Caroline POV
A week later, Caroline found herself getting ready for bed at 7:00. Their cruise was docked in Houston, Texas, so they had to get up at 3:00 am to drive to the airport and catch their flight at 6:30. Caroline was so excited, she didn't even mind waking up early.
"Caroline, do you have any good books? I packed all of mine, and all Eddie has are some boring sports ones." Beth made a face as she walked into Caroline's room.
"Hey!" Eddie exclaimed, walking into the room. "Those books are the only ones I can read without barfing."
"Honey, it's ok. We all know you're a little 'literary challenged'." Caroline teased Eddie, whose real name was Edith Ann, although if anyone called her that, they would probably get punched. Eddie just made a face a Caroline, who was brushing her black hair, while Beth searched her shelf, laughing.
"I can't believe we leave tomorrow!" Caroline said to her sisters. It had been one of the slowest weeks of Caroline's life. She could hardly concentrate on her school work. Her thoughts just kept drifting to the middle of the Caribbean. She was positive that this cruise would be the highlight of her life. She could see it all. 10 years from now, everyone would be talking about her.
Did you hear that the famous and wonderful Caroline Malloy was discovered on a cruise in the Caribbean? She might've been only 12, but her talent was so-
"CAROLINE!" her sisters interrupted her daydream. They were looking at her expectantly as if they had asked her a question.
"I'll be a household name." she said dreamily. Eddie just rolled her eyes, while Beth repeated her question.
"Caroline, we were wondering what seat on the airplane you wanted." It was the family's first time on an airplane, and Beth was absolutely terrified, while Eddie was fascinated with the thought of flying through the sky. Caroline herself was pretty nervous, but she knew that if her airplane crashed then she would be in the news, and thinking about being in the news made all of her jitters go away. Well, most of her jitters.
"Could I have the aisle seat?" Caroline asked. "I want to be the first get to the exit in case we all have to jump out."
"Yeah, that's perfect." Beth said, ignoring the last part of what she said. "I wanted to sit in the middle of you guys."
"And I wanted the window seat." Eddie put in. Their parents decided that the girls could handle an airplane flight by themselves. So while the girls were in standard coach seating, the adults would be flying first class. It made Caroline mad that she wouldn't be getting the respect she deserved, but she was happy to be flying with her sisters.
"Girls," their mother said, coming into Caroline's room. "It's time for bed now."
"Aw, but it's only 7:10!" Eddie protested.
"Trust me," Mrs. Malloy started. "You'll wish that you had gone to bed even earlier once you wake up in the morning."
"5 more minutes?" Beth asked. "We're just really excited."
"Okay, but no later. Your father and I are heading to bed" And with that, their mother kissed them each on the forehead and left the room.
Once she left, Eddie turned to Caroline. "Did you pack the stuff?" she wanted to know.
"Yeah, but we don't even know if they're going to be there."
"Well, it's good to be prepared." Eddie said, and Beth nodded. "Besides, it couldn't hurt. If they are there, we'll be glad we have the stuff. If they're not there, we'll just be glad in general! It's a win-win situation!"
Beth and Caroline laughed, and after a couple more minutes of excited chatter and gossip, Beth and Eddie said goodnight to Caroline and retreated to their own rooms.
As Caroline was drifting off to sleep, she couldn't decide if she wanted the Hatfords to be on the cruise or not. As much as the boys had bothered her and her sisters 3 years ago, she did miss them. And who knows. Maybe they've matured!
Ha. Caroline thought. I can't even imagine a mature Hatford. And with that thought in mind, she fell asleep, not quite ready to be woken up so early in the morning.
Wally POV
"Wake up sleeping beauty!" Jake Hatford yelled, laughing at a sleeping Wally.
"I'm awake! Now shut up." Wally said grumpily, hitting Jake with a pillow. They were in their car and had just arrived at the airport. It was currently 2 in the morning.
It was the Saturday morning that Wally had been dreading. They were soon going to be getting on an airplane headed for Houston, Texas, where their cruise was docked. Wally surprisingly wasn't too worried about the airplane flight. He figured that he would enjoy looking at all the clouds, studying the shapes of them, and thinking about how airplanes worked. No, it wasn't the flight he was scared for. It was the cruise. But he didn't want to think about that.
Instead, Wally focused on carrying all his luggage into the airport. After an hour or so, they boarded their plane. Unfortunately, their small airport didn't have any direct flights to Texas, so they had to get off their plane and get onto another one in Ohio.
"Hey!" Peter exclaimed while they were waiting to board their second flight. "We're in Ohio! Maybe we'll see the Malloys!"
"Ugh, ew." said Josh. "I hope not."
"Probably not." Wally said. "Why would they be at the airport at 5:30 in the morning?"
"I don't know," sighed Peter. "I wish though."
Wally noticed that Jake, for once, was silent. At first, Wally thought that he was just too disgusted at the thought of the Malloys to say anything. But then Wally remembered how in the spring, they had received a letter from them, along with a newspaper clipping of Eddie Malloy, talking about how she was the first-ever girl to make it onto some baseball team back in Ohio. Jake had merely scoffed and said something about Eddie's ego being big enough already, but Wally noticed that he had kept the clipping. Was it possible... did Jake miss her?
No, Wally decided, I'll bet he just doesn't want to think about the Malloys, especially during vacation.
30 minutes later, they boarded their 2nd flight, and Wally tried to mentally prepare himself for the cruise, but ended up just going to sleep.
Peter POV
Being in Ohio made Peter miss the Malloys more than ever, so when he saw two blonds and a dark-haired girl, he was sure that he was just hallucinating. But later, he got a better look at them and saw that one of the blonds was wearing a baseball cap, and one was holding a book. Could it be..?
Nah. Peter thought. I'm just hungry. And with that, Peter took out some snacks and got comfortable, ready for a long flight.
