Chapter Two
Masen/Swan Residence
I glanced over at Edward briefly before I pulled my t-shirt over my head and gathered my hair up into a ponytail.
I sat on the edge of our bed and pulled my trainers on, only to be startled when cold fingers ran over my hip.
I turned to see Edward on his side, the sheet having fallen to his waist and a sexy smile on his face.
"Sorry," I leaned over and pecked his lips. "I didn't mean to wake you."
"You didn't."
"I'll be home just after lunch - I've only got the morning shift." Unable to resist, I gave him another kiss, Edward placing his hand on my cheek to keep me close.
"I have to go," I mumbled half-heartedly against his lips.
"I don't want you to."
That made me smile. "It's not for long - don't be a baby."
I used that moment to slip from his grasp. Standing from the bed I tucked my phone into my pocket.
"I'm not a baby - I'm a man," Edward boasted.
I giggled and headed for the door. "When I get back you can show me just how much of a man you are!" I blew him a kiss and as I walked down the stairs I heard his chuckle.
I was so glad he was home. I had missed him while he had been away and whilst it had only been for two nights, it struck me just how much I loved him. I loved being around him and sharing my days with him.
I really did love Edward Masen.
Nessie sat up in her bed in frustration. She had been trying to sleep for the last four hours - and nothing. She'd tried listening to music, counting sheep, reading, watching a boring documentary. Nothing was working.
Tired of not sleeping (the irony was not lost on her), Nessie decided to go downstairs and see if a warm cup of Tru blood wouldn't help. She didn't particularly fancy any but she was willing to try anything at this point.
She slipped out of bed and put on her fluffy boots, stopping when she heard the floorboards of the stairs creeping.
"Bella?" She quickly finished putting her boots on and went into the hallway. "Bella?" she called again, not quite sure why she would have come back home this early.
Not getting a response, she sniffed the air, Bella's scent was old. The only other scent she could smell was Edward's.
Nessie headed downstairs and stopped when she saw Edward stood in the middle of the foyer, stock still, his pale back to her. He was wearing some pyjama bottoms and that was it.
"Edward?" she gently called. "Is everything alright?" He didn't respond. He didn't move.
She placed a hand on his shoulder but he still didn't move.
Nessie cautiously moved in front of him where she found him, his eyes closed.
She pressed on his shoulder, trying to get a response out of him, but he didn't flinch. His eyes didn't open.
Huh… she didn't know that vampires can sleepwalk.
"Come on," she coaxed. "Let's get you into bed." She took his hand and his arm and was able to lead him back up the stairs to his bedroom.
She put him to bed and pulled the covers up to his chest, making sure he was comfortable.
Something about seeing him like that made her uneasy, so Nessie went into the corner of the room where the grey armchair was and curled herself up, tucking her legs under her body.
She rested her elbow on the chair and placed her face in her palm, eyes trained on the bed.
Something wasn't right.
Bella
I pulled up outside Edward's house… well, our house now and let out a deep breath, taking a few moments to just be.
Work had been interesting, to say the least.
As Tyler had decided to just vanish into thin air, that left Jake without a cook. Esme was currently filling in, but only part-time as she had Ethan. This meant we were down a waitress and effectively, half a cook. Jake was in the process of looking for a full-time cook but until then, all of us waitresses were busy.
This was not something Victoria coped well with. Being busy didn't suit her - it didn't leave much time for flirting. She wasn't the greatest at her job, to begin with, add in having to do actual work and… it was a miracle that Black's was still standing!
I grabbed my bag out of my truck and got out, making sure to lock it before I entered the house, kicking off my shoes the second I got into the doorway and dropping my bag on the sideboard.
I headed into the kitchen and grabbed myself a bottle of water before going upstairs to see if Edward was awake and ready to show me how much of a man he was (I may have thought about this once or twice at work earning me an eye roll from Rose).
When I entered the bedroom I was surprised to see Nessie sat in the armchair. Her legs were tucked up underneath her body and her head was resting on her hand, eyes closed as she was unnaturally still.
I spared a quick look at Edward; he looked fine. So why was Nessie in our bedroom?
I quietly walked over to her and gently shook her shoulder, calling out her name as I did so.
"Nessie? Nessie - is everything alright?"
Her eyes fluttered open, sleep evident as she sat bolt upright and looked around the room, her eyes instantly going to the bed.
"What's going on?" I asked, concern filling me.
She closed her eyes tight and then reopened them, clearing the sleep from her brown orbs.
"Um… Edward was sleepwalking," she stretched her entire body, arms reaching for the ceiling. "I thought it was a bit strange so I came in here to keep an eye on him."
My eyes went to Edward. He was fast asleep, not at all bothered by our exchange.
"Has he been alright?"
"Yeah." She yawned. "Once I put him back to bed he didn't stir a wink."
"I didn't know vampires could sleepwalk," I mused.
"Me either." Nessie rubbed her sleepy eyes but I could still see she was tired.
"Why don't you get a few more hours? The sun's still up so you'll feel the effects of it. I'll wake you this evening."
"Are you sure?"
I nodded. "Go on - I'll be fine."
Nessie gave me a grateful smile and left our bedroom, leaving me alone with Edward.
I fished my phone out of my pocket and put it on the nightstand before climbing into bed next to him. The fact that he hadn't woken during our exchange was strange enough - usually, he always sensed when I was near and woke.
I lay down next to him and traced my hand over his pale face, cupping his cheek in my hand.
Wanting to be closer, I placed my head next to his shoulder and closed my eyes. A short nap wouldn't do me any harm.
It was a few hours later when Edward finally awoke. I had already woken from my nap myself, woke Nessie for her shift at Black's and done some small chores around the house.
I was currently curled up next to Edward with a book in my lap.
First, his eyes fluttered open, wincing at the light from the bedside lamp before he stretched his whole body, fingers reaching towards the headboard and toes pointing towards the end of our bed.
He took a deep breath and then released it (force of habit I suspected) before he turned and gave me a sleepy smile.
"Evening," he murmured, his brain still filled with sleep.
"Good evening," I greeted, placing my finger in between the pages of my book so I wouldn't lose where I was as I leaned over and kissed him. "Did you sleep okay?"
"Like a log." He rubbed his eyes. "I feel I could do it all again."
I gently stroked my finger over his cheekbone, a question on the tip of my tongue. I wasn't sure if I was going to ask it until Edward looked hard at me.
"What's wrong?" He knew me so well.
"Nessie said she caught you sleepwalking."
Edward's eyebrows raised.
"Sleepwalking?"
I nodded. "That's what she said. She put you back to the bed and then sat with you."
"Vampires don't sleepwalk, love."
"Apparently you do."
Edward's eyebrows remained furrowed.
"Did anything bad happen at work?"
"Nope - Victoria was irritating as always but that's it."
"Maybe I sensed your irritation and was trying to find you?" he suggested although he didn't sound convinced himself.
"Aw," I pressed a kiss to his nose. "Even in your sleep you try and rescue me."
Edward's long fingers framed my face. "I will always try and rescue you, Bella - I walked through the sun for you, remember?"
Remember I did. It may have been a few years ago now but I could never forget, seeing him walk towards me and burn… despite being sweet it was a memory I would rather not have.
"That seems like so long ago."
Edward nodded in agreement. "For you, it was, for me - well I've been around a long time. A few years is nothing."
I smiled. "Ever since then life has been crazy, hasn't it?" We'd sure been through a lot. My grandfather dying, a serial killer, a manaed, a crazy fae-obsessed vampire, a delusion queen and witches - we'd had our fair share of drama.
"I sometimes wonder if I should have just left you alone," Edward whispered. "If I hadn't of come into your life maybe this wouldn't have happened."
"True," I placed a hand on his chest and pushed myself up so I was looking at him. "But then I wouldn't be with you right now and I wouldn't be half as happy as I am." My fingers stroked over his chest where his heart would have been beating. "I'm so thankful you came into my life and I wouldn't change the way things happened; not for one single second."
Edward gave me a brilliant smile and pulled me down, kissing me hard on the lips.
What I said was completely true - I wouldn't change a thing.
McCarthy Residence
Rose pushed her face into the pillow in an effort to stifle her moans - but Emmett wouldn't allow it.
His hand left her hip and he turned her face away from the pillow, giving her a deeper thrust.
"Let me hear you, Rosie," he whispered into her ear. "I want to hear how good I make you feel."
Rose keened and turned her head to face him, using one of her hands to pull him to her and kiss him.
They were both on their sides, Emmett behind Rose as he thrust into her, pleasuring her. It was slow and sweet. His plan was to tease her all night long, have her coming for her for as long as possible until the sun rose. Pleasuring her was his favourite activity.
One hand squeezed her breast and Rose pulled her mouth away from Emmett's to let out a deep moan, clenching her eyes shut as her thighs clenched and her heart pounded in her chest.
Emmett buried his face in her neck and his fangs scraped her skin. He wanted a taste.
He sucked the skin of her neck into his mouth when suddenly, the ringing of his phone brought him out of the lust induced haze he was in.
He groaned into her neck and swore, thrusting as he waited for the ringing to stop.
When it didn't, Emmet swore and disentangled himself from Rose, muttering about something. She couldn't really hear him over the sound of her heart pounding through her chest and her laboured breathing. They had just been getting to the good bit.
She didn't move, hopeful Emmett would be back inside her soon.
"Hello?" she heard him bark down the phone followed by a loud muffled voice on the other end. She closed her eyes, imaging Emmett's arms around her.
"Wait, slow down, Bella." Rose's eyes pinged opened and she rolled herself over so she facing her naked boyfriend. She heard his fangs click back up and she watched him with worry on her face.
"Okay - I want you to close the bedroom door and go into the living room, alright? Get Liam or Diego to sit with you and the other one to go up to the bedroom. Tell them not to do anything just stop Edward if he tries to leave." She heard Bella's muffled voice once more before Emmett put the phone down and grabbed the pair of jeans he had been wearing earlier.
"What's going on?" Rose asked, sitting up and clutching the bedsheet to her chest.
"Edward's having a bad dream and Bella can't get him to wake up. He's lashing out." Emmett's eyes scanned the floor for his t-shirt and jacket.
Rose jumped out of bed and began to pull on some clothes too - an old t-shirt of Emmett's she had commandeered, some fresh underwear and sweats.
"What do you think you're doing?"
"Getting dressed so I can come with you."
He opened his mouth and she held a hand up. "Don't fight me on this Emmett. Bella's my cousin."
"Fine," he grumbled, pulling his shoes on as he passed her some boots.
When they were both dressed they walked out onto the front porch where Emmett took Rose into his arms.
"Hold on," he warned her before jumping up into the air and flying them over to Bella and Edward's home.
When they landed, Rose heard a loud smash. Emmett made sure she was stable on the ground before he ran inside and up the stairs in a blur.
Rose headed for Bella.
Bella was sat in the living room, Liam stood next to her as she looked fearfully at the ceiling.
"What's going on?" Rose asked.
"Oh, Rose!" Bella cried, standing up and receiving a much-needed hug from her cousin. "It's Edward - I think he's having a bad dream or something. He said he felt tired and wanted an early night so we went to sleep and he woke me up shouting." Tears had formed in her eyes. "He kept shouting my name and then his fangs came down and he began to cry. He then got violent and smashed one of the nightstands." She swept at her face where a stray tear at fell. "That's when I rang Emmett."
"It's going to be alright," Rose comforted, pulling Bella into her arms as they tried to ignore the loud noises coming from above them.
Emmett raced up the stairs, blurring to Edward and Bella's bedroom door where he found Diego hovering anxiously.
"How long has he been like this?"
"Five minutes or so…" Diego eyed the door with fear. "We came in when we heard him shouting."
"Nothing has come in or out of that room?"
Diego shook his head. "No."
"Good." Emmett placed his hand on the doorknob and prepared to enter. "Stay here," he ordered Diego.
Emmett slowly opened the door and was met with carnage. The bedside table had been smashed, the bed covers were on the floor and even two of the feather pillows had been ripped to shreds, feathers coating the room. Edward was stood in the middle, eyes closed and red tears streaming down his cheek. There were red marks all over his chest where Emmett assumed he'd clawed at himself.
He approached his brother cautiously, unsure of what state he was in.
"Edward?" he called. "Edward, it's me, Emmett. You're having a bad dream. Everything is alright."
Tears continued to stream down his face.
Emmett reached out to touch his and the second his fingers touched Edward's arm, his younger brother flinched and roared, whirling around and throwing his arms out, defending himself.
"Woah!" Emmett jumped back. "It's alright!"
Edward then began to claw at his chest again, his fingernails leaving a trail of blood before he grabbed his copper hair in his hands and pulled.
"Edward, man, stop!" Emmett shouted but his words fell on deaf ears.
Edward continued to claw and hurt himself, so much so that Emmett began to worry that he would need extra blood to heal the wounds he was creating.
Realising he needed to take drastic measures, Emmett ran full speed at Edward, slamming him into the wall as he grabbed his shoulders and roared at him, fangs dropping down.
His roar was so loud that Edward's eyes popped open and he released his hair. His green eyes searched around the room, frantic and scared.
"Bella - where's Bella?"
"She's fine-" Emmett try to reassure him but Edward pushed past him, slipping under his arms and out of the door, knocking Diego flying.
"Edward!" Emmett shouted, hot on his heels.
Edward raced into the living room, Bella and Rose both gasping when they saw him. To Emmett's relief, Liam took a defensive position in front of them.
"Edward?" Bella asked as her eyes ran over his red chest and the bloody tear tracks staining his face.
Emmett came to his side and placed a hand on his shoulder; first to act as a support but second so he could pull him back if he needed. He didn't know what was going on.
"Bella-" the word came out like a sob. "I killed you - you died."
Bella shook her head and moved towards him, Liam moving with her like a shadow.
"You didn't, I'm fine," she tried to reassure him but Emmett picked up on the tremor in her voice.
"I killed you," he sobbed, his knees giving way as he fell to the floor, his entire body beginning to shake.
Emmett went down to grab him but Bella got to him quicker, holding her hand up to tell Emmett to stay where he was. She got to her knees and placed her hands on his face.
"I'm fine - we're fine," she soothed. She brought his head closer and placed in on her shoulder, encasing Edward in her arms as he openly sobbed, repeating over and over again that he had killed her.
As she comforted him, Rose and he shared a glance; what the hell was going on?
Thank you for reading.
