Chapter-2

System Integration

The night he was beaten up by his uncle Vernon, was one of the most important nights of Harry Potter's life. He was sure that he had gotten hit in the head at least once, which was probably why he lost his consciousness. But, he did not know at the time that the next time he woke up, his life would be changed forever. The first thing he saw when he woke up was the ceiling of his cupboard. It looked no different, with the spider and its web exactly where it was yesterday. Slowly he began to remember the details of what happened the previous night. His only friend in class, Jim, had been bullied by his cousin Dudley and his little gang. Jim was one of the bravest students in Harry's class and he had known that being friends with Harry would probably get him into trouble. Yet, he had still taken the initiative to talk with Harry even though he was the loner kid in class. Jim had decided to take a risk out of kindness, and he had payed the price for it. He was jumped by Dudley and his gang, and was threatened into spilling everything Harry had told him in confidence. Even though he tried to resist at first, after taking multiple punches to the stomach from Dudley, the pain had proven too much for the small boy to handle, and he complied with their demands.

One time, Harry had tried to tell a teacher about the abuse that he received at home. The teacher had asked him for proof. He was not even sure what the word meant, at the time. Then the teacher had called him a liar and had scolded him for trying to make his family look bad. After all, every one knew that the Dursleys were a very respectable family. She had then asked him to stop being such an attention seeking brat. That day, Harry promised himself that he would never talk about the conditions at home to anybody else. He had lost all hope and trust in authority figures. But, Jim had been so nice to him and Harry strongly felt that he could trust him. That trust had been what led to Harry getting seriously injured at the hands of his uncle. He knew that Jim could not be blamed for giving him up. He knew what it was like to be bullied by Dudley and his friends. However, he could not help but blame himself for not learning his lesson after the incident with his teacher and trusting another person with his secrets. He learned two very important lessons that day. To never trust or depend on another person to help him, and to always keep promises that he make to himself. Both lessons would later come to define The Boy-Who-Lived.

When Vernon learned about the things that Harry had told Jim, he had flown into a rage. His face turned a deep purple and he began to furiously strike at Harry. Harry had been hit on his head, face, chest, stomach, and... he was hit all over his body. He vaguely remembered that his nose was bleeding and that his chest hurt, before he fell unconscious. However, now he could not feel even the slightest pain anywhere in his body. In fact, he had never felt more healthy. Harry slowly stood up. Suddenly, he felt a sharp pain in his head and cried out, "Ow!". He lost his balance and fell back into his bed. Then he heard a "Ping" sound come from above his head. He opened his eyes only to see an unbelievable sight. A large green dialog box was floating above his head, right in front of his face. Another cry of shock forced its way out of his mouth. He quickly closed his eyes and remained that way for some time. He slowly built up his courage and opened his eyes again, only to see the same floating box. He knew that he was hallucinating, but he did not know how to stop it. The hit to the head must've been stronger than I had initially thought. He raised his eyes and pushed at the box to see if it would go away, only to be shocked again when he saw his hand pass through the box as if it was not there. After he forced himself to calm down, Harry read what was written on the box. It said,

"Welcome User, to [The Game System].

Click on the this box three times to continue.

Completed: (1/3)"

The Game System? Huh. Well, if it isn't going to go away, I'd better see what it does, Harry thought. He touched the floating box once and saw that the completion progress showed (2/3) now. Encouraged by this, Harry clicked on the screen once more and saw the box fade away from view, only to be replaced by another one which contained a different message. It said,

"System Integration Complete"

The box disappeared after he had read it and he heard another "Ping" which he now knew signified the appearance of a notification. The new box read,

"You have now been awarded the Class [The Gamer].

Use the command 'Status' to view User Status."

Harry was utterly confused by the events that were taking place. He had never played a game in his life. However, he had seen Dudley playing many of the Role Playing Video Games he had been gifted over the years. Therefore, he had a basic idea on how stuff worked in a game. Understanding what the "System" wanted him to do, Harry said out loud, "Status". As soon as he finished saying the word, a large floating box similar to the ones that came before, appeared in front of him.

" Status

There was also a small question mark at the bottom of the box which Harry immediately clicked on. A new box appeared explaining the contents of the previous page.

He was overwhelmed by all the knowledge that he was presented with. But he suddenly felt a sense of calm come over his mind. He began to think rationally. My life appears to have turned into a game. Hmm. The only logical thing to do would be to follow the instructions given by the "The Game System", whatever it is.

He suddenly realized something. No one had come to wake him up. There was no Aunt Petunia outside his cupboard bashing on the door screaming at him to get up and start doing his chores. That's odd. Petunia hated letting him sleep in, even on weekends. She really is a monster.

He slowly came to the realization that no one had come to wake him up because they didn't know what condition he was in after Vernon's loss of control yesterday. He had suffered a number of injuries last night, many of which had the potential to cause severe physical problems and yet, he had not been taken to a hospital or even administered basic first aid. He had just been left lying in his bed, leaving the matter of his life to fate. If it was not for whatever had healed him, he could have very possibly died here and he was sure his supposed "family" wouldn't have batted an eyelash even if he had. He was suddenly overcome by anger and he felt like ripping them all to shreds with his bare hands. But, the intense bout of emotion went away as quickly as it had arrived and a sense of calm replaced it. What's up with that anyway?

Knowing that it could be one of the skills the system had given him, he quickly gave the command and the Skills page opened up before him.

" Skills

Active Skills

[None]

Passive Skills

1. Linguistic Skills

English [Lvl 5 : User can read and write English satisfactorily for his age]

Parseltongue [Lvl Max : User can talk to snakes]

2. Gamer Skills

Gamer's Mind [Lvl Max : Allows the user to calmly and logically think things through. User is immune to all psychological status effects]

Gamer's Body [Lvl Max : Allows the user's body to behave like that of a game character's. Sleeping in a bed restores HP, MP and all other normal status effects]"

The skill [Gamer's Mind] seems to be the reason for the abnormal speed with which my mind always returns to calmness whenever I feel a strong emotion. It could be very useful in dangerous situations. However, If it cancels all intense emotions, even the good feelings might be restricted. Hmm. Eh, It's just something I'll have to deal with.

Harry had never experienced many good emotions in life. So, to him, this sacrifice did not seem like much of a sacrifice at all.

"Ping", It was a new notification.

"Logically thinking things through caused your WIS to go up by 1"

He suddenly thought to himself, Maybe this ability is a reward from God for everything I have experienced in life. For the suffering I have faced and lived through. He thought of the sheer helplessness that he felt when he saw Vernon charging at him. He did nothing to defend himself and just stood there, frozen. He thought of the humiliation that he experienced when Dudley and his gang kept on kicking him even as he lay down on the ground, in defeat. The anger that coursed through him quickly turned into a monstrous rage and thirst for blood. But the feeling went away as quickly as it arrived because of [Gamer's Mind]. But the intent remained. He did not want to experience defeat ever again. With or without the help of this Gamer ability, he would ensure that he was never humiliated again He would do anything that had to be done if it meant that he'd never have to lower his head before anybody, ever again. What did he have to lose? A faint smile crept onto his face. Whatever it takes.
