Chapter 2: The letter

Skylar Falis nervously glanced around her small kitchen. It was her 11th birthday so she should be happy, but she couldn't be more nervous. She fidgeted with a loose hair as she waited. In the corner of the kitchen her mother, Mrs. Falis, was sitting in a large chair watching their Muggle TV. Mrs. Falis looked up and saw her daughter's nervousness. She sighed and smiled at her daughter.

"Honey, worrying won't do anything to make it come faster." Mrs. Falis smiled softly at her daughter. "And we know it will come. You are not a Squib. Remember what happened at Grandpa Hunk's house?'

Skylar smiled at the memory. She had just been maybe 7 or 8, but she was chasing one of her Grandpa's Puffskeins when it disappeared and reappeared on top of his house. She tried to climb after it and ended up floating up to the roof! She had forgotten all about the Puffskein and started to float all around! It felt different than when she flew on a broomstick, nothing was holding her up!

This had happened several times since then and every time was when she felt most at ease or happy. This couldn't be a coincidence.

Skylar then focused on what had been on her mind for the last couple of days. "What if the owl got hurt or it drops it?!"

"The owl is fine. They have done this for hundreds of years, even if there was a problem, the headmaster would take care of it." Mrs. Falis remembered being this nervous when she was Skylar's age. Mrs. Falis looked towards the clock; the owl should come within the next hour.

Skylar was a little reassured by her mother's logic, but she still felt super nervous. She glanced towards the window and waited.

About half an hour later Skylar was still string out the window. That was when she spotted a small speck flying towards her house! As it came closer she could make out wings, a beak, and a chubby body! It must be the owl! She raced over to the window and peered closer, but it was only a small crow. She sighed and defeatedly walked over to her chair to stare out the window again.

Her mother watched her with amusement. Sometimes Skylar could be a little dramatic. But she still knew how Skylar felt.

Another half hour passed and both Mrs. Falis and Skylar were getting a little worried. Mrs. Falis had started secretly watching the window. That is when a small tap was heard at the window on the opposite side of the house. Mrs. Falis smiled as Skylar raced to said window.

Skylar ran over to the window where a small screech owl was waiting with a letter in its beak. It tapped the window again impatiently. Skylar quickly opened the window and the owl flew in, dropped the envelope in Skylar's waiting hands, and flew over to a small perch. Flurry, the Falis family's pet snowy owl flew over from his other perch and went to socialize with the new owl.

Excitedly, Skylar ripped open the Hogwarts seal, ready to see what the envelope contained. Inside there were two small letters, one was very fancy and the other had a small list. She read the fancy one first. It said:

Dear Ms. Falis,

We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment.

Term begins on September 1st. We await your owl no later than July 31st.

Yours Sincerely,

Kiran Hearth

Headmistress

Skylar squealed as she read it.

"I'm in! I'm in! I'm in!" She bounced around with her letter in hand.
