The Mall

MIKE POV

I smiled lightly as I walked with Emily and the boys. There was quite a crowd, but we managed it as we made our way through our local mall. After a while of the boys chasing each other around Emily and I, we made sure to keep them close by in the crowd. I was carrying Shaun on my shoulders while Emily had Jason's hand. Suddenly, Emily stopped as we reached a shoe store.

"I wanna look at some new shoes for Shaun. Could you watch Jason for a minute?" she said suddenly.

I nodded, setting Shaun down. "Sure thing, no trouble."

Jason walked over next to me while Emily took Shaun's hand and they made their way into the store.

"We're not going anywhere. Are we, Jason?" I remarked gently.

Jason did not reply, but we remained waiting for a while. It was just after that moment of waiting for a while that I turned and noticed that Jason was no longer at my side.

I sighed and began hurrying after him, just able to make him out in the crowd. But I wasn't able to catch up to him, nor did he respond to me calling after him, until he finally stopped.

I hurried up to him, briefly noting where he had stopped; in front of a tall man, selling balloons, dressed as a clown. Shaking my head, I knelt down next to Jason.

"Jason, you really shouldn't wander off like that." I admonished. "There's a lot of people here."

But Jason wasn't paying attention. "Can I have a balloon, Dad? Please, can I...?"

I smiled indulgently. "Alright, let's go buy a balloon."

Jason grinned and we approached the clown.

The clown nodded and smiled. "Hey, champ. What's your name?" he greeted, enthusiastic.

"Jason."

Nodding again, still smiling, the clown replied, "Which balloon would you like, Jason?"

Jason thought for a moment before pointing. "Uh, the red one."

The clown worked through the balloons until he found a red one and detached it, handing it to Jason. The clown then turned to me while Jason began to walk off.

I called after him quickly. "Jason, wait here. There's a lot of people around. Wait for your dad, son!"

"Two dollars please, sir." the clown spoke up, getting my attention.

I quickly rifled through my pockets, pulled out a bill, and, verifying it wasn't a one, handed it to the clown. "Keep the change."

I hurried and looked around, but Jason was gone.

'Shit. Oh shit, where could he…?'

Then I froze, hearing Emily's voice. "Urgh, it is impossible to try on a pair of shoes with this crowd."

I turned. She was there with Shaun. Her expression changed as she looked around.

"Where's Jason?"

"I bought him a balloon and paid for it. When I turned around, he was gone." I explained worriedly.

Emily immediately began to panic. "Gone? Wait, what do you mean, gone?!"

I tried to calm her and take control of the situation. "Wait here with Shaun, I'll go and find him."

With that, I turned and began to hurry through the crowd, looking desperately for my oldest son.

I silently cursed myself as I looked through the most likely stores that a ten-year-old boy would wander into; a video game store, a comic store, but there was no sign of Jason.

'I shouldn't have taken my eyes off him. Why did I ever...' I thought desperately. Then a moment of hope hit me. 'The red balloon that I bought him. I can use it to find him.'

Hurrying towards the balcony edge and looking down at the crowd on the lower floor, my heart leapt as I spotted Jason down below. I hurried around towards the escalators and began hurrying down.

"Excuse me, sorry." I muttered as I gently pushed past other people.

On the ground floor, I was once again stuck. The crowd was even worse down here. But I still had my small glimmer of hope.

'Red balloon, find the red balloon, there can't be that many, surely...'

I looked around and spotted a red balloon to my right. I began moving through the crowd, heading towards the balloon, but I soon realized the terrifying truth. It wasn't as easy as I'd thought. Reaching that red balloon, I found that it was part of a massive collection of balloons that were released at that moment. Jason wasn't there. I looked around wildly and spotted another red balloon, on its own.

My heart leapt again. 'That's it, that's gotta be Jason.'

Once more pushing my way through the crowd, I approached the balloon and sure enough, this one was held by a child.

"Jason, thank god, you really scared me..." I began.

But it wasn't Jason, it was just another boy who looked like him. I turned away again, panic building.

Looking around, I spotted another red balloon heading for the exit of the mall. I pushed my way desperately through the crowd towards the exit until I finally reached the sidewalk outside.

"Where is he? Where could he have gone?" I muttered worriedly. "Wait..."

Looking across the street, towards another store, I spotted Jason in front of it.

"Jason!"

He turned and grinned when he saw me. "Dad!"

He then turned and began to run towards me. It was then, unfortunately, that the series of catastrophic events happened. For as Jason was running towards me, the road was empty, but as I looked to the left, a car suddenly appeared, driving towards Jason. The driver hadn't even seen him.

"Jason, no!" I cried out.

I dashed forwards and grabbed Jason, pulling him close to me, trying to shield him. I heard the squeal of brakes, the car stopping, but it was too late. The car struck us and I blacked out.
