
"Yesh, you look worse for wear." Sonic said bluntly as Char narrowed his eyes.
"Yeah and you look slow to the take." Char answered back just as bluntly, much to the amusement of them both.
"How...did you go super?" Sonic asked, a bit more serious as he took a seat in the chair nearby. Char did his best to shrug. "How did it feel?" Sonic asked as Char sighed.
"I was...trapped in this room with this voice, flame all I could see around me. It consumed me whole and well, you saw the rest. It was just saying to not be afraid and all that filled my head afterwards was that my friends were in danger. I didn't feel an ounce of fear, like I could do everything and that I already knew what to do to save them. The only time I felt fear was at the end, where I saw it starting to explode. What was the deal with that Chaos Control thing you did?" Char explained as best as he could, before asking.
"Well...the Chaos Emeralds are insanely powerful, but you need to be a conductor of Chaos energy to make use of it, with the Super emeralds not really needing that, but strengthening the connection of the Chaos energy." Sonic started going into a long winded explanation as Char could do nothing more but stare, none of the information registering in his mind.
Chaos Energy? Why...do I feel like I heard that before? Char thought to himself, a memory resurfacing as the pieces snapped. "Wait...is flame a type of Chaos power?" Char asked as Sonic shrugged.
"The only time I saw someone using flame, she was the princess of another dimension." Sonic said as Char looked at him funny. Sonic panicked slightly, "I'm not kidding! It's a long story of how I met her, but she came when her Extreme Gear fed off the power of her Sol Emeralds!" Sonic explained as Char motioned him to go on, "She says that the flame is like its own entity, fueling her to do better, but trying to take control often." Sonic said as Char looked at the beginning of confusion again.
"Well...it didn't feel like it wanted to take control, but it just wanted to...watch." Char tried to explain as the faint feeling of it reached him, "It felt…like swelling power from deep inside of me filled my body and tried consuming me, but it..couldn't." Char continued, remembering how he seemed to just appear back in reality afterwards. "I...I wish I could give you a better explanation." Char apologized as Sonic waved it off.
"Don't worry about it, in all honesty, this is way more interesting than sitting in a hospital room all alone." Sonic said as he looked to be thinking of something. "Say, why were you getting all fussy about getting a new jacket?" Sonic asked as Char groaned.
"Because I don't like having someone psychic on me! It's weird!" He whined as a knock rang.
"Psychic?" Sonic asked as the door opened as a albino hedgehog walked on in, his quills sticking up straight and away rather than back and normal. Both Char and Sonic recognized him, and both gave different reactions to his presence.
"Oh great.../Silver!?" The two reacted simultaneously as Silver walked in, readjusting some armbands he had on.
"Hey Char, so I heard your jacket fell apart?" Silver greeted as Char sighed.
"More like, blew up in a dreadful explosion?" Char clarified as Silver looked shocked.
"Wait what? I was just visiting from the future and we have no history of that happening!" Silver said as Char sighed.
"I...may have used the Chaos Emeralds?" Char continued as he sank into the pillows by the glare that Silver sent his way.
"I warned you not to!" Silver said as Sonic looked massively uncomfortable.
"I had no choice! Blame that one!" Char said, pointing to Sonic to get Silver's glare off of him. Sonic gulped as the glare redirected towards him.
"Leave it to you to do that, great now the future's at risk again!" Silver groaned, annoyed at his efforts being wasted.
"How is it at risk?" Sonic asked as Char answered.
"Apparently now my body is a ticking time bomb of Chaos Energy unless I somehow use the Sol Emeralds and Chaos Emeralds simultaneously to stabilize it." Char explained as Sonic sat up completely straight.
"WAIT WHAT!?" He shouted as he went into a coughing fit, much to the annoyance of Char.
"Yeah, and he is said to blow up by the end of the event if we don't change things. Apparently you all get out alive but Char...well." Silver struggled to not say it but Char shrugged.
"If I die, I die." Char said simply, much to the shock of the two of them. "What matters is that we wake Cliff up, and we make sure none of my friends also die." Char said with a nod, "I knew the risks going in, but...I can't just not continue." Silver sighed.
"I know, I know, but…I made a promise to Blaze that I won't let you die, and as much as I don't want to do this, I'll have to go through time to help you." Silver said as Char looked in confusion.
"Wait, wouldn't that mean you already did what you're thinking of doing?" Char asked as Silver sighed.
"Kinda? Time is stupid, but I'll have to find the right area to find her. Blaze doesn't like risking the Sol Emeralds outside the Sol dimension, but it's the only way to save you and stop what's going to happen." Silver explained as Char groaned.
"You're right, that does sound stupid." Char deadpanned. Silver merely shrugged.
"It's a loop, so I just have to find the right section of the loop in order to change the future for the better." Silver explained as he looked towards Char. "Now about your measurements…" He said as Char paled.
"Please don't." Char pleaded as Silver levitated him into the air, removing the wires as he did. Char didn't look at all pleased as Silver looked around.
"Hmm...okay there we go." Silver said as he lowered him back down.
